Midnight Riders Meritan’s 14th Annual Midnight Classic Bike Tour, a 17-mile noncompetitive journey through the streets of Memphis, will be held Saturday, August 24th, beginning at their new venue, Tiger Lane at Central Avenue and Hollywood. Memphis’ largest cycling event and Lunar Festival will begin at 9:00 p.m. with music by Gary Escoe’s Atomic Dance Machine, along with food trucks for late-night snacking. There will be bike vendors and cycling experts on hand to help registered riders before the tour begins and contests are planned, including Most Riders in a Group, Bling your Bike, and Bling Yourself. Fat Tire Beer and Gibson’s will also be back for another round! As cycling continues to grow in popularity, the Midnight Classic Bike Tour has become one of the city’s signature events for cycling enthusiasts, drawing nearly 2,000 participants in 2012. Police and volunteers will therefore man the route this year for the safety of the cyclists as they cruise leisurely through the streets of Mid- and Downtown Memphis, with the light of the moon guiding them along.

The Tour is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities, and volunteers will be prepared to assist with bicycle breakdowns and other mishaps. Proceeds will benefit Meritan, a non-profit organization which aids members of the community by providing services such as home health and personal care, developmental disability services, and child placement. Registration for the occasion is $35 for adults and $20 for children, students, and military personnel with current identification. For more information about registering for Meritan’s 14th Annual Midnight Classic Bike Tour, please visit their website at www.meritan.org, or contact Elise Bone at 901.766.0613. Redefining “Soccer Mom”

By Stacey Greenberg

Hey, soccer moms, ever wonder what it would be like to get off of the sidelines and onto the field? Now is your chance! Midtown’s Over 35 League is gearing up for another season and is looking for new players. All skill levels are welcome.

The league was designed to build camaraderie. After games, the teams either go to someone’s house or a restaurant to celebrate. “We have built great friendships which make us better players,” says Kelly Lindsey of the Kicktators.

The O35 League was officially started in May by a group of soccer moms who wanted more than just a “Parents vs. Kids” game each season. With little more than a Facebook post, over 50 women signed up! Four teams were formed based on age, experience, and fitness levels. SoccerTease, the Kicktators, the Highballs, and the Ruby Slippers played their first games at Greenfield Arena on Sunday, June 2nd.

The next season begins mid-September. Games are on Sunday afternoons and optional practices are held during weeknight evenings. “I’ve really, really enjoyed the season and can tell you now I will be having withdrawals during the break,” says Madeleine Edwards of the Highballs. “I was blown away by all the talent exhibited on the field.”

Existing teams are now looking for additional players, and the league itself would like to add one or two new teams. Interested players can visit the Facebook page for more information (www.facebook.com/O35League) or email Stacey Greenberg (stacey@ fertilegroundzine.com.) The cost is about $100 per player for league fees, Greenfield membership dues, and a jersey. Players will also want to invest in cleats or indoor shoes, a ball, and shin guards.

Initially the women were cautious and apologetic. As the weeks passed, their confidence grew and the level of game play increased dramatically. The stands were soon filled with cheering kids, husbands, friends, and other parents. Anyone watching the finals would have never guessed that these women had only been playing soccer together for a couple of months. “I can’t tell you how much all of us have surprisingly enjoyed this! We were quite intimidated – still are – but have learned so much and want to keep at it,” says Shelley Thomas of SoccerTease. Games are 7 vs. 7 and consist of four 10 minute periods. There is a one minute break between the first and second periods and the third and fourth periods. Half-time is three minutes. Indoor games move much faster than outdoor games and there are no off-sides. The league referee is very sharp, kind, and focused on helping the players learn the rules of the game.

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

“I had forgotten how much fun team sports are. It is nice to see that in my 40s I can improve, skill-wise. Exercise in general, and soccer specifically, boosts my confidence,” says Shannon Dixon of the Ruby Slippers.

Get Fit with Cardio Kickboxing Recently I became hooked on a style of cardio kickboxing called Turbo Kick. This format is a combination of intense kickboxing and dance moves, all perfectly choreographed to highenergy, motivating music. It’s the ultimate cardiovascular challenge with a blend of interval training. My first exposure to cardio kickboxing was during my teenage years when I practiced Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo on VHS. In my early 20s, I discovered Charlene Johnson’s Turbo Jam DVD. Both of these were super fun, and I enjoyed doing them over and over again. I later joined a gym and was introduced to Turbo Kick, which was very similar to the DVDs I loved. It was very exciting to do my favorite kickboxing routines with a group of people rather than alone in my living room. At home, it’s easy to cheat your way through a workout, but when you are in a room full of people wanting to get fit, you will definitely find that extra push you need.

