lassic, romantic, modern. Whatever your bridal style, designers are finding the sweet spot for the next wave of bethrothed who are especially savvy when it comes to keeping up with celebrities and fashionistas. “The brides nowadays are a sophisticated market,” and the market is moving fast to keep up, said Australia-based bridal designer Sarah Janks. “Traditionally a slow-moving market trend-wise, the advent of social media and internet has sped up the pace significantly in presenting bridal trends to the consumer. Companies are watching what their customers are doing on Pinterest and Instagram and responding to their preferences,” Janks said. While bridal design doesn’t change drastically year after year, “like in sportswear, bridal gown designs have seasonal trends,” said Lori Conley, divisional merchandise manager for bridal, lingerie and flower girl, David’s Bridal. “We’ve seen a huge shift into brides looking for coverage including necklines and sleeves. The same

4

trend has been seen on the red carpet during the recent awards season with celebs sporting long sleeves. We look to infuse our bridal gowns with trends brides are familiar with in their everyday wardrobes.”

Twist on tradition

2016 will see a return to tradition — with a twist. “More than ever we are looking back in time for inspiration to all those beautiful brides we will never forget. For example, brides like Princess Diana or Grace Kelly – taking aspects from those ‘wow’ brides to make it our own and relevant to today’s world,” said bridal designer Francesca Miranda. “I think that details are what makes a gown different today in a traditional gown than what could have been two generations ago.” Another way traditional gowns stand out is with notable differences in fabrications and necklines. “Structured fabrics were extremely popular in past years, where the current trend is much softer, focusing on tulle and lace styles. Necklines have also come full circle, where in the last few decades strapless has

really been the mainstay in bridal fashion. We saw a shift in necklines starting when Kate Middleton wore her exquisite Alexander McQueen, taking bridal necklines higher and more demure,” Conley said. Contrastingly, “daring brides are taking the plunge this season, choosing gowns that feature plunging front necklines or low back details. These details grace sultry silhouettes such as body-hugging trumpets or slinky sheaths. A hint of skin through sheer illusion necklines, a crop top or slits finish of the sexy look perfectly,” Conley said. Exposing the back can be sensual and demure if balanced with a high front neckline or an illusion neckline on a V-neck gown edged in lace, Janks said.

Sophia Vergara’s detachable overskirt and 3-D embellishments are right on target for many brides. The detachable skirt “is a great way for a bride to be traditional for the ceremony and as long as she wants into the night, and then have a lighter dress to dance with,” and 3-D embellishments add texture, depth and richness to a gown, Miranda said.

Celebrity influence

For inspiration, brides continue to emulate celebrity style. “For instance, off-the-shoulder necklines became increasingly important after Amal (Alamuddin) donned her Oscar de La Renta gown at her wedding to George Clooney,” Conley said. “Lace long sleeves were overwhelmingly popular among celebs and royals this year, with Nicky Hilton and Princess Beatrice of Sweden opting for lacey coverage. Solange Knowles infused couture design into her caped wedding gown, which translated into a great option for bridal fashion. Pop culture also influences bridal trends – with 1920s in the spotlight in Hollywood through ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘The Great Gatsby’ we’ve seen art deco influences, especially in beading, make their way into bridal.”

“Accessories are a great way for a bride to create a unique look that embodies the aesthetic of the day,” said Lindsay Short, David’s Bridal accessories buyer.

dramatic effect,” Short said.

• Hair: Select the proper veil, headband or tiara, pins and combs to compliment your gown.

Beyond jewelry, other finishing touches can add wow factor.

• Neckline: Dangly earrings, statement necklaces. • Coverings: Shawls, lace jackets, capes, body jewelry. • Waistline: Embellished sashes and belts. • Extras: Bracelets, handbags. When it comes to jewelry there are no set rules when choosing metals, Short said. “However, silver accessories tend to go well with white and ivory gowns; rose gold and yellow gold accessories tend to go well with ivory and champagne gowns,” she said. A veil is an iconic wedding accessory, but there are so many choices – from short and sweet birdcage veils to princess-style chapel and cathedral lengths. “A veil can be worn for styling, traditional or religious purposes,” Short said. Depending on what look a bride is aiming to achieve, there are blusher, short, mid-length, cathedral and even two-tiered veils embellished with lace, beads, flowers and crystal. Other headpieces to choose from include headbands, tiaras, floral halos, clips and combs. “These pieces can even be layered together with a veil for a more

“Sashes and belts are very popular for brides to accentuate the waist as well as add sparkle and color to the dress. There are many options to choose from, including floral, crystal and pearl embellishments; solid-colored ribbons; satin, grosgrain and organza finishes. ‘Sash sliders’ are perfect additions to add a little extra sparkle to a solid ribbon,” Short said. With so many options, brides should take an inventory before they start buying accessories so they don’t overembellish. “There’s room for multiple accessories to complete a look. The key is to find a balance between statement pieces and simple add-ons without drawing attention away from the dress. Lastly, to keep everything at your fingertips, “a handbag will help a bride hold on to her necessities throughout the day,” Short said.

