I. The adoration of the magi
His drawings are very vigorous, but not as detailed; he also used oil studies to prepare for his works.
He was one of the last artists to make consistent use of wooden panels as a means of support, even for large works, and he also used canvas, especially when the work would need to be sent to distant places. For his altar pieces, he sometimes painted on slate to reduce problems with reflections.
