SEED ACADEMY Like seeds, every child learns and grows at a different pace. We believe that learning is maximized when it takes place in an environment that is enriched with in infinite possibilities, encouragement and support. Seed Academy celebrates the pursuit of enhancing children’s curiosity and is committed to nurturing a peaceful community in order to inspire personal and academic excellence. MONTESSORI PHILOSOPHY This proposed Child Centered Kindergarten will guide each child through a world of discovery by providing unlimited opportunities for all learners. The facility will stay true to the Montessori philosophy by emphasizing learning through play, allowing children to reach their full potential. Classrooms will respect the freedom of students by incorporating mind engaging sensory materials, thus growing their natural curiosity. From these experiences of discovery through play, children will furthermore grow to value learning and going to school. 7

SEED ACADEMY CHILD CENTERED KINDERGARTEN Childhood education plays a crucial role in a child’s upbringing and future development. The facility will cater to improving the wellbeing of children by focusing on learning through play and movement by means of multi sensory settings and connecting children to nature. Through the various research methodologies conducted, children learn better by doing things physically, and are more engaged in experimental learning. Children learn by example, and by what surrounds them. Thus the educators, classmates and the built environment effect the development of the child. The relationship between child and educator is important, not only does the educator guide the child, but using the inquiry methodology of learning will really open the mind of the student. In addition, the physical learning environment is seen as the third teacher, it can either enhance the learning experience or detract from it. A classroom that is functionally successful will respond and reflect the child’s interests and provide opportunities for further learning and engagement.

CONCEPT: MODULAR ELEMENTS IN DESIGN An Experimental Investigation Pure forms This investigation was aimed to explore forms created by arranging, scattering, and stacking shapes. Some were arranged purposely, while others were random. The forms created interesting pockets of space, which were meant to be translated somehow into the program.

MODULES AS THE THIRD TEACHER Refined Concept “There are three teachers of children: adults, other children and their physical environment” (2014, OWP/P Cannon Design, Inc., VS Furniture, Bruce Mau Design). Rather than the modules being purely about form, I realized that the function was missing. I started to focus more on the functionality of certain areas, such as areas that were crucial to the child’s foundation. Seed Academy stays true to the Montessori methodology by encouraging self-directed learning, and learning by play through different programs like: multi-sensory classrooms, library, garden, play area, and the dining room. Each program is strengthened by modules that define key moments in the space and act as the third teacher to the children, focusing on areas that are crucial to the child’s development. Modules include: washrooms, cubbies, entrances, planters and reading nooks. Like blocks, the modules will focus on providing hands on experiences to familiarize children with daily tasks and motor skills.

MODULES IN ACTION: MODULES AS THE THIRD TEACHER The classroom is where children spend a majority of their time. These modules will teach them basic routines from entering the classroom to doing everyday tasks throughout the day. 1. Starting at the beginning of the day, children proceed to their cubbies. From these modules, they learn to take off their coats, and change into indoor shoes. At the end of the day, children learn to put on their jackets, as well as change into their outdoor shoes. 2. The entrances are defined with contrasting materials, and different window heights, allowing children to identify the classroom door. 3. Washrooms are defined as a giant block in the corner of each classroom using contrasting materials. With scaled down components, children learn the routine of going to the washroom, and the importance of hygiene. 4. Reading nooks with natural day light give children a cozy place to enjoy a book and learn the value of reading.

MODULES IN ACTION: MODULES AS THE THIRD TEACHER The dining room experience walks children through the process of dining. (1) Starting with the washing of hands, (2) obtaining plates and utensils, (3) receiving food (saying “thank you!�), (4) dining, (5) throwing out waste, and finally setting aside their dirty dishes (6). The folding doors open up the dining room to the patio, giving children views and access to nature and fresh air.

RESIDENTAIL: ZEN HAUS (FLOAT HOME) COMPLETED 2015

The ZEN HAUS is inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian minimalistic interiors. Zen greatly emphasizes the value of meditation and relaxation. In order to capture those values in the space, the interior focuses on elements such as long horizontal lines, and minimalistic and open spaces in order to create a state of mind in which one is calm and clear minded.

RETAIL: BOOKHAVEN (BOOKSTORE CAFE) COMPLETED 2015

Times are rapidly changing, but books will always be timeless. Bookhaven, located in Woodbine Mall, is a bookstore cafe which sells rare books. The design problem was to create a space that will sell the merchandise, as well as enhance the shopping experience for the consumers. The interior incorporates classical architectural characteristics. Symmetry, spiral circulation, and niches are incorporated into the space by combining the classical style with a “modern day urban� feel to create a welcoming and cozy atmosphere for all of the readers.

CONCEPTUAL: MUSIC PAVILION COMPLETED 2014

The form of the Fortress pavilion was inspired by the song Mood Indigo by Duke Ellington. The choppiness of the song is depicted through different formal languages such as rectangles, lines, jagged edges etc. The strong dynamics are incorporated into the design through the informal placement of the wood panels and the sharp pauses in the song are shown through the glass.

CONCEPTUAL: PROCESSIONAL PROJECT (ARTIST STUDIO) COMPLETED 2014

The Artist Studio design is inspired by the architecture of the Cathedral. The ornamental aspects of Christine Kim’s compositions are implemented into the studio’s cut out walls and frosted windows. The folding forms of her unique art pieces are expressed in the studio’s ceiling plan. The linearity of the studio depicts the orderly fashion enacted in the Cathedral. Like the Cathedral, the studio rises in level, and at the same time, the light leads people through the space. The studio is organized into different sections, and each section accommodates different rituals such as: washing of hands, pinning up process work, a place to read or take a break.