Grooms

Confessions of a former groom Five things I would have done differently By Gregg Rosenzweig insideweddings.com

W

hen it came to the perfect marriage proposal, I had it all figured out: charmed speech; ideal setting; and a big, captivating rock. Fortunately for me, my pear-shaped proposal went swimmingly. Unfortunately, what followed did not. Called upon to help plan a posh wedding of fairy-tale proportions by my equally busy full-time fiancÊe, I was suddenly spearheading things I’d only seen on cable replays of Father of the Bride. While I wish I could say getting hitched went off without one, looking back, there are many things I would have done differently - things that would have made the process run smoother, be more pleasurable, and ultimately, keep us within our spending limit.

1. I’d Have Stuck To Groom-Friendly Tasks

My first mistake? Being available for all the time-draining tasks that went into planning our big shebang. Honestly, I wasn’t exactly riveted by chair-cover styles, wedding favors, and what comprised a “magnificent centerpiece - yet there I was, rifling through books of floral displays

while stifling yawns and sensing a tangible dip in testosterone. Had we divvied up the wedding workload a bit more instead of doubling up our efforts, I would have been a lot better off. In retrospect, letting her focus on bridesmaids, bridal bouquets, and baby’s breath while I tended to the DJs, videographer reels, and cake vendors seems like a fair trade off. After all, watching movies while listening to music and eating dessert was something I loved anyways - why not keep to my comfort zone?

2. I’d Have Restricted The Guest List

Sticker shock can become a somewhat daily occurrence for a groom planning a wedding, especially if he and the bride are financing the wedding themselves. Don’t believe me? Have you ever bought appetizers, dinner, and drinks for 225 people? Me neither. Ever estimated the cost of taxes, tips, and hotel “serviceâ€? charges for a Saturday-night reception in June? I didn’t think so. No matter what I imagined something would cost, sobering numbers consistently popped up to inspire looks of sheer disbelief, causing a steady pursuit of parental donations to the cause. In hindsight, having a smaller guest list )and lopping off a few courtesy invites) would have dropped our incremental costs considerably, and would’ve allowed us to spend more quality time with everyone. Instead, I shook hands with many for the very first time ‌. at my wedding.

3. I’d Have Created A Wedding Website

Where’s the rehearsal dinner? Where are you registered? Where should I stay? All good questions I could’ve answered with a simple URL during our year of wedding planning. Instead, I tried my own nuptial noose, fending for myself website-free against flurries of phones-in questions about dinners, directions, and

hotel accommodations from out inquisitive guests. Don’t make this mistake. A wedding website is a central hub for informing the masses and an essential ingredient that will save you infinite visits from the Department of Redundancy Department.

4. I’d Have Used Better Communications Skills

Looking back, there are a few things my wife and I should have communicated more clearly to key vendors before our wedding. To our dazzling DJ: A hora dance should probably never see a 15th minute. (Religious traditions can be dizzying.) And to out incredible photographer: We’d like you to meet all of our blood relatives. (Unfortunately, the photojournalistic style we requested left a few of them unsnapped.) Finally, to our banquet coordinator: Please spread the appetizer love. I mention this last because at our affair (and I share this one only with you), many people buzzed around the kitchen entrance, overwhelming tux-clad servers every time a kabob emerged. As a result, the other 50% of our wedding guests never saw an appetizer tray - and no doubt stood around questioning our desire to watch them starve.

5. I’d Have Kept Things In Better Perspective

Considering the logistics that go into wedding planning, it’s a shame if you can’t appreciate the final result of your blood, sweat, and tantrums. Between managing our parents’ desires, negotiating the guest list, and spending embarrassing amounts of time discussing place-card fonts (serif or sans serif ‌ that is the question!), I learned the key is to keep your sanity and perspective during this potentially patience-testing process. After all, it is still a celebration. So be present, have the time of your life, and most importantly, benefit from my mistakes!

