ancer has a way of affecting every single one of us, whether we have it or not. From charity walks to just sitting with a friend to hold their hand, each one of us can bring our unique talents to help in the fight. Pete Fore of Middlebury is one man with a beautiful plan to bring light to the lives of those dealing with the battle every day. It began as hobby-turned-passion. Pete and his wife, Jeanne, used to own an antique store and he is well-known around the area to this day for his lamp restoration. “I’d tear them apart, sandblast the metal parts, repaint them, rewire them, put new parts in if I needed to, buy new lampshades, put them in my shop, and sell them,” Pete reminisces. How his lamps became part of the cancer community is the next piece of the puzzle. “Nean Smith is a good friend of ours and, when she started the cancer walk, we got involved in that. I had come up with the idea to raffle a lamp as a fundraiser project. I thought, ‘well, it might bring several hundred or even a thousand dollars in a raffle, but that’s a one-time deal, then it’s gone’. I tried to figure out what I’d do with the lamp if I didn’t raffle it. I decided we should call it the Traveling Lamp of Hope for the cancer group.” Jeanne says, “We have a lady who makes the lampshade and they stitch the Middlebury symbol for breast cancer that was approved into the lampshade, subtly done so you don’t notice it until the lamp is on. When a lady was going through treatment, we’d find out, we’d take a lamp to her, and she’d turn it on and know that the folks in Middlebury were thinking and praying for her, to give her some type of comfort.” “Every lamp is different in some way,” explains Pete. “The trim, the fringe... it’s been kind of heartwarming – some of our friends have even had them, and Jeanne’s mother has one right now.” There are three in circulation at the moment. The local cancer group decides where each one should go next as it travels. The Traveling Lamp of Hope is a beautiful reminder that your thoughts, your support, and your prayers shine a light even in the darkest of times in someone’s life.

Hoopin’ It Up Boys & Girls Club sponsors basketball & sportsmanship

M
iddlebury Boys & Girls Club Athletic Director Dustin Petre is a lot like any other basketball coach. He is serious about his sport. He wants to be a positive influence on students. He wants to win. But mostly, he wants his players to be successful in life. Petre oversees the sports programs at the Middlebury Boys & Girls Club, which include basketball, volleyball, soccer, and softball. These programs are part of the Michiana Youth Sports League and open to club members ages 13-18 who are not on the regular high school roster in that same sport. Club Director Lara Wheeler reflects the purpose of the program when she says, “It’s a great way for youth to learn basic fundamentals in an encouraging environment while having adult leadership emphasize the importance of sportsmanship and integrity.” As far as learning about sportsmanship, Petre told the story of a former girls’ team “who won every game by over 30 points, yet would show great sportsmanship and respect for their opponents. They would let opponents shoot open shots, wouldn’t try stealing the ball...they would even give advice
to younger opponents. They sometimes would do this during a game which shows how much sportsmanship is valued.”
Gabe Herman (right) and Justin Johnson (center) defend Conner Lantz (left) while teammates Pierce Keck, Brock Ireland, and Dustin Mast strategize on the court.
Conner Lantz, a senior at NHS who has been on the club basketball roster for six years, said one of the best parts about being on the team “is not having all the same pressures that you have at the school level. The last six years have been a lot of fun here.” Petre summarizes the greatest gift of all in the program: “Seeing members succeed in life that was first created from joining a sports team at the Boys & Girls Club means the world to me.”

Town Manager Report
Middlebury’s
Parks Department By Mark Salee
T
his month’s topic is our Park Department. The Town park system consists of six park areas: East and Memorial parks located in the Town Center opposite each other on Main Street; Riverbend Park located on the Little Elkhart River east of Town; Krider World’s Fair Garden Park on Bristol Avenue northwest of Town; Troyer Park located in the Deer Run neighborhood south of Town; and the Greenway Linear Park, a 1.82 mile section of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, connecting Middlebury to Shipshewana and Goshen. Tom Enright is starting his sixth year as the Park Department Manager for the Town. Tom has a Natural Resources Management degree from Grand Valley State University and was formerly the Park Manager/Naturalist at Flushing Township Nature Park and Assistant Park Manager at Madeline Bertrand Park, both in Michigan. Tom is the only full-time employee in the Park Department, with two part-time employees that assist with park maintenance and programs throughout the year. Though mowing and landscaping are a big part of the day-to-day operations of a park department, as well as maintenance of park equipment, our Park Department does so much more. Currently, they’re constructing a boardwalk out of dying Ash trees cut from our parks which will be installed in Riverbend Park, connecting the park trails to the Villas of River Park neighborhood. The Park Department was recently awarded a grant to develop the new Old Mill Park and Trail along the Little Elkhart River across from the former Wanberg Popcorn facility. The Trails of Middlebury is a plan developed by the department to connect the parks with multi-use trails, sidewalks, and bike lanes to promote a healthy, environmentally-friendly mode of

