Valentine Snow Day! OUTDOOR LIVING
SPRAY BOTTLES WITH FOOD COLORING - Drop a few drops of food coloring in a clean spray bottle with water. Snow painting with spray bottles can be used in a variety of ways, such as outlining a heart, doing a resist spray over a heart cut-out, or writing someone’s name. The white snow is a perfect canvas.
WOODEN HEART DECORATIONS - Use permanent markers to decorate wooden hearts. These can be given to others, used for hide and seek, or provide some nice colors and shapes while you celebrate. HEARTS IN NATURE - Decorate your outdoor space with pictures of hearts found in nature strung along a piece of twine. Find hearts in nature as well! LOOSE PARTS HEARTS - Make heart shapes out of natural objects and other loose parts. I HEART NATURE - Leave heart cut-outs near nature you love. Share your great nature finds with others. HEART HUNT - Hide heart cut-outs along a trail to find.
CEREAL HEARTS FOR THE BIRDS - String plain oat circles on a pink, red, or purple chenille stem. Bend into a heart shape and hang on a branch for the birds.
Making a little winter magic for Valentine’s Day can help friendships grow, add more outdoor hours to the winter days, and allow us to celebrate. Choose one or many options to brighten your neighborhood and relationships this February.
Valentine’s Day can be a perfect time to gather outdoors to celebrate! The white snow and icicles can be a perfect back drop for red, pink, and purple fun. Invite grandchildren, neighborhood kids, your child’s friends, or your own friends over for a variety of heart filled options. Here are a few ways you might celebrate:
COLORED ICE HEARTS - Fill heart shaped molds
with a little food coloring and water. Freeze the hearts to brighten up the snowy February days. Add in a string before frozen to hang from trees or leave loose to play with the hearts outside.
STICK VALENTINES - Use potato peelers to peel back part of the bark on a freshly cut stick. Write a Valentine message with permanent marker on the cleared part, such as “Let’s stick together!”
Sticks can be great Valentines! 6 inMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2022

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Once again Star Fleet Trucking has agreed to sponsor the Parks’ page in InMiddlebury for another year. This is our best means of communicating with the public and we truly appreciate your help!
Thursday, February 16, 4:30 p.m. Middlebury Public Library Community Room Join Park Superintendent Tom Enright for a wildlife program. Come learn how animals live in the winter. Some migrate to warmer places, some hibernate, and others stay active in the cold winter. Touch animal furs, crawl through the Sleepy Log to spy on hibernating animals, and make a special heart shaped suet cake to take home and feed the birds.

I volunteer for Middlebury Parks by donating time and service in the Krider Worlds Fair Garden. When Kim Clarke asked for volunteers to lead tours in the Garden, I wanted to participate, and “Like father, like son.” do so whenever I can. I have been volunteering in Middlebury Parks for about ten years. I helped develop and maintain the rose garden in Krider Garden. My wife Joyce was instrumental in obtaining the Greek statue Hebe for the upper garden. I have gained a deeper appreciation for the Middlebury Parks and am honored as a third-generation Krider to be able to contribute to the overall improvement of the garden.

Be A Star Program Expanded To Reach Younger Kids At Middlebury Club The mission at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County is to empower all young people – especially those who need us most – to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. So when there are areas where members are struggling, the team sets out to find ways to help. That’s exactly what happened at the Middlebury Clubhouse. Marisa Lutton saw a need among the second and third graders she works with and adapted a national program. “Marisa brought the program to me because she saw a need for the younger kids to be able to work on friendship problems and ways to recognize bullying,” said Middlebury Area Director Erin McNeal. They adapted the “Be a STAR” curriculum – which is designed for older kids – to meet the needs of the younger age group. The overall program is part of WWE’s multi-year national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America to enhance youth development at local Clubs across the country. The partnership focuses on bullying prevention efforts and its mission to encourage young people to treat each other with respect
through education and grassroots initiatives. “They are able to adapt the program to real-life scenarios. They talk about things they see without pointing fingers. She makes it relatable because she knows what their needs and problems are,” McNeal said. “The lessons could translate to the younger group, but I needed to adjust them to be more active instead of book lessons that are geared to the older kids,” Lutton said. “I was surprised to see how they got into it. I wasn’t sure they would be so excited to take part. They would ask me when we were going to be doing the next lesson.” Thirty kids in second and third grade took part in the 13 week program during the fall. Fourth and fifth graders started taking part in January. Lutton took care to make sure there was a variety of people in the program. “I included kids who were having issues, but also kids who were good role models,” she said. And it appears to be paying off.

