Penmanship Grades K

Penmanship, both manuscript and cursive, is an important part of education. Neat, legible penmanship is a crucial factor in the development of accuracy in spelling and arithmetic. The physical act of writing requires focus, discipline, and patience of students—values which cross over to all of their other academic subjects. Our manuscript copybooks teach penmanship, basic grammar, spelling, literature, accuracy, attention to detail, and memory—all through the simple skill of copying.

Starting cursive in first grade means that students are learning this new skill after they have a solid grasp of manuscript writing but before they encounter the heavier demands of written work in the grammar school years, when cursive will allow students to write more efficiently and with greater accuracy. Writing at a high level begins with the humble skills of speed, accuracy, and beauty in writing letters and words.
