Berry Picking! By Dr. Carla Gull

It’s the height of berry season! Strawberries recently ended and blueberries are exploding everywhere. I often take the boys to pick berries. We enjoy the time outside and the fruits of our efforts. We find it’s best to go early in the morning when it is cooler, there are fewer people, and the selection is good. We look for the biggest, brightest, best berry, whether it is a strawberry or a blueberry, picking all in each section as we go. Here are a few tips I share with my boys when picking berries: •  Look for the best red strawberries or very blue blueberries. Beware of white or mushy spots. •  Twist and pull to take it off the plant. •  Check the berry before picking it. •  Practice having mom or dad check the first few times before picking the berry. •  Gently pull the plants to the side to find any good straggling strawberries or do a visual on the blueberry bush. We also enjoy our local wild berries. We love mulberries, blackberries, and black raspberries with special

places to pick them all. The berries often go from the tree or bush straight into our mouths as we traipse back and forth between houses. Richard Yoder from The Middleberry Patch, two miles east of Middlebury on County Road 16, shared a few tips for picking berries. He said, “Come early for the best selection. Be easy on the plants, picking them clean as you go.” His family is growing an ever-bearing strawberry that will have another crop in August or September, which is unique and welcomed for local strawberry enthusiasts. Watch for a sign at his road to let customers know when berries are ready. The berries are planted in a weed-free environment with no harmful chemicals used. He takes great care and pride in providing a u-pick strawberry patch to the Middlebury community and will have blackberries ready this next year. He also mentioned that first-time customers get a scoop of homemade ice cream while supplies last. It sounds delicious! What tips do you have for berry picking? How do you like to eat your berries?

Scott Nielsen in 2001

Providing Scholarships for Local High School Seniors By Stephanie J. Salisbury

R

oger and Sandi Nielsen have been Middlebury residents since 1992, their blended family including children Steve, Kimberly, Scott, Randy, and Allen. “Scott was our rebel!” says Sandi. He worked at a speed shop in Goshen, then Max Myers Motors, where he was working at the time of his death while out for an evening ride. At that time, Scott was commander of the Sons of the American Legion. “Scott loved motorcycles and riding, and participated in many rides and benefits,” recalls his mother. “The outpouring of love and compassion from the community and friends was overwhelming.” Wanting to give back, the family sold Scott’s fully-restored 1965 Mustang and earmarked the proceeds for a scholarship in his name. Scott’s uncle Paul bought and resold the car, and donated that money, too – starting the scholarship fund at $29,000! The American Legion decided to have a ride and thought the scholarship would be a good cause. Each year, it is given to a Northridge or Career Center senior who will be attending a technical school with special emphasis on mechanics. For the past twelve years, numerous scholarships have been given each year between $750 and $3000 each. The Nielsens say, “Without the dedicated commitment of the American Legion Riders from post 210 and many others, we would not be able to continue with this.” Donations of products and money have been extremely helpful from community businesses, too, and 400 shirts are donated each year from Hoosier Harley Davidson of Elkhart for the ride participants. In 2003, when the ride started, there were fewer

Sandi says, “We would like to thank everyone for their devotion to this ride. Without the unselfish giving of time and energies, it would be impossible to sustain this. One of our greatest rewards is hearing from a past recipient who has gone on and become successful because of our help.” This year’s ‘Scotty’s Ride’ was on June 14th. LIVING

Amberwood Terrace Chiropractic A Message from Dr. Derrick Hendricks An Elkhart County native, Dr. Hendricks has served our community since 1993. It is his life’s passion to educate every patient on the harmful effects of interferences in the nervous system called ‘vertebral subluxations’. Proper spinal care is essential to everyone’s health. It takes a properly functioning nervous system to ensure your body functions at its peak. Think about a dimmer switch: you can dim the light and it still works, but not at 100%. This is what happens in your body when a subluxation is present. We are experts in finding and correcting this problem. Often, a patient comes into our office and sees an infant or a child being adjusted. Their initial comment is, “I didn’t know you treated children.” However, the spine is subjected to problems

from birth. Think about the pressure exerted on the infant’s spine during labor and the pull on the infant’s head during normal, uncomplicated childbirth. Many childhood afflictions like ear infections, colic, sleep and eating disturbances (to mention a few) could be avoided if proper chiropractic care was delivered to the infant. Our office is fully committed to our mission of helping as many people as we possibly can – especially children!

