On the front cover: The toadstools in the Krider World’s Fair Garden are a popular spot for photographers as well as painters. Middlebury artist Kathleen Wolfe was commissioned by Naomi and Michael Zook to paint the toadstool to commemorate their wedding when they were married in Krider Gardens. Read about Kathleen’s upcoming art show on page 20.

Toadstool Contest
Each month, starting with this issue, one of the ads will have this drawing of the toadstool hidden in it. When you find the toadstool, go to that business anytime before the end of that month and register to win a $25 gift certificate from that business! Photo by Gloria Salavarria
A garden inspiration, Long ago it came to me, A longing for unusual things, That would interest you and me. With a toadstool for an entrance, And a family of the same; Designed to draw attention And afford shelter from the rain. – Vernon H. Krider
Not Your Ordinary Toadstool… When deciding on an iconic image to use for our new hidden object contest, our magazine staff came up with the mushrooms at the Krider World’s Fair Gardens, only to find out that they’re actually known to the Krider family as ‘toadstools’! Regardless of the name, these treasures which are tucked away in a quiet, shaded garden hold special memories for many generations of locals and visitors. Rex Krider shared this poem from the 1935 Krider catalog written by Vernon H. Krider.

Eating Fresh and Local Food in Middlebury
by Dr. Carla Gull
We showed up at the old popcorn plant one Saturday morning after soccer practice. Each child had a few dollars to spend. While not much by many standards of today, it was enough for them to try something new at the farmers market. The sunny day and green trees and grass beckoned us to explore white and purple carrots, freshly-baked bread, and sweet-smelling herbs. That week, we tried a few new vegetables, thanks to easy access to local produce on a Saturday morning. Since my children had picked out these veggies, they were eager to try something they might not if I had done the picking. The Middlebury Farmers Market allows us to try new foods, meet farmers who grow our food, and interact with our community. While we had a full Saturday morning, we could easily stop by the market and quickly find produce we needed for the upcoming week. It was close, convenient, and a conscious choice to put some of our food dollars into the local economy.
It’s About Community
customers who want to invest their food dollars in the local economy while getting high quality produce, baked goods, fresh-cut flowers, specialty coffees, and handmade crafts.
Centrally Located
The location is ideal, with a large sycamore overhead, fruit trees nearby, and the Little Elkhart River close. It is conveniently located near Riverbend Park and the Pumpkinvine Trail. Vendors always have a voice in the operations. Lavern Graber, manager of the Middlebury Farmers Market, hopes to see more vendors this year. “If it’s a good day and people seem happy, it’s a success. If regular people come back with their Middlebury Farmers Market bag, we’re helping our community.
Co-owners of the facility Kent and Gaye Yoder mentioned one purpose of the Middlebury Farmers Market is ‘community’. It’s a place for local farmers to meet outside with the residents of Middlebury, catch up on their weeks, see their neighbors, and to purchase farm fresh, seasonal food. Co-owners Stu and Barb Holoway found healing in high quality, local food choices and wanted to share this opportunity with the community. The couples freely give this space weekly to connect people who want quality local food with farmers in our community who can provide that food. To continue operating, the market needs regular

Benefits of Buying Local Food at the Middlebury Farmers Market:
• The produce is just picked, having farm fresh flavor and optimal nutrition. • Buying local keeps hard-earned dollars within in our community. • Food will be freshest, as new foods are offered with the seasonal changes. • Save not only your own gas, but also gas that might have trucked or flown produce in from far away. It’s good for the environment. • Meeting local farmers allows you to ask questions about how food is grown. It puts a face behind the food. I often find new recipes and helpful tips for preparing produce from the vendors. • Try local varieties and specialty produce that might not be found in a supermarket. • It tastes delicious and helps us to eat more nutritiously! Think of juicy strawberries, freshly-picked green beans, crisp lettuce, and more all sold at the height of freshness and nutrition. Michael Pollan, author and advocate for local food, stated, “By shopping at a farmers market, you support local agriculture, which has a great many benefits. You keep farmers in your community. You keep land from being sprawled with houses and shopping centers. You have the experience of shopping in the farmers market, which is the new public square. You support a lot of values when you shop at the farmers market.”
Middlebury Farmers Market is a perfect place to respect our land and enjoy the bounty of the hard work of local farmers. Plus, it tastes good!

