Signs your pet should see a vet Pets are valued members of the family, and pet owners work hard to provide safe, secure and healthy living situations for their companion animals. A good diet and regular exercise are essential to pet health, and pets also benefit from a strong relationship with their veterinarian. Routine vet visits are necessary to maintain pet health, but at times pet owners may have to call the vet when something is awry. Animals are very good at hiding symptoms that may indicate they are not feeling well. Pet owners must learn to recognize certain subtleties that may indicate a dog or cat needs to visit the vet. Here are some symptoms that may indicate it's time to schedule a vet visit. · Restlessness: Animals that are jumpy or can't seem to get comfortable may be experiencing pain or anxiety. If your typically docile kitty is now pacing the floors instead of relaxing, it may mean something is bothering her. · Physical appearance: Changes in posture or other physical changes may indicate something is wrong with your pet. Does he seem to be moving slower than usual or look pale? Is the pet avoiding eye contact? Gauntness or excessive weight gain may be linked to certain conditions as well. · More or less vocal: Some

dogs and cats are the strong, silent types, while others like to vocalize. If you notice changes in your pet's vocalization, he or she may not be feeling well and trying to tell you. · Cold signs: Dogs and cats can suffer the common cold just like humans, but the viruses are different. Symptoms are quite similar to what people experience, including runny nose, watery eyes, coughing, and sneezing. If symptoms last more than a week, book an appointment with the vet. · Dietary changes: Many pet owners learn something is amiss when their pets exhibit changes in their eating habits. Food may suddenly sit uneaten in bowls. Dogs or cats may begin to drink a lot of water or leave the bowl untouched. If these changes persist, contact your vet. · Digestive issues: Digestive issues also may indicate a problem. Be aware if pets

are not eliminating as they normally do. Cats may not be using the litter box, or dogs may be unable to hold their waste until they are outdoors. Frequent accidents or bouts of vomiting may not be indicative of a behavior problem, but rather a symptom of an illness. · Fatigue: Dogs and cats certainly do their share of napping during the day and night. But excessive napping may be a sign of something bigger. Illnesses can cause fatigue in animals, and sleeping may be their way to banish pain. While symptoms such as bleeding, limping or rising temperatures are clear indicators that things are awry, many pets only experience subtle symptoms when they begin to feel sick. Pet owners should keep an eye out for such issues to ensure their pet is not suffering in silence.

Enjoy a frugal fall road trip Road trips are a staple of autumn for many motorists. Fall foliage and moderate temperatures make the months of September and October ideal months to hit the open road for weekend getaways. Fall road trips rarely take drivers too far away from home, but traveling can still be costly. Fortunately, there are many ways to make road trips more affordable without sacrificing

e l a S e r Ti FALL

fun. · Explore alternatives to more traditional lodging. If your road trip includes an overnight stay, consider alternatives to traditional lodging. Hotels might stretch your budget, but depending on where you plan to go, you might have some less traditional alternatives. Airbnb.com allows homeowners and even some apartment dwellers to rent their homes and apartments

to travelers, and these listings may pale in comparison to rates offered by nearby hotels. If weather permits, look for local campsites and spend your nights sleeping outdoors under the autumn stars. If you prefer hotels, look for deals on sites like Priceline.com or Hotwire.com, which may offer heavy discounts on rooms. · Take steps to conserve fuel. Lodging might prove your biggest expense on a fall road trip, but fuel likely won't be too far behind. Drivers can cut fuel costs in several ways. Before beginning your trip, take your car in for a tuneup so any issues that might affect fuel efficiency are addressed before you hit

the open road. Poorly inflated tires force the engine to work harder and burn more fuel, so make sure tire pressure matches the levels recommended in your owner's manual before embarking on your trip and even along the way if you feel your car is not running as smoothly as it could be. Another way to conserve fuel is to remove excess items from the trunk. If you don't plan to hit the links on your trip, leave your golf clubs at home. · Plot your route. Spontaneity may make fall road trips more fun, but drivers looking to save money should plot their routes in advance so they can avoid potentially costly problems like detours or road

Dansville - Wayland PennySaver

work that can waste fuel and lead to hours sitting in traffic. Use a GPS device during your trip so you can be alerted to any unexpected developments that might cost you time and money. Plotting your route in advance also allows you to find affordable dining and lodging options and choose roads that don't require drivers to pay tolls. · Invite some friends

and family along. Inviting friends and family on a weekend getaway can make the trip more fun and more affordable. If you have room in the car, inviting friends along allows you to split fuel costs, and you may even save on lodging if you find a hotel that won't charge for extra guests in the room. Friends and family also can help split the cost of supplies.

· Bring your own food. Food is another big expense road trippers must account for. But you can save money on food by bringing your own meals along on the trip. Prepare some sandwiches the morning that you leave and keep them fresh in a cooler so you don't have to pay for lunch. In addition, pack some snacks so you and your passengers can quickly and affordably

quell any hunger pangs that arise while you're on the road. If you plan to stay in a place with its own kitchen, cook your own dinners so you don't have to spend money dining out. Road trips are a staple of autumn, when drivers can still enjoy the open road without breaking the bank.

ook! Right at this page! They’re super. They’re heroes. They’re… SUPERHEROES!

