1991 Season Preview After a Metro Conference regular season title, a semi-final finish at the Women's Invitational Volleyball Championship, and six returning letter winners including three starters, the "SKY'S THE LIMIT' for the Memphis State Lady Tiger volleyball team. Last season was a dream year for the Lady Tigers. Their determination and work ethic played a big part in their success. As well, the team's chemistry, even greater than its talent, attributed to many of the squad's victories. Gone from the 1990 Lady Tiger squad that went 10-0 at home and 7-0 in the Metro Conference are seniors Katherine Lehman, Sarah Tjelmeland, Rhonda Kottke and Marie Zwolinski. Kottke was a WIVC All-Tournament selection and a three-tune All-Metro Conference honoree. Lehman was a two-time All-Metro Conference and Metro All-Tournament selection. Tjelmeland earned Metro All-Tournament honors. As well, Kottke, Tjelmeland and Lehman helped MSU fans helped lift the Lady Tigers to rewrite the Lady Tiger record books. numerous victories The seniors were the nucleus of the squad. They handled 70 percent of on court duties and were the team's chief threats. However, someone from this year's team is going to have to step up and take a leadership role if the Lady Tigers are going to be successful. The Lady Tigers have not only six new faces on the squad but will have a new look as they join a new conference, the Great Midwest, which features St. Louis, Marquette, DePaul, Alabama-Birmingham, and Cincinnati. As well, MSU has hired a former Tiger ... a Baton Rouge Tiger from Louisiana State to lead the team, Penny Lucas-White. A 1985 U.S. National Team member, Lucas-White has spent five years playing professional volleyball in Europe. From 1987-89 she was the assistant coach of the Auburn Lady Tiger volleyball program. During her three years at Auburn the Tigers compiled a 63-47 record, including back-to-back 20-win seasons (25-12 in 1988 and 21-14 in 1989). The nucleus of the team will center around senior setter Alisande Cavanagh. A transfer from Southwest Texas State, Cavanagh ran the Lady Tiger offense with authority. She completed the year with 1,511 assists which ranks third on the Lady Tiger's single season assist chart. Only a freshman, outside hitter Amy Greer earned a starting role for the Lady Tigers. She was the team's third leading hitter averaging 2.31 kills per game. She earned Graphic Systems Classic all-Tournament honors. Greer made her presence known against such top-ranked teams as Arkansas State when she had a season-high 22 kills, and Florida State when she served five aces. Greer will have a leadership role this season, and Lucas-White will be counting on her to have a better accuracy rate on the offensive attack Splitting starting time were seniors Lori Rembe and Kim Lemon. Lemon started 24 of 39 matches as a backcourt specialist. Her speed and serving ability were major contributors to the Lady Tiger cause. Rembe an outside hitter-middle blocker, was the Lady Tiger's second leading hitter (.263). That hitting percentage ranks as the sixth best in a single season by a Lady Tiger. Rembe also averaged 2.09 kills per game. Kim is going to be a real focal point for the Lady Tigers this season. She worked real hard this past spring at the middle hitter position and has made massive amounts of improvement. One of single most dominant players on the Lady Tiger squad is Rembe, a 6-3 middle hitter. Rembe, is very capable of dominating the net as well as making the Lady Tiger offense a force to be reckoned with. Two other very capable players return to the Lady Tiger lineup: Sami Randolph, a 5-7 sophomore back court specialist and Lisa Rembe, a 6-3 senior outside hitter. Randolph is very capable of dominating both the back and front courts. Sami made as much progress as any player from last year's team. The coaching staff is counting on her to come back in good shape. Randolph could see more playing time as she is a very versatile player. Rembe, the twin sister of Lori, saw limited action last season. In the seven matches that Rembe participated, she hit an impressive .260 percent. A three-sport letter winner in 1989 (she participated on the Lady Tiger volleyball, basketball and track teams), Rembe spent the 1990-91 year concentrating on her volleyball career. However, she and her sister continued their domination of the Lady Tiger track field events, setting numerous school records. Lucas-White is optimistic about her newcomers: Lisa Bray, Cherilyn Bright, Lady Tiger offensive coordinator, setter Alisande Cavanagh Renee Ross, Jamie Runkle, Chris Lemon and Analise Navia.