Parks Events by the Middlebury Park Board
The Festival Rose Returns to Krider Garden Three years ago, Rex Krider located a thornless ‘Festival’ rosebush, the variety that made Krider Nurseries famous. Since then, he has propagated the original rose into three plants! Now, after 50 years, a rose garden has been planted in the lower area of the Krider World’s Fair Garden. The three Festival roses have been planted, along with ten other varieties, in the new Krider Rose Garden located next to the waterfall pond. Rex said, “This is a really special day when the Festival rose is growing again in Krider World’s Fair Garden. Grandfather Vernon would be proud!” Thanks to Rex Krider for having the vision of a rose garden returning to the Krider World’s Fair Garden.
New Waterwheel on the Krider Garden Mill House The old wooden waterwheel on the mill house in Krider Garden has rotted away over the years and needed to be replaced. Dick Cook, President of the Friends of the Middlebury Parks, led a project to have an aluminum powder-coated wheel manufactured that will last for decades. Gary Lambright, owner of Silvercraft, L.L.C. of rural Middlebury, manufactured the wheel in the photo and donated one half of the $600+ cost. Thanks to Dick, Friends of the Middlebury Parks, and Silvercraft for this really big improvement!
The Festival rose is growing again in Krider World’s Fair Garden.

Summer of LoveWay By Stephanie J. Salisbury
F
or over four decades, LoveWay, Inc., has been the only organization of its kind in Elkhart County. Using horses as a therapeutic tool, they help people with a wide range of physical, emotional, and cognitive disabilities from youth into their elderly years to learn how to ride horses and, in the process, give them so much more than that. Having just finished up their yearly Derby Days fundraiser in May which included live and silent auctions, hors d’oeuvres, mock horse races, derby attire, and a ‘best hat’ contest at the Lerner Crystal Ballroom in Elkhart, LoveWay is gearing up for summer camps which are starting right now in June.
Summer Camp Volunteering Shelley Becker, Development Associate and Instructor, says, “We offer special needs camps and able body camps, and are full with campers for the summer… but in great need of volunteers! This is a great way to get your hands wet in volunteering. You only sign up for a week in the summer camps!” Over the 2014 year, LoveWay was able to serve over 300 riders with the help of over 140 volunteers who donated more than 6,500 hours of their time. Honey takes a break from her job at LoveWay to pose for a photo.
Help From Home If you aren’t able to sign up to help physically at the facility by volunteering, consider helping from home just by doing things you might normally do already like shopping at Kroger or Amazon. If you go to www.Kroger.com/ CommunityRewards you can find
Kyle (left) and Naomi (below) enjoy horseback riding at LoveWay.

Sign up to have LoveWay be your beneficiary at Smile. Amazon.com and it works the same way as your Kroger card – they will receive support each time you shop with Amazon!

Fathers and Daughters
Working Together …When it’s More than Just Business Last year, to celebrate Father’s Day, we featured local father-son businesses. Our readers enjoyed seeing the love and pride shared within a family business. That story brought forth a request to hear about local fatherdaughter businesses. We asked our readers to submit nominations and we are glad to share the following with you. For all the fathers, and those who provide the role of father to others, thanks for all you do and may you enjoy the gift of gratitude and reflections for this year’s Father’s Day!

In business since 1968 825.5861 • www.Jayco.com • www.Facebook.com/JaycoRVs What do you enjoy about working together? Derald: I’m second generation, and I hope to pass on the family values important to our business to the third generation like my parents did to me. It’s exciting to see the fresh, innovative ideas that Ashley and her generation have to offer our business in a changing market. Ashley: I enjoy working with my father because I not only learn from his vast knowledge of and experience in the industry, but also from his strong work ethic and focus on family values that the first generation founded Jayco on.

Kent: Having one of my kids choose to come back to Middlebury to work with me is something I never imagined would happen and, for me, it is a dream come true! Allison is a pleasure to work with and I feel very fortunate to have her here at my side! Allison: Being able to work with my dad every day has truly been a blessing. He has been one of the best mentors in my personal life and now my professional one. I could not have asked for a better teacher working just down the hall. My real estate career is booming and I can honestly say I could not have been so successful without my dad’s guidance. 14 inMiddlebury Magazine | June 2015
Middlebury Produce, Inc. In business since 1929 825.2177 • 11096 CR 16, Middlebury What do you enjoy about working together? Kent: I went to a conference once that said a family business is an oxymoron. You are either family or a business. There are times when the antics that go on in our office would make you think we are only family, but we are serious about our business. I often wonder what my grandfather, their great-grandfather, who started the business, would think if he could see us now. I’m proud of my girls. They make great business decisions because it’s more than a business. It’s family. Amy: The thing that I sincerely love most about family business is that my heritage is rooted here. When I look out my window every day and see my great-grandfather’s home, I wonder if he would be proud, or if he ever imagined that what he created would still be strong and that his business would be in its fourth generation (with the occasional fifth generation coming down to answer the phone). In addition to legacy, I appreciate the job security: the president is pretty fond of me! Tori: The thing I enjoy the most is carrying on the legacy. The whole family has pride in carrying on something that my great-grandfather Levi Bontreger and my grandfather Harold started.