BEAUTY

DIY skin care for a radiant wedding glow

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

I

f you want your skin to look its best on your wedding day but don’t want to spend big bucks at the spa, do-it-yourself facials are great way to achieve a celeb-worthy complexion. “A face mask is skincare supercharged. It’s highly concentrated, packed with benefits and gives you both immediate and cumulative benefits. ... It is to skincare what a multivitamin may be to a healthy diet: the added oomph you need for optimal results,” said author and beauty blogger Alexis Wolfer, whose book “The Radiant Bride” was published Jan. 5.

Skin tips

“You do not need to spend a lot of money or be born with killer genes to have beautiful, radiant skin – just drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water can make a huge difference.

Also, DIY beauty remedies are very affordable and pack a big punch,” Wolfer said. When your kitchen is empty, you’re in a rush or if DIY isn’t for you, “some store-bought masks are great. That said, store-bought masks – by nature of being able to sit on a store’s shelf for months or years – are packed with preservatives and/ or whittle down the active ingredients to something that’s so far removed from its original form,” Wolfer said. With DIY masks you’re not only sure the ingredients are 100 percent natural and organic, “you’re also really getting the full benefit of the ingredients in their most concentrated, truest form,” she said.

How to use

Depending on the amount of time she has before her wedding and her schedule, Wolfer recommends bridesto-be use face masks between two and four times per week.

“DIY masks are the slow and steady approach, and as you know that ultimately wins the race. Sure, a chemical peel will get you smoother, softer skin in seven days, but you also won’t want to leave the house for those seven days,” Wolfer said. Another benefit is that you can mix and match the masks you use each time. One word of caution: Don’t try anything new, not even a super gentle DIY mask, right before your wedding, Wolfer said. Wolfer’s Anti-Aging Hydrating Face Mask was created for all skin types. “The vitamin A–packed egg yolk helps to encourage cell rejuvenation, and the red wine bathes your skin in free-radicalfighting antioxidants, while the honey helps to pull moisture deep within your skin. The result: soft, smooth, supple skin that looks and feels younger,” she said.

Alexis Wolfer’s Anti-Aging Hydrating Face Mask • 1 egg yolk • 1 tablespoon red wine • 1 tablespoon raw honey In a small bowl, beat the egg yolk. Slowly add the wine and honey, stirring constantly to mix. Apply to your face, neck and décolletage with a pastry brush, avoiding your eyes and lips. Let dry for 15 to 20 minutes before washing off with your favorite facial cleanser.

GOOD grooming Tips for the fashion-forward guy

“I love the beauty and elegance of a black tuxedo. It always works well with whatever the bride is wearing.” – Joseph Abboud, fashion designer

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

O

nce she’s said yes and the ring is on her finger, all the focus and attention tends to shift toward the bride. But let’s not forget the groom. Men have to look their best on the wedding day, too. From formal tuxedos to classic suits and edgier choices, a man’s suit showcases his personality. And remember, good tailoring matters, so be sure to be meticulously measured. For a fresh take on groomswear trends, menswear fashion designer Joseph Abboud, chief creative director of Men’s Wearhouse, offered the following style guidelines. Q: What are the best-looking grooms wearing? A: I love the beauty and elegance of a black tuxedo. It always works well with whatever

the bride is wearing. You can use color in accessories to personalize your look, like a silver tie or polka dot pocket square or ivory vest. Q: A classic dark suit is perfect, but how is it styled for 2016? What gives classic black an edge? A: The groom can set himself apart with subtle accessories like pocket squares, studs and cuff links or a vest. It doesn’t have to be extremely different from his groomsmen but it’s good for him to stand out. Q: How about someone more fashion-forward? What details might his suit or tux sport? A: The trend right now is toward slimmer and leaner-looking clothes. Today’s groom should select a tuxedo that fits closer to the body for a more contemporary look. Fit and tailoring are so important these days. It’s important to have the right fit and look like you own the tuxedo. While you might

want to choose something that’s the right fit from the start, minor changes can easily be made for that perfect fit. Q: What are some trending alternatives to black? A: An ivory dinner jacket is good for the summer and gives off a casual, resort feel. Lighter-colored suits are also more casual and laid back. The navy blue tuxedo is also a more formal tuxedo that’s on trend. Q: Any material choices trending, like tweed or mixing colors and textures? A; Linen tuxedos are great for summer and grey flannel for fall. Vests in different textures give dimension to a groom’s look. Q: What finishing touches or subtle additions can make the groom stand out? A: It’s important to individualize the groom from the groomsmen. If the groomsmen are wearing a black bow tie, the groom can wear a white bow tie and vest.