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

An awesome thing about Turbo Kick is that no equipment is necessary. All of the punches and kicks are done with your own body weight. For extra resistance, you can wear weighted gloves. This is also a non-combat class, so there is no sparring with a partner. You simply move at an intensity that works for

12

By Katie Honeycutt

you. Every move can be modified or made more challenging. A kick is a great example. If you were to perform a “front push” kick, you would simply start by lifting your knee. For more of a challenge, kick forward with the ball of your foot. You may try kicking higher as you advance, but you always have the option of keeping your kicks low. You can also perform low-impact jumps. Take the jumping jack – a normal jack involves jumping both feet out at the same time. To modify this move, just tap one foot out at a time. To make it more intense, you can try a “tuck jump,” which involves jumping and bringing both knees towards your chest. As long as you keep moving, you are burning calories! Another fun fact about this class is that it fits all personalities. For a more athletic class, you can use basic punches and kicks while forcefully exhaling out of your mouth to gain more power. If you would rather dance, you can shake your hips as you’re going through the moves (full disclosure – when I hear good music, I can’t help but move my hips!) By the end of class, you will have worked every muscle in your body and feel great. Whether you choose to go to the gym or use

your Turbo Jam or Turbo Fire DVDs at home, you will without a doubt have a great time staying fit and burning calories! Katie is a Certified Turbo Kick Instructor. You can follow Katie and her classes at www.facebook.com/KatieHoneycuttFitness.

WHEN MAN BREASTS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE

MIDNIGHT CLASSIC BIKE TOUR New Location: Tiger Lane!

By Adam Baker, M.D.

There aren’t a lot of things we can seem to agree on these days, but it does appear that most of the general public can come together on at least one issue: boobs and beards don’t belong together. The medical term for swelling of the breast tissue in males is gynecomastia, and it’s usually caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Infants, boys going through puberty, and older men can develop gynecomastia simply as a result of normal changes in their hormone levels, although other causes do exist, such as side effects from medication. The condition may affect one or both breasts, causing them to appear uneven in appearance. In general, gynecomastia is not considered a serious medical condition, but the embarrassment or pain it causes can lead to serious distress in an affected individual.

Saturday, August 24, 2013

Those at the greatest risk of developing gynecomastia are male adolescents, seniors, users of anabolic steroids or androgens for the enhancement of athletic performance, and men suffering from certain health conditions, including liver and kidney disease, thyroid disease, hormonally active tumors, and Klinefelter syndrome. You should see your doctor if you experience swelling, pain, tenderness, and/or nipple discharge in one or both breasts. Gynecomastia may go away on its own. If it persists, however, medication or surgery may be necessary. VASER Lipo is also an option for certain patients with this condition. In an outpatient procedure that requires no general anesthesia, an ultrasound is used under the skin to melt fat. Generally, most patients are back to work within two days. Other patients may need surgical removal of the tissue if it is too fibrous for liposuction, however. Your physician will be able to help you make the correct choice for your condition.

SPORTS FANATIC Jon Duke is a first grader at Collierville Elementary who enjoys everything sports. Whether playing or watching, his active lifestyle keeps him and his family busy throughout the year.

JON DUKE WHITWORTH AGE: 7 SCHOOL: Collierville Elementary ARE YOU ON ANY LEAGUE OR COMPETITIVE TEAMS? Yes, right now I am on the Germantown Baseball All-Star Tournament Team. I’ve also played for the Collierville Soccer Association and Grace Evangelical Basketball. WHAT SPORT ARE YOU PLAYING RIGHT NOW? Baseball. We won second place in the Dizzy Dean Bash Tournament. Our record was eight and three. We are about to play in the Dizzy Dean World Series. HOW FAR HAVE YOU EVER TRAVELED TO COMPETE? We have traveled about an hour and a half – about 90 miles, I think, to Batesville, Mississippi. WHAT IS THE MOST FUN THING ABOUT PLAYING TEAM SPORTS? I like my friends I play with, and it’s a lot of fun. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TO PLAY? My favorite is baseball, because I like to hit the ball hard and run! WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT TO WATCH? That’s hard. I like to watch baseball, basketball, and sometimes football.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ATHLETE? That’s hard too. For basketball, it’s Zach Randolph, but for baseball, it’s Matt Holiday from the Cardinals. I really like him. But I also like Matt Carpenter from the Cardinals too, because I ran on the field with him at the Redbirds game, and he’s a leadoff hitter and plays second base like me. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS TEAMS? For baseball it’s the St. Louis Cardinals or my team the Germantown Jets, and for basketball it’s the Memphis Grizzlies. DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOTHING OR GEAR THAT YOU WEAR WHEN YOU CHEER THEM ON? Yes, I have a Randolph jersey, a Jr. Grizz jersey, a Matt Holiday T-shirt, and a Cardinal jersey with my last name on it. WHAT IS ONE GOAL THAT YOU HAVE SET FOR YOURSELF? I want to hit a Grand Slam and a walk-off home run! WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE A TEAM PLAYER? It means to be a good sport and cheer my team on. HOW HAS YOUR FAMILY BEEN SUPPORTIVE OF YOUR ACTIVE LIFESTYLE? They come to all my games, encourage me, and cheer me on. We play baseball and basketball together and I ride my bike and run with my mommy. HAVE YOU COMPETED IN ANY RACES OR COMPETITIONS? Yes, I have done two 5Ks and two Family Fun Runs with my mommy.

