WELCOME TO THE 27th CORK FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL Under the patronage of His Excellency Michael D Higgins, President of Ireland The 27th Cork French Film Festival lights up the silver screen with a programme bursting with vitality from a host of dynamic young French filmmakers. It is a great honour to welcome back the multi talented screen-writer and director Nicolas Saada. Nous sommes ravis de l’accueillir à nouveau ! Cork French Film Festival is delighted to welcome Julien Planté, this year as Programme Curator for our 27th edition. Julien, a French film producer based in London, has worked as film curator for Ciné Lumiere and French movie channel Cinémoi, was Artistic Director for Letters Live, and is now Head of Programme for the creative agency Finch & Partners. This year, our Curator has prepared an exciting programme featuring the best in contemporary French cinema, including Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Oscar nominated Mustang, last year’s Palme d’Or winner Dheepan, award-winning The Measure of a Man (Best Actor in Cannes for Vincent Lindon). Expect also great preview screenings and premieres such as Disorder, featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, and a very special programme focusing on Louis Garrel as a director (Two Friends, Little Tailor, My Friends). In addition to our screenings at the Gate Cinema, the Festival will present a host of unmissable events; sumptous culinary moments in collaboration with Le Cordon Bleu (London) at the English Market and CIT, with internationally acclaimed Master Chef Loïc Malfait giving a food demonstration, tastings, Q&A and a wine talk. Also, a delightful evening guaranteed at The River Lee with screening followed by Buffet Dinner.
This edition puts a huge emphasis on the enduring link between food and cinema, taking you on a culinary journey for supper at the English Market inspired by the cult-classic and world-acclaimed film Babette’s Feast and to a sumptuous candlelit dinner at Ballymaloe bursting with the flavour of Helen Mirren’s kitchen in The Hundred-Foot Journey. Our amazingly encyclopaedic raconteur Christophe Rohr on accordion will ensure a lively festival atmosphere throughout the week. Keep an eye and ear out for pop-up parties at the Festival Club in Arthur Mayne’s and Café Français at Lafayette’s (Imperial). Once again we are deeply honoured to have His Excellency Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland, as Patron of the Cork French Film Festival. The 27th edition will be officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Chris O’Leary and Programme Curator Julien Planté. We express our deep gratitude to our principal funder, the Arts Council of Ireland, to Cork City Council, by whom the Festival is grant-aided, Le Cordon Bleu, Barry’s Tea, Cityjet, Cork Civic Trust and all our sponsors and venues. A special thanks to our outstanding and dedicated festival team and the many wonderful volunteers who have helped to make this Festival happen. Un immense merci, to our loyal audience, for the enormous support you have given the Cork French Film Festival in its 27 year-journey. Excellent Festival à tous! Nora Callanan, Festival Director

OPENING FILM MUSTANG - Preview Screening 19.00, Sunday 6th March / Gate
The feature debut of Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven is a sensitive and powerful portrait of sisterhood and burgeoning sexuality. In a remote Turkish coastal village on the Black Sea, five young sisters live under the guardianship of their grandmother and uncle after the death of their parents. When a neighbour witnesses the girls innocently playing on the beach, she reports this “scandalous” behaviour to their guardians, who institute a tyrannical regime of both physical and emotional imprisonment. Co-written by Ergüven and noted writer-director Alice Winocour (Disorder). PAGE /

