Pets for those with allergies People with allergies must learn to make certain concessions. This typically includes avoiding those things, including animals, that can trigger an allergic reaction. Individuals who tear up or start to sneeze around animals may wonder if there are any animals that won't trigger such reactions. Despite information to the contrary, there really are no such things as hypoallergenic dogs and other pets. Certain breeders may advertise hypoallergenic pets, but it is impossible to produce an animal that is safe for all. That's because many animal allergies result from pet dander, which are the skin flakes from an animal's fur or hair, and not the fur of the pet. According to the Asthma and

Allergy Foundation of America, people with pet allergies have supersensitive immune systems that react to harmless proteins in the pet's dander. Some people are allergic to saliva from dogs and cats, or may have allergies to the sebum, or oils, in their skin. Although there are no guarantees that pets won't trigger allergic reactions, certain animals could be a bit more friendly to those who are generally intolerant to animals. Dogs * Portuguese water dog: This breed is active and has a coat that requires frequent grooming. The grooming process helps to wash away dander and oils that may contribute to allergies. * Kerry blue terrier: This

fun-loving, active dog is thought to be low-allergy because it sheds less dander than some other breeds. It has a soft, wavy coat that fades from black to a blue-gray color as the dog ages. * Standard poodle: This intelligent breed has a long hair growth cycle, which minimizes shedding. The dog lacks an undercoat, which also can alleviate extra shedding of dander-laden fur. Furthermore, poodles require professional grooming and frequent maintenance, which can keep allergen levels low. * Bichon frise: Much like the poodle, the Bichon Frise is less likely to trigger allergies because its short, curled coat makes it difficult for dander to escape. * Lhasa apso: This small breed does not shed its coat and requires frequent bathing to remain clean. The combination of these factors can reduce allergen potential. * Poodle mixes: Many breeds are being bred with poodles to create a coat that is more conducive to allergy sufferers. Poodles mixed with cocker spaniels or

labradors may shed less fur and dander. Cats * Sphynx cat: This animal is furless and could be better for allergy sufferers because it will not shed allergen-laden throughout the house. Still, it's important to note that many cat allergies are the result of the Fel D 1 glycoprotein, which is present in skin secretions and cat saliva. There's no certainty that the hairless Sphynx still won't trigger a reaction. * Devon rex cat: This breed of cat has a short, downy fur coat. Because it has less fur than other felines, the Devon rex cat does not need to lick itself as frequently to groom its fur. This cuts down on saliva-based allergens being deposited onto the cat's fur. * Balinese: Although this cat has long fur, it may be good for allergy sufferers because it produces less of the Fel D 1 protein than other cats. * Siberian: Perhaps due to lower enzyme levels in their saliva, Siberian cats may produce minimal reactions among allergy suffers.

Make selling your car a cinch Escalating costs of new cars have led many buyers to look to the preowned vehicle market when the time comes to replace their existing automobiles. Preowned vehicles can be a great bargain, putting drivers behind the wheels of relatively new cars at a fraction of the cost of brand new cars. While the rising reputation of preowned vehi-

cles has been good for automotive dealerships with vast inventories of trade-ins, it's also been good for private sellers, who no longer have to deal with the stigma once assigned to preowned cars and trucks. Private sellers who want to get top dollar for their preowned vehicles can take several simple steps that might help them and at a price they can ¡ Organize maintenance sell their vehicles quickly be happy with. receipts. According to

Dansville - Wayland PennySaver

Edmunds.com, an online resource for all things automotive, the average price of a preowned car reached a record $16,800 in 2014. That's a significant sum of money, and as a result preowned vehicle buyers are no longer taking the risks they might once have been willing to take when buying older, less expensive cars and trucks. Many prospective buyers expect to see a vehicle's maintenance history, so sellers should

organize their maintenance receipts for everything from routine oil changes to tire rotations and so on. If you did not keep your receipts, visit your mechanic and request a statement indicating your vehicle maintenance history. Make copies of these receipts and statements and have them readily available when prospective buyers come to look at your vehicle. · Get a vehicle inspection before putting it up

for sale. Many sellers put their cars on the market and then wait weeks, if not months, before they sell their vehicles. That may be a byproduct of misjudging the market value of their vehicles. Have your vehicle inspected before putting it up for sale so you know its true value. Share the results of the inspection

with prospective buyers so they feel more comfortable purchasing your vehicle. · Address any issues that come to light during the inspection. Fix any minor issues, like broken taillights, dents, scratches and worn down tires before putting the vehicle up for sale. Such damage is