Dog Days of Summer

Compiled by Hailey Thomas

“A dog has the soul of a philosopher.” —Plato H+F readers keep their best friends in shape all year long, and in this Memphis heat, hydration is super important. A dog requires about one ounce of clean, fresh water per pound of body weight each day. Be sure to bring extra water for you and your pet when exercising outdoors – a healthy pet is a happy pet.

Darwin is a three-old Lab/Hound mix. He finished first (dog) in the 2011 and 2012 Annual Fast and Furious 5K. Proud parents David and Anna Tuttle clocked Darwin at 19:20 in this year’s race, his personal record!

Dan and Julie Wood’s black Lab, Finn, age three, stays in shape by kayaking Sylamore Creek in Arkansas. “Finn pulled my daughter and my cooler full of beer around all day,” says Papa Dan.

Luke, 11, is a Jack Russell Terrier and a cancer survivor. He stays lean by running the trails in Shelby Forest, walking in Overton Park, and playing a game of pick-up basketball. H+F Editor, Hailey Thomas, is his mom.

18

English Bulldog Georgia, 10, has had multiple surgeries and her parents Keith and Star Ritchey keep her healthy and fit with acupuncture, walking indoors on the treadmill, and water therapy.

Coco is a three-year old chocolate Lab. Her parents, Jimmy and Dixie McClendon keep her in shape with early morning jogs, followed by afternoon and evening walks in Central Gardens. Her favorite activity, however, is retrieving. “She could fetch all day,” says mom Dixie.

Orvis Ray, a 10-year old Corgi, recently dropped five pounds and is now down to a lean, mean 35. His mom, Nevada Presley, increased his exercise to two walks a day and started feeding him healthier fiber-filled treats like raw kale and pumpkin-apple biscuits.

FUN CANINE FACTS The best dog to attract a date is the Golden Retriever. The worst is the Pit Bull. The average dog can run about 19 miles per hour. The United States has the highest dog population in the world. France comes in second. Dogs are as smart as a three-year-old child, and can understand about 150-200 words, including signals and hand movements. Petting a dog is proven to lower blood pressure in humans.

BEAT THE HEAT (RELATED INJURIES AND ILLNESSES)

By Marcia Scott

Nobody ever said summer in the South was easy (well, maybe George Gershwin and Billie Holliday.) The sun beats down, temperatures soar, and the humidity is enough to give even the most dedicated athlete a good excuse to park herself in front of the AC. If you DO decide to venture out there, it’s important to be aware of the dangers of running in extreme temperatures in order to avoid suffering from some serious heat-related injuries that can develop when exercising in warmer climates. Although they may differ in the degree of their severity, they should all be taken seriously and monitored to ensure they do not worsen.

HEAT CRAMPS

GETTING READY TO RUN IN WARMER WEATHER

Heat cramps are characterized by sharp, stabbing, burning pains in the muscles. They usually form in the legs and diaphragm as the result of dehydration and loss of electrolytes.

• Adjust your pace.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU EXPERIENCE HEAT CRAMPS: • Stop running and do some simple stretching.

• Wear a hat or visor to keep the sun from shining directly onto the top of your head.

• Rehydrate with an electrolyte drink.

• Monitor your physiological and mental state while you’re running.

• If you are able to resume your run, monitor your body closely.

• Run with a partner and frequently check on each other.

HEAT EXHAUSTION Heat exhaustion develops as your body temperature rises and dehydration progresses, resulting in reduced blood circulation to your core. This heat illness is marked by elevated temperature, nausea, vomiting, and headache. It’s also possible to experience weakness, lack of coordination, heat cramps, moist, cold skin, and goose bumps.

• Carry extra water or electrolyte drinks with you, and/or make sure to obtain them at aid stations during races.

IS IT TIME?

• D o not attempt to run for the remainder of the day. You may also want to consider seeking medical attention.

Is it time to move from a 5k to a half marathon?

• Stop running and seek help from other runners. • Get into the shade and drink cold fluids containing electrolytes.

HEAT STROKE HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

• Gradually acclimate to the climate.

• Apply cool water to your body, focusing on your core.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU EXPERIENCE HEAT EXHAUSTION:

20

• Wear loose-fitting shorts and shirts in technical fabrics.

Heat stroke is the most severe and dangerous form of heat illness and occurs when your body reaches a temperature of 105° or above. This is a life-threatening situation and requires immediate medical attention. Heat strokes are characterized by lethargy, extreme weakness, confusion, odd behavior, disorientation, and unconsciousness. Symptoms of heat exhaustion may also be present.

Is it time to move from a half to a full marathon?

Is it time to take some time off of your time?

WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR SOMEONE AROUND YOU EXPERIENCES HEAT STROKE: • Call 911 immediately. • W hile waiting for EMS, you or the person you’re assisting should be lying down with feet slightly elevated. • A pply cool water to the skin of the forehead, neck, and upper body until EMS arrives.