The team's second leading hitter, senior Lori Rembe

Outside hitter Amy Greer, started in 1990 as a freshman

The 1991 newcomer class is considered one of the best groups to ever sign at Memphis State. They are all great athletes and can make things happen. They will definitely improve the team's speed. Lisa Bray, a native Memphian, played her prep career at Braircrest High School. The 5-7 setter helped lead her junior and senior teams to the Tennessee State title. She was a two-time all-District selection, and earned all-Tournament honors at both the district and regional tournaments as a senior. Bray also earned all-Metro and all-Regional honors. She averaged 4.13 kills, 1.7 blocks and 8.67 assists per game. One thing about Lisa that stands out, is the fact that she is a winner. You can't teach a player how to win, and every team Bray has played on, both basketball and volleyball, has been a winner. She is a tremendous athlete, but she will have a lot to learn. A native of Wheaton, 111., Bright led both her junior and senior Wheaton High teams in kills. This past season she had a team-high 223 kills and ranked third in aces with 29. She was an All-Conference and honorable mention All-State selection in 1990. Bright is a tremendous athlete. As a volleyball player, she is a little raw, not as polished, but she has a lot of potential and could be a great player for the Lady Tigers. One newcomer that assistant coach Angie Buchanan was excited about signing was 5-9 outside hitter Renee Ross. The Marion, Iowa, native led her Linn Marr team to its first-ever district championship this past fall. She ranked as one of the state leaders in kill average (4.6) and kill effiency (.338). Not only an excellent hitter, Ross has a 94 percent serving accuracy and a 92 percent passing effiency rate. Runkle led her Peru (Ind.) High team to a 31-4 record en route to a conference championship as well as a final eight finish in the Indiana State Tournament. The 5-7 outside hitter had an imprssive .448 kill percentage and 328 digs. She holds school record in total attacks (1274), digs (952), kills (620) and kill percentage (.389). She earned first team All-State and All-Conference honors this past season. A walk-on, Lemon is the sister of senior Lady Tiger Kim. As a senior at Riverside-Brookfield High in Brookfield, 111., Lemon was selection as one of top 50 players in the state by both The Chicago Tribune and Chicagoland Sun. Her Chicagoland junior team ranks fifth in the nation. The Lady Tiger squad sports a lot family tradition with the two Rembe twins, the Lemon sisters and walk-on Analise Navia, who is the sister of Tiger defensive back, Roberto. Navia transferred to MSU from California Baptist College. In 1989 her CBC team won its conference championship and placed second in the district. At the Junior College National Championships, Navia and her teammates finished fifth. Outside hitters, middle hitters, setters and back court specialists. All the ingredients are ready for Lucas-White to mix and match. One ingredient that will cause some trouble for the 1991 Lady Tigers is the schedule and its new conference membership. This season Memphis State will participate in the Great Midwest Conference. A regular season round robin will be highlighted with a conference championship tournament in Memphis, Nov. 22-23. The winner of the Great Midwest tournament will receive an automatic bid into the National Invitational Volleyball Championship in Dayton, Ohio. In regard to this schedule the coaching staff feels that it is as rugged as any Lady Tiger Eeam has faced. The team opens the season at the Bulldog Classic in Athens, Ga., and then face such top caliber competition as Rhode Island, Southern California and Wisconsin at the Volleyball Monthly Invitational in Madison, Wis. When the Lady Tigers open their season, they are going have to be ready to play. There are no light spots on their schedule, and it will make the young players work hard. The schedule win let the players know from the start what to expect, and hopefully make them hungry for the future. For Lucas-White and her Lady Tigers the 1991 volleyball outlook is partly cloudy with clearing skies possible.

