Yoga has a wealth of benefits for golfers. If you enjoy playing golf, here is how yoga can help:
MENTAL FOCUS. Yoga incorporates meditation which helps calm the mind and increase concentration. The ability to work with the mind can be taken off the mat and onto the course. FLEXIBILITY. Being flexible can help with any sport, especially to prevent injuries. The golf swing coils and uncoils the spine over the lower body. Good flexibility equals more power behind your swing. BALANCE. Along with improved balance, yoga also helps with stability. A strong golf swing must include stability. Good stability and balance will increase your confidence on the course. STRENGTH & ENDURANCE. Yoga requires strength. To get in and out of poses and hold them—the body builds strength. Yoga increases muscle strength in the entire body, but especially the core. Using yoga to improve your game helps you understand how to use your body on the course. When you find the connection between breath, mind, and body, you’ll find your game has risen to a new level.

Your Success isOur Success
In the winter of 2019, the Fitness & Wellness Team added a new offering, Alignment Yoga for Golfers (AYG). Now entering its fourth year under the guidance of Instructor Rebecca Printen, AYG is still going strong. There is a consistent and loyal group of followers that have made notable progress in their physical and emotional approach to golf thanks to AYG. The participants have endured despite having to make many changes to the routine because of COVID-19; first was moving out of the upstairs studio (next to the Men’s and Ladies' Locker rooms) to the lawn, then zooming from home, back to the studio with masks on, and then in the Tennis Pro Shop during construction. Without Rebecca’s willingness to be flexible, how much she cares for all participants, and the improvement her pupils have made, AYG would not have endured. Golfers, it seems to me, are an obsessive breed who are always looking for any edge. AYG emphasizes improving flexibility, strength, and balance. Besides helping one’s golf swing and game, doing AYG helps prevent injuries as well as quicker recovery when they occur. All this is accomplished under Rebecca’s steady hand in a fun, safe, and enjoyable environment each Monday evening for one hour. Give it a try.