typically inexpensive to fix, but buyers won't want to see a car with such issues, which suggests sellers did not care much about the vehicle. If any larger issues arise during the inspection, consider trading the vehicle in rather than selling it on your own. Dealers get discounts on body work, so you may get more money for a trade-in with body damage than you would get for the same car selling it on your own. · Be courteous with prospective buyers. Customer service is often an overlooked part of selling a preowned vehicle. Be courteous with prospective buyers, patiently answering all of their questions and allowing them to size up

the vehicle as they see fit. Always go with prospective buyers on a test drive, taking a friend or relative along so you are not alone with a stranger in the car. If buyers want to take the vehicle to their own mechanic, agree to it so long as you can come along and be present when any inspection is performed. Being respectful of the position preowned-vehicle buyers are in is a great way to develop a rapport that can help you sell your vehicle that much quicker. The preowned-vehicle market is booming, and private sellers can employ several selling tactics to get the best price possible for their cars and trucks.

Creative ways to recycle leaves Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees' roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. · Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces

with a mulching mower so they don't choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. · Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter. · Stuffing: Create whimsical scare-

crows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and display your scarecrow. · Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. · Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly

fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. · Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of "hide and seek."

Exploring depression Nearly everyone has dealt with a life-changing event that brings about feelings of sadness. But some people struggle to enjoy normally happy situations. When these feelings do not go away on their own, they may indicate the presence of depression. Major depression is one of the world's most common mental disorders. The World Health Organization offers that major depression also carries the heaviest burden of disability among mental and behavioral disorders. People often do not realize they're suffering from a depressive episode, and as a result, many never seek or receive the care they need. According to "The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders," major depression is characterized by depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure and at least four other symptoms. These may include problems with self-image, sleep, energy, ability to function, and changes in appetite. The National Institute of Mental Health says that, as of 2013, an estimated 15.7 million adults aged 18 or older in the United States had at least one major depressive episode in the past year. Depression is far-reaching

and more common than one may imagine. Oftentimes, however, people delay seeking treatment because of embarrassment or the stigma that surrounds a mental illness diagnosis. The NIMH indicates that women are 70 percent more likely than men to experience depression during the course of their lifetimes, largely due to hormones. Elevated rates of depression among women also may be due to the fact that they tend to be more vocal and proactive in seeking help. According to Gail Lovallo, LCSW, owner of Peaceful Living Counseling Services, LLC, depression can be linked to any number of factors. Depression may result from a particularly traumatic episode in one's life and often accompanies posttraumatic stress disorder. Individuals can become depressed when diagnosed with a disease. Women may experience postpartum depression after childbirth. A considerable percentage of people experience depression when seasons change, and that could be caused by the reduction of exposure to natural sunlight when fall gives way to winter. Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD, is often more com-

mon the farther north one lives. Depression can affect one's home and work life. In the journal Depression and Anxiety, a study analyzed depression statistics from the Canadian National Population Health Survey and found that major depression doubled a person's chance of becoming divorced or separated. Others may face job loss thanks to lack of productivity or missed days. While depression is common, it also is highly treatable. Various therapies exist to mitigate symptoms and restore people to more well-rounded lifestyles. Counseling and medication are two of the more common treatments for depression. Accord-

ing to Psych Central, the Internet's largest and oldest independent mental health social network, 60 to 70 percent of depressed patients who are given an antidepressant recover from their depression in three to six weeks, provided that the medication dosage is correct and the patient continues to take the medicine as directed. Depression can be a devastating illness that seemingly comes out of the blue. However, it's important for people to realize that depression is common and treatment methods are quite effective. Consult with a primary care doctor or a mental health professional if you believe you are experiencing depression.

Time your move right to save money Buying a new home is the most expensive purchase a person is likely to make in his or her lifetime. It also can be one of the more stressful. The Employee Relocation Council states that moving is the third most stressful event in life, following death and divorce. But a well-timed move can reduce stress and save money. Moving during certain times of the year can result in considerable savings. Moving during the summer, when children are out of school and the weather is nice, can make a move more manageable. Keep in mind that because late spring and summer are the peak moving seasons, they also tend to be more expensive. Many moving companies and truck rental agencies will charge a premium if you use their services during the summer. Furthermore, crews may change in the summer when students on vacation could fill in for regular, more experienced movers. High prices are not only reserved for those who buy a new house during the spring and summer. Renters may find spring and summer is also the peak season for rentals.

