FIRST ANNUAL EVANS SCHOLAR GUEST DAY
Our first annual Evans Scholar Guest Day on Thursday, July 20, was a memorable event for all participants. With 100 members and their guests, we enjoyed a day filled with golf and camaraderie, benefiting the Evans Scholars Program at BCC. Every foursome had either caddies or a forecaddie—34 in total.
A portion of the entry fees went towards the Evans Scholar Program. In addition, we auctioned off three golf trips at prestigious clubs across the country, again with all the proceeds benefiting the Evans Scholars Program. Between these two efforts, over $31,000 was raised and has been donated to the Evans Scholar Program on behalf of Baltimore Country Club. To cap the evening, we had three of BCC's current Evans Scholars participate in a Q&A session to learn more about them. To the right are excerpts from their letters thanking the Club for this life-changing opportunity.
In 2023, the Evans Scholar Program is supporting 1,200 caddies in college. For more information on the WGA Evans Scholars Foundation visit wgaesf.org. Take a Caddie, Change a Life.
"I truly could not be more thankful for your generosity and unwavering support in my future. The opportunity you have helped to open for me has allowed me to find lifetime friends, comfort in academic pursuit, and the position to continue to lead the way for fellow Maryland scholars to come."

"Thank you for all that you have done for me thus far and will continue to do for generations behind me. I never would have imagined I am where I am without your help. The Evans Scholarship has been a lifechanging experience and I am so blessed and honored to be a recipient."
Varada Maulkhan
2021 Scholarship Recipient University of Maryland '25
"It is because of your generous donation to the Evans Scholarship that I am pursuing my dream of becoming a doctor at the University of Maryland. Thank you for this incredible opportunity to go to college and become a part of the Evans Scholar community."

TEE TIME TOGETHER
Tips for Introducing Your Junior Golfer to the Course
By Cathy Kim, Director of Instruction
Go for Par
Parents,
Start the hole from just off the putting green and work backwards. Challenge your junior to shoot “par” from wherever you assign the starting point. I encourage your junior to start about 25 yards away from the hole. If they shoot par or better, they get to move back 25 yards. By doing this, it not only speeds up Pace of Play, it also will instill a sense of confidence and the desire to come back.
Modified Scramble
Play a modified scramble. Tee off from your desired box, then have your junior tee off from your second shot. Since it is a casual game, there’s no reason your junior can’t tee up their ball in the fairway. This format not only keeps it fun, but juniors love the fact that they’re teaming up with their parent to shoot a team score.
Family Tees
Tee it up from the family tees. BCC has two sets of junior tee plates out on each hole of the West Course. Tee it up with your junior from their tee markers to show your support. Although it may be a really short course for you, your junior will love that you’re playing from the same tee boxes.
Book a Lesson
Have a member of our Instructional Team take your junior out. Nothing excites the Instructional Team more than introducing the course to a new golfer. Book a lesson with me, David, or Jake to get your junior out there and learn the ebbs and flows of playing golf.

Taking your junior out onto the course can be a very daunting task. Here are a few tips to help you and your new favorite golfer have a good time!
MILK WEED
THE WEED MONARCHS NEED
By Cathy Wagner, CPH, Director of Horticulture
You probably know that Monarchs love Milkweed. But did you know that they need it? Monarchs will only lay their eggs on Milkweed (Asclepias spp.) because it is the only plant their caterpillars eat. Ingesting the toxic compounds found in the milky sap makes the Monarchs unpalatable to predators. Unfortunately, Monarch populations across the country have been declining, and one big cause is the loss of Milkweed habitat. It is with this in mind that our golf course superintendents are allowing naturally occurring stands of Common Milkweed to remain wherever they do not impact the playability and architectural integrity of the courses. After several years, there are now dense stands throughout high grass areas of the East and West courses. Milkweed also supports other pollinators, as a great nectar resource for a variety of bees and butterflies. Of course, these low maintenance areas still require annual mowing and weed control so they are not overrun with invasive species like wild raspberry, burn weed, and thistle. But these management practices can be adapted to preserve the Milkweed stands while the Monarch life cycle is in progress.
In addition to Milkweed, adult Monarchs need nectar sources late in the growing season. It is with these and other pollinators in mind that the Club’s gardens have been planted with a preference for native flowering species with successive bloom well into the fall months. This not only provides an excellent year-long garden show for our members and guests but also provides Monarchs with the food they need to reproduce in the spring and summer and make their migratory journey in the fall.