RING LORD OF THE

Modern men’s bands can be sleek, flashy

W

hile some men may not wear a wedding ring after marriage — we’re looking at you, Prince William – most couples seal their vows with a set of rings. “Whether men decide to wear their ring on a daily basis or for special occasions only, we find that it is still important to couples as a symbol of their commitment to each other,” said Amanda Winters, spokeswoman at Blue Nile, an online retailer of fine jewelry. “Today’s groom has more choices than ever before. With the introduction of cobalt chrome, titanium and other alternative metals, men’s bands have emerged as an important fashion-forward purchase,” said Oded Edelman, founder and chief executive officer of James Allen, an online retailer of fine jewelry. “While we are by no means implying that men have to wear a wedding band, the designs and materials have

that wears a diamond band; showcasing the beauty of a diamond, bands with beveled accents, touches of milgrain and satin finishes continue to make a strong appearance, Winter said.

never been more appealing. To wear or not to wear a wedding band is an individual choice that ebbs and flows as each generation forges their own traditions and paths, Edelman said.

Modern traditions

The traditional sleek metal domed ring will never go out of style and is a best-seller because “the simplicity of the design provides a confident masculine feel that fits all personalities, Edelman said. Nowadays though, “customer preference is definitely evolving beyond the traditional domed ring. We’ve found many customers leaning toward lower dome and flat silhouettes in larger widths for a more modern look, Winters said. For someone looking for a more designer aesthetic, options include “channel-set diamonds in mixed metals, paisley designs framed by rope detailing and polished edges, and black diamonds set in a platinum and black rhodium infinity motif, Winters said. “For a gentleman that would like something a bit less subtle, two-tone rings offer just enough contrast to catch the eye but still offer the luxurious feel of fine metal. Rose

For the man who works with his hands and is looking for a metal that will withstand wear and tear and still look good, the choice is platinum. gold is definitely coming onto the scene for men, as well as women, either as a solid band or accented with platinum or white gold - a fresh feel for the traditional band customer, Edelman said. For something sophisticated but a bit more daring, “a platinum band with a textured finish is a great choice. We’d recommend one with a matte hammered finish, beveled edges or concave design, Winters said. For a little bling, “there is something very confident and masculine about a man

The diamond band option may seem traditional, but “today’s designers have embraced the mix of diamonds and gemstones with titanium and cobalt chrome, making bold and distinctive rings. Black diamonds and rose gold are emerging onto the wedding band scene, as are blue sapphires with white gold or alternative metal bands, Edelman said.

Look of strength For the man who works with his hands and is looking for a metal that will withstand wear and tear and still look good, the choice is platinum. “It is dense, durable, and won’t change color or shape or wear away, Winters said. For the man who is hesitant to embrace jewelry, the experts agree that the right ring can add a look of strength to a man’s hand. “Throughout history, men have worn rings as symbols of power, coterie, status, stability and sophistication, Winters said.

Do’s & Don’ts for the exit toss By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

T

he celebratory exit toss is a tradition that is thought to date back to ancient times, when people threw grain at happy couples to signify bountiful unions, according to lifestyle expert Martha Stewart.

BIGSTOCK.COM

Advice columnist Ann Landers perpetuated the myth that throwing rice at weddings was harmful to birds, and the traditional almost went by the wayside until the Audubon Society cleared things up.

It is untrue that rice expands in birds’ stomachs causing them to explode, and while rice is an affordable classic there are so many more creative ways to celebrate. Guests will get in the spirit with bubbles, biodegradable confetti, colorful pom poms, paper airplanes or birdseed. They can wave streamers and homemade ribbon wands or ring tiny bells.

For a nighttime wedding consider sparklers, glow sticks or sky lanterns, and for a tropical or destination wedding guests can toss mini blow-up beach balls.