access around our Town. The Park Department is very involved with outdoor recreation programming and planning. Most of the Town’s Third Friday events include a program developed and implemented by the department. The long-running kids’ Summer Fun Program is administered by the Park Department as well as the annual River Fest. Our Park Department is always looking for volunteers to help with projects and programs. If interested, give Tom a call at 825-3283.
Tree Removal Will Change Look of Riverbend Park Thanks to an invasive insect, the Emerald Ash Borer, 26 dead ash trees are being removed from Riverbend Park. Most of the trees are grouped together between the pond and the river in the park. The removal of the mature trees will drastically alter the look and character of the park. A planting plan of native trees in the park will enhance the aesthetics and provide greater diversity. The Park Department is working with Indiana Wood, Michiana Tree Works, and the Town Tree Board to safely remove the trees. We could use your help. There will be a huge amount of fire wood available. On Friday and Saturday, February 7th & 8th, people may come to Riverbend Park to cut and haul away wood. Please bring your own equipment and a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Individuals must be over 18, must sign a waiver, and must preregister by calling 825-1499 before collecting wood at the park. No trailers, please!

These murals once hung together on Merlin’s barn, creating a decorative combination of color against a distressed wooden canvas. Today, Merlin has a different mural hanging on the barn.
On Your Own Front
Barn Door By Tammy Tilley
Middlebury resident Merlin Miller paints barn quilt murals, some By Tammy Tilley of the prettiest sights to see along the Middlebury roads. The white paint is peeling from the sides of his two-story barn just a stone’s throw from his home’s back door, but hardly anyone notices.
a barn quilt mural was hung in the store from the Elkhart County CVB. Visitors came in asking to purchase similar items.
That’s because they’re taking in the beauty of the colorful barn quilt mural hanging on the front of the barn. As a matter of fact, the balance of the mural against the distressed siding provides a rich interest that the barn normally wouldn’t have.
“After several years of people asking,” said Miller, “I decided to make some.
Welcome to Wayne Street Studio, the home of Merlin Miller and location of his business, where Miller began painting barn quilts just a little over a year ago.
Since then, the painter has sold several murals painted on wooden canvases (as opposed to painting directly onto the barn or building). He also has painted a mural in Southern Indiana and two in Iowa.
How The Business Grew
The craftsman has worked at Varns and Hoover Hardware for thirty-three years; three years ago, 12 InMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2014
“I painted a few for the [2012] Middlebury Fall Festival just to see what kind of response I would get, and I had strong feedback,” he said.
He also painted a mural called “Fall Splendor” a little over a year ago, combining rich fall colors of gold, orange, and red.
Back in the town of Middlebury, you’ll see Miller’s work hanging on his neighbor’s barn on the property of Greg and Monica Yoder. “That was a Christmas present from me to them,” Miller said. “They’re great neighbors, and this was my way of showing my appreciation.” Another mural can be seen on Warren Street just southwest of the former popcorn plant. Tom and Ruby Bontrager commissioned Miller to paint a mural on their garage door.
Tools and that perfect shade of green are ready for Merlin as he creates murals to decorate barns, sheds, garages, and wooden canvases. Merlin mixes his own paints to come up with the perfect colors for his murals.
Said Miller, “They approached me after the Fall Festival a year ago. Together we came up with various designs to match the colors of their house. “We decided on the quilt pattern called ‘Corn & Beans.’ I picked out the colors, and they liked it.”
How It Works
Patterns for the popular paintings come both from quilting books and from Miller’s creative mind. His wife Shirley has been a quilter for many years, so he sometimes gathers inspiration from her interests. One unfinished sign in the studio comes from an original pattern Miller created. Standing tall and regal, this unnamed mural displays an autumn scene with sky and grass and a giant fall tree. “I have no idea how long this pattern will take me to paint, but I can say it’s very detailed,” he mused.
The artist first lays the pattern out on a small block, figuring out all the angles, lines, and colors. Then he transfers the pattern onto a large block, drawing everything out with a pencil. “Then I freehand paint it,” he adds, as if it’s no big deal to add layers of color and detail to each piece. “I don’t tape anything off.” The Middlebury resident hopes to provide barn quilt paintings according to each customer’s desire. “I want to make what people want in the pattern they want and in the colors they want.”
Merlin Miller of Wayne Street Studios carefully paints along the lines of a barn quilt mural he’s creating. Miller freehand paints each piece rather than taping off lines.