FINDING COMMON GROUND:
THE LEGENDARY GRIND
For Dena Hostetler, owner of The Legendary Grind in downtown Middlebury, coming up with new ideas for recipes is simple: start with a tried-and-true template and have fun with it. “We can use a basic recipe to make lemon-raspberry, blackberry-lemon, cinnamon chip scones… We think of a different flavor that would be good and just say, let’s try it!” This strategy has served her well, from launching a tiny shop just outside of downtown to recently
renovating her current space in the Middlebury Mercantile. Dena grew up in Pennsylvania, moving to Topeka with her family when she was 13. As a teenager, she got summer jobs working in restaurants (one of which was the Blue Gate in Shipshewana), starting washing dishes and eventually working her way up to assistant manager. Along the way she accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in both backand front-of-house skills. “Finally, you come to the point where you think, hm, if I can manage this, how about something a little bigger?” She reached out to Marcus and Debra Miller (friends and owners of Main Street Roasters in Nappanee) to train behind their counters, adding coffee knowledge to her expertise in food. Not only did she learn the differences between espresso drinks like macchiatos, breves, and cortados, she learned just how much she enjoyed working with coffee. “I really liked it! That’s when I decided I really wanted to go the coffee route.” To this day, she gets her coffee fresh-roasted from Main Street Roasters. In 2009, Dena launched The Legendary Grind with help from her mother, sister, and niece, serving up inMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2022 13
breakfast and lunch alongside coffee and tea out of a space in the quonset across from Hardings. A year and a half after this launch, a perfect spot became available downtown in the Middlebury Mercantile. From the start, Dena began applying her knowledge from the restaurant industry. Because she was working with limited space, she created her menu with a simple kitchen setup in mind. “We have ovens to bake our pastries, a panini grill, and a steam table to keep soups hot.” She drew from her experience in front-of-house serving customers, and with a bit of help from a friend added practical accounting and business management skills to her arsenal. Her favorite work, however, has always been the hands-on creative tasks of making pastries and pulling shots for lattes. “I started a coffee shop because I like making coffee! I’ll still come up and work when we’re short a shift. It’s nice; I can pitch in if I want to make some coffee for customers.” The Legendary Grind has grown consistently since it opened in 2009, typically serving around 300-350 customers every day with peaks on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays. Hannah Zimmerman, who has been on staff at the Grind for 8 years, says that the base of that growth comes from the steady support of long-time customers: “We’ve grown a lot in the time that I’ve been a part of The Legendary Grind, but we still have so many originals. I love making connections with customers old and new and gaining lifelong friends in my co-workers.” To-go orders have exploded in the last two years, and Dena and her team have adjusted to this boom by rearranging their current space for maximum efficiency, adding a pick-up window with access from the kitchen so that customers can grab and go straight from the outside. The renovations (which also include new flooring, covered outdoor patio seating, and upgraded equipment) also feature a new configuration for the coffee bar and registers, opening up the once-crowded pastry counter so customers can sit there. In addition to all of this, Dena is rebranding logos and menus, giving every inch of the space a fresh new look and feel. At the time of
14 inMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2022
this interview, construction was about to begin; Dena and her team are looking forward to welcoming customers to their updated space starting in early February. Follow them at their Facebook page and on Instagram (@thelegendarygrind) for updates. All of this change, of course, takes a village. Dena is grateful for the ongoing support of her family (who still live in the area), friends, and employees, who have grown from 3 to 14, including her general manager and assistant. In particular, her team has pitched in with the rebranding, designing both the menus and the recipes behind them. “My girls have been amazing in supporting me and helping me along with it… I like involving my employees, finding out what they are interested in and passionate about. Every one of them comes in and brings a certain gift,” Dena says, noting that finding and using these gifts is “a recipe for a good place to work; it gives ownership and purpose.” Her staff attest to the atmosphere at Legendary Grind being very in keeping with that of Middlebury; Hannah says: “I’ve been here for 8 years, so I always joke about the poor customers having had to watch me grow up. I love it though, the community, everyone knowing each other, it’s really special being a part of that small-town feel.” Stacey Miller, who has been with the team for 4 years, pointed out that the customers contribute to that positive environment. “My co-workers have become like family and the customers have become friends. Our customers are so kind and make it so fun to serve them.” Several newer members of the team affirmed
that it doesn’t take long to feel like part of the family. Ruthie Miller says, “The loyalty is real. I think Dena has created something incredible and I’m excited to be a part of it!” Rita Eash says, “Legendary has such a welcoming, happy environment that I have loved from the day I started working here.” The current renovation enhances the cozy tone of The Legendary Grind, providing quick service for those on the go and space to sit and connect over a cup of coffee and a muffin. In this sense, it’s one of many important “third spaces” of Middlebury, gathering places outside of home and work that provide common ground for members of the community. Dena loves seeing people come in for a little time away or a conversation with a friend. “I try to provide a relaxing atmosphere for people to enjoy themselves.” This atmosphere contributes to the thing Dena loves most about Middlebury: its small-town, close-knit feel. Hannah affirms that Dena sets the tone for it all: “We have the absolute best boss. She will do all that’s possible to keep us employees and our customers happy. I’m confident that’s what makes this place so special.” When she’s not at The Legendary Grind, Dena enjoys connecting with friends, checking out other coffee shops, and traveling. On recent trips to visit her friends and family in Pennsylvania, she took advantage of the beautiful hiking at parks like Greenwood Furnace. Perhaps the most important question of all in our conversation was: what are Dena’s favorite items on the menu at the Grind? She recommends a maple
breve (made with real maple syrup and steamed half-and-half), paired with either a lemon-raspberry or chocolate-chocolate chip muffin. Whatever they order when they walk in, customers are sure to find that the winning recipe for The Legendary Grind combines simple ingredients like experience, hard work, and creativity to make something greater than the sum of its parts. And the result is much like Dena’s cinnamon-roll muffin or her “Quad-Shot On the Rocks” (this writer’s favorite): legendary.