Many apartment managers can attest that the dates between June 2 and August 30 are quite busy in terms of apartment turnover. College students are more likely to move as soon as the academic year ends, and many landlords plan leases to expire in the summer months to ensure that re-renting places will be easier thanks to a flooded apartment market. According to Apartment Wiz, a Houston-based apartment locating service, although there might be greater apartment availability during the warmweather months, it also means greater competition between prospective tenants. That greater competition can drive up prices. But apartments are harder to fill in the fall or at the onset of winter. That's because many people do not want the hassle of moving once school has started or the weather has chilled. Landlords who are stuck paying utilities and advertising fees for vacant apartments are far more likely to negotiate rent prices, lease terms and even security deposits during the winter in an effort to fill the apartment

quickly. People sitting with homes on the market are also more likely to negotiate during cooler months when foot traffic has fizzled out. That can make shopping for a home in the fall advantageous to home buyers. Here are some other tips to reduce stress and save money when moving into a new home or apartment. * Move mid-week. Weekends are a prime time for truck rentals and moving companies. Pick a Tuesday or a Wednesday to move, and you're much more likely to find an available moving service (even during peak moving months); you may even be able to negotiate a lower rate. * Pick a mid-month moving date. Many people move at the beginning of the month when leases are

up or after mortgage payments are made. Fewer people move in the middle of the month, so you might find more affordable moving deals if you can wait a few extra weeks. * Schedule a fall or winter move. The American Moving and Storage Association says half of all moves occur during onethird of the year -- between the beginning of May and Labor Day. Beat the rush by moving outside of these dates. * Get an early start. Many people underestimate the amount of time it takes to actually move their belongings. Try to schedule a moving company to come very early in the morning to give you ample time to pack up the truck and unpack at your new home.

Tips for juggling work and family Balancing work and family is a juggling act faced by many working parents. Responsibilities to work and family often overlap, and that can make solving the riddle of balancing work and family that much more difficult. Single-income households have decreased dramatically over the last several decades, as escalating costs of living have made it difficult for many families to get by on just one income. But working parents can employ several strategies, both at the office and at home, as they attempt to make the job of juggling commitments to work and family a little less difficult. Around the office A major concern many parents have as they attempt to balance work and

family is that they are not spending enough time at home with their children or not paying enough attention to their kids or even their spouses when they are home. One way to find more time at home is to inquire about the possibility of working remotely. Advancements in technology that have made it easier to remotely communicate with clients and coworkers has led to an influx of workfrom-home employees. While working from home does not mean workloads will diminish, it does save men and women the time they would spend commuting to and from work, and that translates to more time at home with the family. If working remotely full-time is not a possibility, men and women can ask if it's possi-

ble to do so one or two days a week, as such a schedule will still provide more time at home. Another avenue men and women can explore as they attempt to achieve a better balance between work and family concerns how efficiently they do their jobs. Chatting with coworkers about issues that do not pertain to work can be a great way to reduce workrelated stress, but professionals who feel as if they never have enough time to get their jobs done in a typical work day should determine if they are working as efficiently as possible. Avoid too much water cooler chitchat and resist the temptation to check personal emails or text messages while at work. Such distractions can eat up a

considerable amount of time over the course of a workday, making it harder for men and women to get their jobs done in a typical workday and forcing them to stay late or bring work home. Men and women working to achieve a greater balance between work and family also can examine how willing they are to take on additional work. While coworkers love a team player willing to pitch in, routinely accepting extra work can drastically cut into the time men and women have to do their own jobs as well as the time they have to spend with their families. Helping coworkers out in a pinch is fine, but men and women should resist any urges to take on more than they can LOOKING FOR individuals wanting residual income and financial freedom without sacrificing current job. reasonably handle. At home Men and women also can take steps at home to create a better balance between work and family. Working parents who want the time they have with their children each night to be more substantive can turn off their devices upon arriving home from work. Devices such as smartphones and tablets keep working professionals attached to their offices, and many men and women are tempted to check work emails or answer phone calls and voicemails even when they have left the office for the day. Parents should resist that temptation so their families know their focus is on them and not back at the office. make more efficient use of time at home. For example, rather than spending an hour each night making dinner, working parents can use a slow cooker so family meals are ready the moment everyone arrives home at night. That frees up time the family can spend together and gives working parents one less thing to do when they arrive home. Working parents looking get more quality time with their families also can cut back on the time families spend watching television each night. Limit television time to an hour or two each night, using the extra time to connect with one another. Many working parents strive to create a greater balance between work and family. While doing so is not always easy, men and women can employ strategies at work and at home to make the challenge a little less complicated.
