Simple ways to trim auto insurance costs The cost of owning an automobile extends beyond maintenance and fueling costs. One of the biggest expenses motorists must plan for is auto insurance, the cost of which can vary greatly depending on geography and driver history. But no matter where drivers live or what their histories are, there are

some simple ways for drivers to save money on their monthly insurance premiums. · Reassess your driving habits. Auto insurance companies consider how many miles drivers drive per year when determining the cost of an insurance policy. Many drivers provide this information when opening a policy,

but then never update it when renewing or extending their policies. If you drive less now than you did when you opened your policy, notify your insurance company and you might end up paying less each month, especially if your daily commute is considerably shorter than it used to be. · Check your credit rating.

Another way to save money on your auto insurance is to check your credit rating and, if necessary, take steps to improve your credit score. Credit rating is another variable insurance companies use to determine drivers' premiums, and a good credit rating can save drivers a substantial amount of money on

their policies. If your credit rating has improved since you opened your policy, contact your insurance company and you might see the cost of your insurance reduced dramatically. It's also good to periodically view your credit report to determine if there are any errors that are negatively affecting your rating. Such errors may be inflating your auto insurance premiums. · Hit the books. No matter how many years you have behind the wheel, your auto insurance company may offer you discounts if you periodically take defensive driving courses. Such classes are inexpensive, but they may save you as much as 10 percent on the cost of your auto insurance policy. Young, inexperienced drivers and seniors tend to benefit from defensive driving courses more than other drivers.

October 29, 2015 • Page 15

· Change your policy. Drivers also can save money by making changes to their policies. Raising your deductible is perhaps the easiest way to save money without affecting your coverage, and such a decision can save you as much as 15 percent depending on how high a deductible you're willing to pay. Drivers whose cars are older and completely paid off might want to drop their collision insurance, which pays you if your car is damaged or destroyed in an accident. Such insurance won't yield much in return if your car is not worth much money, and dropping it from your policy can save you between 10 and 15 percent. Auto insurance is a necessity for drivers of all ages, but there are several ways to cut the costs of insurance premiums without affecting coverage.

How to tend to an indoor herb garden Fresh herbs and recently picked ingredients can add flavor to any meal. A home chef can even improve the flavor of storebought or prepared foods with an herb garnish that can transform otherwise bland dishes into something you'll want to eat again and again. Harvesting fresh herbs is easy for homeowners

who have gardens right in their backyards. However, everyone does not have a backyard, and even those that do might find their gardens threatened by changing seasons or unwanted critters. When gardens are moved indoors, the bounty of fresh ingredients continues no matter the date on the calendar.

Herb gardens are perhaps some of the easiest gardens to cultivate indoors because they don't require large pots or much space. The plants themselves are relatively compact, and it only takes a pinch of herbs to give a meal some extra flavor. When growing herbs indoors, your indoor grow-

ing area must have adequate light to simulate the longer days of summer; otherwise, the plants may go dormant. It's ideal to have a southern exposure on the herbs, with at least eight hours of sunlight per day. If you do not live in a particularly sunny locale, consider supplementing the plants with grow

lights, which will provide the full spectrum of light the plants need to thrive. Indoor air can become too dry for herbs, so you will need to compensate by providing humidity. While there may be added humidity in a kitchen greenhouse window, it still may not be enough to keep the plants healthy. Think about misting the plants daily to create some extra humidity, or place herb pots on top of a water-filled tray with pebbles so the evaporating water will add moisture without making the roots soggy. Insects are another threat to indoor gardens because there is no cold weather to inhibit the hatching of insect eggs.

October 29, 2015 • Page 17

Soil from outdoors may be more susceptible to insects that are already living in the dirt. Instead of soil from outside, use packaged soil or a nonsoil alternative that will hold moisture without the added risk of bugs. If small insects appear, use a mist of soapy water to kill the bugs without harming the plants or making the herbs unfit for eating. Group herbs together according to their watering needs to make maintenance that much easier. New sprouts generally need more water than established plants. Prune the herbs as needed for recipes. If the herbs experience a growth spurt, trim some

of the plants and freeze the herbs for later use. Many indoor herb gardeners begin by growing

parsley, chives, oregano, and basil, but you can experiment with just about any herb.