Another idea is to set up a toss bar with bowls of herbs like lavender, rose or eucalyptus leaves, glitter, sprinkles or confetti, plus paper cones or bags for guests to fill. A live dove release is a magnificent sight, but a live butterfly release – while romantic – may not be such a good idea. Scientists and conservationists are highlighting concerns with the release of commercially raised monarch butterflies and recommending against the practice. Wild monarch butterfly populations have declined by an estimated 90 percent in the past two decades due to habitat loss, according to the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. “While many people who release massreared monarchs into the wild are trying to help the population, this practice may actually do more harm than good, said Dr. Karen Oberhauser, a professor at the University of Minnesota and a leading monarch researcher. “Farmed monarchs could spread diseases to wild monarchs, be less fit to survive in the wild and disrupt our ability to study monarchs and their movements.

engagement ring

Photo Tips To get better ring photos, fine jeweler Ritani suggests the following tips: • Let your diamond sparkle in natural light. • Take off all other jewelry, especially watches that can make your diamond appear smaller. • Take a top-down shot (called a table view) of your diamond for the most accurate impression of your diamond’s size, unless you have an emerald- or Asscher-cut diamond. These are step cuts rather than brilliant cuts and don’t hide inclusions well when photographed directly from above. • Avoid a flash close-up because the light will bounce back unflatteringly. • Get close and don’t rely on zooming in, which can cause blurriness. • Don’t share details like carat size or price unless you want to provoke jealousy and criticism.

Tips for a flawless engagement ring selfie

picture perfect said celebrity manicurist Gina Edwards.

By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

O

“The best beauty tip I have – that my mother actually shared with me – is to constantly drink water. Hydrating is not only great for your skin, but it also benefits your hands and nails. Then exfoliate, get a good manicure and moisturize,” said celebrity manicurist and nail polish designer Deborah Lippmann.

The trend of the engagement ring selfie has become so big it’s led some bridesto-be to consider something called hand rejuvenation, where a doctor injects fillers in an attempt to have hands appear more selfie-worthy. The New York Times reported that hand rejuvenation by a dermatologic surgeon can cost as much as $3,000.

Healthy hands and nails

nce Mr. Right slips a ring on your finger you’ve got months of planning before the wedding day. One thing you’ll want to do right away is share the happy news with friends, family and all your followers on Instagram.

“Plastic surgery to improve the texture of your hands is not surprising. Although the results are not permanent, it gives a flawless look. Beauty apps can improve the skin without having to make a visit to the doctor,”

‘Bare is the season’s color palette.” – Regina Galluzzo, spokeswoman for beauty company CND

For a great-looking nail from every angle, shaping is a must. “The shape of the nail can help to elongate one’s hands and improve the overall hand appearance,” said Lippmann. “I love a slightly longer, almond-shaped nail – it’s very slenderizing, quite sexy and still very strong. A short, more rounded style is always a classic go-to shape. Stay away from a super square-shaped nail, though, as it’s not the most flattering and makes fingers appear shorter.” Because hands are one of the first body parts to reveal your age, choose a skincare regimen that will plump the skin and rebuild lost density, Edwards said. With its blend of shea butter, avocado and jojoba oil plus a brightening agent, “Deborah Lippmann Rich Girl creme is great for hands or Dior XP Creme,” a nourishing balm that plumps and protects to smooth the skin, Edwards said.

Keep a hand lotion that hydrates and protects your skin at every sink in your home, at your office desk and in your purse. “Easy access is key because when adding a step to any routine, oftentimes, out of sight means out of mind,” Lippmann said. “For older women who want a youthful look, I always recommend heavier hydration at night with cotton gloves, paraffin treatments and hand masks,” Edwards said. It also helps to keep hands at room temperature, she added. An added tip for an on-point mani is to apply “a bit of cuticle oil throughout the day to keep nails healthy and shiny along with your ring,” Edwards said.

Consider the color

There are no rules for a specific color to complement your ring. “If completely unsure go with an opaque nude and add a little glitter at the tips,” Edwards said. “For the perfect romantic touch, channel earth tones for your upcoming wedding,” said Regina Galluzzo, spokeswoman for CND, a company that produces nail, hand and foot beauty products. “Bare is the season’s color palette, with warm natural hues in cream and brown, or play up your nails with a dusty light blue polish shade for your ‘something blue.’ ”

engagement photos By Melissa Erickson More Content Now

Before being photographed at the wedding, brides and grooms should already be friendly and comfortable with their photographer because they’ve already had their engagement photos taken. “Photo-based save-the-dates are all the rage ... but that isn’t the reason I stand firmly behind the belief that engagement sessions are important,” photographer Darbi G. Hebrank said. “Having an engagement session enables you to be in front of the camera with very little pressure and teaches you something very valuable — how to trust and be comfortable with your photographer. Plus, at what other time in your life will you get professional pictures of just the two of you in normal attire?” Engagement photos “will also help your photographer understand

how you photograph and to see what angles and lighting works best for you and your body shape. So when the wedding day comes, your photographer will know exactly how to pose you to make you look your very best,” said Chrissy Vensel of Chrissy Vensel Photography. For the location of the engagement photo, “pick a place that is meaningful to you and your fiance,” Vensel said. “It can be the place where you first met, the place of your first date, where you got engaged or a place you often spend time at.” If there’s not a super special place, Hebrank usually suggests just picking one overall vibe, such as playful (a playground, zoo or carnival), natural (a nature preserve or field), rural (a farmstead), urban (downtown areas), grungy (urban areas that are rife with alleys and colorful buildings), modern (museum grounds or campuses) or themed (picnic or visit to a football field).

