St. John’s WHERE WE ARE St. John’s is our province’s capital, founded more than 400 years ago, and today a sophisticated, cosmopolitan and safe city. THINGS TO DO Shop on Water Street. It can be windy, rainy or foggy in St. John’s on any given day—but that can change quickly to blue skies and sunshine. St. John’s has what’s known as a temperate climate. During the summer months, the temperature can go from cool to hot, and even on the hottest day there’s always an ocean breeze to keep you comfortable. Winters are generally mild, with sometimes cool and brisk temperatures, but great for your favourite outdoor activities.

St. John’s Campus A COMMUNITY WITHIN A COMMUNITY. People tell us Memorial is a community within a community. Here you’ll find state-of-the-art facilities and first-rate services. The Queen Elizabeth II Library is equipped with the latest technology and some of the best holdings in Atlantic Canada, and is ranked by Maclean’s magazine as one of Canada’s best university libraries. Then there’s student support. From student services to our student union, MUNSU, you’ll have access to countless programs and services on campus and throughout the city. Clubs and societies at Memorial are numerous, serve a wide range of interests and help students connect with each other.
If the St. John’s Campus is a community, the Smallwood Centre (also known as the University Centre) is the town square. Here you’ll find medical care, stores, a food court, study corners and hangouts. From the bookstore to career and wellness centres, there’s almost nothing you can’t find here. Newfoundland and Labrador has one of the lowest crime rates in North America and our campus security team, along with programs like WalkSafe and SaveDrive, helps keep it that way. Housing Close, comfortable and affordable. ON-CAMPUS HOUSING Paton
College is home to approximately 900 students living in nine “residence hall” style buildings. Macpherson College provides accommodations for 500 students in two-bedroom suites. Burton’s Pond consists of four courts and offers a more independent, apartment-style setting for students beyond their first year of studies. In most of our residences you’ll find television and computer rooms, study spaces, laundry facilities, wireless Internet, and best of all, access to the MUNnel indoor tunnel system. Plus, you’ll never go hungry with our “all you care to eat” meal plans. Students can choose from 14, 19, or unlimited meals each week, plus flex dollars that can be used at a variety of cafés around campus.

WHERE WE ARE Corner Brook is on the west coast of Newfoundland in the beautiful Bay of Islands. More than 42,000 people live in the region and in the neighbouring communities of the Humber Valley. Nestled beside the Blow-Me-Down Mountains, Corner Brook is the centre of attraction, with retail, health and cultural facilities and programs that serve the entire west coast.

Grenfell is a small, interdisciplinary campus offering undergraduate programming in arts, business, education, fine arts, nursing, resource management and science, and a master of arts in environmental policy. Our campus is expanding. We’ve recently opened new labs and academic spaces that are increasing our research capacity. Increased student space means you will have more places to study, chat with friends or simply relax with a good book. Our campus is comfortable and intimate, and you’ll feel supported as you make your way through your degree. If you’re new to campus, we’ll pick you up at the airport free of charge and provide you with an orientation to Grenfell and the Corner Brook community.

If you choose to live on campus, you’ll have your own private bedroom. If you opt for the traditional-style residence, you’ll share a bathroom with one other person, and prepare meals and socialize in a common kitchen and living area. Or, in our chalet-style apartments, you’ll share a living room, kitchen, and one-and-a-half bathrooms with three other students. The new residence complex increased our campus’s housing capacity by 200 – almost half of our students live on campus. Admission to memorial Memorial has three semesters: • Fall (September) • Winter (January) • Spring (May) Because course selection and new student services are limited in the Spring semester, new international students are normally admitted only in the Fall or Winter semester. Applicants should also note that direct entry to some programs is offered in the Fall semester only. For general undergraduate admission, you need to have completed an acceptable high school program with the following senior-level high school courses: • English • Mathematics* • A laboratory science*
• A social studies or modern/classical language • One other subject area An overall average equivalent to 70 per cent is required for general admission. Admission to some programs is competitive for a limited number of spaces. A higher admissions average and/or supplementary information may be required as part of the faculty-specific admissions. * One of either the mathematics or laboratory science course requirements may be waived for admission to programs where the subject is not included among the requirements for the program to which the student has applied for admission. If your high school program excludes courses in both subjects at the senior level, contact the Office of the Registrar for more information.

proof of english proficiency English is the primary language of instruction at Memorial University. All students applying for admission must prove their proficiency in English in one of the following outlined below. ENGLISH LANGUAGE HIGH SCHOOL At least three years of full-time instruction at an English language high school that is recognized by Memorial, including the successful completion of courses at the senior high school or equivalent level in English (not including ESL courses). ENGLISH LANGUAGE POST-SECONDARY The equivalent of 30 credit hours (approximately 10 courses) at a recognized college or university where English was the primary language of instruction. The 30 credit hours must include six transferable credit hours in English language/literature courses. INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM (IEP) Completion of Memorial’s
IEP, along with an acceptable score on the CAEL (administered by the Department of English Language and Literature at Memorial). For more information visit mun.ca/esl or grenfell.mun.ca/esl. INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS)*
A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)* A
minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, or 79 on the Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking. CANADIAN ACADEMIC ENGLISH LANGUAGE (CAEL) ASSESSMENT* Minimum band scores between 50 and 60 in each
of the four skills tested (reading, writing, listening and speaking), with at least two band scores of 60.
English (CAE) or a minimum grade of “C” in the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) are required. PEARSON TEST OF ACADEMIC ENGLISH (PTE ACADEMIC)* A minimum score of 58 in each of the reading, writing, listening and speaking components of the PTE is required. * For standardized tests, final results must be sent directly by the official testing authority to the Office of the Registrar, Memorial University.
