HOW TO FIND US
55
Ever notice how people tend to walk in straight lines? Not you. You crave adventure. You jump off the beaten path and head for the hills. Or the park. Or some peculiar, unfamiliar place. You prefer to blaze your own trail. Just to see where it leads you. If you’re ready to embrace that adventurous spirit, read on.

DO YOU CRAVE adventure?
WHY YOU BELONG HERE. Everyone has the capacity to think — what’s important is what you think and how you arrive at your conclusions. And who influences you. Or not. Because, let’s face it, it’s natural to let ourselves be influenced by others. But if you allowed everyone to influence you, you wouldn’t be you. You’d be some weird amalgam of all of your friends.
It’s about genes and gut instinct and heart and soul and seeing what comes out of your brain. And if what comes out doesn’t line up with what everyone else thinks, so be it. That’s an adventurer. You have an adventurous spirit. And you belong here.
Memorial university 2015–2016
And that’s what it’s all about. Being you.

If you’re still reading, we’re going to assume you’re an adventurer. And what you know for sure is that you want your ideas to be celebrated, not suppressed. Examined, not closeted. Encouraged, not rebuked. The places and people to help make that happen are here. Right before your eyes.

newfoundland and labrador Where we are is who we are. Newfoundland and Labrador is so far east, it has its own time zone. The rugged terrain, amazing vistas and sprawling coastline make it unique, to say the least.

St. John’s, with nearly 200,000 residents, is on the east coast of Newfoundland; and Corner Brook, with about 21,000, is on the west coast. The people here are as unique as the terrain. The proud self-expression, the kindness, the humour, the character. The refreshing approach to life. All in a place so rich in history, its fossils date back half a billion years.

St John’s THINGS TO DO Shop on Water Street. Enjoy music on George Street. Hike up Signal Hill. Experience underwater life at the Fluvarium, ‘The Rock’ at the Johnson Geo Centre, art at The Rooms or plays at LSPU Hall. Jog the trails to Quidi Vidi Lake, ski in Pippy Park or skate at Mile One Centre. The choices seem endless.

It can be windy, rainy or foggy in St. John’s on any given day—but that can change quickly to blue skies and sunshine. St. John’s has what’s known as a temperate climate. During the summer months, the temperature can go from cool to hot, and even on the hottest day there’s always an ocean breeze to keep you comfortable. Winters are generally mild, with sometimes cool and brisk temperatures, but great for your favourite outdoor activities.

Admissions What you need to know. We have three semesters per academic year: • Fall (September) • Winter (January) • Spring (May) To be eligible for general admission, you need to successfully complete senior level high school courses in the following five subject areas: • • • • •
English Mathematics* A laboratory science* A social studies or modern/classical language One other subject area
You will need an overall average of at least 70 per cent in the Grade 12 courses that are used to fulfill the subject area requirements listed above. If more than one course satisfies a subject area, the course with the highest grade is used to determine your admission average. *Note to out of province students: Students who are missing an eligible mathematics or laboratory science course, who apply for admission to a program that does not require completion of these courses, will be considered for general admission. In this case, an eligible course in subject groups 1 to 4 may be used to substitute the missing course. By comparison to other universities, however, you will find that a Memorial University education offers great value. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING.
You did it! You put in the hard work and now it’s time to celebrate. So go ahead, whoop it up. Do your happy dance. Feel so thrilled that you have to shout it from the roof tops. Actually, rooftops are dangerous. Perhaps try tweeting it instead. And what if 140 characters just isn’t enough? Snap it. Post it. Write a song and make a video that’s bound for viral stardom. Whatever you do, make yourself heard. Memorial university 2015–2016
Happiness is infectious. Share it.

turn left when others turn right.
Memorial university 2015–2016
Or, turn right if you’d rather. It all depends on where you’re coming from. Physically, not mentally. What we do know is that you’ll absolutely not find another place like this on the planet. Newfoundland and Labrador is a place so far east in North America, it actually has its own time zone. But that’s the least of what makes it different around here. So, while we may be out there, we’re not so far that you can’t easily find us. Heck, even the Vikings found us. And that was more than 1,000 years ago.
