MELISSA SOONG Distinguished President President 2016-2017 | Marina Key Club | Division 04 West | Region 3

Letters of Reccomendation Throughout my four years in Key Club, I have wanted to leave my legacy of service. I believe I have served as an influential President by contacting more volunteer coordinators, completing large service projects, and by playing a key role in communicating with the Huntington Beach Community. I have grown to care for the community who gives me so much and to be extremely thankful for all the mentors who have helped me grow into the leader I am today. Thank you to my Kiwanis Family Officer, Lieutenant Governor, and Kiwanis Advisor, for being with me every step of the way.

It is my genuine honor to nominate Melissa Soong to receive the California-NevadaHawaii District Distinguished President award. Throughout my four years of being a Key Club member, I have watched her grow as both a Key Clubber and a person. I remember well as she greeted me with a bright smile on her face at our first Fall Rally when we were both shy and apprehensive freshmen. At that moment, we formed a bond that has only strengthened through Key Club. Since then, I have observed firsthand as her skills of leadership have blossomed. As the years have passed, I have had the privilege of observing Melissa and her undying desire to serve the community. She has been one the most active members that I have ever seen, breaking 80 hours the earliest out of our entire division. Marina Key Club has seen a renaissance under her leadership as they have been known to have multiple events each weekend, with some of the best member turnout that they have ever seen. As president of Huntington Beach Key Club, I can personally attest to the flourishing of Kiwanis relations under Melissa. Often attending Huntington Beach Kiwanis meetings together, there has never been one where she was not eagerly socializing with and greeting our sponsoring Kiwanians. She has also had the opportunity to spread the Kiwanis message throughout the community. By chartering a K-Kids club at College View Elementary, she has been able to instill in the younger the importance of service and has inspired them to become active members of the community into their teen and adult lives. Having been involved with Huntington Beach Key Club for years, I can state without a doubt that Marina and Huntington Beach Key Club relations have never been so vibrant, hosting a joint service event almost every month. It is her drive to reach out to the community and the rest of our Kiwanis family that makes her one of the most esteemed presidents of Division 4 West. Throughout the term, she has led countless service events with the assistance of her board, who undoubtedly draw their passion from the perfect example Melissa has been setting for them. Most noteworthy of these is the ChemoCare project in which she expanded upon a Marina tradition in leading her club to fundraise over a thousand dollars to put together individual care packages for chemotherapy patients, containing everything from candies to hand-sanitizers. Her compassion for others and activeness continue to make Melissa an essential piece to our Huntington Beach community. Despite being one of the most active members in our division, Melissa continues to awe those around her with her ability to balance it with her plethora of other commitments. In addition to Key Club, she is enrolled in a rigorous academic course schedule, plays varsity golf, and is an active member of the Miss America Organization as Miss Culver City's Outstanding Teen along with much more. Her continued, undying commitment to every single activity she does throughout the community is why I am nominating her for CNH District Distinguished President. Sincerely, Jonathan Wong Huntington Beach Key Club President Huntington Beach High School jwongkeyclub@gmail.com

