Make It Personal During the month of April, Bishop Perry taught on Isaiah 53. The truth is one could spend three months teaching from this famous prophetic chapter. In fact, it would make a great Advent teaching leading up to the Resurrection Celebration season. As I listened each week, and even taught on it on one Wednesday, I noticed that this chapter is one that I’ve heard many people quote when encouraging others. However, as much as this passage is great when encouraging others, it is one we should read and declare often to ourselves. We should make it a personal declaration and reminder of what Jesus did for us all because He loved you and me! -Pastor Mel

New Life Ministries Words from our ministries
WHY PATIENCE IS KEY TO on many occasions over two OUTREACH decades. Sometimes when I was praying the hardest and having some of the best spiritual conversations with him, he Elder Edna seemed farther from God than Johnson, ever. It just didn’t make sense to Outreach Director me. I knew spiritual battles were taking place, but there was no rhyme or reason to any of it. One day he would be open; the next, he would be pushing back or pull As Outreach director, I always like to away. It was very frustrating. share beneficial and encouraging articles with you. The following article was written by Kevin Harney, the lead pastor of Shoreline Community Church in Monterey, Calif., and online editor for Outreach magazine. I hope it will give you a new determination to not give up when it comes to reaching a soul.
Sharing the love of Jesus with friends and family members is often not a sprint. Sometimes it can be a marathon. Doing outreach with parents, siblings, friends, colleagues and other people God places in your life takes time and Spirit-granted patience. I have one family member who came from a very intellectual background. He was a deep thinker, a committed reader, and waffled between atheism and agnosticism. I prayed for him, shared my own journey with Jesus, and presented the Gospel to him
!
At times, I felt disheartened, discouraged and ready to give up. As much as I loved this guy, it felt like there were zero indications that his heart was growing soft or open to the Good News of Jesus. Numerous times, I was tempted to move on to “greener pastures” and focus on people who seemed more open to the Gospel. But God kept calling me to pray, share yet again, and look for new ways to connect him to Jesus. After close to 20 years of me walking with this man, his heart began to soften. He started asking new questions about Jesus, the Bible and the Christian faith with a sense of urgency and openness. Over time he was able to think through many of his questions, but he also realized he could never make it all the way to Jesus through his intellect—he needed to take a step of faith, a genuine surrender. When he finally cried
out to Jesus for cleansing and new life, he was transformed. It was a joy to watch! The Holy Spirit swept in like a fresh spring breeze and brought life to this young man. A new kindness marked his interactions with other family members. A gracious spirit took over his heart. His whole life direction began to shift toward the things of God. It took more than two decades of patient prayer, sharing, friendship and risk-taking conversations, but it was all worth it. I knew I could easily have given up. And I am so thankful that patience is one of the fruits of the Spirit. Pray for patience as you reach out to your friends, family members and new connections God is forging. Be in it for the long haul! Don’t give up on them. I remember that God was patient with me. Do you have a friend you have given up on? Pray and keep walking with them? Do you have a family member who seems more hard-hearted than when you began praying for them? Don’t give up! God is still working. Their hearts might be more open than you realize. Keep loving, praying, serving and sharing. This could be the day.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly realms.” (Eph. 6:12 NIV) Guess what? Some days we just can’t get by without struggling with another person. With any struggle that we have with people we are not fighting them. Anything that goes on in our life God has allowed, and believe it or not it’s for our good. The enemy uses it to set us up for bad, but God uses it for our good. First of all, God loves us and is concerned about our welfare. James 1 says, “My brethren count it all joy when you fall into different types of temptation knowing this that the trying of your faith worketh patience; but let patience have her perfect work that you may be perfect and entire wanting nothing”. It is a spiritual warfare. God wants our spiritual walk with him right. He doesn’t want you mad and upset with your brother and sister. He wants us to recognize the wiles of the devil, and He wants us to know that He is at work in us to perfect our walk. He wants us to be strengthened so that we may help strengthen others. If we can just remember what the bible says about dealing with flesh and blood we would not be so angry with people. We are all vessels whether for God or the devil, for good or evil. He has given us everything we need to go through every trial. God doesn’t want you trying to think up clever things to say in your struggle. LITTLE RED RIDING IN THE HOOD SOLACE
MAY/JUNE 2014 judgment of your urbanism. Their eyes, following every flinch. Grandmother, as warm and delightful as she was, let her house age the same as she, unwillingly.
Being unwilling about any change had its faults, like most things in life. She was sick, and had been for a while now. Grandmother did not want to go to the doctor saying things like “The man upstairs is the best doctor there is” and “I believe in my healing, so why waste my time?”. That being said, Red and Once upon a time there was a her mother could not convince grandmother to go. Red’s mother, young teen nicknamed Red, who lived on a rather poor side of town especially busy trying to get out of school to make sure that Red with her single mother. Her could eventually go off to school mother had her as a teenager herself and struggled up until now to some university, and Red currently trying to maintain her to provide for the both of them after Red’s father, being a teenager GPA in high school and boys, the two were busy. melting, like she had been left outside for to long. Somewhere along the way, he asked her where she was headed, and she told him. To Red’s surprise, he was also headed in that direction. The conversation ended and the once, understanding glow on Red’s face turned into dead silence as she walked away from the bus and the boy. She thought of him as she walked, recalling his corny jokes, and her laughing, wondering why she laughed. Did she laugh because what he said was actually funny, or was it because she was feeling like she was experiencing love at first sight, well kind of. She had never talked to the boy at school. He always had a girl around him, darting her eyes at any other female who even glanced at him. No matter, Red could not even remember what the joke was about. She was there. She had made it to her grandmother’s house, with a sweet and sour facial expression.
Red knew the passcode on her grandmother’s garage, the only thing that was technical about the entire house since toasters were invented. She walked through the door and went straight to the back yelling, “Granny it’s me, Red”, hearing no response. Red figured she was just sleep. When she opened the door to her room, there she was, laying in bed, seemingly almost lifeless. Seeing this, Red rushed to the bed to wake her grandmother. After roughly pushing her, she finally Continue on page