Superhero history People have enjoyed stories of brave people who could do extraordinary things for many years. But only since the 1930s have superheroes resembled what we know today. The Green Hornet debuted as a radio character in 1936. Others started out in comic books, such as Superman in 1938 and Batman in 1939. But in the early days, not all superheroes were the capewearing, flying characters we often think of. Tarzan the Apeman, the son of a British lord and lady who was raised by apes in Africa, was thought of as a superhero. Even the Lone Ranger, a masked man who fought outlaws in the Old West, was considered one.

Many superheroes are normal people who have something strange happen that gives them powers. Captain America started out as plain old Steve Rogers, who wanted to fight in a war and was given an experimental drug that made him ultra-strong. Bruce Banner was completely ordinary until absorbing radiation from a bomb and becoming The Hulk. Others remain normal people. Without his iron suit and gadgets,

ACTIVITY

Iron Man is just a very smart guy who can invent things. Then, there are those who are never people. Even though Superman looks like a handsome earthling, he began as Kal-El, sent to Earth by his parents when his home planet of Krypton was destroyed. Most superheroes have a secret identity — even their best friends don’t know about their powers. So they wear masks and other costumes when they fight crime. Also, even though some aren’t good all the time, they fight on the side of good. Most importantly, superheroes typically fight supervillains, bad guys who also have interesting histories and super powers.

Superheroines Of course, not all superheroes are boys and men. The X-Men have several female members, such as Rogue, Storm and Jean Grey. Iron Man’s assistant, Pepper Potts, has her own suit of armor and is called Rescue. And Wonder Woman, an Amazon warrior princess who carries a lasso that forces people to tell the truth, can go head-to-head with the best of them, even fighting Superman sometimes.

Find these superheroes: Batman Captain (America) Daredevil Flash Iron Man Spider-Man Superman Thor Wolverine Wonder (Woman)

Follow these steps to draw your own superhero.

1. Choose a name. Batman looks sort of like a bat. Your superhero’s name could mean a lot to what he or she looks like. 2. Choose your superhero’s powers. Is he or she from another planet, like Superman? Or did something happen to a human to create super powers, like it did to Spider-Man? 3. The first two questions should give you an idea of what your superhero looks like and what he or she will wear. Try drawing the body and clothes first, then color in the detail.

Autumn yard work gone 'green' Autumn marks the time to transition from the hot days of summer to the chilly weather of winter. As people remove sweaters and long pants from storage, cleaning up their yards also may be on their minds. Fall is a season of beautiful foliage, but once that magical color show is over, thousands of leaves have fallen to the ground, necessitating a few weekends' worth of yard work.

Some homeowners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly ways to handle autumn yard work, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly ways to tackle such tasks. Leaves The tallest task with regard to fall yard work is collecting the leaves that fall to the ground. Some homeowners prefer to wait until all of the leaves have fallen before starting the collection process,

while others handle the task in stages to make it more manageable. Regardless of your timing, skip the noisy gas- or electric-powered leaf blower in favor of a reliable rake. Raking not only collects the leaves but also helps men and women burn calories while ensuring they are not creating any noise or air pollution. Invest in a durable, ergonomic rake to get the job done quickly and

without injury. Innovators are constantly reinventing the rake, and now there are designs that do not trap leaves, saving homeowners from the timeconsuming tasks of cleaning the rake's teeth. Rake on a calm day so the wind isn't thwarting your efforts. When it comes time to bag the leaves, use biodegradable paper bags or look for mesh-like bags that are made from corn-

starch. These are more eco-friendly than plastic bags, which can take much longer to decompose. You won't need to dispose of all the leaves you collect. Shred some to use as mulch, which can prevent soil erosion during the winter. Some leaves can be added to compost piles or used as a soil ammendment in planting beds. Compost Autumn is an ideal time of year to get started on building a compost bin. Take advantage of the cooler temperatures to make outdoor work more comfortable. According to the Audubon Society, American yards generate two tons of clippings each year. A lot of that waste ends up

being bagged and thrown away. Instead of producing waste, compost leaves and grass trimmings to use as valuable fertilizer come the spring planting season. When choosing a location for your compost bins, be sure to place them a good distance away from the house but near enough to garden beds. Most yard waste and food debris can be added to the compost pile. Just avoid animal products, which can produce harmful bacteria. Keep the compost damp and turn it periodically to facilitate the decomposition process. Soak finished compost in water to create "compost tea." This liquid mixture can be sprayed on lawns in the fall to give the yard a nutrient boost that

promotes healthy regrowth when the warmer weather returns. Eco-friendly lawn care can save energy, money and natural resources.