Making the Most of Murals By Lindsay Saunders, Associate Executive Director

If  you happen to visit

Chain Reaction Bike Shop in  Goshen this summer, you might notice something different about the interior walls of the store. Once white in color, the bike shop walls now shine brightly with vibrant neon murals of bike wheels, chains, and gears. “Who is responsible for this AMAZING work?” you might wonder. It’s a group of young artists from the Middlebury Boys & Girls Club!

The Challenge In late spring, Boys & Girls Club Art Instructor Ellen Schlabach was presented with the opportunity to make over the interior of the shop with murals. Ellen knew she would embrace this challenge, but that she wouldn’t do it alone. “I saw this as a real opportunity for our Club’s young artists to share their art with the community in a very unique way,” says Schlabach. “The Club has never had a mural painting program before, so I was hoping to use this experience to introduce the kids to something completely new.”

Getting Started For three months, Ellen and her team of Boys & Girls Club kids visited the bike shop weekly to plan, design, and paint the murals.

ABOVE: NHS sophomore Gabe Lenguel works on this mural which he planned, designed, and painted by himself. LEFT: Second-grader Julia Rains reaches high to paint the team’s third mural inspired by Andy Warhol. BELOW: Club Members Aubrey Michen and Ethan Ireland pose with Art Instructor Ellen Schlabach under their new mural at Chain Reaction Bike Shop.

“We used stencils to help make the designs,” says eight-yearold Aubrey Michen, one of the artists on the team. In total, the group painted three murals, two in the style of artist Andy Warhol. This summer, Schlabach will return to the store to paint murals on the exterior walls.

Lessons Learned Schlabach and the Club kids are proud of what they accomplished at Chain Reaction and of what they learned! “Teamwork is key,” says Ethan Ireland, a fifth-grade member of the mural team. “It was fun to work with others – some you know and some you don’t know – to come up with a design and paint. There were some difficulties and mistakes, but we worked together to fix them.”

Local Leaders at the

4-H Fair

Photo: Kris Mueller

By Melissa Troyer

Middlebury is well-represented once again at this year’s Elkhart County 4-H Fair, with Rich Utley serving as the 2015 Fair President and Bob and Nancy Hawkins as the Parade Marshals.

When asked about his experience as 2015 Fair President, Rich Utley shared, “It’s been a busy time, but I’m having fun!”

This year’s nine-day fair runs July 24 through August 1. The fair’s theme, Planning Toward a Bright Future, and the 2015 logo were both developed by Rich Utley. Rich explains beautifully what it means. “My logo shows 4-H at the center of a bright beginning to a new day, and includes a farm and urban skyline to show that 4-H isn’t limited to one lifestyle. The silhouette of a girl sitting on a fence represents 4-H not being limited to boys, it’s also open to young ladies. Planning Toward a Bright Future not only means the future growth of Elkhart County Fairgrounds, but applies to the training, experience, and character qualities that are gained through 4-H involvement for our youth today. The logo also points out that I spent many years in production planning, and that we have a daughter that was involved in Poultry [Club] and, now, a granddaughter

actively involved in many different 4-H projects and activities.” Another honor Rich had this year was selecting the Parade Marshals, Bob and Nancy Hawkins. Middlebury residents and owners of Hawkins Water Tech, they married in 1956 and raised three daughters and one son who were ten-year 4-Hers. They have ten grandchildren who have participated in 4-H. “These two people have dedicated their lives to serving and helping others and rightfully deserve to be honored for the gifts they bring to this community and the Elkhart County 4-H Fair. They stand as an example for all of us to follow,” said Utley.

Remember When - Old Timers Remember When Middlebury ‘Old Timers’ Story and Photos by Gloria Salavarria

The Old Timers are seniors who grew up in Middlebury who come together each year to share their stories of what life was like in Middlebury once upon a time. This is now their 21st year. Video recordings of their stories are available at the Middlebury Community Public Library.

Palm Sunday Tornadoes Fifty years have gone by since the Palm Sunday tornadoes struck Elkhart and LaGrange counties and yet there still was pain in the voices of the survivors who stood up and shared their stories at this year’s Middlebury Old Timers meeting. “It was April 11, 1965,” said Eugene Bontrager, who was a second-year college student home for spring break. “Most of us remember exactly where we were, what we were doing.” Here are some of the stories which were shared by those who undoubtedly remember that day all too clearly.

