10 Steps to Executive-Level Confidence Making the move from middle management to the executive suite requires a healthy dose of confidence. Executives have to make critical, wide-reaching decisions, often with limited information and time — then persuade others to execute those decisions. Self-assurance is a must. Yet gaining confidence can be a struggle. The “Impostor Syndrome” is real: researchers at Georgia State University found that 33% of the high-achieving adults they interviewed did not feel they deserved their success. The Imposter Syndrome meant that sufferers opted out of important career opportunities, to their financial and personal detriment. Women in particular struggle with confidence. They often are less adept at moving forward after setbacks, reading temporary failures as permanent deficiencies, and they often have smaller professional safety nets than men. The good news is that confidence can be learned, like any career skill. Here are 10 steps that can have you operating from a place of power:
1 WHEN IN DOUBT, ACT It’s the difference between running and stagnant water. When you’re stagnant, doubt and insecurities breed like mosquitoes. Dale Carnegie wrote that “inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage.” Fear of failure can paralyze us, as we almost always overestimate the consequences. Build your confidence instead by taking action, often.
2 GO OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE EACH DAY If we don’t stretch our comfort zones, they shrink. Constantly challenge and improve yourself, and you’ll become comfortable doing new things — and you will establish your identity (both to yourself and others) as someone who takes risks. Each new thing you try adds to your knowledge and skill base, and provides you with a foundation of competence. This is the bedrock of any successful career.
3 PUT THE FOCUS ON OTHERS Choose to be conscious of others instead of self-conscious. Ask people questions. Turn conversations into a game where you try to find a connection with the other person. Give compliments generously, and offer to help others when you can. Looking for the best in others will help you see it in yourself.
4 CULTIVATE MENTORS Their advice and connections are invaluable, plus you will make better decisions about opportunities thanks to their objective assessments of the pros and cons. And you will be much more willing to take risks knowing you have supporters who will help you get back up on your feet if you fail.
5 KEEP SELF-TALK P OSITIVE It’s hard to feel confident if someone puts you down all the time. It’s impossible if that naysayer is you. Watch how you talk to yourself. Is it how you would talk to a friend? If not, then make a change.
6 ELIMINATE NEGATIVE PEOPLE FROM YOUR NETWORK You absolutely need to invite and be receptive to constructive criticism if you want to grow as a professional and as an individual. But recognize that some people will never be happy with you or with life, and it is a waste of time to try to convince them of your worth. What’s more, their sour outlook on life is contagious. Learn to identify these people quickly, and move on.
7 TAKE CARE OF YOUR HEALTH Make time for exercise, and get enough rest. Your body must be physically ready to take on challenges.
8 DO YOUR HOMEWORK Keep up-to-date on the news in your industry, and know your company and department inside and out. If you have a challenging task ahead, prepare and practice in your mind. Nothing builds confidence like knowledge and preparation.
9 WATCH YOUR BODY LANGUAGE Your posture and overall appearance affect both your mental state and how others perceive you, and thus respond to you. If you want to be a leader, you have to dress and act the part. Stand and sit up straight, make eye contact, and remember to smile. Wear the professional clothing of your industry. Eliminate the telltale signs of nervousness: excessive twitching, closed-off posturing (crossed arms and legs, hunched shoulders), and shallow breathing.
10 PRACTICE GRATITUDE DAILY In a recent study of how successful people spend the first hour of each day, the No. 1 response was investing time in thinking about the things for which they are most grateful. Starting your day by saying “thank you” for the good in your life makes it more likely that you will approach the day’s challenges with the proper perspective. Everyone has a story I don’t mean a story about them, but a story that shapes them. A story that sits in a canvas sling chair, offstage, invisible, affecting all their choices and actions each day like the director of a movie. Who sits in your canvas sling chair? What story do you echo without knowing it? I talk a lot about my own stories. Don Quixote, the Wise Men who followed a star, A Message to Garcia, old Men and the Sea, Henry V at Agincourt. What few people realize is that each of these stories revolve around a single theme: unconditional commitment to an objective no one else can see. Dulcinea was important to no one but Quixote. The star of Bethlehem was meaningless to everyone except the wise men. Garcia set out to find a General whose location no one knew. The old man kept fishing although he had caught nothing for 84 days. Henry V believed in his ragtag band of men when everyone else thought they were bums. Examine your own favorite characters. See what they have in common. Prepare to be impressed with what you learn about yourself. And if you are wise, you will allow that character to bring all the facets of your company into alignment. The Path That Brought You Here When you list “features and benefits” in your ads, you are speaking to the customer who is currently, consciously in the market for your product. What percentage of the public do you suppose that might be? One percent? I doubt it. In most categories, it is only a tiny fraction of one percent. But what about the remaining 99.9 percent? When they aren’t in the market for your product, they have no interest in your features and benefits. Do you remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare? This is my letter to the rabbit: Dear Rabbit, quit waiting until the last minute to advertise, hoping to impress the unwitting customer who has not already chosen a preferred provider. Be like the Tortoise. Impress future
customers with stories that tug at their attention and make them smile...and you will become their preferred provider. It takes courage and patience, but it’s how you win the race. Looking back at your career, can you describe the moment when your foot first fell onto the path that brought you to where you are today? “I was a 10-year-old boy holding a flashlight for my Dad…” “I won the race by only 20 seconds, so he beat the shit out of me…” “I was in the drive-through line at McDonald’s…” “I was looking at my brand-new baby boy and thinking about the kinds of things that happen to people when they’re least expecting it…” These are the opening lines of the origin stories of Ken Goodrich of Goettl Air Conditioning, Mark Jennison of IAMACOMEBACK.com, Brian Scudamore of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, and Tim Schmidt of the United States Concealed Carry Association. People listen to the TED Talk of Simon Sinek and realize the importance of “Start with Why,” but they never really know how to do it. Most of them describe the outcome they are hoping to create, or they just approach their Unique Selling Proposition from a new and different angle.