Tips for buying merchandise at auctions Cost-conscious shoppers may want to consider auctions before making their next big-ticket purchases. The opportunities for deep discounts abound at auctions, where shoppers can find all types of products, homes, cars and furniture. According to a comprehensive study commissioned by the National Auctioneers Association, more than half of the U.S. population has attended a live auction. Around 83 percent of respondents said auctions are an exciting way to get good deals. Not only can auctions be a way to get great value on items, but also they can be entertaining to attend. Three-quarters of auction attendees bring the entire family along. Although auctions offer a vast array of merchandise for sale, men and women attending an auction should do their homework before making any bids. Whether you're bidding on seized property, used cars or livestock, the following tips can help save you some money. * Get to know the market. When preparing to attend an auction, men and women should study up on any items they're looking to purchase. This helps gain a better understanding of the current market rates and what is a high or low price for an item. You likely won't know what a good deal is without first doing your homework. * Sign up for alerts. Research the various auctions and sign up for their mailing lists so

you are alerted when something you might be interested is hitting the auction block. * Do a dry run. It might help to visit an auction even if you don't plan to buy anything. This allows you to get a feel for how fast things move as well as the methods for bidding. Being informed can eliminate mistakes due to nerves or misinformation. * Set a budget. Establish a budget before walking through the auction doors and stick to it. It's easy to get carried away in the heat of bidding, and you do not want to overspend. After all, your goal is to save money. * Don't bid on items you can't afford. Ensure your finances are in place so you can afford the items you bid on. Depending on the auction, you may need to leave a deposit and then complete the deal within a certain period of time. * Purchases are typically "asis" and final. Auction sales are generally final. You may bid on sight-unseen items and

will be responsible for making repairs or accepting the

item in its current condition.

Real estate investing for beginners On the heels of a recession that saw home values drop, many would-be investors have shied away from buying investment properties. But real estate has historically remained a sound investment, boasting a long-term appreciation rate that makes it a worthwhile investment for those who can withstand temporary setbacks in housing prices and hold on to their properties over the long haul. But investors are often nervous as they look for their first properties. Uncertainty about housing prices aside, investing in real estate also is risky, and first-time investors need to be comfortable with such risk in order to make the most of their investments. The following are a few things potential real estate investors should consider as they decide if investing in real estate is right for them. Personal ability Real estate investors typically have tenants, and those tenants inevitably have needs. Investors who have experience as contractors may not find it difficult to renovate a property and make it more attractive to tenants, nor are they likely to be inconvenienced when minor issues on the property need to be addressed. Investors with no such experience will need to hire contractors to do the work for them,

cutting into potential profits down the road. In addition, investors who don't have the ability and/or the time to address minor issues like a clogged drain or a drafty window on their own will need to hire a property management firm to tend to such needs. Such firms are effective, but also expensive, further cutting into your profits. Even those investors with contracting experience may have little or no knowledge of how the leasing process works, forcing them to rely on a real estate firm to write up leases and ensure all leases stay current. This, too, can cut into an investor's profits. Investors who don't bring any relevant expertise to the table can still make a profit from their real estate investments, but those profits likely won't be as significant when outside companies must be hired to ensure the property is in good shape and all necessary documents are in order and up-to-date. Time Real estate is often a time-consuming investment. Tenants pay good money to live in attractive rental properties, and those tenants will have a host of needs that must be met. Investors must be sure they have the time to address their tenants' concerns, especially investors with no plans to hire property management firms. Po-

tential investors who already have full plates at work and at home may not be able to devote the time necessary to make the most of their real estate investments, and therefore might be better off finding another way to invest their money. Time also must be considered when considering profits. Real estate is not the type of investment that turns a profit overnight. Even investors who are looking to invest in an up-and-coming neighborhood must be prepared to hold onto their properties for at least a few years, if not much longer, to maximize their investments. Though real estate is a sound investment, it is not a get rich quick type of investment, so investors looking to make a quick buck should consider alternatives before buying investment properties. Size First-time real estate investors might be wise to choose a smaller property for their initial investment. Larger properties can be overwhelming to manage, and investors often rely on property management firms to tend to these properties. Such firms charge more to manage bigger properties, which can eat into investors' finances. Veteran investors can handle such overhead costs, but first-timers might find themselves caught off guard upon realizing the gravity of

FOR RENT: 1- Bedroom Apartment in Canaseraga. No pets or smoking. $600/mo. Utilities included, security deposit required. (607)295-9993

their financial commitment. A good rule of thumb for first-time investors is to stick to smaller properties, only moving on to larger buildings once they are fully comfortable with all that comes with investing in real estate. Costs The cost of a real estate investment goes beyond the purchase price of the home. In addition to the mortgage on the property, investors must pay the taxes and insurance on the property, as well as any costs associated with maintaining and managing the property. Certain tax breaks are available to real estate investors depending on where they live. For example, in the United States, taxes on the profits when a property is sold may be deferred if those profits are immediately rolled into another property (such a deferment is only available to those investors who arrange this exchange prior to selling the initial property). Potential investors need to consider all of these costs, and might want to hire a real estate lawyer to help them make the most of their investments and any profits they yield. But even hiring an attorney is an additional cost investors must consider before investing.
