Middlebury Gives Back |
Preschools
around TOWN
By Stephanie J. Salisbury
Generosity has no age limit. Our local preschools encourage their small students to learn kindness early by giving back to the community even at their young ages! Rachel Scroggins, Lead Teacher at Pleasant Oaks Preschool, says one of the ways their kids give back is through Kid Packs for the Middlebury Food Drive. “Our kids take home chore charts; for every chore they do at home they earn an item for the food pantry donation if their parents want to partcipate. The kids are really proud of themselves because they earn all of the food that they bring. The week before Christmas break, we go on a field trip to the pantry. The kids and a parent take the food they have collected, tour the food pantry and then go into First Mennonite Church. There, the kids and their parents help assemble kid packs: bags full of ‘goodies’ that Ms. Pam at the pantry passes out to families for their kids. They contain things like ramen noodles, pudding cups, drink boxes, cookies, etc. Each year, our school tries to pack more kid packs than we did the year before. This year, the kids were so proud to have packed 400! We teach them that each bag they pack goes to a special little kid and makes their heart happy to have such a special treat.” Pleasant Oaks students also participate in packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child, and the scholarship program at the preschool offers scholarships to two local families who cannot afford to pay the tuition.
Pleasant Oaks Preschool 13307 CR 16 • 825-2325 pops4kids@live.com • www.firstmennonite.net www.Facebook.com/pleasant.o.preschool REGISTRATION INFO: Public registration began February 3. Forms can be picked up at the preschool. $20 registration fee. All students must be 4 years old by September 1, 2014 to register for either class option: KPREP is a Monday, Wednesday , Friday class 9 am 1 pm. Kids pack a lunch. Tuition: $129/mo. POPS is on Tuesday and Thursday 9 am - noon. Tuition: $90/mo. Both classes are geared towards kindergarten readiness, although POPS class usually has slightly younger children that take KPREP the following year.
LaDonna Wright, Executive Director of Little Saints Child Care & Preschool Ministry, also tells how their preschool gives back to the community. “Little Saints partners with various programs throughout the year,” she says. “A couple of them include regularly taking donations for the food pantry and, most recently, we partnered with a program in which parents could donate needed items for veterans.” Teaching your children kindness, generosity, and community involvement begins at home, but we’re grateful to have such caring schools in Middlebury for our little ones!

THINK SPRING
By Monica Yoder
Monica Yoder is an avid, experienced, practical gardener who specializes in vegetables and wildlife-attracting plants. She is an Indiana Master Naturalist and a member of the Elkhart County Master Naturalist Steering Committee. Monica has worked at Varns and Hoover Hardware for nineteen years and maintains the gardening and bird feeding section.
Spring cleaning?
Don’t be too quick in removing leaves, mulch and spent foliage from last year’s growing season. Not only does it expose the crowns of plants and the precious soil to the harsh ups and downs of Indiana’s spring weather, but what some of us look at as a “mess” are actually homes and nurseries to a summer’s worth of butterflies, fireflies, moths, and other essential pollinators. Only about 3% of the world’s insects are harmful or destructive. Many of the others are beautiful, beneficial friends, food for songbirds or predators of the “bad guys”. When cleaning up try adding the debris to a compost pile or finding an inconspicuous corner of your property to create a brush pile.
Plant on paper first
Now is the time to sketch out your vegetable garden plans. Flip through some seed catalogs whether in your lap or on the internet for inspiration and begin creating a “wish list”. Next pare that list down to realistically fit your space, explore succession planting or decide to expand your garden, then begin to source your seeds and plants. Buy local to support our community; we are blessed with many quality greenhouses, garden centers and hardware stores. Save mail order (and shipping charges) for the rare, unique must-haves. As you plan, be sure to save a planting bed, row or at least a container for planting something new, special or surprising. A gardener has got to have fun!

