Outdoor LIVING
Connecting to Nature
through a New Nature-Themed Playground Riverbend Park has a new nature-themed playground. There is quite a buzz of activity at the new play space. Sabrina Rios of Middlebury mentioned, “I really like it! It’s great for Middlebury!” Our family enjoys many aspects about it as well: •
Physical Challenges There are structures to climb, a variety of surfaces, and parts that move to increase the physical challenges. Climbing across the ‘fallen log’ that twists and turns or shimmying up the ‘tree house’ ladder gives opportunities to react in various situations.
Children work on balance and climbing in the playground. •
Variety of levels of play The park has a section designed just for the younger children with age appropriate activities. The older children also have a space that includes more adventure and higher structures. They enjoy the fish, dragonfly, river raft, and more. It’s a park for the whole family.
•
Many activities With beach volleyball, basketball courts, soccer goals, picnic tables, a pond, river, hiking trails nearby, and the enhanced playground, we can easily return for new experiences.
•
Nature-themed in a natural setting Small details make this a fun space to help connect children with nature. There is a magnifying glass embedded in the playground to examine leaves and other treasures children find. Another spot has ‘kid-powered’ nature sounds!
All the children at the park were engaged and having fun. Adults around me agreed that it is a nice addition to our community. Heather Ott of Middlebury added, “The park has been around since I was a kid, but it’s even nicer now. Kids can still enjoy nature.” What a great connection! The park encourages active play and enjoying the natural world around us. Riverbend Park is an excellent spot for fishing, exploring the river, taking a hike, playing outside, or geocaching. Take a few minutes to explore nature while you’re there! Dr. Carla Gull blogs at www.InsideOutsideMichiana.com. She is often seen with her four tag-along explorers in the greater Michiana area.

New Riverbend Playground makes a big splash!
Mini Golf at the Library Save the date for the 4th Annual Mini Golf at the Library on Saturday, November 7 from 9 am – 4 pm at the Middlebury Community Library.
After several delays in construction, the new playground at Riverbend Park is open to the public! The nature-inspired playground allows for imaginative play as kids ride the Little Elkhart River Raft, climb the fun sun fish, or walk across the ‘river’ on the Wacky Log. The entire playground is organized around the river that runs through it. The river is part of the spongy surfacing that is made from blue and black rubber, which was poured into place to create the fun aquatic atmosphere. Other fun attractions are a Dragonfly TeeterTotter, a nature scavenger hunt, an animal sound panel, crawl-through logs, a swing, and a 3-story tree fort with four fun slides. So far it appears that the new playground is making a big splash in Riverbend Park. Park usage has increased since the completion of the playground. The hope is that the ripples from the playground will not only bring people to the park, but bring more visitors to our town as well.
Come see the library transformed into an 18 hole mini golf course. This is a blast for the entire family! Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids 12 years and under. Proceeds go to the Middlebury Community Enrichment Council, comprised of the Friends of the Library, Friends of the Parks, and the Historical Museum.
Thank You Sonya! The Middlebury Parks Department would like to extend our thanks to Sonya Miller with Country Comfort Greenhouse. Sonya’s knowledge and generosity has been greatly appreciated during our many years of working together as she has been the Town’s main supplier for annual flowers. We wish Sonya all the best in her retirement.

Homemakers’ Club By Stephanie J. Salisbury
Where can you find a group that sews pillows for children at hospitals and women recovering from breast cancer, hosts bingo for senior citizens, and donates to Junior Miss, 4-H groups, and Dollars for Scholars? Right here at home – the Middlebury Homemakers’ Club! “Past President Evelyn Kozman knows from personal experience the difference a pillow can make for a child in need,” says Club President Jeannine Talley. Two of Evelyn’s grandchildren received pillows for different reasons, and she thought it would be a worthwhile cause for the Club to pursue. They started making teddy bears for Riley’s Children’s Hospital, but soon found a need locally.
Thank you, Evelyn, for your strong support as Past President, your enthusiasm, and your dedication. Your time and talents to our club will be missed! – Jeannine Talley, on Evelyn’s recent move to Florida “Riley sent us the puppy pillow patterns, and we used those,” says Evelyn. “We take them to IU Goshen and Elkhart ER, and state highway patrols sometimes keep one in the car in case
Puppy and heart pillows in different stages of preparation.
there is an accident, to comfort a child.” Jeannine adds that they also go to fire departments in Elkhart County and other local law enforcement agencies. 350 pillows a year is their goal, including heart pillows for women riding in a car after breast cancer surgery to cushion where the seatbelt covers. Since starting in 2002, they have completed over 4,000 puppy and heart pillows! Some ladies sew the pieces together and leave room for polyester stuffing, others stuff and hand-stitch seams, some put faces and decorations on the pillows. It is a ‘labor of love’, as described by Evelyn. Each pillow is made with care to brighten someone’s day. Middlebury Homemakers’ Club is celebrating its 78th year in Middlebury. They volunteer time at the 4-H fair in the Home and Family Arts Building, take educational and cultural trips to local museums and botanical gardens, host Bingo Nights at Crystal Valley Manor Retirement Home, and so much more. If you are interested in attending meetings, sewing, bonding, and having a wonderful time, contact Jeannine Talley at 370.7316 or Vice President Mary Leach at 825.2697. Members of the Middlebury Homemakers’ Club (L-R): Mary Leach, Glenna Kindy, Edna Hochestetler, Kay Kimmell, Gerry Warstler, Jeannine Talley, Diane Wilkey, and Evelyn Kozman.