FROZEN
Middlebury is taken by freezing temperatures and blizzards captured by Gloria Salavarria After days of heavy snow the first week of January, on Monday morning I had a bad case of cabin fever and decided that I’d find out what happened to Middlebury after the Polar Vortex hit. Within the last 24 hours, around 2 feet of snow had fallen and the temperatures had plummeted to below zero but I wasn’t sure if I could get out of my garage and so at sunrise, I opened the garage door and this is what I saw…

As I headed toward to wn in my car, I saw th at Jerry Hart was out w ith his snow blower cle ar in g his drive. This is all th at I saw or heard—fo lks trying to clear the snow away so they could ge t out.
As I approached the downtown business district, there was dead silence and huge piles of snow. The town’s street department workers had been out early to clear the main streets but the sidewalks remained to be cleared. An hour later, I came back through town but from the south. On the east side of the street, there was more snow piled up because the drifting snow accumulated more on the east side than the west side where the buildings blocked the wind which was coming out of the west.
The crew hadn’t gotten to my house yet and so I decided to continue out into the countryside to see what I could see. Meanwhile I appreciated the contractor’s crew as they do an excellent job in clearing the snow.

What’s Happening at OVE A Christmas Gift for the Olson Family
E
rik Olson surprised his kids at Orchard View Elementary School after coming home from Afghanistan. They drove straight from the airport to the school and Ethan and Elyse Olson were called down to the office for an “eye check” only to find out their dad had come home! What a happy reunion. Orchard View Elementary is very fortunate to have such a dedicated PTO that sees our school community as a contributor to our entire Middlebury community. Recently PTO decided to use funds raised at several 2013 events to construct a horse / buggy shelter for our Amish families in our community when at OVE or other schools on campus. It was constructed prior to Christmas and houses up to four buggies/horses. Thank you to the OVE PTO for helping us to continue to strengthen that unity within our Middlebury Community.

NMS Students Learn About
Living with a Disability T he 2nd annual Ability Day was held at NMS on January 16th. Students had opportunities to learn what it would be like to complete tasks with a disability.
Students in 7-8th grades rotated between two stations that simulate blindness and deafness and a third station to listen to members in the local community speak about what it is like for them to live with their disabilities and challenges they face. Sixth grade students took turns using a wheelchair, walking with a cane while blindfolded and unwrapping presents and candy with one hand to simulate physical disabilities. After students participated in the simulations they went to the auditorium to watch some clips from the series “What Would You Do?” Then they watched a video presentation compiled by the Functional Skills teachers, students and the middle school staff that have family members with a disability. The heartwarming video introduced children from the functional skills class and taught students how to be a good friend to these students and how to approach them when they pass in the hall.
By Danielle Miller
8th grader Micah Yoder volunteers in Functional Skills class. “I help out with the kids; we all have a lot of fun. I think Ability Day is good for other kids to see how hard it is for other kids and how much we take for granted,” Micah said. Other students that have not previously helped in the Functional Skills classes now show an interest after Ability Day. “I feel like no one in the school would criticize them now that they see what they go through,” 8th grader Nick Thacker said. Ability Day concluded with a guest speaker giving a motivational speech addressing the whole school in the gym. Brett Eastburn was born with no arms and no legs and gives speeches to children with the theme, “Learn how to turn handicaps into obstacles which can be overcome!” Eastburn is also a stand-up comedian and had the children applauding and laughing during his demonstrations.

One of America’s
Favorite Snacks has Middlebury Connections
This is the building today that was once home to the packing of Cracker Jack and other well-known popcorn labels. Photo Credit: Gloria Salavarria. By Tammy Tilley
By Tammy Tilley
what we may not know is that the building is the oldest in Middlebury and that it has a rich and interesting history.
The oldest building and the oldest business in Middlebury has housed several milling operations. The original structure still stands on East Warren Street and last operated as The Wanberg Popcorn Plant. Photo credit: Gloria Salavarria.
Do you remember as a
According to the book, “Middlebury, The Town Beautiful,” sometime around 1940 the building started operating as a popcorn processing plant. We would recognize many of the popcorn labels packaged here, including Cracker Jack, Crunch and Munch, and Pillsbury. After several ownership changes, Forrest Wanberg, Jr. purchased the company from Borden Foods Corporation in 1983, renaming it “Indiana Popcorn.”
This photo is of an old scale that wagons from the outside would back up to in order to weigh the popcorn, but today it’s used as a checkerboard table. Photo credit: Sunday Hale.

child, tearing back the top of the box, and while crunching, being all too eager to find the prize at the bottom of the box? Or singing about it in the classic song, “Take Me Out to the Ball Game?” That snack, of course, is none other than Cracker Jack, invented in the 1800s but making its way to Middlebury sometime after 1940.
Much of the equipment is still in the facility and in working order. You can also see artifacts of the building’s rich past, including packages decorating shelves and walls.