IF YOU WANT TO “ START WITH WHY,” WRITE YOUR ORIGIN STORY. If your origin story could be told by anyone else in your category, you have not created an origin story; you are telling us about your passion. Or you are telling us what you hope to accomplish. Have you ever read the bio of an artist? “I have loved painting since I was 4 years old.” “I knew I wanted to be a painter when I was 3.” “My mother tells me that I was painting before I could talk.” These are not the opening lines of origin stories. These are just people describing the longevity of their passion. If a jeweler says his “Why” is that he wants to “help people celebrate the important moments in their lives,” this is not an Origin Story. He is just telling us what he hopes to accomplish. To prove my point, these are the excellent opening lines of eight different origin stories from eight different jewelers: “Tom Heflin was a railroad conductor. His wife had a sister…” “Standing at the engagement ring counter, I felt like Oliver Twist asking for another bowl of porridge…” “Five years before Teddy Roosevelt led the Rough Riders, Simon Schiffman stepped off the train to stretch his legs…” “My Dad was a house painter. He taught me to sand and scrape paint until my fingers were raw…” “During Hurricane Betsy in ‘65, my Dad moved us into his jewelry design studio…” “When I opened the store I had no money. We didn’t have the money for inventory, so I…” “Morris Jacobs immigrated to America as a boy. He came through Galveston…” “My Dad died in a car crash when I was 3 years old. So my Uncle Joe taught me…” As those eight jewelers just demonstrated, origin stories are not interchangeable. There is no template, no pattern to follow. There is only a snapshot of a fleeting moment, a remembered glimpse of an unfocused future, a haunting voice that has whispered all your life, “Keep trying.” When was the moment that your foot first fell onto the path that brought you to where you are? Now write your Origin Story. Roy H. Williams

COACHING “You cannot instruct a person to have enthusiasm any more than you can instruct them to give birth to a redheaded child. The person must first be inspired. Inspiration is what you give them. Enthusiasm is what they give you. People inhale inspiration and exhale enthusiasm. They cannot give you enthusiasm until you give them inspiration. Neither is a product of instruction. There is a time to instruct and a time to inspire. We often think we’re doing one when we’re actually doing the other. Is your enthusiasm contagious or is it contained? Are you inspiring those around you?”

WEEK TWO + Hasn’t ordered in 3 month Custom report with Last Order Date >= Beginning of Month and Last Order Date <= End of Month (Ex: If it’s April you should have Last Order Date >= Jan 1 and Last Order Date <= Jan 31) + Enrolled this month + Young Living sign up Anniversary (Oily Tools) + Missing Promos for the next 10 days
WEEK THREE + Money Misser + Close to Rank (Oily Trends or Oily Tools / VO using these parameters: Sr Star: Custom report with OGV>1500 and OGV<2000 ) + STS not processed (VO: accounts with Autoship / set PV parameters =0 ) + Missing Promos
WEEK FOUR + Money Misser + Close to Rank (see last week!) + Failed STS (Unprocessed STS Orders) + Missing Promos
Reports LAST ORDER DATE Run Daily + start in downline viewer + just above your name to the right of the screen, click “advanced” to reveal reporting options + Scroll down to “last order date” to reveal a list of the members who have ordered most recently + this will show you who has made a quick order, whose STS orders just went through, etc. + I use this report to have a pulse on WHO is ordering & how frequently & whether they’re on STS or not. I use this report to send out postcards or happy mail as “thank you” notes. FORECAST PV Run Weekly + start in downline viewer + just above your name to the right of the screen, click “advanced” to reveal reporting options + Scroll down to “forecast PV” to reveal a list of each member & their forecasted PV for the month. + You can filter this further to sort by STS date so you can reach out to members with up-coming STS orders & let them know if they are close to a PV promo. STS ERROR (AUTOSHIP) Run every 3-4 days + start in downline viewer + just above your name to the right of the screen, click “advanced” to reveal reporting options + Scroll down to “Missing current month subscription” to reveal a list of each member whose STS has an error for this month. + it’s your job as an upline leader to communicate these errors because they may not realize that it’s happened. YL does not alert members that their order has an error. + A few reasons for error:: card expired, PV dropped below 50 (talk to them about PV assist!), they emptied their STS template, etc. MONEY MISSERS Run once per week + this is a report you will need to customize unless you have Oily Tools + start in downline viewer + just above your name to the right of the screen, click “advanced” to reveal reporting options + click on “customize” + choose “PV” & set it to “is less than” “100” + choose “OGV” & set it to “is greater than or equal to” “100” (this is their total volume) + These are people who have a downline & haven’t spent 100pv to get paid & they have money left on the table. For some of them, they may only need to spend 50pv because their downline is on Fast Start, so that’s something you’ll need to check before telling them that they need to spend another 50pv. For others, it may not be worth it to them to spend more $ to get a few dollars commission - so knowing how to roughly calculate commission is very helpful. DIAMOND TRAINING WITH