SNEAK PEEK: PADDLE TENNIS SEASON 2023-2024
The highly anticipated paddle season is about to commence, and I can hardly contain my excitement. Here’s a glimpse of all the fantastic experiences this season has in store. Building on the incredible progress from last year, we are poised to witness another remarkable period of growth in our program. We are proud to present diverse offerings encompassing competitive, instructional, and social programs, along with a wide selection of upgraded equipment and stylish apparel at the Paddle Pro Shop. Get ready for an extraordinary season ahead!
At the heart of every club's competitive initiatives lies interclub, where players seek to challenge their abilities against those from different clubs. We take immense pride in BCC's past season achievements and eagerly anticipate another year of championship excellence. This season introduces the thrilling "PTI Matchplay Days," welcoming men and women to engage in competitive matchplay based on PTI, fostering match toughness for both interclub and tournament participation. As tradition dictates, we will host the highly coveted BCC Paddle Tennis Club Championships, a season-long tournament culminating with Finals Night on Saturday, February 24.
This season, we are taking our instructional programming to new heights. Building upon the success of last year's Learn-toPlay Paddle Program, we present Level 1 Learn-to-Play clinics tailored for absolute beginners and Level 2 Learn-to-Play clinics designed for those with limited experience. For players who have gained a few years of expertise and aspire to elevate their game, we offer the exciting Point Play with a Pro clinic. Additionally, our Paddle Tennis Mini Camp series, a comprehensive long-form instructional program, focuses on honing specific matchplay skills and situational awareness. To further enhance player development, we plan to expand interclub team practices, fostering stronger partnerships and nurturing team camaraderie. Finally, we have an array of delightful social programs catering to players of all skill levels, ensuring everyone can partake in the fun. The highly anticipated Women's Paddle Palooza and the Men's Club Road Classic will make their triumphant return, promising cherished moments for their dedicated participants.
Mark your calendars for the inaugural Ugly Sweater Paddle Mixer, an exciting event scheduled for December that is not to be missed. As part of our commitment to broadening horizons, we are diligently working on arranging regional travel matches, providing our members with an extraordinary opportunity to experience different clubs and engage in friendly competition with players from diverse areas.
Without a doubt, this season is set to surpass all others, making it an extraordinary one for paddle tennis at BCC. I am filled with excitement to kick things off and ignite the momentum. Though we've had a fantastic summer, there's nothing quite like this moment. Make sure to consult the Racquets Calendar for a comprehensive lineup of this season’s paddle tennis programming. I eagerly await seeing you on the courts!
Sincerely,
Jody Sambrick, Jr. Head Racquets Professional

INTRODUCING THE UTR SYSTEM
At BCC, we have recently embraced the Universal Tennis Rating System (UTR) for our junior tennis players. UTR is a global rating system that fosters fairness and competitiveness worldwide. It assesses all players on the same scale, ranging from 1 to 16.50, regardless of age, gender, location, or skill level, based on their actual match results. UTR provides an accurate and realtime representation of a player's true skill level, offering valuable insights into progress and facilitating levelbased play and the expansion of tennis networks, transcending age, and gender barriers.
tournaments. As the first club in the area to adopt UTR, our players gain a significant advantage in advancing to the next level of competitive play. We have already hosted numerous UTR match plays and tournaments, including the Junior Club Championships in August. With an increasing number of opportunities, BCC ensures that our junior tennis players take the lead in maximizing their verified and unverified UTR ratings.
Don't miss out on our Tennis Academy clinic times and dates— check the Racquets Calendar on the BCC website! Stay informed about upcoming UTR match plays and tournaments by opting into racquets emails.
Let's embark on an exciting journey of tennis excellence together!