1990 Season In Review

18

When Mike Lingenfelter looked at his team's statistics on Sept. 11, he had to look twice at his team's record, as it was 3-4. The loss that discouraged Lingenfelter the most was the one to Mississippi State on Sept.ll, 15-7,2-15,13-15,4-15, in Starkville, Miss. After the Mississippi State match, the Lady Tigers sat down at practice and talked a long time about their goals for the season. They decided to work even harder and extended their practice time to over three hours." Those three-hour-plus practices must have been the answer as the Lady Tigers ripped off a 15-game win streak, which set a new school record for most consecutive wins in a season. The team began its win streak on Sept. 14, when MSU beat Middle Tennessee State, 15-3,15-4,16-14, in the opening round of the Graphic Systems Classic. During the championship match, MSU bombed Western Kentucky, 15-4,15-8,15-12. Seniors Rhonda Kottke and Katherine Lehman, along with freshman Amy Greer earned all-tournament honors. Not a traditionally good road team, the Lady Tigers packed their bags and headed to Evansville, Ind., where they participated in the Evansville Invitational. At that tournament MSU fans led a helping hand to MSU continued to control each match, sweeping Evansville, Ball State and Morehead State the Lady Tigers in three-game matches. With their record now at 8-4, the Lady Tigers had not lost a single game in then4 last six matches and were now receiving votes in the South Region Top 15 Poll. The team's biggest challenge, since their Sept. 1 win over 1989 Final Four participate Texas-Arlington, occurred on Sept. 25 when they faced Arkansas State. Alway a tough match, the Lady Tigers held on to beat the Lady Indians in a grueling five-game match, 15-8,6-15,15-9,17-19,15-8. After the Arkansas State match, the Lady Tigers' schedule did not get any easier as they faced Missouri and regionally ranked Northern Iowa on the road. When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and that is exactly what the Lady Tigers did as they beat Missouri, 3-1, and Northern Iowa 3-2. The UNI match was a homecoming of sorts for two Lady Tigers, as it was played in Springfield, 111., the home of senior outside hitter Sarah Tjelmeland and junior setter Alisande Cavanagh. The Lady Tigers then opened their 1990 Metro Conference schedule on Oct. 5-6 and extended the win streak with wins over Tulane (3-1) and Southern Mississippi (3-1). On Oct. 13, Memphis State faced conference foe Florida State in a critical match, as MSU had not beaten the Lady Seminoles in a decade. During the 1989 match, MSU had a two-game lead over the Lady Seminoles but lost the final three games. The 1990 match turned out the complete opposite of the 1989 meeting. The Lady Tigers lost the first two game, 14-16,11-15, but won the final three games 15-8, 15-8,15-11. The win over FSU proved to be a landmark victory as it broke the Lady Seminoles' 31-match Metro win steak. All good things must come to an end however, as did the Lady Tigers' win streak. The Lady Tigers of Auburn University pounced on MSU, 15-7,12-15,10-15,15-17 in Auburn, Ala., on Oct. 19. Now ranked llth in the South Region, the Lady Tigers completed their toughest Metro task, beating 10th ranked Louisville (3-0) and Cincinnati (3-0). The win over UC was the team's final home game of the season and marked the first time the Lady Tigers had gone undefeated at home with a 10-0 record. For the first time ever, the Lady Tigers captured the regular season Metro Conference championship, as they completed their 1990 conference schedule with wins over South Carolina and Virginia Tech to finish with an unblemished Metro mark of 7-0. The Lady Tigers ended the regular season on a low note, losing to Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss., 14-16,15-17,11-15. At the year-end Metro Conference Tournament banquet, Lehman, Kottke and Cavanagh all earned all-Metro Conference honors. This marked the third consecutive year Kottke had earned this honor and it was the second consecutive year for Lehman. As the top seed at the Metro Conference Championship Tournament, the Lady Tigers played eighth seeded Southern Mississippi in the opening round. The Memphis State won that match 3-1, and faced fourth Lady Tigers and fans celebrate after beating Florida State seeded Cincinnati, a team that they had lost to three consecutive times at the Metro Tournament.

1990 Season In Review

An ailing Lady Tigers team was able to sweep the Lady Bearcats, 15-10,15-4,15-5 and earned an appearance in the championship. Host team Louisville, the tournament's third seed, upset second-seeded Florida State, 3-2, in the semi-finals. The Lady Tigers and the Lady Cardinals were sure to have a battle in the championship. On Nov. 17, all was not well for Lingenfelter and his Lady Tiger troops. Tjelmeland, the team's second leading hitter, and 6-3 middle hitter Lori Rembe were stricken with a stomach virus and despite a tough battle, the Lady Tigers fell to Louisville, 15-13, 9-15, 3-15, 7-15. Tjelmeland and Lehman earned all-tournament honors. Despite the championship loss to Louisville, the Lady Tigers earned a bid into the prestigious Women's Invitational Volleyball Championships held in Knoxville, Tenn., Nov. 29 - Dec. 1. In that 20-team tournament, the Lady Tigers earned the top seed of the "D" Pool, which featured Arizona State, Dayton, Loyola Marymount and William & Mary. Setter Alisande Cavanagh In opening round action, MSU downed William & Mary, 15-4,15-1,11-15,15-10. earned all-Metro Conference honors However, the team ran into a hard hitting, tough defensive Loyola Marymount team in round two and lost, 15-10,15-2,18-16. On the second day of round robin competition, the Lady Tigers faced Dayton and swept that match, 15-8,15-10,15-3. Arizona State, the Lady Tiger's final pool competitor had fallen to Loyola Marymount, 15-13,12-15,15-11,12-15,10-15. For Memphis State to advance to the semi-final round, they would need some help from William & Mary, Loyola Marymounts' final challenger. As well, the Lady Tigers would have to beat Arizona State. When the team arrived back at Stokely Athletic Center to play Arizona State, much to then- surprise, William & Mary had edged the Lady Lions, 15-9,9-15,15-11,8-15, 15-13. Bring on the Lady Devils. Memphis State took game one from Arizona State, 15-8. Game two was all ASU, 15-3, and in game three the Lady Sun Devils edged MSU, 16-14. As they had done many times before, the Lady Tigers came back and won game four, 16-14. Rally scoring was used in game five, and the Lady Tigers fell behind 14-11 before Lingenfelter called timeout to steady his troop. MSU came back and tied the score at 14-14, before Lehman nailed a kill and freshman Greer served an ace to seal the victory. Lehman was a two-time all-Metro Conference pick In the semi-final match, MSU would face a red-hot Houston team. The Lady Cougars had not lost a match in Knoxville, and had gone no more than four games in each of their round robin matches. After winning game one, 15-12, the Lady Tigers let game two slip away, 14-16. That loss took a toll on the Lady Tigers as they dropped the final two games, 15-3,15-4. The Lady Cougars went on to win the tournament, 15-4, 15-12,6-15,15-6 over Cal State Northridge. The Lady Tiger's final record of 30-9 is the most wins by a Lady Tiger team since the 1980 season, when Memphis State finished 41-17 and participated in the AIAW Region II Tournament.