lower selection, wedding location and time of the year all contribute to the cost of wedding flowers, which bring both big beauty as well as major expenses to your big day. “What’s a wedding without flowers?” asked David Garlington, owner of Garlington Florist in New Bedford,

From bouquets and boutonnieres, corsages, event and table decorations right down to petals tossed on the aisle, wedding flowers on average cost between $1,410 to $2,351, according to the The Wedding Report, a research company that tracks and forecasts spending and consumer trends for the wedding industry.

Floral costs can soar exponentially at upscale weddings, but brides can still get beautiful blooms on a budget if they know a few tricks.

Budget blooms

Since florists can get “about 75 percent of flowers year-round,” making cost-conscious choices will help keep the floral budget down. In-season flowers like daffodils in spring are a great choice. Be sure to ask your

you’ve got six flower arrangements,” he said.

Otherwise, opt for cheaper flowers that still pack a punch, such as thrifty carnations that are sturdy and long-lasting and great for corsages as well as tall arrangements. Other cheap choices are daisies, sunflowers, wax flowers and the richly-colored alstroemeria, which brings a “pretty big show for the same cost as a carnation,” Garlington said.

Rent rather than buy

Can’t afford peonies? With their big, lush blooms, chrysanthemums may look exotic, but their price tag isn’t.

Fill it in

Filler flowers add bulk and texture to wedding arrangements and help you stay on budget. Go for a single expensive bloom and customize with cheaper fillers like baby’s breath, Queen Anne’s lace, spray roses, wax flowers, caspia and statice flowers.

Buying your own vases for centerpieces and other arrangements is expensive. See if you can rent them from the florist or event space, Garlington said.

Also, think twice before tackling the florist’s job yourself. Do-it-yourselfers may think they’ll have help available the day before or day of the wedding, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Plus, amateurs may not know the best flowers to use or how to wire in something like trendy succulents. “You don’t want to take the professionalism out of it,” Garlington said.

Go simple

Floral costs can soar exponentially at upscale weddings, but brides can still get beautiful blooms on a budget if they know a few tricks.

Do double duty

Traditional cascade bouquets are lovely but require time-consuming and costly hand wiring. Trendy, simple hand-tied bouquets are more popular and less expensive to produce. Another way to simplify is to cut down on the number of flowers used to bouquets, boutonnieres and small centerpieces, and skip the dripping archways and other expensive floral decor. Instead of a massive centerpiece, opt for three cylindrical pillar vases of varying heights filled with water and a floating dendrobium orchid, Garlington said. Simple yet stunning — and your guests will be able to see each other across the table.

Ask your florist to send bridesmaids’ Take your florist’s advice bouquets in vases rather than boxes, “You can make a nice arrangement Garlington said. “That way you can using less expensive, not high-end repurpose them. Use them at the ceremony and again on the tables as centerpieces at the flowers that will still look beautiful,” Garlington said. Bridal The trickGuide is to be flexible reception. You have six bridesmaids? Now Adv 1/2 Page for 2016 of the and listen to your florist, he said.

T

he traditional style of matching bridesmaid dresses in the same color and fit may not be dead, but it is a bit behind the times.

“Mix-and-match bridesmaids dresses are a huge trend in bridal parties. This is a great way to allow (the bride’s) girls to be comfortable and select a dress that best flatters their silhouette,”

Turning Dreams into Reality

With different styles, shapes, fabrics and colors, the bridal party can be more flirty and fun yet still cohesive. “The most popular way is for the bride to pick her color and length while the girls pick a style that they love. For a more unique look, the bride can also play around with her favorite color combinations,” Bailey said.