Keep Middlebury blooming!
Serving as both a volunteer and a board member of Middlebury Parks has taught me good things just don’t “happen.” Much thought, planning, work–and expense–goes into the plantings and landscaping in the parks and especially into the cascades of petunias gracing the iconic light poles of our downtown. Did you know you have your friends and neighbors to thank for making those flowers bloom? Individuals, families, neighborhoods, community groups and businesses are encourage to contribute to the Middlebury Town Flower Fund by contacting the Middlebury Park Department at (574)825-1499. Sponsor a petunia basket, make a donation for a specific landscape project or just volunteer your time and add to the quality of life in our beautiful town.

Geocaching at Krider Garden
Using GPS devices to find the cache
Dr. Carla Gull blogs at www.InsideOutsideMichiana.com. She is often seen with four tag-along explorers in the greater Michiana area.
Geocaching 101: A Technological Adventure Story and photos provided by Carla Gull
Geocaching combines technology, nature, family, adventure, exercise, and fresh air. My husband gets technology, I get nature, and we have fun as a family exploring together. Trackables are moved from cache to cache
Finding a lamp post geocache on vacation
What Is It?
As GPS accuracy improved, a man left a bucket containing goodies in Oregon and posted the coordinates on the Internet. The principle was simple: take something, leave something. Others began similar hides and coordinates were put on a website to search and record finds. Today, geocachers across the world search for hidden items using GPS units.
Outdoor Living | LIVING well
Your First Find
Following the GPS, get closer to the hide. Geoacachers blend in as they stealthily find the cache. We use kids as a cover while we search. We start looking in obvious places, noting where nature and humans intersect -- an extra bolt on the fence, a tube hanging from a branch, or an ammo box hidden in the hollow of a tree. After finding the cache, trade any desired items, sign the log with your geocaching name, and replace everything as you found it. Log the find once you return home on your computer or from your app.
Keep On Caching
There are about 25 geocaches in the greater Middlebury area, with more as you extend the search. Many find harder caches, move trackable items, hide their own caches, meet with other cachers, or attend geocaching events. Geocaching takes us to country roads, hidden cemeteries, big box parking lots, and on great hikes! We enjoy the adventures as we find new places in our area, learn about our environment, and play this hide and seek game! To find out more visit Geocaching.com.
Getting Started
A unique hide
Enter your zip code at geocaching.com to find nearby geocaches. Beginner caches are highlighted in green. The website lists the ease of the find, terrain, size of the cache, accessibility, etc. Download the coordinates on a GPS or use a smart phone app and head out to hunt!

featured STORY | Gohn Bros.
A Family Affair By Tammy Tilley
Happy 110th Anniversary, Gohn Brothers. But wait, is “Gohn” pronounced “goon” or is it “gon?” While the correct saying is debated among Middlebury residents and visitors, Gohn Brothers continues to open its doors daily, meeting customers’ needs with a downhome smile and a nostalgic flair.
In The Beginning…
Travel back in time to the 1800s when George Gohn settled in Middlebury from Pennsylvania. After working in town for a while, he built and ran Gohn’s Department Store. This retail store, like many department stores in its day, carried everything from jewelry to groceries. In 1904, George sold the business to the second generation, his sons Arthur and Charles. Arthur was a tailor, so the store narrowed its focus to clothing and fabrics. Monica, the granddaughter, recalls, “With Grandfather being a tailor, he made Amish Sunday suits, very nice suits. They came to him asking for them.” In 1947, the store switched hands again to the third generation and owner Lamar Gohn. “Because of Grandfather’s influence,” explained Monica, “my father really worked to get the Amish people the goods and items they needed.”
This photo, taken in the early 1900s, features the original Gohn Department Store that J.C. Gohn built in 1906. 12 InMiddlebury Magazine | MARCH 2014

Today…
Lamar’s daughter Monica and her husband John Swartzentruber have owned and operated the business since 1984, making them the fourth generation family proprietors. “We’ve really tried to maintain and honor the business in the way it was a hundred years ago,” said Monica. “We think of ourselves as an old-fashioned business, even though we also have to keep up with some current items people want and need.” Pointing around the store, Monica adds: “What you see now are the original tin ceiling and wooden floors from 1904. We still have the squeaky rickety floors people seem to love. It reminds them of the good ole’ days.” InMiddlebury Magazine | MARCH 2014 13