To Whom It May Concern: When one thinks of hard work, dedication, leadership, and a desire for perfection, there aren’t many names that fit that description as well as Marina Key Club’s President, Melissa Soong. As the outgoing Division 4 West Lieutenant Governor, I have seen her accomplish so much at the head of Marina Key Club, surpassing her predecessors, and setting an example for those to come after her. Melissa has continuously led her home club, Marina Key Club, to success, never missing a single deadline all year, and making sure her fellow officers are always punctual. In addition to her punctuality and responsibility, she constantly searches for new ways to improve her home club, which has been able to accomplish so much this year. Melissa’s commitment to Key Club, her drive to always search for improvement, and her friendly and outgoing character, perfectly defines Key Club’s four core values and makes her an optimal candidate for Key Club’s Distinguished President Award. One of Melissa’s most impressive accomplishments this year was her chartering of K-Kids at College View Elementary School. After multiple meetings with the school’s principal, she was able to start up this community service program for the youth of her Huntington Beach community. She helped them organize student-run elections for their club and create events to give the 4th and 5th grade students opportunities to help their own communities. Working with the kids, she and a fellow 4th grade girl came up with a goal for the club: to fundraise for the Children’s Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that helps children’s hospitals. Through selling Halloween grams, the elementary students were able to raise over $200 for their cause. Melissa’s ability to lead and positively influence others, especially the youth and future of the community, as seen with her chartering of K-Kids at College View Elementary, exemplifies the extraordinary qualities needed to not only meet but overwhelmingly exceed the expectations of a Key Club President. Personally working with Melissa throughout her term as Marina Key Club’s President, I have also seen the rapid emergence of the Chemo Care project which she inherited from her predecessor Catherine Le. Through her term, she was able to donate 40 bags filled with knitted scarves, fuzzy socks, candies, and other neat treats to help cancer patients. Spending countless hours researching for the right materials that would be the most comforting to the patients, Melissa has surely gone above and beyond to contribute to Chemo Care’s cause of comforting and supporting victims of cancer. In addition, while relentlessly working with and developing close relations with the local Huntington Beach Kiwanis, and attending many of their weekly meetings, Melissa was able to fundraise over $1,700 through Kiwanis donations and bake sales. Melissa’s huge impact on those around her community and her commitment to leave a positive impact on everyone she meets continues to impress me even as our terms come to a close. Overall, Melissa’s correspondence to the four core values of Key Club and her unquestioned commitment and dedication to helping her community define her unique persona. With her amazing qualities and accomplishments taken into consideration, she is an extremely viable candidate for recognition as Distinguished Club President. Sincerely, Frank Le Division 4 West LTG

To Whom it may concern: As the Key Club advisor to Marina High School, I have watched Melissa Soong develop her leadership skills over the past two years. From Public Relations Officer to President, she has always effectively communicated with Huntington Beach Kiwanis and has proven to be an outstanding President. As a remarkable girl who has served around 100 hours this term, the most in her club, she continues to leave her legacy of service. Her endless time and dedication to this organization differentiates her from other members. She is constantly spending her time contacting event coordinators, evaluating the board, and delegating tasks. Melissa is always on top of things: monthly submission forms, responding to general member’s questions, and event planning. She is always striving for improvement by setting goals, which is why her club is so successful. Over the term, Marina Key Club has been recognized as Marina Club of the Month and Divisional Club of the Month multiple times. As a responsible and personable young lady, she attends Kiwanis Meetings regularly during her school breaks to connect and catch up with the Huntington Beach Kiwanis members. Every time I see her, she greets me with a huge smile on her face, then proceeds to amaze me with updates about her home club, Marina Key Club. Melissa is one of the most organized presidents, and it has been a pleasure to watch her grow. Every month I receive an early bird submission email for Marina’s monthly submissions, which are filled with information about previous events. She hosts a board meeting every Monday, hosts a general club meeting every Tuesday, and during school breaks, ensures that the board is constantly updated and always planning events. She is one that her officers and clubs members look up to as she leads the club and takes initiative. This ambitious young lady has also taken the initiative and chartered a K-Kids Program at College View Elementary School. Inspiring young students to be active within the community, she attends their meetings during lunchtime and serves a role model for the children. During their school year, they raised over $200 to donate towards Children’s Miracle Network and are currently working on beautifying their campus. She is a natural leader and one who does not hesitate to help. She is always offering to help Kiwanis on the weekends and although she holds an extremely busy schedule, she prioritizes Key Club as she serves the community. During our 4th of July Pancake Breakfast, HB Kiwanis served thousands of families and runners. Due to Melissa’s responsibility and leadership skills, she took charge of all the student volunteers when asked to. She instructed the student volunteers to switch jobs, takes breaks, serve food, cleanup, and most importantly, supervised the students to ensure they were working. She made sure student volunteers were greeting the guests, having fun, and representing Kiwanis in a positive manner. With over 280 student volunteers, it was certainly chaotic, however she made sure the adult volunteers did not have to worry about the community, just had to flip the pancakes. Melissa Soong has proven to be one of the most enthusiastic, passionate, and grateful members of Key Club International. Through her hard work, perseverance, and leadership skills, she is the best candidate for Distinguished President. It is my pleasure to recommend Melissa, Debbie Briscoe Kiwanis Advisor Huntington Beach Kiwanis

President's Checklist I have had the opportunity to build my leadership and public speaking skills as President of Marina Key Club. I make sure to host board meetings every week and twice a month during the summer, host club meetings every week during the school year, and attend majority of Division Council Meetings. In order to educate the members about Key Club, I incorporate a Key Club related fact in the meeting powerpoint so members recognize the four core values, Key Club’s foundation, and other random trivia facts. It is essential to be prepared to lead a club of 120 students, so last year at DCON I attended the President Workshop and I have continued to communicate effectively with my community.

