+ Crisis Speech

In this Assignment I had to create a crisis management speech for the CEO of HealthWay Pharmacies to the media after the crisis they faced.

Good Afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen First, I would like to welcome you all in this conference and thank you for joining. I’m the Chief Executive Officer of HealthWay Pharmacies. HealthWay Pharmacies is one of the biggest pharmacy chains in Abu Dhabi, and in our pharmacies quality means to us a lot. We care for our patients and always eager to deliver for them high level of quality service. Today we are gathering to reveal the truth about HealthWay Pharmacies recent crisis. We all know that before one week a hug and massive rumor spread through the media that HealthWay Pharmacies had releasing secrete information about patients to other patients in its Mail-Meds service. I would like to make this clear. It is not true. What happens in our Mail-Meds service is just a small problem. We didn’t intent to expose any medical information to other patient. I would like also to announce that this issue is under full control and we fixed the situation. We resend and exchange the problem of prescription immediately. To prove to you that it’s just a rumor from unethical person. The rumor came from Fatima Al Seed. She is a former HealthWay customer service supervisor. She was terminated six month ago for falsifying expense reports. Ms. Al Seed is currently working with Al Safa Pharmacy, which is one of our competitors in Dubai. Ms. Al Seed has many reasons and intentions to destroy our company image to able to get her revenge and to get Dubai mail prescription contract. That we are aiming to get soon. After investigation, we discover that the problem is from the labeling machine. The machine printed 2 labels the first one is wrong and the other one was for the patient. To note that the medicine was for the right patient, it’s just the under label was for other patient. I don’t know how the quality control stage didn’t note this before giving it to the delivering stage. But we still investigate and the person responsible will be deal with. The investigation is under the supervising of Abu Dhabi State Employees Association. I promise our customer that I will do my best to ensure and prevent this from happening again. Also I recommend and encourage any patient that receives any vials with 2 labels to call the customer service at 800-3999013 and I will ensure they will help him immediately. Thank you, I’m happy to answer any questions you have.

This memo presents the new dress code policy for our company. After many complaints we received that many customers miss identifying between the staffs and other customers. We make it clear what male and female of foreign and Emirati workers should avoid and what they should wear in work. I believe that this new dress code will solve the problem of formal clothes and the misunderstanding that our customers face. I hope you will consider this new code and add it to the company policy manual. Thank you very much.

+ Business Report In this Assignment I had to write a Business Report to the Director of Human Resources in our company to summarize and interpret the result in the tables from the research that our team did to cover the problem of gender discrimination that female feel, which prevent them from being promoted to senior mangers. Also, we offer some suggestions to improve the situation.

Female facing the glass ceiling Our team in the company did this business report after hearing a lot of female complained in our company. This report describes and addresses a major problem that the company face, which is women face gender discrimination and they face difficulties climbing the ladder to get higher position as men have. Although females are more qualified, they face discrimination in the company and face the glass ceiling. We made some researches that we use to indicate the problem. We gather three figures of data. The first one, Figure 1 is general statistics for male and female managers in the company in percentages and numbers. The second data, Figure 2 presents some reasons from perspective of female executives and male CEOs of why female executives don’t advance into corporate leadership position. And the last data, Figure 3 shows some reasons why female executives think company should increase their opportunity in higher positions. In this report we explain the main important information that we got from the research. And clearly address the problem, which is female facing gender discrimination in climbing the ladder to high managerial positions. And because we believe that our company cares about it employee, females will get a fair and equal treatment as any employee. Also, we offered some suggestions that the company can follow to ensure ending and controlling this problem. All what we aim is to have a great company reputation with fairness treatment for all employees.

General statistics for male and female managers Female managers face gender discrimination in the company and they don’t promote to higher position as men. From what we got in the first data conducted to our company in general females are more qualifies and work more; however, they still don’t get promotion and managerial positions. Statistics that are base from our research Figure 1 shown the differences between female and male managers from general aspects and you can see how discriminate the women is in our company. One statistic shows the female managers average number of years working with the company and it is higher than men with 2.8 years. Although their average annual salary is less than men by 8000 dollar, male got 10.5% more than females and this is unfair. It’s clearly show why female feel discriminated. Female managers are more qualified and have more experiences in the work field. However, they got less salary and less chances or non-chances of promotions. Another statistic shows that female managers have 7.2 average numbers of years of management experiences, which is higher than male have by 0.3 years. Nevertheless, the average numbers of times that female managers are promoted are less than male by 4.5%. This is another example show that we have an issue.

Maha Jasim

24

This is unfair and can cause serious issues in the company. For example, after female facing a lot of discriminations that may create hate and aggressive feeling among the employees, which can damage the company from inside, which in the long term will affect the whole company. And as a large company you don’t want that to happen, so why not giving the females managers what they deserve and promote them to higher position. Figure 1: General Statistics of Female and Male managers. Employee Statistics Average annual salary Average number of years of management experiences Average number of times promoted