“DON’T FEAR THE CARBS” JUSTIN WILLIAMS AGE: 34 GYM: ATC and French Rivera Spa OCCUPATION: Nuclear Medicine Technologist at The Rubin Heart Clinic and owner of The Refinery, a Wellness and Aesthetics clinic where we offer a wide variety of services ranging from Lipo shots, to testosterone shots, to skincare products by Obagi and Latisse. We specialize in an HCG program, as well as Botox and Juvederm. You can check us out at www.RefineryMemphis.com. FAMILY: My wife Helen, daughter Presley (6,) and son Cayson (3.) MY WIFE LOVES MY… She loves my arms, which is a good thing, because I hug her with them as much as I can. WORKOUT: Twenty to 30 minutes of cardio at home in the morning – I usually alternate between my elliptical and my stationary bike. I lift weights five days per week during my lunch break, and my workouts usually take about one hour.

WEEKLY WEIGHT LIFTING SCHEDULE Monday: Chest and triceps Tuesday: Back and biceps Wednesday: Legs Thursday: Shoulders Friday: Biceps and triceps

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

Saturday and Sunday: Rest and recovery

DIET: I eat meals that consist of high-quality proteins (chicken breast, tuna, tilapia, shrimp, turkey breast, egg whites) along with clean carbohydrates (rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes.) I actually eat a pretty large amount of carbohydrates. Many people have such a misconception about carbs. Carbs are not the enemy! I’m also a sushi fanatic … I could eat it every day! My breakfast is usually always the same, though. I mix one cup of Quaker Oats with two scoops of chocolate Optimum Nutrition Protein and about 1/3 cup of water. It mixes together in a thick pudding-like consistency. It looks pretty gross but it tastes amazing! FAVORITE CHEAT MEAL: I love to go to 3 Guys Pizza Pies and order the Carnivore Pizza. If you like meat on your pizza, this is a must! My wife and kids love Mexican food, so we frequent El Mexcal on the weekends. I usually order chicken fajita quesadillas along with a large bowl of cheese dip and a few tacos on the side. I’ve also never met a cheesecake that I didn’t like! HOW DO YOU MAKE TIME TO WORK OUT WITH A FAMILY AND TWO JOBS? You always have time for the things in your life that are priorities. I consider myself an extremely disciplined person. I wake up at 5 a.m., drink my coffee, read my Bible, and do my cardio. I try to do these things while my family is still sleeping. I usually lift weights during my lunch breaks. Physical fitness is a priority to me, but I don’t like to take time away from my wife and kids to do it, which is why I exercise during the times that don’t disrupt my time with them.

Interview by Amy Goode

“YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT”

M EM PH IS’ FITTEST BEING FIT IS IMPORTANT: Over the years, it has become a way of life. I can honestly say that since the age of 16, I have never gone a straight seven days without working out. It also gives me the energy to do the things that I love to do (keeping up with my kids, for example!) Physical fitness is also a tremendous confidence builder! FITNESS PRODUCT I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: I love using dumbbells. You can work any body part and get very creative with the variety of exercises you do. INDULGENCE: I don’t buy much for myself, but for Father’s Day, my wife and kids bought me a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 5 automatic watch. QUOTE I TRY TO LIVE BY: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) WHAT INFLUENCED YOUR DECISION TO OPEN A WELLNESS CLINIC? I would say that being ambitious is what got me interested in opening the clinic. My background in fitness makes it a natural fit and also gives me the confidence and energy I need to carry out my day-to-day obligations. DOES LIVING SUCH A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE HELP IN YOUR BUSINESS PRACTICE? It’s a natural fit. People are more willing to listen to someone who practices what they preach. MOTIVATION… At this point, motivation is like the Memphis weather … I never know what to expect. Sometimes I have it and sometimes it’s lacking. That’s where self-discipline kicks in! For someone who is just beginning or struggles with self-discipline, however, I would recommend finding a workout partner.

HOW DID YOU GET THOSE SIX PACK ABS?

I typically do abs two to three days per week with my morning cardio. I’ll do two sets of 25 reps each of regular crunches, followed by two sets of 25 reps each of leg raises. Most people have pretty good abs, they just can’t see them. Again, you are what you eat. If you want to have great abs, you have to have a great diet.

“CONSISTENCY IS KEY” BRANDON WILMOTH AGE: 36 GYM: The St. Jude Fitness Center and the Germantown Athletic Club. OCCUPATION: Manager of Endurance Fundraising Programs for ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. FAMILY: My wife Alisha and I have a baby on the way. FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENTS: I’m an eight-time Ironman finisher (Panama City, Florida – three times, Lake Placid, New York – three times, Louisville, Kentucky, and Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho;) 15 marathons; and collegiate swimmer. YOU FIND TIME FOR WORK, FAMILY, AND WORKING OUT BY: With the type and amount of training that I do, it is very important to manage my time wisely. Consistency is key. It can be hard to get up at an early hour, but I find that if you build consistency and have a training partner to meet, it makes it easy to commit to the morning sessions. Right now it is just my wife and me. She too is an endurance athlete, so she understands the importance and challenge of the schedule that we try to maintain. We are expecting our first child in October, so that will certainly change my schedule and my priorities. YOUR NEXT BIG RACE: I am preparing for Ironman Canada in Whistler, British Columbia on August 25th. YOUR FAVORITE BODY PART: That’s a great question. I’m not sure if I have a personal favorite, but people seem to always comment on my calves. YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO BLAST CALORIES: Swim, bike, or run. But mostly, I would prefer to go for a run. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKOUT: Most workouts range from one to two hours during the week, so that would range from: Swim: 3,000 – 5,000 yards, Bike: 20 – 40 miles, Run: 6 – 12 miles The weekends are for the longer workouts, which can include runs of up to two and a half hours (about 16-18 miles) and rides of up to six hours (110-120 miles.) We look at the training as total time volume per week, which can range from 15-20 hours. Being a triathlete provides the opportunity to not have a typical workout or typical training day. Every day is a bit different, which is part of what I like about the sport.