Building Character One Child at a Time By Kevin Deary President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County
Abraham Lincoln said, “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.” Our character is much more than just what we try to display for others to see. It is who we are even when no one is watching. Good character is doing the right thing because it is the right thing to do.
Members of the Nappanee and Middlebury Clubs recently spent time at Clifty Falls State Park doing trail clean-up. Left to right: Taeler, Adolfo, Breana and Cris from Middlebury.
It is this kind of great character that we at the Boys & Girls Club of Middlebury work to instill in our members each day.
Character through Service
Through fun, life-changing programs like Youth of the Year, the Club encourages kids to lead, to succeed, and to inspire. These programs inspire leadership, service, academic excellence, and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle.
The Middlebury Club is one of four Clubs that are part of Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County. Recently, Adolfo Sigala, Middlebury’s Youth of the Year who went on to win Elkhart County Youth of the Year, accompanied youth from both the Middlebury and Nappanee Clubs on a service trip to southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. These teens performed service by doing trail clean-up and maintenance at Clifty Falls State Park near Madison, Indiana, and also served by volunteering at The Lord’s Kitchen in Louisville, Kentucky.
Healthy Lifestyles are Part of Strong Character, too It wasn’t all service and working though – these are teenagers after all. They got to have a fun day mountain biking at Mega Cavern in Louisville as well. Healthy recreation is part of a healthy lifestyle and building well-rounded young adults, too.
A group of Middlebury and Nappanee Club members volunteered at The Lord’s Kitchen in Louisville.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County is committed to helping develop strong character in our young people in every way possible!

L-R: Gary & Shayne Cripe and Michelle & Randy Grewe.
A Tale of Two Teenagers By Tyler Roebuck, NHS Graduate and Manchester University Student
Approximately 30 years ago, four students at Northridge High School went about their lives, living and doing as teenagers do. Today, these four parents again share struggles associated with teenage years: both families have sons trying to live their lives with disabilities. Randy and Michelle Grewe and Shayne and Gary Cripe have unknowingly paralleled each other since the 1980s. Now their sons Sam and Caleb, respectively, walk a parallel path, bringing family history full circle. The boys, despite their disabilities, have found a way to do what they love and do extremely well with it. Through ample personal discipline, both athletes find themselves competing with the U.S. Paralympics, and have registered records and placings with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
While many readers are familiar with both boys, a quick refresher of what makes them unique is in order. Sam was diagnosed in 2012 with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that took over his right leg. After chemo treatments and the removal of most of his leg, he now competes in a variety of sports with his assorted prosthetic legs. Caleb was born with Nager syndrome, a chromosomal disorder affecting the arms, hands, and face. Through occupational, physical, and other special therapies, Caleb can play just about any sport.

Sam
In school, Sam competed in basketball, lacrosse, and football but, since the spring of 2014, has found a new passion for track and field. When he started track and field, Sam tried a range of events. “He did well enough to compete, but his goal was to find a sport to go further in,” Michelle said. For Sam, that sport is the high jump. In high jump, he is more than just competitive: he is the best with his disability in the U.S. Sam holds the national high jump record for his classification, and was recently on the U.S. Paralympic team competing in the Pan-Am competitions. “When you consider a year ago when he did his first high jump, he didn’t know which side to approach from, and now he holds the American record, it’s pretty cool,” Michelle said.
Sam’s medals from the U.S. Paralympics Track & Field National Championships in Minnesota this past June.
A majority of his competition occurs through an organization called the Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association, or GLASA. GLASA is a competitive sports group located in the greater Chicago area. As a part of the team, Sam is one of about 200 disabled athletes looking to compete on a fair level. “It’s almost like there are no excuses,” Sam said. “It’s a competitive but friendly atmosphere.” GLASA serves as a stepping-stone to the IPC, and IPC competitions sometimes require long-distance travel. “In high school, you think South Bend is far, but we have had to go as far as Arizona and the Netherlands,” Michelle said. Sam shown playing Lacrosse for the Northridge High School team. Sam will be focusing on track and field events this spring at Northridge. 14 inMiddlebury Magazine | September 2015