CLOSING FILM THE MEASURE OF A MAN - Preview Screening La Loi du Marché 21.00, Sunday 13th March / Gate
Unemployed for over two years, middle-aged Thierry is trying to get back into the job market while doing his best to make ends meet. Life, he learns, is an endless process of negotiation. This means not just taking a job that places him in moral conflict, but having his very identity assessed along approved corporate lines. This gripping, fiercely intelligent drama by Stéphane Brizé (I’m Not There To Be Loved) exposes the dehumanising effects of both unemployment and the workplace. The film is given a special edge by the casting of non-professional actors. The superb
Vincent Lindon, the recipient of the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival last year, gives a quiet performance of depth and authority, imbuing this Everyman with emotional and existential vigor. TAJ MAHAL - Irish Premiere
21.00, Tuesday 8th March / Gate
Presented by Nicolas Saada
Taj Mahal presents a fresh blend of drama and thriller, and it also showcases Nicolas Saada (Espions) as a filmmaker who is drawing with equal vigor from cinema and reality alike. One evening, while her parents are out for dinner, 18-year-old Louise, alone in her hotel room at Taj Mahal Mumbai, hears strange noises out in the corridor. Within minutes, she realises that a terrorist attack is underway. Her only connection to the outside world is her cell phone, which allows her to maintain contact with her father, who is desperately trying to reach her from the other side of a city that has been plunged into chaos. Louise must spend a long night alone in the face of danger. She will never be the same again. Nicolas Saada’s second feature as a director, Taj Mahal was presented at the Venice Film Festival and at Telluride. The film is based on the experiences of a teenager trapped in a Mumbai luxury hotel during the November 2008 terrorist attacks. The topic feels sadly more immediate with each passing month. “I wanted to make a film that was as thrilling
an experience as possible but ultimately as moving as possible, too,” Mr. Saada said, recalling the feeling of release produced by the climax to Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 kidnapping drama High and Low. France, 2015, 91 min Director: Nicolas Saada Cast: Stacy Martin, Louis Do de Lencquesaing, Gina McKee Language: French with English subtitles

GEMMA BOVERY
18.30, Thursday 10th March / Gate Gemma, a restless English rose, has just moved to a crumbling cottage in Normandy with her decentbut-dull husband, Charlie (Jason Flemyng). It isn’t long before her eyes flicker towards a more tempting male specimen – namely Hervé (Niels Schneider), a young green Adonis studying for his degree in a château nearby. Directed by Anne Fontaine (Coco before Chanel), Gemma Bovery is two letters away from her namesake in Flaubert’s most famous book, giving us a coy signal as to where this film is taking us. Posy Simmonds wrote the graphic novel, and this more or less does for Madame Bovary what Simmonds’ Tamara Drewe did for Far from the Madding Crowd’. Gemma Arterton delivers a fragrant performance in this nod to romantic literature, playing out the same old cycles of yearning and seduction.

However, more hardship awaits the family in the Parisian suburbs, as they now need to decide what kind of relationship they want to have with each other. They are struggling to hold down demeaning jobs, maintain a functioning domestic life and look after a ‘daughter’ (Claudine Vinasithamby) who is not theirs. These dilemmas are a common feature in Audiard’s films. The turning point of the film is highlighted by Dheepan’s military savvy proving invaluable for the three protagonists to stay alive. BABETTE’S FEAST Le Festin de Babette
Supper inspired by the film, seasoned with music from a French man with an accordéon 18:00 / Wednesday 9th March / English Market / Price: €38 – Supper and Film Released in 1987, Babette’s Feast is a film which depicts so little, yet says so much. Set in a rural Danish community, it centres around the village pastor’s twin sisters and the French woman, Babette, who serves them after fleeing the 1871 revolution. On winning the lottery she plans a feast to mark the centenary of the sisters’ father, bringing a dimension of fine living into the lives of the God-fearing Lutherans and healing festering personal animosities in the process. Director Gabriel Axel captures the rugged timelessness of the Jutland landscape, and draws inspired performances from Stéphane Audran as Babette, and Bodil Keyer and Birgitte Federspiel as the sisters Filippa and Martine. Per Norgard’s sparse but affecting score captures the mood of the film perfectly. Altogether it’s a heart-warming and sensory experience.

THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY
Four-course Candlelit Supper inspired by cuisine from the film 18:30 / Thursday 10th March / Ballymaloe Grainstore / €55 or €10 for screening only (at 20:30) Set in the bucolic South of France, this stunning film starring Helen Mirren centres on culinary whiz Hassan, whose father opens a curry house across the street from a celebrated French restaurant, owned by Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren). Food and culture wars ensue as the two restaurants fight for customers and prestige. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey, the film is much more than an amuse-bouche: it’s a hearty meal, delicately presented as the dishes in Madame Mallory’s Michelin-starred establishment, with Helen Mirren wonderful as the grande dame of French cuisine.
A culture-clash, a foodie film, a hybrid of Slumdog Millionaire and Ratatouille, it’s all of those things and it’s hard to resist. USA/India, 2015, 122min Director: Lasse Hallstrom Cast: Helen Mirren, Charlotte Le Bon, Manish Dayal Language: English
