1987 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK Out with the old and in with the new. The 1987 Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball team will illuminate a new look this season. With the departure of ninth-year head coach Diane Hale, and the arrival of Jim Callender, the former head volleyball coach at Western Oregon State College, the MSU women will perpertrate an assult on their 1986 17-17 record. "We are a very young team," explained Challender. "We will have to depend on the playing experience of our three seniors to help us through the 1987 season." Those three seniors are: Kim Ehrhorn, a 5-10 middle blocker from Canon City, Colorado; Chelle Penner.a 5-11 outside hitter from Aurora, Nebraska and Phyllis Richey, a 5-9 outside hitter from Germantown, Tennessee. Ehrhorn bring three years of playing experience to the team. As a sophomore she ranked first on the team in blocks (143) and second as a junior (85). An excellent jumper and hitter, Ehrhorn made 203 kills for a .217 kill percentage last season. Penner, has been a consistent starter for the past two seasons. During the 1986 campaign, she finished third on the team with 228 kills and 295 digs. A very versitale player, Penner set up her teammates 61 times last year for a .376 assist percentage. Richey is the only Tennessee native on the 1987 Lady Tiger roster. She will add depth to the Lady Tiger defense, as she is a very energetic backrow specialist. Besides her defensive expertise, Richey is a fine outside hitter. Last year she had a .206 kill percentage. The lone junior on the Lady Tiger roster is Nancy Wolter. She will lend her skills to the MSU blocking game. As a freshman, she ranked second in blocks with 127, and as a sophomore she made 63 blocks. A very flexible player, Wolter made 183 kills and had an assist percentage of .434 during the 1986 campaign. Sophomores, Clare Dirksen and Rhonda Kottke will bring a lot of playing experience to the Lady Tiger squad. Dirksen had little trouble adjusting to the college ranks. As a freshman she lead the team with 1197 assists for a .343 assist percentage. An all-round player, Dirksen had the second best kill percentage (.218) and dig total (370) on last year's team. Kottke saw plenty of action during her inaugural season with the Lady Tigers.
1987 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK In 72 games she made 97 kills, 71 blocks, had 136 digs and accumulated an assist percentage of .333. Four signees round out this year's Lady Tiger team that is full of depth and talent. Kara Cronin, a 5-6 setter from Laguna Beach is the first Californian to play for the Lady Tigers. As a senior at Laguna Beach High School. Cronin was a 1987 first-team all-league member as well as the Most Valuable Player at the Orange County All-Star game. Katherine Lehman, 5-11, will be an offensive threat with her middle blocking ability. Lehman was an all-conference and all-divisional pick at Regina Dominician High School in Wilmette, III. Sarah Tjelemland, a 6-0 hitter from Springfield, III., will lend her talents as a middle hitter for the Lady Tigers. While attending Rochester High School, Tjelemland was an all-conference selection both her junior and senior years. Rounding out the new freshman class is Marie Zwolinski, a 5-10 outside hitter from Tucson, Ariz. Zwolinski has already established herself as an offensive threat with her fine hitting ability. "This year's schedule is the toughest ever played by a Memphis State team," explained Callender. "But, if we are going to get ranked in the top 20, we are going to have to play and beat some of the top teams on our schedule." The Lady Tigers will face two top ten teams, Texas and Brigham Young. As well, the MSU women will find themselves up against four top 25 team: Houston, Rice, Idaho State and Texas-Arlington. Also on the team's schedule is the University of California-Riverside, a NCAA division two Final Four competitor. In Metro Conference competition, the Lady Tigers will play host to Louisville, Cincinnati and defending Metro Conference Champion, Florida State. The MSU women will be on the road for their bouts with Virginia Tech, Southern Mississippi and South Carolina. "We have established four goals this season," Callender explained. "First, to regain a Metro Conference Championship; second, to represent our school in the NCAA Tournament; third, to achieve excellence in the classroom; and, last, to have a great time growing together as a team." A new coach, a new game plan, a tough new schedule, and new attitude toward perpetuating a winning tradition. With all these ingredients, the 1987 Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball team is well on the way to it's goals.

VOLLEYBALL RULES & REGULATIONS Ace: A serve which directly results in a point because the receiving team is unable to keep the ball in play. Assist: A set which is spiked for a point or side out; the assist is credited to the player setting the ball to the spiker. Attack Pet.: A measure of a spiker's hitting effectiveness which is somewhat akin to a baseball batting average; it is derived by subtracting the number of errors from the number of kills, and dividing that by the number of spiking attempts. A .275 attack pet is excellent while a .350 or above is outstanding. Block Solo: A player solely responsible for blocking the ball onto the opponent's court (or off an opposing player) for a point or sideout is credited with a block solo; if two players are jointly responsible for the block, they are each credited with a Block Assist.

99 Double Hit

Cross Court Spike: A diagonal spike (left to right or right to left) aimed towards the corner of the opponent's court which is farthest from the spiker. Dig: A save (keeping the ball in play) of a spiked or blocked ball Free Ball: A ball directed into the opponent's court without being forcefully attacked. Used to keep the rally alive when a spike is impossible. Five-One Offense: The predominant offense in collegiate volleyball which consists of five hitters and one setter, who sets all good passes, Kill: A spike which results in a point or side out. Line Spike: A spike aimed down the opponent's sideline. Off Speed Shot: A ball which is spiked with only a fraction of the force typically used for a spike. Occasional use of an off speed shot can be effective because it throws off defenders' timing—the defenders typically expect a fall-strength spike.
Substitution
Double Foul/Play Over
One On One Block: Only one blacker faces the spiker, who therefore has an excellent chance for a kill. Some offensive plays are specifically designed to isolate a hitter in a one-on-one situation. Tip: Touching the ball with one hand onto the opponent's court; mainly used to force defenders to cover court areas instead of keying on forceful attacks. Turning The Ball In: A technique used by the outside blocker to keep a spiked ball from going out of bounds.
Position Foul
End of Game or Match
Wipe Off Shot: A ball which is intentionally spiked off the Mocker's hands at such an angle that it will land out of bounds.