Gohn Brothers…from A to Z
When you walk through the front door of Gohn Brothers, located on Main Street, you will feel like you stepped back in time. However, as you browse, you may find yourself growing more and more fond of this store with its heavy, deep shelving, its line of fabrics spanning the length of the entire wall, and simple displays of both everyday essentials and hard-to-find items. Just what all does Gohn Brothers carry in its store? We made a list from A-Z, and we haven’t touched upon everything they sell. Whatever you need, if it’s not too fancy, try Gohn Brothers first. A = Amish clothing B = bonnets, books, & bow ties C = cotton stockings D = diaper pins E = elastic F = floss & fur buggy robes G = gloves & games H = hats, hairpins, & handkerchiefs I = iron-on patches J = jigsaw puzzles K = knitting needles & kitchen towels L = leather shoelaces M = marking pens & maternity panty hose N = night shirts O = oilcloth P = pants, pants fabric Q = quilt fabric R = rainwear & Redwing shoes S = suspenders, socks, shoes T = Tingley brand boots (since the 1900s) U = underwear & union suits V = Velcro & vests W = Woolrich throws and shirts X = extra-long suspenders Y = yarn Z = zippers

Y
outh programming tailored specifically to the female population has become a focal point for Lara Wheeler and the Middlebury Boys & Girls Club program. After Wheeler, the Director of the Middlebury Club, worked many hours forming the program, the “Girls in Focus” initiative is now rolling. The program is also launching at all Elkhart County Boys & Girls Clubs located in Elkhart, Nappanee and Goshen. The purpose of the program is to provide strength and support from role models and mentors to the young ladies of the Middlebury community.
“
A woman’s influence is far-reaching and multifaceted, so the more we can instill young ladies with life skills and core competencies, all the better for all of - Dawn Fisher society.
These young ladies toured Cook’s Bison Ranch in Wolcottville, where they fed Bison and had many hands-on lessons about the animals.
The club encourages the public to get involved to encourage and empower its female club members. Specific ways to get involved include:
”
• Provide a job shadowing opportunity • Be a guest speaker during a small group session • Supply hygiene and health products • Sponsor STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program materials
Cristina Klotz, Program Director at the Middlebury Boys & Girls Club, sees the program being lived out in the Middlebury community in special ways. “Through a number of small groups designed for girls, we hope to stretch their ideas of what girls can do and help them see they can do whatever they put their minds to,” she said.
Dawn Fisher, member of the Elkhart Boys & Girls Club board, believes “Girls in Focus” is a vital program for young girls. “Unfortunately for young ladies, there is a lack of highly visible national female role models,” said Fisher. “A program like ‘Girls in Focus’ can help fill the gap.”
This little lady is working through a “money matters” activity on the computer at the Boys & Girls Club as part of the “Money Smart Week” that took place last spring. Because Middlebury residents generously provided the funds at a previous Boys & Girls Club Auction, young ladies from the Club enjoyed a summer day on the lake.

MES Students Experience the Sights and Sounds of River Bend Park
This fall the first grade classes at Middlebury Elementary took a walking study trip to River Bend Park. The walk was led by Mr. Tom Enright, Middlebury Park and Recreation manager. On the walk, the first graders used their five senses to experience nature. They also compared and contrasted the sights, smells, and sounds of the different environments they passed through which were the playground, the neighborhood, the woods, and the river. It was a great learning trip and they even got to bring back a few treasures from the woods!
For The Birds
While in their weekly library visit, first, second and third grade students at Middlebury Elementary School enjoyed listening to “Night Tree” by Eve Bunting. “Night Tree” is a wonderful story about a family that visits their tree in a forest every year on Christmas Eve. The family makes the journey into the forest to decorate their tree with popcorn, apples, tangerines and sunflower balls as a gift for the animals of the forest. The family then sits near their tree and shares hot chocolate while admiring their tree and hoping they will see some of the forest animals come enjoy the gift. The story brings to life the true spirit of Christmas. And in that spirit, the students then made bird seed cakes. The cake went home with each student to hang outside on their own trees in hopes of feeding the birds around their home. It was sticky and messy, but lots of fun!