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

YOUR DIET CONSISTS OF: I try to keep my diet as simple as possible. I’m not on a specific diet or nutrition plan, but I do try to eat “clean”. That includes a lot of fruit, vegetables, and lean meats. My wife is a fantastic cook, so dinners are varied based on whatever healthy recipe she might put together.

24

YOUR LAST INDULGENCE WAS: My wish list is much larger than my purchased list. Recently, though, I’ve picked up a new Garmin for my bike. YOUR FAVORITE HEALTHY DISH IS: I was introduced to Cosmic Coconut recently. The Bean and Grain Bowl is amazing. It’s a combination of quinoa, rice, beans, vegetables, avocado, and a fresh pico and fruit salsa. I love it as a post-workout meal. BEST CHEAT: I’m a sucker for anything from Swanky’s or pizza. My pizza of choice is from Memphis Pizza Café or Rock ‘n’ Dough. I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT: I’m a data geek, so I love my Garmin 310XT for runs and my power meter for my bike. NUTRITION TIP: Keep it simple, watch your portions, and drink a lot of water. It’s amazing how much better you feel when you are properly hydrated. WHAT’S ON YOUR iPOD: Right now it’s full of Zac Brown Band, Mumford and Sons, and Flogging Molly.

“MY BIKE COSTS AROUND $5000, SO I DRIVE A PRIUS TO SAVE MONEY ON GAS.” YOU STAY MOTIVATED BY: It can be really hard on days when you’re not “feeling it,” and I’ve certainly had my challenges with getting out the door. I remind myself about how important a consistent schedule is and I also realize that not every workout can be a great workout. I allow myself 10-20 minutes to get going and, more times than not, I’ll find myself having a decent session just by getting started. SETBACKS: My most recent setback was a bike crash in September of last year. It forced me to take a much needed break for both my body and mind.

“UNSTOPPABLE” BRANDICE ALLEN AGE: 32 OCCUPATION: Pediatric Dental Resident. WHERE YOU WORK OUT: Powerlife Fitness. My trainer York took me under his wing with the greatest patience and worked with me to establish a plan that was most fitting for me. ‘Til this day, we are still tweaking that plan to make further improvements. HOW YOU FIND TIME TO WORK OUT: I make time! Working out is very beneficial to control my weight, combat health conditions, and prevent familial diseases; but it’s also a great way to improve my mood and give me a needed boost of energy. YOUR FAVORITE BODY PART IS: My bold shoulders and well-defined arms. My abs aren’t so bad either! YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO BLAST CALORIES IS: Second to strengthtraining, a high-intensity bike ride. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKOUT: I strength-train three days a week with York and do at least five days of cardio. DESCRIBE YOUR DIET: Five small meals a day, with two snacks in between. I typically stay away from red meat. I love veggies and fruit, so I try to get them in as much as possible. YOUR LAST INDULGENCE WAS: A Cadence tracker for my road bike. YOUR FAVORITE CHEAT IS: Chicken fajitas and refried beans. YOUR FITNESS GEAR MUST HAVE IS: A sports bra – how can you work out without one?!? BEING FIT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU BECAUSE: Fitness is a lifestyle; it’s important to me to ensure that I do all that I can to prevent the development of certain health conditions that run in my family. I live by the saying, “Knowing is believing.” When you KNOW better, you should DO better. FITNESS TIP: Move! Find some activity that you love and do it routinely. I don’t enjoy running because it bothers my knees, so I don’t do it. I have committed to myself that I will only engage in physical activities that I enjoy.

THE MANTRA YOU TRY TO LIVE BY: “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be!” YOUR MOTIVATION IS: I remind myself of the family members that I have lost at a young age to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, etc. My lifestyle is about prevention. THE TOP FIVE SONGS ON YOUR iPOD ARE: “Get Me Bodied” by Beyoncé; “Closer to My Dreams” by Goapele; “Fly” by Nicki Minaj; “Under Pressure” by Queen; “Beautiful” by Snoop Dog; and “The Grape” by Ulu (technically that’s six, but who’s counting!) ONE WORD THAT DESCRIBES YOU IS: UNSTOPPABLE!

“SOME PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO GET FIT FOR AN EVENT. FOR ME, THIS IS A LIFESTYLE.” PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT: I have a twin sister. YOU ARE INSPIRED BY: The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama. I admire her tenacity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, despite her demanding schedule. HEALTH AND FITNESS STATS: Since I started training in February of 2012, I am 20+ pounds lighter; the overall combined inches that I’ve lost are greater than my shoe size; I’ve had a decrease of more than 10% in body fat, taking me into the teens; and I have a normal BMI. I’m healthier and happier!