15 Great Hunting Tips Article by Outdoor Life Online Editor-www.outdoorlife.com One of the most interesting things about being a hunter is that the learning process never stops. Added up over the years, these gems of knowledge make us all better hunters. HUNTING STRATEGIES 1) GO EXTRA SLOW When still-hunting, most of us don't move slowly enough, or stay put long enough. Try using your watch as a guide. Decide on a period of time to stand still, such as five minutes. This way you'll be forced to remain quiet and silent for a minimum amount of time, longer if necessary. 2) STOP AT THE NOISE Here's a saying I came up with to remind me of an animal's terrific senses. "The sound of a snapped twig is quickly forgotten by the hunter, but long remembered by the quarry." If you make an unusually loud noise, stop and stand there as long as you can if you suspect animals

are close by. A deer might stand a long time and stare in your direction. If it doesn't see or smell you, it might go back to feeding or whatever else it was doing before it was disturbed. 3) QUICK-STEPPING FOR DEER A deer is easily alerted to human cadence as we walk through noisy leaves. This might sound like a dumb idea, but try taking quick steps in a short sprint for 10 to 20 yards or so. Stop, and do it again. Keep your footfalls as light as possible; you'll be surprised at how much you sound like a squirrel scrambling through the leaves. 4) DESIGN A BETTER DRIVE When putting a drive together, we tend to place standers in front of and alongside the area being driven. If you have enough people in your party, position a stander in the rear where the drive originated. Deer will often wait for hunters to pass and then sneak back and run off in the opposite direction.

5) DRIVE SOLO Try a one-man drive if you're hunting alone. Purposely walk into an area with the wind at your back. The idea is to stir deer up and get them moving. Once you've passed through, make a circle and do it again. You might see confused deer creeping about, unsure of your location. If this doesn't work, take a position on the flank of the area you walked through and wait an hour or two. You might see deer sneaking back in, believing the danger has passed. This works in dense thickets that deer use for security cover. 6) PICK YOUR LANDMARKS When you plan to stalk an animal by making a big circle and coming up behind it, it's easy to become confused as you change your location. Pick a distinctive object on the skyline that you can recognize from the back, such as a large tree, a fence line or a rock, to help guide you to the correct spot. 7) JUDGE THE QUARRY'S PACE

Also try to anticipate where the animal will be once you complete your stalk. Before starting, watch the quarry long enough to determine its direction and rate of travel if it's actively feeding or walking. Pick your destination accordingly. 8) FOLLOW WITH CARE If you're tracking an animal, remember that the quarry will be alert to its back trail. A really fresh track requires you practically to still-hunt rather than merely follow, especially if the animal isn't "lined out" but is taking bites of browse as it goes. 9) CLEAR SHOOTING LANES When you first get into your tree stand, practice taking up shooting positions for all the directions from which an animal might appear. After doing that, try to remove branches in the line of fire if you can reach them, and take up the position that requires the least amount of movement for you to turn in any direction. Be sure your safety strap is secure and allows free

movement. 10) SWEEP AWAY BLIND CLUTTER If you're sitting in a ground blind or standing next to a tree, sweep away leaves and brush with your boot so the area you're in is clean of forest debris. This will eliminate unnecessary noise if you must make a move when an animal approaches. 11) GLASS AND RE-GLASS When glassing with a binocular early in the morning, move to your vantage point in the dark. Glass likely spots, but don't take just a single cursory look. From time to time, refocus your attention on places you've already checked out. The changing light might reveal animals you hadn't seen before or animals that have moved out of deep brush or timber. TRACKING 12 HOW TO FOLLOW A BLOOD TRAIL Move quietly as you track. Be alert for the quarry, which might be bedded just ahead. If other hunters are with you, communicate with hand signals. Mark every spot of blood with a piece of toilet tissue or flagging, which should be re-

moved later. 13 DON'T GIVE UP Many times a good blood trail that you've followed a long way will peter out to nothing. That's not a good sign, because the animal is still going strong, but it doesn't mean it isn't fatally wounded. Don't give up. Start looking for tiny spots of blood. Get on your hands and knees, if necessary, to help keep you on the spoor. 14 CALL THE SPOT If you're hunting in a brushy area and you drop an animal at a distance, make a mental note of where it stood at the shot, especially if you must take your eyes off it to get there. It's vitally important to find the precise area so you can pick up the blood trail. 15 BEWARE OF THE 'INSTANT DROP' An animal that drops at the shot is more likely to run off than one that doesn't go down but runs some distance and then falls. The animal that falls immediately might do so from shock, then recover and run. When an animal drops instantly, stay put and be prepared for a quick follow-up shot.

Buying a condo not the same as buying a home Stringent lending policies and the escalating costs of home ownership have led many prospective home buyers to consider condominiums instead of singlefamily homes. Condos are typically less expensive than single-family homes, which makes lenders and borrowers alike feel more comfortable. Lenders feel better because the loans aren't as large, while borrowers are more comfortable because such loans allow them to improve their standing with lenders, potentially setting the table for a low-interest home loan down the road. But the differences between buying a condo and buying a single-family home go beyond the bottom line. The following are a few things prospective buyers should know about condos before they view any properties. * Condos come with fees. Unlike single-family

homes, condos come with homeowners association fees. These fees cover the cost of maintenance and repairs to the property. This includes landscaping and garbage collection, as well as general repairs throughout the condominium complex. Fees vary significantly from community to community, and the best deal is not always the one with the lowest homeowners association fees. Low fees tend to provide less bang for the buck, generally covering only the most basic services. Higher fees often mean the community offers more amenities, such as a private pool and gym for residents. Some people prefer such amenities, while others would rather find better deals on their own. But prospective condo buyers must include fees in their monthly budgets when determining how much they can afford to spend.