Parapan Am Photos: Russ Draper
Sam jumped 1.6 meters (5’ 3”) to secure 4th place in the high jump competition in the 2015 Parapan Am Games. These games included 1,600 athletes from 28 countries. We were so fortunate to have Middlebury’s own Russ Draper take photos at the Toronto event. As you can see from his photo, Russ had a blast photographing not only Sam’s competition, but also every event he could attend while there. Russ said that this opportunity was something he is delighted to cross off his bucket list! Thanks, Russ, for all the great photos you provide for inMiddlebury Magazine and for the community!
“I had an amazing experience at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto this August. I met and competed with the best athletes in North and South America. My next goals are to be invited to the International Paralympic Association’s Athletic World Championships in Doha, Qatar this fall, and maybe even the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro next summer.” –Sam Grewe

Caleb
While Sam is setting records in the air, Caleb dominates the international pool. His involvement with the NASA swim program, along with assistance and coaching from Coach Keller of Northridge High School, have gained him great recognition. Caleb’s global competitions start at Indiana Swim, an organization that reports directly to U.S. Swim who, in turn, communicates with the IPC. Hard work and a great deal of training have allowed Caleb, despite his underdeveloped arms, to place as high as second in the world in certain strokes. His competition and great successes in the pool have granted him quite the local status. As Caleb likes to say, “I’m famous.” The shared link between these teenage athletes mirrors the common ground that existed between the Cripes and Grewes. In the 1980s, each of the parents were at Northridge High School. Gary and Randy were neighbors, carpooling to football practice. As Caleb was growing up, Randy’s parents welcomed him to swim in their pool, as they were neighbors. Gary finds this connection beneficial. “The commonality we share with them, knowing that we all have gone through things together, is nice,” he said. “It’s nice to have someone with whom we can relate and be encouraging.”
Caleb showing one of his 1st place swimming awards.
Both families express their greatest gratitude for the Middlebury community and their continued support and care for these very special teenagers.

Gaining Momentum
Story by Ashlynne Weesner Photos: Russ Draper
Boys Lacrosse The boy’s lacrosse program has come a long way since they first started during the 2012-2013 school year with only sixteen players as a junior varsity team. Over the years, they have gathered many newcomers. The number of guys wanting to play grew and grew, and this past year they had a total of 60 players between both junior varsity teams and the varsity team!
Girls Lacrosse Girls lacrosse was introduced just this school year as a spring club sport. This being a new program for Northridge, coaches Brett Hoover, Mike Kelley, and Darin Bemiller weren’t sure how many girls would sign up and if they would get enough players for a team. Sure enough, they did, and it went better than anyone had anticipated. They gathered a group of 23 devoted girls ready for a challenge! The girls played tough and ended the season on a great note being undefeated.

Northridge High School
Off to a Fresh Start To say this summer went quickly would be an understatement, but we are thrilled to be starting another school year here at NHS! In early August, we had over 1,300 students register for the new school year, our largest enrollment yet! A huge ‘thank you’ to our students, parents, teachers and staff, and the many volunteers who helped distribute laptops, student schedules, school pictures, student IDs, and yearbooks in addition to collecting the necessary information to help make our job possible for the kids of this great community. Registration could not have happened without the assistance and dedication of our wonderful staff. On August 12th, we officially welcomed Northridge High School students back and we are off to a great start. In addition to the many freshman and new students, we also have seven new teachers! Please welcome them to the Middlebury community if you get the chance. The fall athletic seasons are in full swing and our first home football game was Friday, August 28th against Michigan City. Our Music Department is busy preparing for the marching band and choral competitions that are right around the corner, and many of the student clubs, organizations, and activities have picked up right where they left off in June. This year we are planning to increase our social media presence on Facebook and Twitter. Like us on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/NHSRaiders or follow us on Twitter at @NHSGoRaiders. You can also download the SchoolWay App at the App Store, Android Play Store, or by visiting www.MySchoolWay.com/Middlebury to get the latest information from Northridge High School. NHS is a busy place this time of year and we look forward to seeing you at one of the many events taking place in the coming months. Welcome back!

We fix shoulders.
When you consider all the work a shoulder is expected to do, it’s not surprising that it’s prone to problems. It’s a complex joint, and everyday use calls for the shoulder to move in just about every way possible. There’s lots of opportunity for failure of one type or another. Many of the shoulder conditions we treat at OSMC – dislocations, separations, tendon tears and fractures – frequently happen on the playing field or on the job. But other common problems come from general wear and tear related to aging – for example, rotator cuff problems brought on by tendinitis and bursitis. OSMC orthopedic specialists have extensive experience diagnosing and treating just about every type of shoulder condition. For some patients, simple activity change is the prescribed remedy. But for others, more extensive measures, even joint replacement surgery, is called for. So if your shoulder isn’t performing like it should, OSMC is here to fix it.