Summer Brain Gain!
Boys & Girls Club summer program members hold a science experiment outdoors.
By Lindsay Saunders, Associate Executive Director
This summer, school is out but the Club is in! Children in the Boys & Girls Club summer program are keeping busy through fun programs that keep them learning all summer long. New Small Groups With programs like ‘Astronaut Camp’ and ‘Young Authors Club’, members have the opportunity to explore unique topics this season through hands-on activities with their peers. Summer program areas of focus include health and fitness, character development, literature, and the arts. “We offer more than 20 small group programs for our summer participants this year,” says Program Director Cristina Klotz. “From summer sports leagues to gardening, we really attempt to offer something for everyone.”
Some of the field trips Club kids are taking this summer include the Neil Armstrong Museum in Wapakoneta, Martin’s Culinary School in Granger, and the Fort Wayne Zoo.
The Boys & Girls Club is thankful for the support of the Middlebury community, businesses, and individual donors that help make its programs possible. Summer programming is offered to members for just $50 per summer, though the actual cost to provide summer programming is more than $400 per member. Our donors help fill that gap and, for that, we are grateful.
Exploring the World Outside Small group learning opportunities aren’t the only way Club kids are keeping their minds engaged this summer. Each summer program features a related field trip to help participants make real life connections to what they’re learning at Club. “We very much recognize the importance of learning excursions that allow our members to experience learning outside of the typical club or classroom environment,” says Klotz. “We’ve made a very intentional effort to ensure kids in our small group programs have the opportunity to participate in an off-site field trip related to what they are learning this summer.”
Every summer, more than 100 Club members participate in Boys & Girls Club summer programming featuring unique opportunities for summer learning and exploration.

The seniors this year were Emily Hughes and Mackenzie Martin (Number 1 doubles). The senior manager was Landon Arnold and the new coach was Evan Atkinson. Here’s an explanation of scoring (because it’s crazy confusing!) There are six games in a set, and varsity wins the match by winning the best 2/3 sets. You have to win by two games to win a set. The point system begins with Love (0), 15, 30, 40, game. (If both teams have 40 – called 40 all – you’re at deuce and you have to win by two). Believe it or not, the perfect day for a tennis match is slightly overcast, relatively cool, with no wind or rain.

Juniors and seniors at Northridge have the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience by attending the Elkhart Area Career Center. Twenty-five courses are offered, ranging from cosmetology to firefighting to photography. For forty years, the Career Center has been serving not only Northridge students, but students from all over the county.

The Northridge band program is highly reputable. However, the Northridge percussion program is a force to be reckoned with in itself. Mr. Detweiler has enabled the band program to dedicate special attention to developing percussionist skills. 26 inMiddlebury Magazine | June 2015

Perspectives
by Shae Dirks
Life at Northridge is all about perspective; whether you’re an athlete, an artist, or a band geek, how you see life at Northridge is all about how you perceive the world around you. Being part of a team or a club offers students here at Northridge a sanctuary and offers them a chance to express themselves. They are all a piece of the puzzle that makes us a whole and writes our story.
The Northridge Yearbook staff works year-round to capture and compose the parts of the whole that is Northridge High School. Although trying and stressful at times, the yearbook family is a close-knit group of students with a bond unfamiliar to those outside the yearbook room. Yearbooks can be picked up at 2015-2016 registration.