about 100, brought in 100 objects to compare length and did 100 exercises. It was a day filled with fun learning activities. Students are now looking forward to the day the leprechaun visits Jefferson Elementary and they try to beat him to the pot of gold by solving problems that will lead them to the gold.

Jefferson Elementary would like to thank JaNeille Clemens for serving 6 years as Jefferson’s school nurse; she will be missed. We are also excited to welcome Christine Khaoucha who will be taking her place as the school nurse.
There are a Hundred Ways to Celebrate the 100th Day of School
Jefferson Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school with a full day of activities. Students in one class decorated their shirts with 100 objects. There were shirts with 100 buttons, 100 letters, 100 googly eyes, 100 pieces of macaroni and 100 pom-pom balls. Another class dressed up like they were 100 years old. Students wrote about how they would use $100. Kindergarten students think $100 goes a long way. One student was going to put in a swimming pool with his $100. The students gathered in the cafeteria to eat a snack that contained 100 items. They collected 10 of each item so they could eat 100. The children enjoyed math games, read books 18 InMiddlebury Magazine | MARCH 2014

NORTHRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL:
NHS & NMS Students Find Success in Science Olympiad Science Olympiad has been changing the face of science education for 30 years. What began as a competition between science teachers and their students has blossomed into a national competition that competes across the country. The events range from building activities where participants create a vehicle that would have to perform certain tasks to creating a Rube Goldberg device. Other events include astronomy, anatomy, earth and science activities, and forensics. Almost every field of science is represented in Science Olympiad. The scoring system is simple: those who do the best in the competition get 1st place. Once all events have been completed, the rankings are added up and the lowest number wins the competition. Northridge High School currently has three teams and the middle school has two. Our teams have traveled to invitationals in Indiana and Michigan with the objective of competing against other schools. Northridge High School won the Kellogg Thornapple Invitational in Middleville, Michigan, on February 8th.
They competed against some of the top schools in Michigan. The teams travel to West Liberty Salem High school in Ohio on March 1 where some of the best teams in the nation will compete. Northridge High School and Northridge Middle school have already have had their regional tournament to qualify for state. The middle school came in second in the Goshen College Regional tournament earning a place at the state tournament at IU Bloomington on March 22. The high school competed at the IPFW Regional tournament and came in first place, also qualifying for the state tournament. Best of luck to all the students and coaches participating in upcoming Science Olympiad tournaments! You represent our school and community well! Community Collaboration Not a fan of history growing up, I’ve finally reached the age where I see the importance and the interest of delving into the past. Our town has quite a gem right across from Krider Gardens on Bristol Street/ CR 8, and I was fortunate enough to speak with the Director of the Middlebury Community Historical Museum, Mr. Richard Smith, who let me know what’s in the works for the museum’s celebratory year.
The museum is part of the Middlebury Community Enrichment Council together with Friends of the Library and Friends of the Park. “We’re enjoying a relationship, the three organizations together, to try to do some things that, on our own, we wouldn’t be able to do,” says Smith. The museum serves the three townships of Middlebury, York, and Jefferson and Smith says there are a number of things on the drawing board for expansion and growth in the next ten years.
A Decade of Exhibits
“Every year we change exhibits, and this year we decided we’re going to use bits and pieces of previoius exhibits we’ve done over the last ten years,” says Smith. “For example, we decided we would start with three of the four earliest ones: agriculture in this area, Middlebury and World War II, and an exhibit about schools and churches up to 1970.” The choice to stop at 1970 keeps the exhibit pre-Northridge/Heritage, and focuses on small, early, mostly one-room schools. “They won’t be as large as the orig-

Our Past and Our Future
Smith speaks lovingly of the museum and of history: “One of the important things about any community is understanding that we came from somewhere; there was a path and process and people who got us where we are today. Having that understanding gives us an idea of why we are who we are, but also a glimpse or vision of where we’re going in the future. For people who grew up here, it’s a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with memories and personal history, but it’s important to people who have moved here to learn about where they are now. Middlebury doesn’t have any World War II battlefields or world wonders, but we do have a very rich human history.” The museum’s hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm. You can find more information online at www.mchm.org or by calling 825-0978.