A record 116 folks showed up at the annual Old Timers meeting to hear and share stories of Middlebury’s past. This year being the 50th anniversary of the Palm Sunday tornadoes disaster brought strong reaction from the audience as folks stood up and told of how this event affected their lives and their families. Alvin Miller, who was 25 at the time, said that the devastation in the aftermath of the Palm Sunday storm was so bad that people were saying that it would take years to rebuild, but he got a phone call from folks in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who offered to bring work crews to help rebuild if places could be found for them to stay and to be fed.

“One guy had a carpentry crew of about 75 people,” said Miller. “The other one had a carpentry crew of about 60 people…they stayed and worked for 14 weeks.”

Guest speaker Eugene Bontrager set the tone for the 21st Middlebury Old Timers Meeting by discussing the tornado disaster that occurred in this area 50 years ago. Stories of courage and loss told by the survivors revealed just how fresh this disaster was in the minds and hearts of this community.

18  inMiddlebury Magazine  |  JuLY 2015

The storm also caused wonders such as one of Fanny Weirich’s family’s canceled checks ending up 200 miles away in a suburb of Detroit.

Sue Pletcher Hout rose to tell that it still bothers her to this day that she didn’t call a local radio station to report her tornado sighting. “Today, you know if a tornado is coming days before it comes,” said Hout who learned at the Old Timers meeting that she was not alone. Others also stood in shock at the sight of the tornadoes and didn’t call. Darien Ditmars told of the terror that he and his family felt when they were trapped inside their car while being pelted by huge hail stones. While his kids were screaming, he turned their car around and fled home. Several days later, he rallied his local scout troop to help with the clean-up. He set the boys to work in a field where they found more than seven calves that had been killed by the storm. “You had to explain to them how this has happened,” Ditmars said about helping the boys deal with the gruesome sight. Edna Hochstetler saw two tornadoes coming and yet she still managed to look up at the clouds in wonder. “It looked like fingers just floating – a lot of small fingers,” Hochstetler said. Her husband Chris persisted in watching those fingers, one of which dropped down on Country Road 46 and took out three barns.

The following day, John Yoder, who was 9 years old, was sitting on a pile of wood when a helicopter came by and dipped down. He waved at the guy on the inside, and that guy waved back. He later learned that the guy in the helicopter was President Johnson. He also remembered his dad being called to shoot cattle injured by the storm – an act that distressed his dad greatly.

The Palm Sunday tornadoes left a path of devastation through six states. Forty-seven tornadoes were sighted, of which 22 were rated F4s with wind speeds up to 260 mph. There were 271 people killed – 137 in Indiana and 67 in Elkhart and LaGrange counties. Overall, more than 1,000 volunteers came to help both in the clean-up and the rebuilding. The Old Timers meeting is open to everyone and is held each year on the second Tuesday in May at the Middlebury Town Hall. JuLY 2015  |  inMiddlebury

Class of 2015!

Mr. Andrew Wood with Hunter Hardin

Story by Kasey Kirchner, Photos by Russ Draper

Graduation is always a time of bittersweet feelings, funny memories, and excitement for the future. The Northridge High School Class of 2015 consisted of just under 300 seniors, with Shae Lynn Dirks as their student speaker who gave a compelling commencement address. Faculty speaker Todd Woodworth, retiree after 37 years, enlightened the audience and graduates on his sincere belief in ‘treehouse building’: spending one’s time and energy on the more important things in life. The band performed Scarborough Fair by Andrew Boysen and the choir sang I Believe, arranged by Mac Huff. All in all, it was a wonderful and memorable ceremony, highlighting the accomplishments and rewarding the success of the Class of 2015. Diplomas were given to amazing individuals, including an athlete who holds three sectional titles for the year, two young women from Spain and the Netherlands, a self-published author, a marine, and many more incredible young minds with strikingly bright futures. After the tassels were turned, the accomplished and talented graduates not only walked out of the gym, they took the first few steps towards the rest of their lives.

We fix shoulders.

When you consider all the work a shoulder is expected to do, it’s not surprising that it’s prone to problems. It’s a complex joint, and everyday use calls for the shoulder to move in just about every way possible. There’s lots of opportunity for failure of one type or another. Many of the shoulder conditions we treat at OSMC – dislocations, separations, tendon tears and fractures – frequently happen on the playing field or on the job. But other common problems come from general wear and tear related to aging – for example, rotator cuff problems brought on by tendinitis and bursitis. OSMC orthopedic specialists have extensive experience diagnosing and treating just about every type of shoulder condition. For some patients, simple activity change is the prescribed remedy. But for others, more extensive measures, even joint replacement surgery, is called for. So if your shoulder isn’t performing like it should, OSMC is here to fix it.
