ENTERING THE SITE Pedestrians mainly enter the site from the corner of H.C. Anderson and Stormgade, as they come from the central plaza up the street, other tourist destinations nearby, or the Metro or bus stations. The visitor gets their first impression of the site kids playing, the Culture Center building, and the initial sense of Hygge. ENTERING THE BUILDING Visitors enter the building via a set of stairs or a ramp in the North corner of the site. Upon making the 7’ descent into the building, visitors feel a sense of comfort from the enveloping shape of the building. The descending entry was inspired by the nearby Danish Architecture Center, which also requires the visitor to travel below grade to enter the building. H.C. ANDERSON Hans Christian Anderson, a famous Danish author, is a common symbol in Denmark. His statue stands nearby Dantes Plads, in the central plaza. Famous for his children’s stories, it was only fitting to leave the plaza open to accomodate children at play. Visitors enjoying the open space and nice weather can easily view unique city sights from almost anywhere on the site.

CONTRAST Although Danish design involves orthogonal forms and central courtyards, we created a contrasting design. The courtyard moved to the public realm, and the building became organic to represent the feeling of Hygge. The reddish-brown tone of the building hints at the common colors used in traditional Danish design. The wood facade recalls wood as a traditional Danish material. PARKING Two handicap spots, two police spots, and many bike racks are provided at the North corner of the site. WATER Water is managed on-site using a circulation system integrated into the green roof, thus reducing waste and assisting in managing the large amount of rain the region receives.

DANISH DESIGN PRINCIPLES A common principle in Danish design is the inclusion of public space. The Danes love to bask in the sun, and when the sun is gone they like to spend time outside during holidays or when the weather is nice. We provided as much public space as possible in this design for that reason. Additionally, we avoided creating a design that encroached on the neighboring buildings.

de

THE PLAQUE The other important reason for keeping open space towards the front of the site was an existing plaque near the South corner commenmorating several intellectuals. We ensured the plaque remained visually prominent by providing a public space.

HYGGE & INTEGRATED LORE Expressing the Candle Concept and Danish Hygge through Design Diagrams showing Response to Site and Development of Form

Pockets of Green Denmark is known for both its large parks and small pockets of greenery Christiansborg Palace Axis This is the axis of the main city view from our site

Extensive city bike lanes While the exterior materials, mainly wood and brick, are traditional Danish, the shape is a clear contrast to its surroundings We used one of our other central concepts, Inside-Out Design, to reimagine the traditional Danish courtyard as a more public space The Dante Column A secondary viewpoint from the site

SITE ANALYSIS

Pedestrian Circulation The main axes pedestrians will use to access the site

The Hygge Center acts as a sort of cocoon of activity, inviting people to come in, grab a coffee, and stay for a while

Another critical Danish design principle is access to daylight, especially in office design

The creation of the plaza is in response to an important Danish development plan that prioritizes public space within the city

The administrative space was set above ground to allow access to daylight to all employees By moving the galleries below grade, a large amount of public space was created in the form of a public plaza

The galleries were moved below grade to create a sense of cocooning comfort as the visitors journey through the senses of hygge

09

PROGRAMMATIC RESPONSE

This temple helped to inspire and explair our petal design, which serves both sustainable and visual purposes and helps to make a contemplative and comforting space

BAHÁ’Í TEMPLE Santiago, Chile

The Hygge Center provides the perfect atmosphere to experience Hygge, the feeling of coziness

Administrative and conference spaces

The split-level lobby acts as a bridge between the sunken galleries and the remaining above-ground public and administrative space, thus connecting the program at its busiest intersection

The split-level is common in Danish design, giving the user a choice between the journey up or down; our split-level leads the visitor to either the sunken galleries or the Hygge Center

The sunken galleries take the visitor on a journey through the senes to get the full Hygge experience

INTEGRATION OF DESIGN

The Parklex petals give the building a warm exterior and introduce passive ventilation principles via a double-skin facade

The form of the building resembles a candle flame, a well-known symbol of Hygge

The undulating plaza is felt by the visitors both above ground and below

04 The City Lookout, looking towards Christiansborg Palace

EXPERIENCING THE ELEMENTS Experiencing the elements is an important part of Danish culture. Danes love to sit outside in the sun, but they also don’t mind the rain. There is a saying which the Danes seem to live by that goes, “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” Thus, it was important to have outdoor spaces as well as indoor spaces that are pleasant during the rainier days. A portion of the City Lookout area is covered, allowing visitors to experience the view even on rainy days. The facade petals also help to shield against the elements while framing the view of Christiansborg Palace.

HYGGE & DANISH CULTURE The concept of “hygge is central to Danish culture. Hygge is a Danish word referring to the feeling of comfort and coziness. Hygge is demonstrated in all aspects of Danish life, from the way the Danes eat and relax to the way they work and commute. We sought to embody hygge though our design by using warm materials, such as natural wood, and creating pockets of small and intimate spaces at a human-scale.
