Each fall since 1982, Memphis’ men’s soccer team has fielded a competitive squad, first in the Great Midwest Conference before joining Conference USA in 1995. Over the years, many talented student-athletes have taken the pitch in the blue-and-gray of the Tigers. Some have gone on to the pros. Most have gone on to other careers. All have remembered their time as a representative of the University of Memphis.

Game day at Mike Rose Soccer Complex offers the exciting thrills of Memphis soccer in addition to a great atmosphere. A soccer match in front of a raucous home crowd is one of the greatest joys of being an athlete at any school, and matches at Mike Rose live up to the promise of big-time college soccer. Many of the highest-caliber soccer teams in the country have come to Memphis in recent years, providing high-quality competition for the hometown Tigers. Several ranked opponents have passed through the Mike Rose Complex in recent years, including a fifth-ranked Clemson team in 2006.

“We feel like Mike Rose is one of the best college soccer facilities in the country. The quality of the surface makes for entertaining soccer every night.” MEMPHIS HEAD COACH RICHIE GRANT
For the last 10 years, the Memphis soccer programs have been able to call one of the premier soccer facilities in the country their home. The Mike Rose Soccer Complex (MRSC) is a world-class facility featuring a 2,500plus seat stadium. The state-of-the-art facility sits on 136.17 acres and houses 16 FIFA dimension fields equipped with Bermuda grass, superior playing surface complete with underground drainage, sprinkler systems and lighted playing fields. Accompanying these fields are fully paved walkways, easily accessible parking, restrooms, covered pavilions, picnic and recreation areas and a three-acre lake.

The Billy J. Murphy complex, located on Memphis’ Park Avenue Campus, is home to the U of M’s weight room, training facilities and many practice fields. Men’s soccer uses both the turf and grass fields for practice, as well as a smaller indoor turf room during inclement weather. Many taping and treatment stations are open for the use of all Tiger athletes, as well as an in-ground pool for rehabilitation purposes.

The Tiger weight room, which is currently being used by the majority of Memphis athletes, is a 10,500-square foot facility with state-of-the art equipment, including 10 self-contained Olympic platforms and power racks, a plyometric/medicine ball area, a complete dumbbell line (up to 150 lbs in two and a half pound increments) and a variety of hip sleds, glute-ham stations and other supplemental pieces allowing athletes from all teams to perform an unlimited variety of exercises and movements.

In achieving the highest team grade point average in Richie Grant’s tenure, it would appear the men’s soccer team made good use of the team at Academic Services. Located in Wilder Tower, Academic Services provides studentathletes with extra one-on-one both in season and out to make sure that each and every player earns a degree from the University of Memphis.

For the third season in a row Memphis will take to the tube for a fall contest. On Nov. 5, the long-time conference rivalry between UAB and Memphis will be showcased on Fox Soccer Channel’s “NSCAA Men’s Soccer Game of the Week”. The appearance will serve as the second time in two years that Memphis has appeared in the Fox Soccer Channel Friday night staple. The Tigers opened the season with the “Game of the Week” in 2009 against Bradley and used a late Parker Duncan goal to force overtime and an eventual 1-1 draw against the Braves. Memphis is 2-3-1 in games aired on television. In addition to the Bradley game, the Tigers also appeared in two games on CBS College Sports, losing to Conference USA foes Tulsa and SMU. Memphis’ two wins on television are an overtime victory in 2008 over No. 15 SMU and a comeback victory to capture the 2004 Conference USA Tournament Championship over UAB.

Operating out of Richie Grant’s 4-4-2 scheme gives the U of M several options to attack the opposition. An aggressive central defender is key to Grant’s system; as the predominant ballwinner, it is the central defender’s job to win the ball away from the forwards and midfielders of the opposition and advance it. Either a right or left wing defender has the freedom to join the attack, much like a central defender can advance the ball out of the back. As long as only one goes at a time and the other defenders stay back, the balance is kept. The middle of the park is consistently an area of strength for the Tigers and allows them several attacking and defending options. Central midfield can choose what route to attack, either up the middle or with the midfield wings. The center formation can vary: either a straight four-man wall in the middle, or a diamond shape with one center midfielder up concentrating on the attack and another concentrating more on defense. The U of M typically employs a stack formation for the forwards, with one playing ‘the hole’ between midfield and one attacking forward. In a traditional two-man system, one forward will attack, with the other coming in behind. The best thing about Grant’s system is the flexibility to change what isn’t working or show off different looks to the opposition. Over the season, that flexibility will keep the opponents guessing.

Andy Metcalf D.C. United
In recent years, Memphis Tiger soccer has grown into a proving ground for potential professional players. Several former Tigers have gone on to lucrative professional careers in recent years, both in American leagues and on the international stage. The most relevant example is former Tigers Dayton O’Brien and Andy Metcalf (2002-05), each of whom were drafted by Major League Soccer squads in 2006: O’Brien by the Columbus Crew, with the 33rd pick, in the second round of the Super Draft and Metcalf by the D.C. United with the 19th pick of the supplemental draft. Daniel Dobson also played for the Kansas City Wizards of the MLS after being selected as a Discover Pick. Several other Tigers have joined professional clubs in America, including current assistant coach Nick Glaser, Thomas Hyland, and former Tiger great Sean Fraser (who played at the club level in Canada). Other former Tigers have gone overseas to pursue their dreams of football glory. Currently, former Memphis footballer Michael Coburn is with Dundalk FC of the Irish Premier League. Former Tiger Kevin Walsh also enjoyed a career in Ireland.