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

NUTRITION TIP: Drink lots of water and eat at least five small meals a day. There is this grand misconception that if you skip meals, you will lose weight. What actually happens is that you slow your metabolism down and starve your body of the nutrients that it needs to perform at its optimum level.

No excuses – you can do them pretty much anywhere. DESCRIBE YOUR WORKOUT: I run 20-25 miles a week, and ride bikes with Sydney. 26

THE FITNESS GADGET YOU LOVE IS: A jump rope – it’s a calorieburner and I can pack it in any bag. Then it’s part of your daily routine. NUTRITION TIPS: Eat protein at every meal. Also, eat a handful of fresh fruits and vegetables every day. They’re packed with beneficial fibers, vitamins, and antioxidants. THE MANTRA YOU TRY TO LIVE BY IS: The Golden Rule: “Treat others as you would want to be treated.” It ultimately leads to your own happiness. YOUR MOTIVATION IS: I put some upbeat music on and JUST DO IT!! THE MOVIE STAR YOU ADMIRE IS: Demi Moore in GI Jane – she’s strong and healthy, and it came with perseverance and hard work.

Stephanie Connelly AGE: 44 OCCUPATION: Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine Doctor at Midtown Internal Medicine. SPORTS AND FITNESS: Jogging (six days a week, weather permitting;) Yoga (one time per week for one and a half hours;) Hip Hop (one or two times per week for 50 minutes;) Kickboxing (one time per week for 50 minutes;) and any other fitness class I can make. FAMILY: My family is Ajay, my partner of 17 years, my daughters Angeline (6 years old,) and Aurice (4 years old.) CERTIFICATIONS: Yoga instruction from the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA.) FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: A recent 20 pound weight loss since starting a diet in April. I accomplished this by recording what I eat on an internet site (MyNetDiary,) cutting out white flour, (but it still seeps in.) This meant cutting out cookies, cakes, brownies (my big weakness,) and finally cutting out cheese; only allowing – at most – one triangle of Light Laughing Cow Cheese a day. YOU LOVE FITNESS BECAUSE: I love jogging because it allows me to work through whatever is on my mind or simply let my mind wander. I love fitness classes because they allow me to think only about doing the exercise. GYM TIME: I work out at the University of Health Sciences Gym. They have a great facility and wonderful classes, like Hip Hop with Mario and Kickboxing with Shennel, and it’s just down the street from my daughter’s daycare. I also jog in Tom Lee Park as it is just a few blocks from my house. BEST EATS: Bari Ristoranti – I love the small portions, but I eat a lot of them. My favorites are the Sangiovese wine, fava beans, cheese selection, radicchio and endive salad, and pasta.

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

GEAR MUST-HAVES: My Under Armour gloves for jogging outside in the winter – actually, any Under Armour garments for jogging outside in the winter are must-haves. I also need my Hugger Mugger Yoga Mat; it’s so nice to my feet.

“I love jogging because it allows me to work through whatever is on my mind or simply let my mind wander.” BUCKET LIST: Going into space (if that ever becomes affordable in my lifetime,) working with Doctors Without Borders, and living in Central London. IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE FAMOUS (LIVING OR DEAD) YOU WOULD CHOOSE: This is really hard … for fun I’d like to have drinks with Jim Morrison. I don’t think he was a dinner kinda guy. QUOTE: “No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn.” Stoned Immaculate: The Doors. I find that when the girls ask, “Mommy, why do you go jogging?” I reply, “Because that is what I do.” Also, on mornings when I don’t want to get out of bed I tell myself, “You need to get up and go jogging because that is what you do.” There is no way to argue with the statement, “Just get up and do it!” Interview by Hailey Thomas. David LaVelle AGE: 60 OCCUPATION: Orthopaedic surgeon at the Campbell Clinic SPORT: Cycling FAMILY: Wife, Jenny (who rides a little,) daughter Kate (who’s been too sick to ride recently,) son Dan (who rides a lot,) daughter-in-law, Leslie (who rides when she isn’t competing in Roller Derby) and dog, Reilly, who is a Pomeranian (who loves to ride in a basket.) TEAM: The cycling team, Cirque du Velos, or CdV. (www.cdvmemphis.com.) WW HALL OF FAME: The Tennessee State Senior Olympics; a Bronze Medal in the 5K Time Trial Race in July of 2012; the St. Jude Give Thanks Ride in September of 2012 – it’s a 24-hour endurance event (my riding partner Matt Smeltzer and I won first place for the two-man team race. We each rode 12 hours in a 24-hour period;) and the Bluff City Blues Century Ride in October of 2012. FAVORITE FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: My biggest actual accomplishment was to become athletic at all at the age of 53 after an angioplasty. I lost more than 60 pounds in the process. My very first Century (one hundred mile ride) came just six months later. It was the Bluff City Blues Century here in Memphis. Liz, my youngest daughter and my wife Jenny met me at the finish. That remains a very special memory to me. WW GEAR MUST HAVES: I have five bikes I ride regularly: a Trek Superfly mountain bike, a Trek/Fisher Cronus road bike, a Specialized Tricross commuter bike, a Specialized Roubaix road bike, and a Parlee Time Trial race bike. And I’m sure I need more! IF YOU COULD HAVE ONE SUPERPOWER IT WOULD BE: To fly or ride my bike like I’m flying! BEST EATS: Can I have two, please? Deli Mexicana with their fish tacos, corn on the cob, and mint tea, and any pizza from Mellow Mushroom!