The Great Midwest Conference Innovation and creativity are the hallmarks of the Great Midwest Conference, America's newest NCAA, Division I athletics conference. Formed in November, 1990, the Great Midwest joins six institutions with prestigious academic and athletic traditions. The 1991-92 academic year marks the first season of athletic competition for the new league. Members the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, Marquette University, Memphis State University and Saint Louis University will compete for the first title in each of the conference's 13 championship sports. The league's first championships are the men's and women's cross country events, scheduled for November, 1991 in Milwaukee, Wis., with Marquette serving as host. Other fall conference sports are volleyball and soccer. The 1991 volleyball championship will be hosted by Memphis State and Saint Louis host the first soccer championships. Other conference sports are men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track, men's and women's tennis, men's golf and men's baseball. The Great Midwest promises to be an exciting conference in all sports. Two member volleyball teams qualified for postseason action in 1990. The league saw four men's basketball team and two women's squads earn postseason trips. One conference member made postseason and another qualfied in soccer. There also was plenty of academic success. Five conference athletes earned GTE Academic Ail-American honors. Two others were honored on the district level. That academic success should continue. The Great Midwest is committed to academic integrity and maintains stringent guidelines regarding initial and continuing eligibility. Great Midwest institutions are more than athletic rivals. The league is developing an academic consortium to allow students enrolled in one instituion to attend one of the other five while earning credit at the original institution. Consortium plans also include a visiting lecture series coinciding with athletic contest. Michael Slive, an attorney specializing in sports law and a former assistant commissioner and athletic director, was appointed commissioner of the Great Midwest in February, 1991. Along with the conference's various governing bodies, he guides the league toward the top, establishing lofty goals and making the young conference one of the country's finest. Under Slive's direction, the conference developed a sound governance structure under the direction of the league Board of Directors, which includes the institution's president. The Board of Directors meets four times annually and is the body to which the commissioner reports. Slive heads the conference offices, which are located in downtown Chicago. He is joined by two assistant commissioners. Tim Stephens, formerly the sports information director at both DePaul and Saint Louis, is Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations. An Assistant Commissioner for Compliance and Championships is to be appointed. Also on staff are Bruce Mahon, Director of Finance and Information Systems and Sandra Biller, Assistant to the Commissioner for Administration. Dwight Johnson serves as General Manager of the Great Midwest Network. Dave Phillips is Supervisor of Men's Basketball Officials and Ray Piagentinin Supervisor of Women's Basketball Officials.

Memphis State Athletic Facilities The Tiger athletic family has many places they call home at Memphis State University. The complex serves as the home of the Tiger football, baseball and track teams and offers workout facilities for all MSU sports.

The main building at Kennedy features a 50-yard, indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well-equipped training room, a fully equipped weight training facility, the football equipment room, the football locker room, sauna and steam rooms and film and meeting rooms, as well as locker rooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields, used for fall and spring practices. All of Memphis State's home baseball games are played at Nat During Stadium, a 2,000-seat facility adjacent to Kennedy's main building. Located next to the baseball stadium is Kennedy Track, an eight-lane, polyurathane tartan surface track used by the Memphis State track teams for home meets. Other features of Kennedy Sportsplex include an Olympic (indoor) pool and a golf driving range that is used by the Tiger golf teams.

The weight room at Kennedy Complex is currently 1,500 square-feet, but plans are in the works for a new 8,000 square-feet weight room. There are 8,500 pounds of free weights and dumb bells. As well, there are 44 pieces of equipment for the Tigers to train. The Kennedy Sportsplex, recently remodeled, is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the country and offers the Memphis State athlete an excellent locale to increase his/her athletic ability.
