AASL: Skills Standard 2.1.2 Organize knowledge so that it is useful Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will to be able to identify traits of a folk tale, and to compare and contrast two or more versions of the folk tale ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ using a Venn diagram. Lesson: Engagement: SLMS On Promethean board, bring up images of folk tales (Peter Pan, Lion & Mouse, Little Red Riding Hood, etc) Ask Students to name them and if they know what genre they are (folk tales) Activity: SLMS Explain that we are going to learn about folk tales today and to compare and contrast two versions of Jack and the Beanstalk, but first:  

Ask students if they know what a folk tale is (call on several students) Pass out the folk tale book marks and go over the list of characteristics

Activity: SLMS/Teacher Transition to the reading of the two stories (point out the titles, author, and illustrator; discuss differences in the titles, gender of main character, and artwork)  

Mrs. Kim reads Jack and the Beanstalk by Steven Kellogg Ms. McDonald reads Kate and the Beanstalk by Mary Pope Osborne

. Activity: Teacher Ask students if they remember what a Venn diagram is and how to draw one. Ask students to pick one color to represent Jack, a second to represent Kate, and a third for the things that are common between the two stories. Call on students to name similarities and differences (note how many of each) Assessment: SLMS/Teacher Exit card  Ask students to a trait of a folk tales  Ask students to name one difference and one similarity
