Welcome Winter!
Michigan winter is in full swing. Is it below freezing and snowing? Is it brisk and cloudy? Is it 60 degrees and sunny? One may never know day to day in our mitten state but we are ready to enjoy it, whatever the weather. While this winter may be a quieter one at home, we’ve rounded up exciting family activities to beat the boredom. -
Fly down a snow covered hill and hitch a ride back up at a nearby tubing hill. Get in the (friendly) competitive spirit with new games and tips for the best Family Game Night. Explore Michigan’s winter wonderland - for free - by hiking a new trail or trying out snowshoes. Visit Muskegon Sports Complex for all things winter sports.
Thank you West Michigan for continuing to support your local businesses and coming together to keep each other healthy. As always, we applaud our healthcare workers, our teachers, our retail associates and everyone holding it all together during the pandemic.

GRANDVILLE PEDIATRICS DR. JEFFREY MANTIA WAS VOTED #1 PEDIATRICIAN BY GRKIDS READERS!
Grandville Pediatrics is an independent, pro-vaccine office of 4 board-certified pediatric providers. Their longterm staff provides personalized care in a colorful environment.
We have been taking our three kids, ages 11, 8 and 3 to Grandville Pediatrics their whole lives. We have seen every practitioner on staff. They are all WONDERFUL. The staff is great and the office is beautiful and fun. The atmosphere puts a child at ease instantly. Debra at the front office is the absolute best, so friendly and accommodating. I would recommend this office to anyone! They also have an open clinic for established patients every morning from 8-9! How wonderful is that?!

5 Tips for
Epic Family Game
Night
Kids love getting in on the fun and it’s a perfect way to interact at home without screens. Plan ahead with these tips for a successful family game night.
1 – Let Each Child Pick a Game to Play
Don’t complain about their choice, even if it’s Chutes and Ladders. Pro tip: If you really don’t like a certain board game, hide it before it’s time to choose.
2 – Set a Time Limit
Game night can easily last for hours, which can spell disaster for little kids. Designate a game time, such as 7:00 – 8:00 PM, so they know what to expect. Be sure to schedule time for each child’s game.
3 – Prep Before the Big Night
Finish baths and get the kids into pajamas before games start and make popcorn or other snacks ahead of time.
4 - Put Down the Cellphone
Set it in the other room if you have to. Whenever you check your phone during game night, you’re sending the message that you’d rather be anywhere else but with them.
5 – Be a Role Model
They’re watching you! Keep your competitive side in check. Let them try new strategies and see what it’s like to have a strategy succeed or fail. There are many life lessons waiting at Family Game Night!

TIPS + TRICKS for families visiting GWL Here are a few more things to know to make your trip as smooth – and as economical – as possible: + Discounts: Sign up for their email list for special offers. Try to go midweek on professional development days for lower rates. Groupon frequently has deals but they usually don’t last long. + Busy Times: School breaks, Halloween, Thanksgiving weekend, Christmas and Spring Break are the busiest. + Arrive Early and Stay Late: Even though room check in isn't until 4 PM, your water park access begins at 1 PM your day of arrival (and runs through closing on your day of departure). Have your suits packed in a separate bag to make getting straight into the pool a breeze. + Paw Pass: The Paw Pass is an activity package. It may be a good choice if you’re staying at GWL for more than a day and want to play MagiQuest. + Pack a Cooler: GWL does not allow you to bring your own food into the water park but you may leave it in the eating area just outside of the waterpark.