Color & lace

Fashion-forward brides will keep these colors in mind when selecting dresses for their bridesmaids. “The top trending colors this season are in the neutral palette,” said Bailey, who suggested David’s Bridal Biscotti and Pewter shades as well as wine and shades of blue/green such as seafoam and mint. “For 2016, Pantone just announced their colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity (think a serene blue sky), and David’s Bridal has the perfect match with our Petal and Ice Blue colors. And of course navy is always a classic.” Complementary hues are trending, and there are a variety of popular ways to mix color. “Bridal parties can mix shades of a color or mix different colors such as pastels and metallic. If the bride prefers a more uniform look of one shade, she can mix in a pop of color with playful accessories,” Bailey said.

“It is all about how you re-style the dress. Bridesmaid dresses can be worn again to holiday parties, as a guest-of-wedding dress or even a night out. A great idea to give your long bridesmaid dress a new life is to have it altered into a short style,” Bailey said.

An iconic wedding staple, sweet and timeless lace is being reinterpreted for 2016. “Lace is a major trend this season any way you style it — in allover lace dresses, lace combos or dresses with lace details. We are even launching a new printed lace dress — perfect for a garden spring wedding,” Bailey said. “Other trending design details are floor-length styles, interesting back details and illusion necklines.”

How to make favors a hit, not a waste

tiquette doesn’t require that a couple provide a favor to their wedding guests, but it’s an age-old tradition that brides embrace even if it’s often costly and many favors end up in the trash. If you’re planning to give wedding favors, a few guidelines can make the experience more successful, said Diann Valentine, an internationally acclaimed wedding, event and interior designer with celebrity clients including Usher, Martin Lawrence, Toni Braxton, Kelis and Nas.

“Brides are very attracted to the sentimental nature of favors, especially if they’re personalized with their names and wedding date. It adds significance to the day and is something to remember it by,” Valentine said. While wedding favors may be a custom, they can also be “the biggest waste of money,” Valentine said. “It’s mind-boggling. The women who have the most challenging budgets are often the ones who are most attached to the favor,” she said.

The best wedding favors are interactive and enhance the wedding experience, making it more fun, beautiful or wonderful, Valentine said. The favor should give the guest something to do or it should be edible. For the bride and groom the day flies by, but

If your wedding budget can’t fit in the cost or you’re just not into them, skip the favors. “It’s absolutely acceptable,” Valentine said.

Candy bars with wrappers personalized with names, dates and pictures are a popular option, as are take-home goodie bags of candy that the guests can make themselves from a candy bar.

on average a guest will spend about eight hours with you on the wedding day, and that time can go by at a snail’s pace, Valentine said. A fun favor a guest will enjoy is truly a gift.

A treat to eat

Candy bars with wrappers personalized with names, dates and pictures are a popular option, as are take-home goodie bags of candy that the guests can make themselves from a candy bar. Small pots of jams or honey, hot fudge, maple syrup or hot sauce, or sweets like French macaroons, shortbread cookies or Jordan almonds are all edible options. favors. For example, pack all the ingredients for your signature cookies into a Mason jar and label with clear instructions for guests to follow to bake. One idea Valentine has used was sending couples home with a deconstructed cupcake inside a Mason jar plus two spoons and a sweet note. While the coffee bar is a traditional choice, edible favors should be comforting. “Coffee bars can leave guests wired, she said. Instead opt for something familiar or nostalgic such as Krispy Kreme doughnuts, McDonald’s French fries or mini hamburgers.

Make it fun

Interactive wedding favors can be a simple as

For one celebrity client, Valentine created a casino that was revealed at the reception. Servers handed out velvet pouches filled with personalized poker chips for the games, which guests could turn in at the end of the evening or take home as favors. If the wedding includes a demographic of people who have kids their lives, consider making the favor one little ones will enjoy. For one wedding, Valentine created a treasure chest full of small children’s toys. Guests reached in and chose something to bring home from their night away from the kids. For many people, favors are integral, but if a couple decides to forgo the favor, “leave the guilt behind, Valentine said. “Women have an innate feeling that they have to take care of others and that they have to give a favor, she said. “The reality is you’re providing food, beverages and entertainment. The gift is that you’re hosting.

hy do normally reliable friends and family members flake out when it comes to wedding RSVPs? While the rules of wedding etiquette are constantly changing, it’s always bad manners to respond late — or not at all — to a wedding invitation. “Weddings are not like a tailgate where if someone bails out, you only lose on a hotdog or bottle of soda. These are high-dollar stakes and when people don’t reply on time, you can lose out big on having to pay for someone who doesn’t show up,” said Richie Frieman, the manners expert known as Modern Manners Guy for Macmillan Publishing’s Quick and DirtyTips Network, and the author of “Reply All … Other Ways to Tank Your Career.”

it. At the end of the day the majority of our correspondence are done online, and it’s much easier click a button on your phone while waiting for your coffee that morning to remember to mail out the letter that is on your desk somewhere,” Frieman said. “For weddings, you want a response ASAP, so why not make it as easy as possible?”