STABLE GROUNDS Where horses are the teachers

Stable Grounds held their first Holiday Open House on December 9th to raise awareness about their equine assisted therapy program that has been providing Middlebury Community School students with mental health support since it opened its doors in August. Many heard students saying things like, “Dad come see the horse I like to work with when I come here!” While it is no surprise there is a need for mental health support, the staff was overwhelmed by the numbers of students referred within the first few weeks of opening. This one of a kind partnership between Middlebury Community Schools and Stable Grounds hit the ground 16 inMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2022
running providing the school system with mental health support for students struggling with anxiety, depression, anger, grief, and many other issues in a unique way. Students are referred by their teachers, counselors, and principals to a program that facilitates mental health therapy utilizing miniature horses and donkeys. They are transported to the facility throughout the school day using school buses. Once there, a mental health professional and equine specialist create activities in the arena to address goals that promote healing, challenge students to grow, and build skills and self- confidence. Stable Grounds, Inc is a 501c3 non-profit that was founded with generous donations from the community that allowed for an exceptional facility to be built on a donated slice of land adjacent to campus. The school district supports the personnel, utilities, transportation,
and grounds maintenance. The non-profit Stable Grounds is responsible for providing the necessities for the animals such as feed, hay, and veterinary care. Over 150 visitors were greeted at the open house with cookies and hot chocolate while they talked with staff, toured the facility, and met the miniature horses and donkeys. Students, parents, teachers, and community members dropped by to hear more about the program and see for themselves how it works. The program serves all ages of students from kindergarten to seniors in high school. The purpose of the open house was not only to share what great things have been happening but also to raise awareness of the need for continued donations to finish the facility and maintain the animals for years to come. “We really appreciate the overwhelming support of the Middlebury community and their generosity,” stated Jane Allen, former superintendent of Middlebury Community Schools and current board member of Stable Grounds board of directors. “We have big plans for this program, and while we hope to continue to raise funds to support the animals, we also are looking for generous donors to allow us to expand the facility and finish out some of the building projects that we still have in the works.” For more information, check out the Stable Grounds, Inc Facebook page and their Instagram feed at stable_ grounds_middlebury. Anyone wishing to donate may send checks to Stable Grounds, Inc at 56644 Northridge Drive, Middlebury, IN 46540.

