RSITY AT MEMORIAL UNIVE 2016-2017
“Memorial Athletics is not just about being a part of a team, but being a part of a community of athletes who are looking to achieve success. Hard work, dedication and sacrifice is what makes a team prosper and being an AUS champion, I can proudly say that this is what my teammates always exhibit. Being a student-athlete often comes with adversity, but that’s what athletes are made for.”

SEA~HAWKS The Memorial University Sea~Hawks athletic program gives student-athletes an opportunity to continue their pursuit of sporting and athletic triumphs. At Memorial you’ll find male and female varsity sports teams in: • basketball • cross-country running • curling • soccer
• swimming • track and field • volleyball
These teams compete in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference with champions heading to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) championships. They represent Memorial University on the field of play, in the community and in the classroom, and do it with pride.
There is an extensive list of intramural sports you can play while at Memorial. The list is always changing, so check out The Works or with Residence Coordinators to find out the sports being offered. These are especially popular within the residence community. We have club sports that are student run but also competitive. These include cheerleading, lacross, sailing and ultimate frisbee.
INDIVIDUAL Memorial University also has the best fitness facility in the province. The Works, as it’s called, includes the Aquarena, Field House and other recreation facilities. The Works offers a variety of fitness, aquatic and leisure facilities and programs to the general public and the university community. The facility also hosts several fitness studios that are exclusive to current Memorial University students. Access to these facilities is included in your student fees during your time at Memorial.
COMMUNITY The city of St. John’s offers a number of sports and activities as well. These include hockey, rugby and ultimate Frisbee, to name just a few! St. John’s is also home to the Royal St. John’s Regatta, the oldest organized sporting event in North America.
HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED IN MEMORIAL SPORTS? Try-outs for most varsity teams and competitive club sports happen within the first week of classes. You may want to contact the coach in advance for exact try-out times. Intramural and non competitive club sports start up shortly after classes start. You can look for posters around campus or talk to other students in residence to find out how to get involved. Students living on campus will have no problems finding out about these teams. As for The Works, all you have to do is check out their schedule and show up! The great staff will help you out and even show you how to use the equipment.