OBSTACLE COURSE: I fell on my bike and tore my right rotator cuff after riding two years. Two years after that, I developed a left rotator cuff tear that also had to be repaired that wasn’t from cycling. Tragically, while waiting to have my left shoulder operated on, my youngest daughter, Liz, was killed in a car accident in July of 2010. She was 20. A week later I had shoulder surgery and was off my bike for about eight weeks. During my recovery from the surgery I was unable to work or ride. It was the lowest point of my life. Once I was able to ride and return to work, my spirits were much improved and it isn’t overstating it to say that riding saved my life again, this time emotionally. QUOTE: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” —Romans 8:38-39; “Never, never, never give up.” —Winston Churchill.

Super Snacks

Great Ways to Fuel Up After School Crunch time for most families is the frenzied, action-packed hours between the school’s dismissal bell and dinnertime. Squeezed in between is often a flurry of homework, sports practices, dance classes, music lessons and hanging out with friends. The last thing most parents have time for is preparing snacks. Instead of unwrapping a candy bar or driving through a fast food joint, pull out a healthy treat or put together a delicious dish in a matter of moments. For more great snacking ideas, visit www.culinary.net.

For back-to-school snacking you can’t beat popcorn. Pop up a bowl and let the fun flavor creations begin — sweet, savory, or with just a dash of salt. Popcorn is a grab-n-go treat that takes minutes to make. Plus, it’s a whole grain that contains fiber to fuel the body and keep you feeling fuller longer than other snacks. This beloved treat is also economical, costing mere pennies per serving. Pop up some fun today.

34

Go Bananas Frozen bananas are a quick, healthy treat. Cut a banana into four pieces, spear with a toothpick and freeze for two hours. Then melt chocolate chips in the microwave, dip each frozen banana pop into the chocolate until coated, shake off excess and place on waxed paper. Have the kids help out by embellishing each pop with chopped nuts, crushed graham crackers or colorful sprinkles. Once hardened, return the pops to the freezer until ready to enjoy. Getty Images

Mini Babybel When planning for back-to-school, be sure to add Mini Babybel to the grocery list. Individually portioned, Mini Babybel is a little cheese with huge appeal. Rich, creamy and 100 percent natural cheese, it is the perfect choice for snack time. With 20 percent of your daily calcium needs, this nutritious cheese snack is sure to satisfy the whole family. A SCHOOL LUNCH PRIMER Each and every summer, as we gear up for the beginning of the school year, my young son quizzes me on the same topic: “Mom, this year can I buy my lunch at school?” “No.” “Why?” “Because I don’t think you’re ready to make good decisions for yourself regarding food. If you had the option of eating a salad or a hot dog right now, which one would you eat?” “Hot dog.”

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

This is the same boy who knows we don’t typically eat processed meats like hot dogs at home, and at school (if I could) I’d choose lots of fruit and a healthier (preferably organic) lean protein such as chicken for him to eat.

38

Most kids my son’s age still bring their own lunches to school, but balancing the healthy with the yummy can pose a challenge, so I suggest packing lunch bento box-style. The bento box, a mainstay of Japanese cuisine, is a compartmentalized lunchbox containing a little bit of everything – a great way to send leftovers to school with your kids. Try to pack something from every food group, offering at least two small portions of fruits and vegetables each – 20 baby carrots is a lot more daunting than six, and youngsters are more likely to actually attempt a smaller amount of veggies. Lean protein suggestions include rolled-up deli meats, nuts, or peanut butter (be sure to ask first if your child’s school is nut-friendly, however.) Yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese snacks, and milk cover the dairy selections, while whole grain breads and crackers are good carb options. The key is to avoid chemicals and heavilyprocessed foods in brightly-colored packaging with cartoon characters on the box. Rather, read each food’s label when shopping, and only purchase items with ingredients you can recognize and pronounce. Remember the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1981? No? It allowed ketchup and pickle relish, even the GOP’s famous pizza (as long as it contained two tablespoons of tomato paste) to count as vegetable servings, and eventually resulted in what many would now argue were predictable consequences, such as a rise in childhood obesity and Type 2 Diabetes, as well as a generation of children and adults who struggle to make healthy food choices. The tide is now turning, however; national press by world-renowned chef and healthy-eating activist Jamie Oliver has made

