WHAT ARE THE DEGREE OPTIONS? BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY): Designed to prepare teachers for kindergarten through Grade 6, and offered as both a first degree and a second degree. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (INTERMEDIATE/SECONDARY): Open to candidates holding an acceptable undergraduate degree with a strong academic background in at least two academic disciplines (teachable areas). The program is designed to prepare teachers for Grades 7-12. BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (INTERMEDIATE/SECONDARY) CONJOINT WITH THE DIPLOMA IN TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION: Designed to prepare Grades 7-12 and technology education teachers, the program is open to candidates holding an acceptable undergraduate degree with a strong academic background in at least one teachable area. BACHELOR OF MUSIC CONJOINT WITH BACHELOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION: Designed for the preparation of K-12 music teachers, and other professional positions related to music education, this five-year program is offered in partnership with the School of Music. BACHELOR OF MUSIC EDUCATION (AS A SECOND DEGREE): Designed for the preparation of K-12 music teachers and other professional positions related to music education following completion of a bachelor of music degree. BACHELOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION: Designed to prepare teachers of K-12 who specialize in accommodating learner diversity and exceptionalities in the school system. Offered as a second degree.
Students intending to complete a bachelor of education (primary/ elementary) as a first degree must complete 20 prerequisite courses (60 credit hours) at the university level, with the appropriate average, prior to admission into the faculty. Students interested in the bachelor of music conjoint with bachelor of music education degree must have been formally admitted to the School of Music at the time of application to education. Programs offered as a second degree require an acceptable undergraduate degree for admission. Students should ensure that their undergraduate degree includes the admission requirements for the education program of their choice.
STUDENT SERVICES The Faculty of Education has its own Office of Undergraduate Programs, dedicated to meeting the needs of education students. The Education Building houses its own library where students have access to the materials required for course work and teaching in the province’s K-12 schools, along with many other media resources. The Teaching and Learning Commons is a leading-edge learning centre designed to accommodate student discussion and group work, with access to many technologies.
CAREERS Students are advised regularly of career fairs and employment opportunities. Our graduates teach in schools worldwide and are recognized for their expertise. Graduates also hold leadership positions in other educational (non-school) settings and in business and industry.