6 GLOOM BUSTERS for anyone with the
Winter Blues or SAD (or who just lives in Michigan in the winter!)
If the unpredictable weather, shorter days, and gloomy skies are making it harder to feel quite yourself lately, you aren’t alone. Winter blues affects about 20% of the US population. For people with winter blues and SAD, winter can be tough. Add in caring for little ones who are cooped up inside thanks to cold temps, seasonal sickness and the new stress of all things COVID-19, winter may feel downright unbearable. While we may live in one of the cloudiest states in the nation, we also live in a city bursting with plenty of natural remedies to have you not only surviving but actually enjoying winter again. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) touches many in West Michigan. If you or someone you love suffers in the winter, please talk to your doctor. There are professionals who can work alongside you. 18
GRKIDS Family Fun Guide | Winter 2021
Breathe in the (Purified) Air In the winter, buildings are more closed up and air doesn’t circulate as freely. Plants are natural air filters that can improve air quality, and we have some great spaces where you can breathe in some plant-filtered fresh air. Horrocks - 4455 Breton Rd SE, Kentwood Downtown Market - 435 Ionia Ave SW, Grand Rapids Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park 1000 E Beltline Ave NE, Grand Rapids
ADD SOME COLOR Art is medicine for the soul, and we are lucky to live in a city rich with artistic expression. Booming on the Grand Rapids art scene are murals. These splashes of color are extra fun on overcast days, as the gray backdrop makes the colors really pop. (Finally, a reason to look forward to gray skies!) Visit grkids.com/grand-rapids-murals for a map of all the area’s murals.

FOLLOW THE LIGHT
EXERCISE
Getting daily natural sunlight is one of the first recommended treatments for winter blues. Even just 30 minutes in sunlight – especially in the morning – can be enough to cure those who suffer mildly. Visit these parks or one near you as soon as you see the sun starting to peek. John Collins Park - 650 Lakeside Dr SE, East Grand Rapids
Exercise boosts serotonin, endorphins, and other feel-good brain chemicals which can help fight off winter blahs. Join a local gym or check out the huge list of Michigan Outdoor Fun ideas on page 15. MVP - 4035 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids and other area locations YMCA - 5500 Burton St SE, Grand Rapids and other area locations
Caledonia Lakeside Park - 370 N Lake St SE, Caledonia For more parks near you, see grkids.com/parks.
EAT + DRINK
live hygge Hygge, pronounced “h(y)oo-ga” is a Danish and Norwegian word for the idea of coziness and comfort. Think snuggling up by the fireplace, sipping a cup of cocoa on a cold winter day, or sitting around the table playing board games while snowed in. Embracing winter can mean enjoying the simple things indoors.
People with SAD or winter blues crave carbs to get the needed serotonin boost. (The hormone serotonin stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness.) The stimulant nature of coffee can also be helpful to get through a winter day. Check out our favorite places below for the perfect sweet treat or cup of coffee – even better when served together. Outdoor Coffee Co. - 734 Wealthy St SE, Grand Rapids Field & Fire Cafe - 820 Monroe Ave NW #100, Grand Rapids

ROOTS THERAPEUTIC SPECIALTY SERVICES DIANA OSIPSOV WAS VOTED #1 MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL BY GRKIDS READERS! Roots Therapeutic Speciality Services focuses on the core issue to cultivate lasting healing and change. Anxiety, anger issues, difficulties with sleep, impulsivity – these are all often symptoms of a deeper core issue. Roots works with you or your child to meet the underlying need. Symptoms naturally alleviate when the core issues are addressed and unmet needs are recognized and satisfied.
When a tree is provided a firm foundation with deeply planted roots, its leaves and flowers naturally blossom. Likewise, when a person is afforded a secure base from which to grow and develop, their potential flourishes.
- Specialized trauma treatment. - Specialization in early childhood intervention (6 and under) and infant mental health. - Holistic approach.
Diana has a gift with children that I have truly never seen or experienced before. As a mom, I knew my son needed support from a therapist. I wasn't sure what to expect, but with Diana I felt instantly reassured knowing she had his best interest in mind. Diana is patient, a wonderful listener, problem solver, and had such a genuine spirit. We formed a trusting and respectful bond with Diana. My son has since graduated from therapy and we are thrilled with the success we have seen in his behavior and his ability to have healthy relationships with others. -Sarah