the concept of a colorful, nutritious school lunch made with quality ingredients an obtainable goal for a growing number of school districts in the eastern half of the United States, while First Lady Michelle Obama encourages portion control and activity for all youngsters with her government-sponsored Let’s Move program, (don’t you love a first lady with a valuable platform?) which lets kids visit www.letsmove. gov for tips on food and nutrition, as well as staying active, in order to help prevent childhood obesity – a growing epidemic in the United States. While a lunch brought from home is always an option for Shelby County Schools (SCS) students, they are now being encouraged to eat the lunch provided by their school. After I learned of the improvements being made to the weekly menus and school food programs at SCS by their nutrition experts, I became encouraged as well. According to SCS nutritionist Liz Purnell RD, SNS, the following items are offered on school lunch menus every day: three entrée choices, at least two fruit and two vegetable choices (fresh fruit and salad are offered every day,) whole grain choices (such as rolls, crackers, rice, or pasta,) and fat-free or low-fat milk. In addition to the lunch program, nutrition services also fill a void left by working parents or economic hardship. “We serve breakfast every day, with many of our schools participating in Breakfast

By Robin Beaudoin

in the Classroom. We offer after-school snacks, supper meals, and approximately 50 schools participate in a grant-sponsored Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program where the entire school receives a fresh fruit or vegetable snack three days out of the week,” Purnell says. SCS has also implemented a growing Farm to School program, and is working towards making over half of their carbohydrate choices whole grains (gradually working toward 100% whole grain choices,) and baking sandwich breads, buns, and cornbread that do not contain high fructose corn syrup. Adds Purnell, “We also received a USDA Farm to School Planning Grant which is allowing us to plan for future expansion of the program. One of our goals is to get more locally-grown items into our cafeterias, which benefits our students as well as the community.” If your child suffers from allergies or is required to adhere to a special diet you should still send him or her to school with a lunch from home, but otherwise you can feel pretty comfortable with what the kids are being served, and know that only healthy updates are being made. Whew – one less thing to worry about!

Berry Healthy!

By Kerrieann Axt

It’s summertime and the colors in the produce aisles are in full bloom. This is the best time of year to indulge in the huge pallet of rich red strawberries at Costco, and to shell out for the candy sweet blueberries at Whole Foods, but don’t get so caught up in your familiar cup of mixed berries that you miss out on these two lesser-known, but ridiculously nutritious varieties.

Goji Berries One of the most nutritionally rich fruits on the planet, goji berries are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and even protein! They look like small red raisins and they taste like a cross between cranberries and cherries – mild, slightly sweet, and slightly sour. Sometimes called wolfberries, goji berries contain 18 essential amino acids, 21 trace minerals (including zinc, iron, and calcium,) vitamins B1, B2, and B6, more beta carotene than a carrot, and 500 times more vitamin C by weight than an orange. Grown mostly in China and Tibet, goji berries have been used by Chinese herbalists for thousands of years to improve eyesight, boost the immune system, and promote longevity. Eaten regularly, this remarkable superfood can have a noticeable impact on your energy levels and overall health. Whole goji berries can be found at Chinese herbal shops and some health food stores, but I personally enjoy them dried. They keep longer, are simple to use, and are a very versatile sources of nutrition when added to smoothies, cereal, and baked goods!

Goji Lemonade Ingredients

(for 1-2 servings) n 2 Tbsp. dried goji berries n 1 1/2 cups water n Juice of 1/2 lemon n Sweetener to taste (I used one teaspoon of stevia)

Directions Soak goji berries in water for at least one hour to soften. Pour goji berries and water (no need to drain,) lemon juice, and stevia into a blender, and blend on high until completely mixed. Pour over ice and enjoy.

Acaí Berries

HEALTH+FITNESS | August 2013

From the rainforests of Brazil, the açaí (pronounced ah-sah-yee’) tastes like the perfect blend of berries and chocolate. Seriously, that reason alone should be enough to make you try it, but for health’s sake, I’ll give you more …

40

Vibrant purple in color, the açaí has the highest nutritional composition of anything you can eat on this earth. Go ahead and read that sentence again … With the ability to fight premature aging and boost athletic performance thanks to its high concentration of antioxidants (ten times the amount in red grapes,) plus the ability to promote digestive and cardiovascular health, and a perfect synergy of monounsaturated fats (the good, healthy fats,) plus the ability to lower levels of cholesterol due to dense levels of anthocyanin (the potent phytochemical found in red wine,) and an impressive essential amino acid complex with valuable trace minerals, it’s no wonder Brazilians call the açaí palm tree the “Tree of Life.” Açaí can be found in health food and gourmet food stores as a juice, frozen fruit, and unsweetened pulp. A bag of frozen fruit costs less than $8 – definitely worth the nutritional benefits it provides. Try the following easy recipes this summer … light, refreshing, delicious, and BERRY nutritious!

Açaí Bowl Ingredients

(for 1-2 servings) n 7 ounces frozen açaí n 1 frozen banana (or 1 cup of your favorite frozen fruit) n 1/4 cup granola n Sliced almonds

Directions Break up frozen açaí into large chunks, and place açaí and frozen fruit into food processor (or you can use a blender with a little water to blend.) Transfer the blended mixture to a bowl or bowls, sprinkle with granola and sliced almonds, and live forever!