WeddingBells Northridge High School grad Emily Mishler was fortunate enough to work with Kleinfeld Manhattan as a Bridal Consultant intern beginning in mid-May last year. inMiddlebury Magazine’s writer, Stephanie Salisbury, interviewed her about her tremendous experience and this is what she had to say!
Stephanie Salisbury: Where is Kleinfeld Manhattan located? Emily Mishler: In the beautiful district of Chelsea in New York City. SS: Was it a pretty hands-on experience for you? EM: I was in the rooms during appointments – zipping, pinning, tucking, helping pull gowns and, ultimately, helping future brides say ‘yes’ to their dream dress! SS: How would you describe your internship? EM: An absolutely incredible, unforgettable experience! I was in the store five days per week. We began each day with a meeting that was exactly what you see at the beginning of each show of “Say Yes to the Dress”. We went over any VIP clients that had appointments scheduled that day. All of the managers laid out schedules for the consultants and gowns that were new to the store were featured and discussed. SS: And there was an ‘internal’ fashion show? EM: A new tradition that began was a fashion show featuring a different theme each week. Some of the themes that were featured were bestselling gowns, worst-selling gowns, newest gowns in store... the list goes on!
Let the Getaway be part of your special day.
SS: What was the best part of your time there? EM: Despite the excitement and sparkle of the largest bridal company in the world and being on national television, my favorite thing that I took away from the internship and the whole New York experience was the relationships I was able to build. These relationships stemmed from working with different employees every day at Kleinfeld Manhattan and also serving brides in finding their dream dress. The employees and guests of Kleinfeld Bridal came from such a diverse set of backgrounds and had an incredibly diverse skill set. It was incredible to see the unique qualities each individual brought to the organization. From the experience, I have made friendships and developed a professional network that I am certain will last for the rest of my life.