Northridge High School
NHS 2014-15 Highlights by Andrew Wood, Principal
A
s the 2014-2015 school year comes to a close, this is the perfect time to reflect
on the many rewarding moments we’ve had at Northridge High School as well as what the future holds for the upcoming school year. In some ways, our community has grown accustomed to the success of Northridge students, but I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everyone that our community and school are unique and our successes do not happen by chance. Due to the dedication of our teachers, directors, coaches, families, and, of course, our students, we continue to excel in the classroom, and on the stage, field, and courts. As Principal, I cannot thank you all enough! Allow me to highlight a few especially rewarding moments this past year. At our senior awards night, I had the pleasure of handing out thousands of dollars of scholarship money to our class of 2015. People ask me why I enjoy being a principal, and nights like this are what make it all worthwhile. Another special moment that helped reveal the character of our community early on in the year was our football team’s first sectional and regional title! I will never forget the tears of many of our parents as they watched their sons make Middlebury history on the gridiron. Of course, another appearance by our band at state as well as our show choirs’
continued success has made this year a thrill. Science Olympiad’s repeated high performance must be noted here as well. Next year looks as bright as one can expect. Our first Early College cohorts will be sophomores and they will start to gain college credit next year. Our IB program went through some modifications this past year, and I predict that we will see more of our students undertaking the rigors of pursuing an IB diploma. Blended learning is also coming to NHS. This is the evolution of our one-to-one technology initiative. It will allow us to do a better job of meeting every learner’s needs and to personalize learning for students. Lastly, we say goodbye to four legendary teachers: Shelby Weeks, Leonard Beechy, Sheri Woodruff, and Todd Woodworth. We have new teachers in place ready to join our staff next year, but let’s be honest… we will never be able to replace these giants in our school and community. We all hope the best for you all!
This article is brought to you by: Proud to be a part of our community’s past, present, and future since 1929. We encourage students to submit an application and ask us about our 4-year scholarship program for college or trade school.

A Message from Superintendent
Jane Allen As we end the 2014-15 school year, Middlebury Community Schools would like to thank all of the parents, patrons, and community members who have brightened the lives of all of the children in our school district. We are so very fortunate to live in a community where education is valued and supported so graciously. Our students have proven that academics are important in their lives and have shown success by providing us with test scores that helped us to achieve a district-wide ‘A’ rating. Our high school student successes are visible to the community in the number of Northridge High School graduates with high honors we have, our state qualifying choir, band, and athletic teams, as well as a Sectional championship in boys’ basketball and a firstever Regional Championship in football. Our Northridge Middle School staff and students achieved a national honor by being named a ‘School to Watch’. Our state and local legislators, along with our local school board members, congratulated them in an exciting and moving ceremony that celebrated their achievements. We know we have a wonderful middle school, so it is great that the rest of the nation knows it, too! Our school successes this year are measured in many ways, but especially by the positive attitudes of our students, their caring nature toward each other, and their commitment to having bully-free schools. When students feel safe in all ways, learning is fun and exciting. Our ventures into new territory for next year will include Early College High School, Project Lead the Way at the Middle School, and Blended Learning Classes that allow us to find students who want a non-traditional learning environment with support at both the middle and high school. The 21st century has barely just begun and we are moving forward with technological advances, yet preserving the student-to-teacher values that built our educational system. Middlebury Community Schools will continue to work hard to allow students to find success and pathways to their futures. We look forward to the continued parent, patron, and community support and feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful place to live and grow!

Northridge Middle School Blended Learning Lab at Northridge Middle School Northridge Middle School is committed to meet the unique learning needs and learning styles of all of our students. As a school continually working to utilize 21st century technology and to best serve the needs of our students, we are both excited and proud to announce a new addition to our school starting in the fall of 2015: our Blended Learning Lab! As the name implies, Blended Learning refers to the practice of using technology to deliver individualized curricular content or remediation to students blended in with the use of more traditional teaching practices. Northridge Middle School is already using a Blended Learning approach to serve the needs of our students. This happens within individual courses as well as special settings for those needing additional instruction and interventions. Our newly formed Blended Learning Lab will

