2 MERZBAU DESIGN COLLECTIVE | PROFESSIONAL RESIDENCY 2011 Merzbau Design Collective is a small architecture and design firm in Austin, Texas that works on mostly residential projects. Merzbau aims to provide architecture that balances the client’s personality with a modern spirit. My experience with Merzbau was my first job in architecture, and throughout the seven-month internship I learned a great deal about how a firm operates, as well as the design and construction processes. Merzbau is operated by principal J.C. Schmeil, AIA, LEED AP. He shares an office with four other small architecture and design firms. With about twelve people in the office, I was able to interact regularly with everyone else and see what other people were doing on different projects in their respective firms. I was even able to work on projects for another firm in the office Red Arc One, with principal Rick Price. The entire office gathered occasionally for Lunch-and-Learns with various company representatives. I was able to learn about local and national supplier companies and see how their products could be applicable in our projects. Working for a one-man firm allowed me to learn many different aspects of the job, and J.C. was great in helping to answer all of my questions. Often I would be working on construction documents or a model and be unsure about how a space would be framed, or how the materials met, and he would sit down with me and sketch out how things would work until I understood. Both drafting and modeling were tools for production but also tools for my learning. As I worked on various projects and different drawings, more questions would arise and I could take something away from each project. J.C. also took me to construction sites and client meetings to see how those interactions were handled. I had never been on a construction site before, and visiting projects during different phases let me see how the drawings I was working on translated into an actual building. It was interesting to see what questions would pop up during the construction process, and how the architect, contractor, and client would coordinate solutions along the way. Client meetings were also interesting to see how different issues were discusses between the clients and the architect. All of the projects that I worked on for Merzbau were residential, ranging from small additions to remodels to new construction. Going from initial client meetings to permit sets and applications to construction administration, I was able to experience every part of the architect’s process during my seven months. In addition to what I learned from the many residential Merzbau projects, I also learned about commercial projects by working on Nature’s Point Wedding Facility for Red Arc One. With this large event venue, there were several engineers and consultants involved in addition to the architects and clients. I was able to go on site visits, meet with the engineers and clients to discuss issues, model the site and proposed building, work on the construction documents, and coordinate and compile the permit set. Overall, the residency internship with Merzbau was a great experience. It was an opportunity to gain useful knowledge and skills that will help me as I continue my education and go into the workforce after graduation.

The majority of my time at Merzbau Design Collective was spent producing construction documents. Working on different projects with a variety of scopes and scales allowed me to learn how to draw several different types of construction documents including site plans, floor plans, building elevations, building and wall sections, interior elevations, window and door schedules, and detail drawings. In addition to working on the individual drawings, I also assisted in collaborating with the other designers and engineers involved to compile the drawings into a coherent and consistent drawing set. The following spreads show a sample of my work on the different types of construction documents.

During my residency at Merzbau Design Collective, I was able to work on 3D models for several projects. Working exclusively in Sketchup, the models I built were used to help make formal decisions, test out material choices, visualize product specifications, and contextualize the building with the site. In the next few pages, I will exhibit several examples of models that I completed for both Merzbau and Red Arc One projects.

28 CREEK AND FOREST RESIDENCES Project: The Creek Residence (left) and Forest Residence (right) are two single family house prototypes for a speculative development. Model: Both models were used to visualize the massing and materials for the speculative designs.

MERZBAU DESIGN COLLECTIVE 29

30 GOMI RESIDENCE Project: Home to clients particularly fond of Halloween, this project is a unique remodel to a 1930s house in Travis Heights. By raising the roof pitch of the existing house to accommodate living space on a second level, adding a stair tower, remodeling the kitchen, and finishing with Addam’s family-inspired details, this remodel created more room for the Gomi family while capturing a part of their unconventional personality. Model: This model was used to experiment with roof pitches, massing, and ultimately material details.

32 LEMANICS RESIDENCE Project: A remodel and addition to a house in Austin, this project focused on making more space for the owner’s growing children by way of an upper story addition in the existing attic space. Model: This model explored the upper story addition options of the original design (left) and the revised design (right) per additional code requirements for the house.

MERZBAU DESIGN COLLECTIVE 33

34 RAMSEY RESIDENCE Project: This addition of an upper story mastersuite and a stair tower off of the kitchen focused on retaining the character of the 1930s house while creating clean and modern living spaces for the clients. Model: This model shows a cut-away view of the stair tower addition (left) and several interior views of the new and remodeled spaces.

MERZBAU DESIGN COLLECTIVE 35

36 FINLEY RESIDENCE Project: Another second story mastersuite addition to an existing Austin house, this project worked to keep the existing walled courtyard while stretching the extents of the house to make room for more family space below the mastersuite. Model: Through a series of several models, I helped determine material combinations and appropriate fenestration.

MERZBAU DESIGN COLLECTIVE 37

38 NATURE’S POINT WEDDING FACILITY Project: Combining French Country and Hill Country aesthetics, this 13,000 sf wedding facility sits into a hillside on the north side of Lake Travis. Model: These two entrance views are taken from earlier (left) and a later (right) model iteratinons used to explore material choices, formal composition, and the building’s interaction with the site’s topography.

RED ARC ONE 39

40 NATURE’S POINT WEDDING FACILITY Model: These two views of the later model focus on the relationship of the proposed building with the existing site (left), and the relationship between the main banquet space and the exterior spaces (right).

While I was working for Merzbau Design Collective, several projects were under construction. I was able to visit construction sites fairly often, and I was exposed to many different parts of the construction process from foundation and framing to finishes and final walk-throughs with clients. Since I had not been around many construction sites before I started my residency, I learned a lot about how the designs on the drawings are translated to workers and clients, and how much coordination is needed between the clients, contractors, and architects.

46 KANG ADDITION Project: This residential addition began construction around the time that I started my residency, and finished around the end of my seven months. Since I was present for the entire building process, I was able to see all stages of construction, and observe problem solving on the site. Here are a few photos from the final walk-though with the clients.