* Condos come with rules. Owners of single-family homes can create their own rules for their households, while condo owners must agree to follow rules established by the homeowners association or the property management firm responsible for maintaining the community and enforcing the rules. Rules may not allow pets or only allow pets of a certain size. Other rules may restrict how owners can decorate their condos during the holiday season or how they can furnish the exterior of their properties, limiting patio furniture to a set number of chairs or tables. Some condo owners are glad such rules are in place, while others might find such stipulations intrusive. Each community has different rules, and prospective buyers should familiarize themselves with a community's rules before buying any properties within that community. * Condos often have management firms. Property management firms can be great to deal with, but they can be troublesome as well. A good property management firm produces satisfied community members who speak glowingly of their communities, while a poorly run management firm can frustrate homeowners who feel they are

not getting what they're paying for. Some property management firms fail to collect homeowners association fees for months at a time, only to send letters demanding back dues down the road. Others simply don't live up to expectations, failing to make repairs in a timely manner while letting the property fall into disrepair. If possible, speak to current community residents about how the property is managed. If residents are not available, potential buyers should attempt to attend a homeowners association meeting, which can shed light on what it's like to live within a given community and how accessible the management firm is to community members and how well it tends to those members' needs. * Condos are not as private as single-family homes. Much like apartment dwellers, condo owners often share walls with neighbors. That means condo owners will have to sacrifice some privacy. Prospective buyers who consider privacy a top priority may want to continue living in an apartment until they can afford to buy a single-family home. Though condo owners rarely have someone living above or below them, sharing walls with neighbors is still not

as private as owning a single-family home. Condominiums are great options for people who want to own their homes but don't have enough money or credit history to buy a single-family home. But buyers must educate themselves about condominium life before signing on the dotted line. FOR RENT: Village of Dansville Studio Apt for one. No pets. $435.00 mo plus utilities and water. Career opportunities abound in the nonprofit sector Nonprofit organizations require the talents of many different types of workers and not just those looking to volunteer. According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, more than 1.4 million nonprofit organizations operate within the United States alone, so individuals who hope to work in the nonprofit sector have many organizations to choose from. Even though they do not aim to turn a profit, nonprofit organizations still face the same challenges and have the same needs, including the need for competent staff members, as many for-profit businesses. In addition to earning their livings, employees of nonprofit organizations often thrive on the notion that they are doing their share to make a difference in the world. As with any other company, nonprofits have to fill certain roles in an organization. The following are some common job descriptions as they pertain to nonprofit organizations. · Executive officer: The executive director or president of a nonprofit reports directly to the organization's Board of Directors. He or she will have strategic and operational responsibility for the nonprofit's staff, expansion, programs,

and daily mission. The ED will serve as a coach to help retain and develop the nonprofit's senior management team, depending on the size of the organization. He or she also will serve as a liaison between the board and the employees. · Chief financial officer: The size of a nonprofit, the complexity of its programs and its revenue sources will drive the responsibilities of the CFO. At smaller nonprofits, the CFO may branch out beyond complex finance and investment activities to take on functional and even problem-solving capabilities. At larger nonprofits, the CFO may be more involved with reporting and meeting the requirements of government contracts. · Fundraisers: Fundraising is a key component for nonprofits and how many of them remain operational. Portions of fundraising efforts are devoted to corporate operations, while the remainder will be allocated for the cause. Fundraising can be broken down further into various niches, depending on the nonprofit's size. Annual funds, alumni affairs, direct marketing, grant seeking, and donor relations are various parts of the larger fundraising picture. If the nonprofit has a large fundraising staff, each of

these divisions may be handled separately. Otherwise, all of them may be grouped under the umbrella fundraising title. · Public relation specialist: A public relations or marketing professional works with senior management or independently to develop a communications plan for the organization. He or she will develop the nonprofit's core messages and ensure consistency across various media. A PR professional also will respond to inquiries about the organization. In times of crisis, the PR professional will downplay any negative news and

work to shed positive light on the organization. · Administrative roles: Nonprofits need accounting and financial professionals, office administrators, human resources employees, information systems and IT workers, and a staff to handle marketing. Administrative positions often overlap inside small nonprofit organizations. Nonprofits may not have the same pay structure as other private organizations, but nonprofit professionals often find their jobs rewarding.