around TOWN | Town Manager Report
Public Works... What’s That?
By Mark Salee, Town Manager
“
Before I started working for a municipality, I’m not sure I could have told you what
‘public works’ meant. Most people could tell you what the streets department does: take care of the streets. But does a Public Works department...take care of public
”
works? Yes, they do! So what does that mean?
- Mark Salee
Well, the Middlebury Public Works Department consists of five employees that do the following for our community; • Streets and sidewalk inspection, maintenance, and repair • Snow removal, leaf pick-up, and street sweeping • Inspection, maintenance, and repair of water lines and sewer pipes • Fire hydrant maintenance, repair, and flushing • Street lamp maintenance and repair • Grave openings, closings, and cemetery grounds maintenance
In their spare time they put up the snowflakes on the light poles, maintain the Town Hall building and grounds, and manage the grass and brush drop-off site. These folks work at all hours and in all weather conditions. Water, wastewater, and people flow through our community due to the hard work and commitment of the Public Works Department employees. The Department Superintendent is Tim O’Dell. He is responsible for the planning and management of the department. Tim has worked in our Public Works Department for almost 17 years, the last four years as Superintendent. Tim is also the Sexton of Grace Lawn Cemetery. The Public Works Foreman is Josh Mosher, a crew leader on projects who provides direction to the staff when Tim is elsewhere. Josh has been with the department for nine years and is also a reserve police officer with the Town’s Police Department. The three labor positions in the department are filled by Alex Doberenz, Robert Miller, and Jeff Wodtkey. Alex worked for the department part-time in the summers and started full-time at the end of 2012. Robert has been with the department for just over a year. (You might know his father, the Deputy Chief of our Police Department, Kevin Miller.) The new employee in the department is Jeff Wodtkey, who began employment with the Town in February. Jeff is also a reserve officer with our Police Department. 26 InMiddlebury Magazine | MARCH 2014
The mission of the Public Works Department is to provide the Town of Middlebury with the most efficient and effective services possible to keep things flowing smoothly in our community. As always, if you find a bump in the road, such as a pothole, feel free to call the Town office to let us know. (And remember, the Public Works Department does not put bumps in the road, they fix the bumps!)
Freeze Warning Update
The Town issued a freeze warning for Town water customers on January 29th. All water customers should be trickling a small amount of water from a cold water faucet to help prevent freeze up of water service lines. You should trickle your water 24/7 until the Town rescinds the freeze warning, which could last another month. Make sure you call the Town office at 825-1499 to get on the list of customers that will receive adjustments on their water and sewer bills for trickling the water. If you have a frozen water line, you can call the Town Water Department at 825-1499 to help evaluate your situation or call a licensed plumber.
Fire Hydrants
If you have a fire hydrant near your property, most likely it is buried under snow. Please try to clear the snow off any hydrants so they are visible to the fire departments if they are needed.
You CAN Teach An Old Dog
Pets | LIVING well
New Tricks! By Stephanie J. Salisbury Photos by Kris Mueller
I’ll freely admit it – I’m a dog person! I have a big fluffy husky and a sleek little min-pin at home. As a part of my family, their care and behavior is very important to me.
It’s important to Steve Kasten, too. Owner of Contain-a-Pet by Kasten’s Dog Training in Bristol, he installs electronic fencing for your dog at your home and also offers a number of specialized training classes for you and your pet. “I had the desire to become a dealer for Contain-A-Pet, a company that is protecting thousands of pets, allowing them to play, and stay, safely in their yards,” says Kasten. “However, I realized I wanted more: I needed to become a dog trainer who installs electronic pet fencing. So, I went to a nationally renowned school for dog trainers to enhance my existing knowledge of dogs and their behaviors, where I received certification for obedience and behavior modification.” But, where to begin? “The first step is to schedule an evaluation. This is where I’ll come to your home and ask a lot of questions. I am also observing your dog and
how it reacts to a visitor and, more importantly, how you react to your dog reacting to a visitor. This breaks down the ‘purpose’ of training, to determine the problems and goals for your dog. The second step is to determine if private lessons or our residency program best fits your family’s needs. We also provide a puppy class which is designed to teach owners to better understand their puppy’s needs, establish effective communication, curb behavior problems, and show owners how to properly socialize their new puppy.”
Kasten provides some great tips for us as dog owners:
“Training your dog should be fun for both you and your dog.
Remember that leadership, discipline, and love are the recipe for success. We are striving for a relationship between you and your dog that is based on more than obedience. However, obedience is the foundation to clear, effective, and consistent lines of communication.
”
For more information, or to schedule an evaluation for your pet, call the office at 574-522-7050, or go online at www.kastensdogtraining.com.

fit Becky’s Boot Camp Our Fitness Interview: Gary Cripe
1. What did you do to get fit?
I currently attend the early morning “Roosters” class three days a week, working out with “Becky’s Boot Camp” for approximately the last 11-12 months.
2. How has it changed your life?
I had aches and pains due to being in the ‘obese’ weight classification. Now, there are no more weekly or monthly headaches, no sore feet, much less morning soreness, and so much more daily energy.
3. What would you recommend to others?
It is not just an exercise routine. It is a ‘lifestyle fitness’ program, like having a personal trainer and nutritionalist all in one package!
4. What keeps you working at your program to get fit?
At Becky’s Boot Camp, the workouts are fun and different each day, working different muscle groups. You have someone to help you through the weight plateaus and hold you accountable for off-day workouts, as well as to challenge you to maintain good, healthy eating habits.
5. What made you decide to get fit?
The motivation is having fewer aches and pains! The more I work out, the better I feel!