Be timely

“The proper system is to send a save the date (card) at least four months ahead of time and then an invitation two months prior. I firmly believe you should give people more than enough time to mark their calendars and make proper arrangements. Not every wedding is down the street for people, so they need to book travel arrangements. Always give time. Again, no one will fault you for being early,” Frieman said.

can’t wait to share this special night with all our close family and friends.’ Feel free to change it up, but when you state that you are relying on their RSVP to plan the night, hopefully they’ll get it,” he said.

Use clear wording that gets the message across that you’re relying on their response to plan the event.

Word it right

Use clear wording that gets the message across that you’re relying on their response to plan the event. Frieman suggests being “creative with class” as the proper approach. “Try something like, ‘Your response will allow us to further enhance the night’s events and we appreciate a timely RSVP. We

Give them a deadline “Adding a date gives people a proper timeline to meet,” Frieman said. “Only the extremely unmannerly don’t grasp the importance of a wedding RSVP. Bottom line, if people want to come, they’ll RSVP.

If someone waits until the last minute, that shows their value.”

Reach out when in doubt If the deadline has passed and you haven’t heard from a guest, that’s the time “when you can easily – yet politely – ping them with an email saying, ‘Hey there, just wanted to make sure you received our wedding invitation? Hope you can join us!’ If they don’t respond, follow up with a call. But if they still don’t respond, then you have to cut them off the list and assume they’re not coming. It’s your wedding and it’s not a time to go fishing for friends that have only minimal interest; it’s the time for everyone who you care about, and who cares about you, to be together,” Frieman said. “I can’t stress enough that the wedding day is about the couple, and guests have to remember it,” Frieman said. “Don’t show up late, turn your cellphone off and allow the couple to have their moment. Weddings are expensive and have been in the works for several months, if not over a year, so how can people take them lightly? They’re important and need to be respected. You can’t redo a moment like a wedding, and a guest needs to remember that.”

7 Reasons Why You Need a Wedding Website popsugar.com

H

ow do you feel about wedding websites? Some people find them a good outlet for narcissism, while others find them to be a helpful guide during modern digital times. Sure, tossing 600 photos of yourself on your wedding website with an accompanying story about how you met is a little extreme (and totally unhelpful), building a simple site to share important event details and anecdotes from your relationship is not. Here, 7 reasons why you need a wedding website, and what your site should include to be at maximum benefit for your guests. 1. Save on printing costs. If you’re having invites printed, you know how quickly the price will rise by just adding another piece of paper to the mix. By directing everyone to your site in any engagement party, shower, or wedding correspondence, you’ll save time, money, and effort on printing costs. 2. Easy registry access. You’re probably

already refreshing your gift registry to see which items have been purchased; why not give guests easy online access, too? In most cases, you can link directly to your registry info, which makes it easy for guests. 3. Your fridge can only hold so many magnets. If your friends are anything like mine, you already have a fridge full of Save-the-Date magnets from friends and family. The side of my refrigerator is busier than the wedding announcement section of my local newspaper. Skip the magnets, save some cash, and put together a website. 4. Change of plans? No problem. Last minute location change? In-case-of-rain info? Hotel updates? While major changes to the big event can make for one hectic bride, making the change on your site takes five minutes of your time. Plus, you can add updates as the date gets closer instead of feeling the pressure to nail everything down before your Save-theDate notices are sent.

5. It’s easy to stay in contact with your guests. Many wedding site templates offer guest book and RSVP sections. Ask guests to sign the book or enter their email addresses to be notified of site updates or changes. Then happily send one email instead of making 150 calls. 6. You don’t have time to deal with 150 calls from 150 guests trying to figure out directions. The last thing you, your parents, or your Maid of Honor has time to deal with is an endlessly ringing cell phone from friends and relatives asking to clarify the location one more time. 7. It’s eco-friendly. No matter how you use it, your site will probably save you cash on paper and stamps, not to mention the trees you’ve saved by using less paper and carbon emissions you’ve spared by not loading the mailman down with a whole lot of envelopes. Whether you prefer to go completely paperless and use your site for everything or just plan to ask for eRSVPs for a portion of your wedding-related festivities, every little bit helps.
