N TODAY: AGES 16 - 50

INVITE AGES 0 - 16 AND 60+

Today, the Metro Red & Orange line station is dominated by people visting with single purposes - shopping and commuting. Inviting more families and seniors to the station areas is key to creating a diverse and mixeduse district. At the same time, upgrading the quality of the public realm and introducing more attractions can invite visitors to spend time on a greater variety of activities.

Privately Owned Public Open Spaces (POPOS) like Culver City’s Helms Bakery District, allow and provide an attractive outdoor space for visitors

Culver City’s Helms Bakery district also provides sidewalk dining that spill out onto the public space, activitating day and nighttime activities

Existing steps and building frontages can also be activated into public space by adding furniture and allowing patrons to sit on the steps

A Tale Two STREETS: Streets: Burbank A TALE OF of TWO BURBANK BEFORE Before

N

H

AFTER After Burbank has an ADT of 29,612 vehicles per day. Unlike Cumpston, it is an important arterial. This intervention focuses on basic pedestrian safety improvements without altering traffic patterns

A continental sidewalk, pedestrian rapid flashing beacon, landscaped bulbout, and a painted bike lane give pedestrians a place on the street

On our recent site visit our team witnessed two women with a young child attempting to cross the street

43

A TALE OF of TWO CUMPSTON A Tale TwoSTREETS: Streets: Cumpston

Colors and funky edges liven up a drab security fence

N FAIR AV

Cumpston is a rarely used street on the northern border of the station, presenting an opportunity to be creatively reimagined. A monlthy craft fair can reinforce the Arts District’s identity and activate the empty public space