came to, looking confused and dazed. “I’m not dead yet”, she told Red, as she sat up in the bed. “Just making sure”, Red said in relief. There was an old black and white movie on, of course, because colored television would have been blasphemy. Grandmother began talking about the old times and how glorious they were, when she was interrupted by Red. “How have you been feeling?”, she asked knowing the answer. “I’m fine, shoots, don’t know why everybody is panicking”, grandmother replied grudgingly. After that, Red never brought it up again, not wanting to further upset her. She just laid in bed with her grandmother, watching the movie. They fell asleep, but Red was awaken by rattling. Sounded like it came from the front door. Grandmother often had wildlife visit her from time to time so Red did not pay it any mind. Soon after, she heard something close. This time, maybe a window. Grandmother continued to sleep, while Red swiftly got up, without her noticing. There was a umbrella near by, which she grabbed to defend herself with. She crept all !

over the house, terrified yet protective. Red had grew up with her grandmother being present for everything. Every cheer competition, volleyball game, and award presentation, grandmother came out of hiding to be there, and when mother was gone when she use to work the overnight shift before getting in school, she would come and spend the night, so she would not be alone. Red had to protect her, fear or no fear. There was some flustering in the back near grandmother room, she ran. There she was, sleeping, almost lifeless again. “I guess it was nothing”, Red thought. “Stupid raccoons”, she said under her breath. She got back in bed, because she was also very tired. She continued to watch the black and white movie, and no sooner than laying down, she fell back to sleep. It now being night time, Red did not notice the small whispering breeze from the nearby window, or the rather peculiar position that her grandmother was now laying in. The autopsy later revealed that grandmother suffered from an aneurism. There had been a break in, and the
suspect eventually confessed. It was the boy from the bus ride. He followed Red and waited until night to break in. He thought it was Red in the bed, because he wanted to rape her, but soon realized it was not. Grandmother was in shock and could not breathe. Her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she foamed at the mouth. Knowing that Red was still in the house, he quickly fled. By the time Red heard, it was too late. Eventually, after going to college, Red moved away and began writing, and she wrote to inspire, so she wrote happily ever after books. I was recently asked to write my own version of “Little Red Riding Hood”, this is what I saw. Many times it just seems like we are in the wrong places at the wrong time, but what I’m learning is that most of times God allows these “wrong time, wrong places” to strengthen us and so that we can eventually recover to help others. Also, it helps us not be so gullible the next time, because there will be a “next time”. No matter where we are in life, we are to appreciate it. Never be satisfied, but always be thankful. So I’ll ask you what I was recently asked, what is your “Little Red Riding Hood” story?

Then it happened!!! Behind me... The airport had a strange noise that seemed to get louder and louder. I turned to see what it was that I was hearing. For some reason the eyes and ears just couldn’t focus, but I knew it was the sound of human commotion that screams somethings not right! Then I saw it! Flying through the airport was a man about 6’5 heading directly towards us.He was running like his life depended on it. People were screaming for us to stop him, and the police was a good ways off in persuite. Emotions were running high as everyone watched and wondered what to do.