So the next time your family grabs a bowl of popcorn or a box of Cracker Jack, you can also think about the possibility that at one time, that popcorn easily could have been packaged right here in Middlebury.

Maple Sugaring: Making Liquid Gold from Trees Story and photos provided by Carla Gull
I love pouring sticky golden goodness on pancakes and waffles. At this time of year, we start thinking about maple sugaring to restock supplies.
When to Tap
Moving back to the area, we found numerous maple trees on our property. We look forward to tapping them in late winter when the nights are below freezing and the days warm above freezing. The sap starts flowing and it is the perfect time to start collecting. While there are more scientific ways, I often watch when the neighbors start tapping! Some ask neighbors if they can tap the trees on their property and then share some of the bounty with the tree owners.
Drilling a Hole in the Maple Tree
The Process
Maple sugaring is a simple process, but it does take time. It consists of collecting the sap, boiling it down to evaporate the water content, and storing it for later use. Supplies are available at local hardware stores. The basics include a drill for drilling a hole in the tree, a spile to keep the hole open and direct the sap flow, and a food grade bucket for collecting the sap. After the sap is collected, it’s time to boil it down outside. Options for cooking it include improvised ovens of cinder blocks, old metal barrels, or a turkey fryer. Closer to the finishing stages we bring it inside to watch closely. It takes 35 to 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. We use a thermometer to know when the syrup is done, filter it, and store it in mason jars in the refrigerator.
Supplies Neede d:
• drill • drill bit (sized to spile) • spiles and poss ibly tubing • buckets to colle ct and store sap • pots to boil sa p • heat source fo r outside • Maple trees • thermometer Gathering the Sap

I love seeing jars of our amber colored goodness! I know exactly where the syrup came from and how it was processed. To learn more, there are various classes and festivals for maple sugaring in our area, such as Maplewood Nature Center, Elkhart County Parks, Bendix Woods, and Wakarusa. Time to pour the syrup!

A Place for More than Adopting Pets
Sunfire thanks you. Heathcliff thanks you. So do Rembrandt, Phoebe and Monica. Streusel, Ginger, and Howard thank you, too.
By Tammy Tilley
Sunfire, Healthcliff, and Rembrandt are beautiful, healthy cats that personify their names. Phoebe and Monica are not names from a sitcom; they’re the names of two rabbits. These animals, plus others, are living at the Humane Society of Elkhart County. Of course the Humane Society wants you to apply and, if approved, adopt one of their hundreds of pets they care for on a monthly basis. As Executive Director Anne K. Reel affectionately says, “Animals are the voiceless.” The staff believes each animal is special, having a story to share and love to give a family. But the Humane Society is much more than a place to adopt your next pet; it also provides
special events along with opportunities to volunteer time and give donations. It is also a place where, if you’re a struggling family with pets, you can come in order to get help.
Contact the Humane Society of Elkhart County at 574.848.4225 or www.ElkhartHumaneSociety.org
For February, Reel said this month is “National Prevent a Litter Month. Spaying and neutering your pets is not only healthy for the pet but helps to reduce unwanted animals that end up at shelters or become stray and abandoned animals. “There is a low cost spay/neuter clinic in Granger, and there is a state spay/neuter program which allows economically challenged individuals to apply for spay/neuter funds.” Links can be found on the Humane Society of Elkhart County’s website.
Streusel – Streusel is a young, confident boy who came to the shelter as a stray. He is three years old and ready to have a family again! Take advantage of our companion program and adopt today!
Howard – Howard is a spunky boy who would benefit from an active home. He would love to go to some basic obedience classes. Come meet Howard! You won’t be able to leave without him!

Congratulations to
Nick Hooley! Nick Hooley, a Northridge Middle School 8th grader, placed second in the national NFL sponsored Punt, Pass and Kick event. He punted 165 feet, kicked 135 feet, and passed 163 feet, with cumulative totals just one foot short of the winning distance. Nick stood on the field during pre-game warm-ups before the Denver-San Diego divisional playoff game in Denver on Sunday, January 12th.
Nick playing quarterback for his 8th grade team.
Nick's journey started with a local Punt, Pass & Kick competition in Middlebury, and then he moved on to the regional competition in Gary, then to the team competition in Chicago, before moving on to compete at the national level against the best 12- and 13-year-olds in the country. Last year, Nick finished ninth nationally.