Good Things Happened in 2021 for our Local Veterans The year began with the Covid virus shut downs and much anxiety about sharing the germs. We canceled many Friday night dinners. • But, that didn’t stop our hard working Auxiliary women. We dispersed $800 to several local veterans in January. • March - we nominated new officers and gave a $500 gift from the Poppy Fund to one of our local veterans to help with service dog training. We also served New Paris Speedway a hearty meal on March 13. • May - we dispersed another $1000 to two Veterans and The Miller’s Vets in South Bend. We served breakfast and lunch for the Memorial Day events. We chose the Poppy Queens for 2021 - Mary Lou Heign, Joann Kauffman Grimm, and Janet Miller with Mike Christophel escorting them in his beautiful renovated convertible. We also collected donations at the Chalet for Poppies which grossed $3145 in money available to be used for our veterans in the future. • June - we donated $500 to the organization Blue Star Moms. • September – we donated to several of our local veterans $840, to the Indiana Veterans Home (IVH) for arts and crafts and $420, for the organization HUGS, and $10,000 to the Miller’s Vets, to help expand their facility to house more needy homeless veterans. In September we also hosted our Auxiliary District
#3 meeting on September 11 and the Divertin Dinner on September 27. • November - the Auxiliary had a table set up for the 100th Anniversary Celebration of our Local #210 Legion. • December - we hosted our monthly meeting at Rulli’s to celebrate the holiday season, which we were asked to bring canned and boxed goods for the Indiana Veterans Clinic in lieu of exchanging gifts. We collected a trunk load of food, which Marilyn Cook delivered along with a check for $210. We sent a gift of $210 for Shop with the Cops and also sent $200 to IVH for the two veterans we sponsor. Nominations of 2022 Auxiliary officers will begin in February and continue in March with the election in April and installation at the May meeting. All meetings are being held at the Middlebury Library the 1st Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. All Auxiliary members are invited to attend these meetings. You may nominate a member by emailing the name and position to cindaolinger@ gmail.com. Overall, I would say we had a very awesome year. We helped the veterans with almost $15,200. We thank the community for your participation in our events. Cinda Olinger Auxiliary President Post #210

Northridge continues to boost graduation rates The most recent high school graduation rates were recently released in Indiana. The statewide graduation rate fell to 86.69%. As first reported by the Elkhart Truth, six Elkhart County high schools saw a dip in their overall graduation rate, but that was not the case for Northridge High School. There is great cause to celebrate in Middlebury as Northridge High School achieved a graduation rate of 93.37% and Northridge was the only high school in Elkhart County to see an improvement in graduation rates during the current pandemic.
22 inMiddlebury Magazine | FEBRUARY 2022
Superintendent Dr. Jayson Snyder pointed out that this increase in the graduation rate at Northridge is a credit to everyone involved with Middlebury Community Schools. Snyder stated, “We are thankful for the dedicated educators, determined students, and supportive parents who have worked together to earn this distinction. Over the last few years, the pandemic has made things challenging, but this is a resilient community where we place a high value on education. I am incredibly proud of everyone associated with our school district. We have consistent leadership from our school board, and amazing people working in all of our schools. I have no doubt we will continue to do great things for the students of this community.”