Proof of Attendance Over the past term, I have taken initiative to plan successful events every weekend. By finding new opportunities for my club to volunteer, members have the chance to get involved and develop a passion for service and volunteer work. As club President, I have recognized my responsibilities and have turned in membership on time, served approximately 100 hours through Key Club, and have lead my club to success. The following list of events only counts 40 events, however, throughout the term I have personally planned, hosted, or volunteered at approximately 75 events.

Agendas As President, I stay organized by creating agendas so I am prepared to discuss upcoming activities, events, and fundraisers with the club. This helps me manage my responsibilities and delegate tasks to the other board officers. I create an agenda before every week’s club meeting so my Bulletin Editor can make a powerpoint to cover all of the topics listed.

Club Achievements During my term as President, I have made it my goal to give back to the Huntington Beach Community in as many ways as possible. I have pushed the idea of volunteer service and I have motivated my board members to search for service events which directly benefit our community. Marina Key Club has been recognized for all of our hard work by Marina High School, Division 4 West, and the Orange County Department of Education.

Club of the Month - November Marina Key Club was our school’s second club of the month. The judging committee applauded our fundraising efforts and high amount of service events for the month of October. We raised over $700 for UNICEF by giving members incentives through the trick-or-treat boxes and hosted almost two events every weekend. We were able to create a promotional video to show the school what we are based on--with help from Marina High School TV.

$700 RAISED FOR UNICEF

The Chemo Care Project Cancer strikes when least expected, and more than likely affects someone you know. As my most influential dance teacher passed away due to breast cancer, I was determined to find a way to help the patients. Mrs. Shelly taught me life lessons through simple movement, always brought a radiant energy to the room, and most importantly taught everyone to love themselves. Inspired by her charisma, as Marina Key Club President, I was determined to create a project to help those suffering from Cancer. The Chemocare Project was an idea from last year's term, but as President, I picked it up, renovated the outline, and made it my own. The goal is to provide patients, going through chemotherapy, necessities to make them feel as comfortable as possible. As a club, through countless bake sales, donations, and fundraisers, we raised over $1700 to purchase supplies. Then on Amazon, I found products in bulk; Ranging from Queasy Pops to fuzzy socks, I kept my eyes open, continuously researched, and chose the items that would make the patient's smile. As a club, we assembled over 40 packages to donate towards the Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation. Key Club has influenced me to boldly impact my community. Last November, I was recognized by the Orange County Department of Education for the Chemocare Project, which certainly helped spread the word. As I continue to spread kindness, Key Club continues to be a critical part of my weekly routine. I spend hours upon hours planning and scheduling events, contacting coordinators, and creating opportunities to give back--for all 150+ members. As President, I want to leave the legacy of service. I hope I inspired my members to always give back to the community with good intentions and a good heart because that passion for community service yields opportunities to lead a better life.

Kiwanis Relations As Marina Key Club President, I am a liaison between our high school key club and College View K-Kids, Huntington Beach Kiwanis, Marina KIWIN’s, and other clubs on Marina High School Campus. I send monthly updates to Huntington Beach Kiwanis in order to keep that strong communication. When possible, I also made it my goal to encourage member attendance at Kiwanis meetings and Kiwanis-hosted events so students have the opportunity to meet some of these amazing Kiwanians.

Over the summer, my Kiwanis Family Advisor and I created a plan to charter a K-Kids club at College View Elementary School. Walking into the classroom, the kids were so excited to see us--as their new mentors. They were eagerly waiting to hear about the upcoming projects they would participate in and were eager to create projects of their own. The biggest accomplishment so far--raising over $200 to donate towards Children’s Miracle Network. During the month of October, they created and sent halloween grams to their friends at school in order to fundraise for CMN.

