HISTORY • In 1849, Mission Bay sill had a lot of marsh and lagoon. • In 1850, it became an industrial district; the shipbuilding

and repair increased drastically and became the main

industrial, the population of oyster and clams grew really

fast, and the meat production had also increased.

• From 1860 to 1910, Mission Bay was filled with sand,

rocks, and debris from the earthquake. So, it was used

to develop a new area of San Francisco.

• In 1998, Board of Supervisors announced that Mission

Bay was a redevelopment project. It is the largest urban

development project in San Francisco after Golden Gate

Park in 1800s.

• Today, the area is known as a wealthy industrial area

with luxurious condominiums, biotech center, offices,

recreations, and restaurants.

CONCEPT STATEMENT A zzuro is a high - end market located in Mission Bay, the industrial area of San Francisco. This market brings new life to the neighborhood with its simple exterior that contrasts with its luxurious and impressive interior. This execution represents the iceberg concept; the simple exterior, being the tip of the iceberg, intrigues customers to investigate what is inside. While the grand interior, which acts as the larger part of the submerged iceberg, captivates the customers while they wander through the space. The design of Azzuro is inspired by the characteristics of the iceberg; sturdy, fresh, and transparent. It is portrayed by utilizing the open space, strong materials such as marble, steel, and glass, and the uniqueness of each section.

PRESSED JUICERY The pressed juicery is located near the side entrance of Azzurro. This section was chosen because it would attract more attention from customers due to the high contrast between the colorful fruits and light-toned interior color. CONCEPT STATEMENT TERRARIUM Different t ypes of plants that are arranged beautifully in a sealed transparent globe is the basic idea for this upcoming project. The concept of having diverse clients with different backgrounds live together as one in a comfor table, spacious place fits with the terrarium concept. Each individual comes from different families and areas, moving to a new place where they can meet new friends and have an engaging environment for their retirement life. Togetherness makes them united as a family. Same like terrarium, which is all put together on top of each other, creating several layers of different materials that make it solid as a beautiful ornament.

36

MELLISIANI SUTANTO

PORTFOLIO | OTIUM HOUSING

CONCEPT EXECUTION

The design of Otium housing is inspired by the characteristics of terrarium; long lasting, ear thy and light- demanding. it is por trayed by providing the space with operable windows to allow fresh air and natural sun light comes into the building, using friendly- materials that are safe for health, choosing neutral color scheme to give soothing feeling, and incorporating biophilic design to the project to create fresh and calming effects. The layers of terrarium is depicted by using different materials or tex tures combined together and repeating some design in other areas to create depth feeling.

CLIENT INFORMATION LOWER UNIT This level will be occupied for a single man who is an art enthusiast, interior designer, and teacher. He does not watch television and cook that much in his daily activities. He prefers to have a flexible, private space because he rarely invites guests to his house. He loves earthy, neutral color for his interior.

UPPER UNIT This level will be occupied for a married couple, Gino and Maria. Gino works as an actor. He has knee problems due to his tight schedule. He loves to collect wine. While Maria works at home with her three employees. This unit has a high stress environment because a lot of phone and paper works. She is well organized person. Therefore, providing more cabinets for file organization in her office will be a great solution for Maria. Both of them love to entertain. They often invite their friends to have dinner in their house. Having an open space for public areas will be great for this activity. They want to have a light neutral color scheme and modern contemporary design for the interior.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT

67

CONCEPT STATEMENT NYCTOPHILIA The concept of nyctophilia, which means finding relaxation in the darkness, perfectly fits to the client who is an interior designer with tight schedule. He loves to spend his time relaxing at home. The combination of darkness and warm colors represent the atmosphere of nightime as it is the best time to rest. This concept will be portrayed by using dark color material, such as black marble and dark wood flooring. The warm white light fixtures are perfect for this concept to lighten the space and give more high-end feeling to the design.

CONCEPT STATEMENT DIAPHONUS The upper unit, which is for married couples, will use the concept of diaphonus, which means light, delicate, and translucent. This unit has a working area causing a high stress environment. Therefore, the concept of diaphonus will bring calmness and a sense of relaxation to the client. The unit also utilize a lot of glass that relates back to the concept. The open space represents transparency. W ith this concept the unit will have simple yet modern furnitures, light neutral colors, and glass to maximize natural light towards the space.