take this to an entirely new level. As our world changes and the technological tools do as well, we believe it is our responsibility to provide to students and families options that may be less traditional and more individualized and flexible. We are very proud of our school, but recognize that, for some students and families, there are reasons they have sought out other educational settings. Whether it is home schooling or online virtual schools, we understand that families have left or considered leaving us to meet their educational needs in other ways. We believe that our Blended Learning Lab will be a very attractive program for these families. The NMS Blended Learning Lab will center on a comprehensive online curriculum, nearly identical to programs currently offered at other virtual schools. The advantage to considering our new setting is what we like to call ‘the best of both worlds’. Students will have an expected amount of time physically in our lab working on their virtual curriculum with the support of a certified teacher ‘live’ with them. The time of day in our building will be very flexible. They can then continue with the curriculum online from outside of physical school and continue to learn at their own individualized pace of instruction. Add to this offering the availability of our traditional courses/programs which can individually be added to our online virtual curriculum. Want to add Chinese or Spanish classes taught by a highly qualified instructor in person? Done! Want to add Instrumental Music or Vocal Music? PE? Language Arts? Math? Science? Social Studies? All possible and more! We imagine that no two students in the Blended Learning Lab will have identical schedules. There are so many choices for individualized needs to be met! If you are interested in learning more and/or would like to be added to our contact list, please contact Dr. Robby Goodman, Principal of Northridge Middle School, at either GoodmanR@mcsin-k12.org or 825.9531. A Special Breakfast… On May 8, HIS hosted a breakfast to thank all the volunteers and bus drivers who help make our school a better place!
Third Graders Visit Heritage On May 11, all third graders throughout the school district visited Heritage Intermediate School so they could learn what school will be like when they transition to their new building in the fall. Students were able to visit classrooms and were taken on a building tour with a fourth grade tour guide. After lunch in the cafeteria, the third graders were mixed into groups so they could meet students from other buildings. These groups participated in different get-toknow-you activities to start making new friends! The third graders were excited about their visit, and Heritage staff members are excited to welcome them back in the fall!
Students served breakfast to the HIS volunteers. Left to right: Tess Miller, Madison Kliewer, and Kamryn Miller.
Fifth graders performed a song for the volunteers and bus drivers.
Running Club Over 120 students participated in the new HIS Running Club which met on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Coaches Mrs. Meghan Miller and Mrs. Beth Hawn engaged the students in various running games and activities in order to get kids moving in fun and engaging ways! Each student in the club ran the mile run during the first Running Club session, and many improved their time when they ran it again during the last Running Club session. Thank you to Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Hawn and to all the parent volunteers for making our first year of Running Club a success! June 2015 | inMiddlebury

Middlebury Elementary SCHOOLS
What’s the Matter? That’s what second graders wondered as they traveled to the Science Central Museum in Fort Wayne. Students spent time exploring, testing, and discovering the physical sciences at the hands-on museum. There were puzzles to solve, tunnels to explore, wind storms or fog to create, robots to operate, gravity to test, water passageways to build, and so much more. A 30-minute demonstration called “What’s the Matter?” stirred the students’ curiosity and answered how liquids, solids, and gases change their state of matter. Students didn’t just observe; they put on goggles and gloves and helped with the experiments, too. It was a great day making science alive and real.
Chirp Chirps! Upon entering Middlebury Elementary School in the spring, you might hear some chirping sounds coming from Mr. Parks’ first grade classroom. As the school year winds down, his class finishes with their last animal study: baby chicks! In the month of May, they incubated eggs in their classroom incubator and patiently waited for the chicks to hatch. During incubation time, students used a modern version of an egg candler to view inside the egg and track the baby chicks’ growth. Students kept a journal of their observations. In preparation for the chicks’ arrival, the class studied animal habitats and created a special habitat for their newborn chicks. There was excitement in the classroom when students witnessed the chicks hatching! 34 inMiddlebury Magazine | June 2015
Spirit Bracelets for Riley’s
York Elementary
Mrs. Blotkamp’s third grade class at York Elementary had the unique opportunity to work with two representatives from Lake City Bank on a special project. The goal of the project was to have students experience the process of working together, developing a product, and impacting the community. They were able to sharpen their writing skills for a good cause by writing to community members asking for donations. The representatives from Lake City Bank used the donations to buy supplies needed to make spirit bracelets. The students worked together with partners to make several bracelets. They determined a price, and the bracelets are being sold at certain Northridge sports events. All of the money that is raised from the sales will be donated to Riley’s Hospital. What a great project!
Jefferson Elementary Jefferson Elementary had their first grade spring music program called “Welcome Spring” on Thursday, April 23rd. Rhyan Otto & Owen Kaehr are pictured in their chickadee costumes for the program. On Tuesday, April 28th, JES had their Kindergarten round-up. Pictured below are Eli Steiner and Jada Walker.
Information is submitted each month by the schools. If you have a story idea, please check with your school’s principal.

We fix shoulders.
When you consider all the work a shoulder is expected to do, it’s not surprising that it’s prone to problems. It’s a complex joint, and everyday use calls for the shoulder to move in just about every way possible. There’s lots of opportunity for failure of one type or another. Many of the shoulder conditions we treat at OSMC – dislocations, separations, tendon tears and fractures – frequently happen on the playing field or on the job. But other common problems come from general wear and tear related to aging – for example, rotator cuff problems brought on by tendinitis and bursitis. OSMC orthopedic specialists have extensive experience diagnosing and treating just about every type of shoulder condition. For some patients, simple activity change is the prescribed remedy. But for others, more extensive measures, even joint replacement surgery, is called for. So if your shoulder isn’t performing like it should, OSMC is here to fix it.