College View K-kids

Huntington Beach Kiwanis I have been able to connect with Huntington Beach Kiwanis over this past term. As I got closer to my fabulous Kiwanis Advisor, Debbie Briscoe, she was able to invite Marina Key Club to participate in numerous Kiwanis events. I have met some amazing Kiwanians through summer Kiwanis Meetings, the annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast, and other exciting events. As my relationship with Huntington Beach Kiwanis grew, I had the opportunity to lead two Kiwanis Takeovers to fundraise for our club! All in all, Huntington Beach Kiwanis does so much for Marina Key Club and I am forever thankful for their generosity and support.

Last term, Marina Key Club and Marina KIWIN’S relations were not too strong. We were seen as opposing clubs. However, this year I was determined to break that opposition and create new bonds. Over the past term I have increased the number of socials and collaborations between our two sister clubs. From supporting their annual Rags to Runway event to celebrating Eliminate Week, we have been able to spread the message of service across campus--together. Kelly, KIWIN’S President, and I have become dependent on each other and love to collaborate on new event ideas. It has been a pleasure to form this close bond with Marina KIWIN’S.

Marina KIWIN'S

Kiwanis Advisor - Debbie Briscoe Over the summer, Marina KIWIN’S and Marina Key Club wanted to give our amazing Kiwanis Advisor the recognition she deserved. From all of the countless informational emails to all of the supportive hugs, she has truly been essential to the success of Marina Key Club. Together, both clubs, pitched money to purchase an official award from Key Club International. The trophy was in honor of being such a fantastic Kiwanis Advisor and it thanked her for all she does. She has opened so many doors and given Marina Key Club so many opportunities, so I am so grateful to have such a role model in my life.

Kiwanis Family 4th of July Pancake Breakfast The annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast is one of my favorite events. This year, I was in charge of over 280 high school student volunteers. During our 4th of July Pancake Breakfast, HB Kiwanis served thousands of families and runners. I took charge of all the student volunteers when asked to. I instructed the student volunteers to switch jobs, takes breaks, serve food, cleanup, and most importantly, supervised the students to ensure they were working. I made sure student volunteers were greeting the guests, having fun, and representing Kiwanis in a positive manner. With over 9 schools volunteering, it was certainly chaotic, however I made sure the adult volunteers did not have to worry about the community, they just had to flip the pancakes.

Communication

Communication is KEY! Over the past term, as President, I have communicated effectively with my members, officers, and faculty advisors. I reach out to advisors and regional contacts through emails, members through email updates and Facebook updates, and officers through a group chat and group page. Utilizing my historian, I make sure she creates graphics to post online. I ensure that my public relations officer updates the Instagram, Snapchat, and creates Facebook events periodically. Lastly, we update the club website periodically, so people who are unfamiliar with Marina Key Club can learn about the community service and projects we run. In addition to email, I have contacted volunteer organizations and coordinators through phone calls. Communication is important to update members and to ensure members are interested in attending events.

EMAILS

Emails are extremely important in communicating professionally. I use email to communicate with my Kiwanis Advisor and numerous event coordinators. I send club members monthly updates on events because some members do not use other forms of social media. Additionally, I use email to talk about more serious problems amongst the board. I spend a lot of time grammar checking and writing out the email before sending it, because I have learned that you will only be treated professionally if you act professionally. Emails is the most effective way of professional communication.

SOCIAL MEDIA I utilize social media to advertise our upcoming events and activities. My historian and public relations officer are constantly updating the Instagram to ensure that members are aware and signing up for events. Social media is the fastest way to communicate with the club

I use Remind101 to ensure that members have up to date announcements. Sometimes our events have last minute location changes, so we make sure that we send a mass text to the whole club and gain their attention. Remind101 has been extremely helpful in allowing members to receive valuable information quickly.

Miscellaneous As President, I set numerous goals. One was to complete the Chemo Care Project which was started last year. Two, to raise lots of money for our preferred charities. Three, to directly talk to the board and improve the club. And four, to stay organized. By setting goals, I have helped Marina Key Club reach success.

Miss America Organization Children's Miracle Network This year I served as Miss Culver City’s Outstanding Teen through the Miss America Organization. As a representative for Culver City, I was able to connect with the community as serve as a public figure. Throughout my reign, I helped serve and speak through Culver City Kiwanis and Culver City Rotary. It was a truly amazing experience to speak with people outside of the Huntington Beach Community.