Female managers 76,000 $ 7.2

Male managers 84,000 $ 6.9

4.2

4.4

Reasons preventing female managers from reaching high managerial position The second data that we got from the research we did for our company was trying to answer this question why female executives don’t advance into corporate leadership position. We give this question to female executives and male CEOs to know what each of them think. Figure 2 shows some of the result. The reasons according to female executive absolutely different of what male CEOs thinks. For example, for male CEOs the top reason with the highest percentage, which is 82% that prevent women for getting advance into corporate leadership positions, is lack of general management or line experience. That means men believe that the number one reason that make women unable to promote to higher managerial positions is lack of knowledge in management and experience. However, female give these reason only 47%. But in the previous general statistics, it’s stated that female managers has more experience than male by 0.3 years. So why male think that females lack of general management while they are not. Female managers have 7.2 years of management experience, while male have only have 6.9 years. That shows how men perceptions of women don’t change although it’s wrong and number proves that it is wrong. That is the reason why female don’t have higher positions. Because of the traditional perception of male about female, it causes them barriers in the promoting process. 52% female executives believe that male stereotyping preconceptions is the number one reason why they don’t get high management positions. Female believe that how men feel or think about them is effecting his management decision whether he should put a woman in leading position or not. And it’s true and proved in the previous part, men always think that they are stronger and can handle anything. They always see the women as weak and emotional person which in their perspective not good for leader position. What is interesting only 25% of male CEOs think that stereotyping preconceptions is the reason behind the issue. Maybe they just don’t want to admit about their idea to not be gender racial. Also, another interesting reason why female face discrimination and don’t got promotions according to female managers is exclusion from informal networks. 49% of female managers said it’s the reason that prevent and create barriers for female managers. We believe it’s true, most successful and huge deals happen in informal meeting and gathering. And what is more interesting only 15% of male CEOs said that is the reason that preventing female from higher positions. We can see how each one of them thinks in different way and most of male perception is wrong and clearly indicate discrimination against female.

Conclusion In conclusion, this report summaries and interprets the result from the research that our team in the company did. It mainly discusses the issue of female that face gender discrimination and don’t get advance in leadership and managerial positions in the company. We supported our report with data that we got from the research, which are Figure 1, 2 and 3. We had 3 main parts that we discuss; the first part was about general statistics from Figure 1, which has general statistics about female and male managers. And we were able to define the differences and see how the women are treated unfairly although they have more experiences and education. The second subtitle or part was about the Figure 2, which presents some of the reasons from the perspective of female executives and male CEOs why female executive don’t get promoted in higher managerial positions. And we indicted that the idea that male have against female won’t change and they don’t admit that they have sexual racial. And the third part summarize Figure 2, which presents several reasons that female believe why any company should increase the number of female senior managers. They showed how women believe in themselves as important part and winning element for any company in the market.

Suggestions We would like to offer some suggestions that we believe could control this problem and end it. •

Promote more female executives and give them the chance senior managers. It could bring lots of benefit and advantages to our company. If the company wasn’t happy about it, they can simply remover her from the position.

Involved more female executives in informal meetings. It’s known how women are good with creating relations and with qualified female executives that could be an advantage to our company.

Be fair with the salary of female and give them what they desire base on their degree and experiences.

By doing this our company will be safe from lawsuits that some female may make against the company because of gender discrimination. And we don’t want that to happen. Fairness and equal treat is what our company should be known among the other companies for better reputation and relationships. What we hope from this report is improving how our company treats and deals with employees. And no one face any type of discrimination. We know that you care that makes us more optimistic to do this report. So it’s really important to act now before it is too late.

Not easy March 10, 2012 / 10:13 PM Posted by Maha Jasim, Zayed University Student

White papers are everywhere, some are waiting their turn to be written on, other flying with the season winds that invaded the brown room and turn it to a mess. Countless failure tires ended in the trash. Thoughts are fighting and words are missing. Losing the passion of writing. Depression is winning the war. Laying a blue pen among pencils that has been sharped a lot after lots of failure. Another breeze of wind invades the room, but this time carrying a white flower. A silent moment dominates with unknown decisions in mind. What to write, or should I stop. All my senses turned to the flower. Young, fresh and beautiful should I be like it. Should I be beautiful even if I will die in the end. Yes that what I want to be, having a good impact on life even if I’m going to end. Passion is coming back and words become in harmony. It’s not easy, but not hard to optimist soul.

Flying bird May 11, 2012 / 03:43 PM Posted by Maha Jasim, Zayed University Student

Thousand of thoughts fighting in mind, stress is domineering the feeling. Write and erase the words. Again and again, can’t focus, don’t know what to write. The sound of the clock ticking is making the situations worst. Time is passing and the paper is still empty. Losing control, hands begin shacking. Suddenly, a long deep breath is taking trying to get control again. Staring to the sky to empty the mind of the hysterical ideas. Flying birds that enjoy their freedom. Closing the eyes and think of nothing. The stress is declined and the control is back. The words begin to flow and the ideas become clearer. The artwork complete, a great joy entered the soul and pleasure of achievement. Feeling relief after a battle of wild ideas. Released the talent and proud of the results. Always make your mind like the sky and your thoughts as the birds free with no limits. Then enjoy the beautiful feeling of success.

The ladder

May 26, 2012 / 09:422 PM Posted by Maha Jasim, Zayed University Student

I always see the success as a high place that can be reach with a long and unsustainable ladder. Every stage of life is a one stair. We sometime pass many stairs, but sometime we fall and go back. While climbing the ladder we learn and we learn more when we fall. When we are climbing this ladder to success we meet many people. Some help us to climb up, other pull us down. The once who left us up are our family and friends, the once who are pull us down are enemies and fake friends. However, you will be mostly alone in this ladder. Don’t let anything stop you, keep climbing even if you fall, stand again and keep climbing and your head up. The length of the ladder will be depending on you. If you start giving up and feel week the ladder will be longer and success will look so hard to reach. But if you were more optimistic your will see the success so close to your hand. Be always proud of yourself when you go a step up. Never look back, keep going up and you will reach success.
