MHA

ANNUAL MEMBERS MEETING

Sponsored Events

All members are invited to attend and socialize. Members voice their opinions as last year is summed up and a plan is made for the year to come. Elections are held for officers and directors, and the Hereford Hall of Fame induction is made.

BOARD MEETINGS Elected board members and officers meet throughout the year to discuss and plan events that will promote and educate about Maryland Hereford cattle. Members are always welcome to attend.

NEWSLETTERS Newsletters are mailed after each board meeting. They include news, events, and the minutes from the recent Board Meeting to keep members up to date.

BREED SHOWS The Maryland Hereford Breeders Show is held in conjunction with the Maryland State Fair Open Hereford Show.

JUNIOR PROGRAM The MJHA program is open to any person up to the age of 22, who owns, manages, or is associated with Hereford cattle. MJHA meets throughout the year to work together and learn from each other and their advisors about Hereford cattle, showing and promoting Maryland Herefords. The Maryland Junior program sponsors the Junior Preview Show traditionally held the second weekend of May each year. Maryland Juniors can also travel to and compete in the Junior National Hereford Expo. This is held in July and is co-sponsored by the American Hereford Association and affiliated junior and state Hereford Associations. MHA shows its support to the juniors by participating in their fundraisers.

TROPHY PROGRAM The MHA sponsors a trophy program. Trophies are supplied to the county and state 4-H shows for the champion Herefords. Monetary donations are made to several youth and jackpot shows within the region each year. 6

MARYLAND HEREFORD BREEDERS CUP The Maryland Hereford Breeders Cup is a new program beginning with the 2018 show season to recognize our Maryland Hereford Breeders. To be eligible for this program, the animals must be Maryland bred, born, and solely owned and exhibited by residents of Maryland. Breeder-owned animals are eligible (you do not need to sell the animal for it to be eligible for this program). The champions are chosen at designated shows and award prizes based on a two-thirds/one-third split of the nomination money. Animals are nominated for the program by the owners or breeders. The Breeders Cup steer champions are awarded at the Preview Show and the Breeders Cup heifer champions are awarded at the Maryland State Fair Open Hereford Show.

CELEBRATE MARYLAND SALE The Celebrate Maryland Hereford Sale is a member hosted consignment sale that is traditionally held on the second Saturday of October. This annual sale features purebred and registered show prospect heifers, bred heifers, cow/calf pairs, breeding bulls, and show steers. All breeding animals in the sale are nominated in June, looked over and hand-picked in July. Any member can nominate to consign to the sale. Steers consigned to the sale are halter broke, ring ready, and intended for Junior and 4-H projects. Heifers bought at this sale are eligible to participate in the Maryland Hereford Futurity Incentive Program.

FUTURITY INCENTIVE PROGRAM Heifer calves that are bought through the Celebrate Maryland Sale are eligible for the Celebrate Maryland Sale Futurity Program. The champions are chosen during a specific class held at the Maryland Hereford Breeders Show. This class is open to all heifers that were purchased through the Celebrate Maryland Sale. This class can be entered by buyers that are members or non-members of MHA regardless of age. The champions win a cash purse that is composed of incentive sponsor monies. The breeders that consigned the winning animals at the Celebrate Maryland Sale also receive a prize.

PRESIDENT’S

Letter

Fellow Hereford Enthusiasts,

I would like to thank you for your interest in our directory. If you are a long time follower of our association or seeing this for the first time, you will find this directory an important source for not only quality Herefords, but knowledge from a diverse group of breeders from the production side to the show ring. This is an exciting time to be president of this association with all that we have to offer. The Maryland Hereford Association is involved in projects from supporting our youth in county and state and regional shows and supporting our Maryland Cattleman’s Association. We are big supporters of our Junior Association in fundraising to junior national every year, having a junior auction at our annual meeting, and supporting the food booth at our annual sale. Our Juniors have shown to be a force and an excellent representation of our state when they are at the various shows as well as Junior Nationals. Our Celebrate Maryland Sale is by far our biggest event as an association which now draws interest of consignors and buyers from Kentucky to Maine. The sale has been consistently the top average sale over the last 5 years and our Sale Heifer Futurity has been important to keep the interest coming. The show is held at the Maryland State Fair each year. Our Poll-ette’s are one of the strongest in the country helping with scholarships, and our Queen and Princess programs. They are an important group of women that help to keep us moving forward. This year will be the inaugural year for our Marland Breeder’s Cup to help further recognize the accomplishments of our Maryland breeders. This will be for Maryland owned and bred heifers and steers, and will be help at the Maryland Junior Preview Show, and the Maryland State Fair as well. Our association is always looking for new folks and new interest. Feel free to come speak with me or any of the breeders in this directory for membership, or just to say hi. Thanks again for your interest and picking up our directory. Sincerely,

Rob Mehlman

MHA President

Poll-ettes

The Maryland Poll-ettes main purpose is and always will be our youth programs; we give one or two Scholarships each year and run a royalty program. In order to fund these programs we run one to two fundraisers a year. We hold one meeting a year, usually in the early spring and have a Christmas Party for members and spouses. Our annual dues are $15.00 and we welcome any women who have an interest in Hereford cattle and share our goal to support the youth program. We are affiliated and are members of the National Hereford Women; their mission is like ours in that they support the Hereford Youth with programs and activities.

Royalty

The Maryland Hereford Queen and Princess program was established in 1977 with the crowning of Barbara Windsor. The Queen and Princesses take on the responsibility of being ambassadors for Hereford cattle and the state of Maryland. They attend different events to lend a helping hand; in addition, to being Maryland’s representation. Royalty is a Junior member that is chosen by the Poll-ettes. Crowning is during the Junior’s annual meeting at the Preview Show held in the spring. Today our Poll-ette membership includes three former state queens: June Schmidt Kron, Bobbye Schmidt and Heather Graf Schaefer. Interested Juniors should contact the Poll-ettes for an application.