As men’s soccer coach Richie Grant says, being a Memphis Tiger is a privilege. More than becoming a great U of M soccer player, it’s important to Grant that each and every one of his players becomes a valued alumnus that learns and grows from his experience at Memphis. Being a Tiger is a demanding job. Workouts, practice, games, classes and studying are a big part of each U of M soccer player’s life, but there are other aspects of the Memphis soccer experience to consider. The tradition of Memphis soccer dates back to the early 1980’s; a nearly 30-year institution of hard work, integrity and winning that is carried on by each player that dons the blue and gray is instilled by a coaching and support staff steeped in Tiger lore. To be a Tiger is to be an ambassador of the University of Memphis, the city and the U of M Athletics Department. The Tiger experience is a family atmosphere that stays with its members long after their playing days are over.

Parker Duncan, leading scorer for the last two seasons, spearheads the Tigers attack.
Following an up-and-down 2009 season, Memphis men’s soccer head coach Richie Grant will lead a young, yet talented, group into battle in 2010. With only two seniors and a whopping 20 players who are in their first or second year in the program, Grant has gone with a youth movement in an effort to overtake three-time defending champion Tulsa and bring Memphis back to the conference championship game for the first time since the 2004 Tigers won the conference title. The Tigers hit the ground running to open the season, playing in two tournaments (the UAB “Soccer for a Cure” Classic and the SIU-Edwardsville Tournament) in September. The good news is that the Tigers won’t travel away from Mike Rose Soccer Complex for a match other than those tournaments before its Oct. 9 trip to UCF. That isn’t to say the Tigers will have an easy path through the regular season. Memphis will face Charlotte in the “Soccer for a Cure” Classic and hosts Tulsa before traveling to Kentucky and Missouri State later in the season; each of those squads were ranked in the top-25 at some point last season.

Memphis native JJ Greer will provide spark for the Tigers in 2010.
Returning to lead Memphis up front will be sophomore J.J. Greer and junior Parker Duncan. The pair accounted for 18 Tiger points last season. Greer, a product of Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, started off strong with one goal and five assists in the opening month of his collegiate career and was ranked in the top 10 nationally for assists per game. The C-USA All-Freshman honoree is a creative passer who helps create for his frontline mates. In two years with the Memphis program, Duncan has accounted for 10 goals and four assists. Even though he might be used some as an outside midfielder, the Johnson City, Tenn., native will still look to influence teams with his relentless pressure of opposing defenders. Look for redshirt freshman Mark Sherrod to have an instant impact at forward. The ESPN Rise All-American out of Knoxville, Tenn., will add his 6-3 frame to the lineup in 2010 after missing his freshman season due to injury. The Tigers will also rely on Martin Methodist transfer Tiago Reichert and Tulsa, Okla., native Austin Gross at the position. Both players will join with Sherrod to add height to the Memphis attack. Reichert, a 6-1 player from Francisco Beltrao, Brazil, helped Martin Methodist advance to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championship with seven goals and three assists in 2009. Gross, known as “Stretch” by his teammates, is another six-footer who will help add to the attack. Newcomer Gordy Gurson will also provide depth at forward.
2010 Memphis Men’s Soccer Experience
15
Andreas Guentner, who tied Parker Duncan for the team lead with four goals last season, will find be counted on to find the back of the net early and often in 2010.
The Tigers return a solid core at the back of the pitch heading into the 2010 season. Although coach Richie Grant will have to replace team captain and 2009 All-C-USA second team pick Rick Alleman, junior Thomas Shannon seems poised to fill Alleman’s leadership role and possibly his role as a central defender. The native of Broken Arrow, Okla., has started 29 games in two years for the U of M. At the end of last season, Shannon proved his worth as Memphis’ penalty kick specialist. He went 3-for-3 with three goals in the final four games of the season including the decisive game-winner in the final game of the season against South Carolina. Also returning in the back four will be senior Rory O’Connor, who manned the other center back position in 2009. O’Connor has notched 23 starts in two years after transferring from Lambuth. Andreas Guentner also returns as a potential impact player in the back four. Guentner could see time at defender, as well as midfielder, in 2010 after being named to the All-C-USA third team as a freshman. Jordan Johnson, Hugo Mondragon and Chris Porter also return as experienced players in the back four. In addition to a deep core of returnees, Memphis will welcome freshmen Will Garcia and Maxim Van Dyck, a product of Blankenberge, Belgium. Tennessee product Tanner Thompson, as well as redshirt freshman Adam Thornton and Gardner-Webb transfer Dennis Kennetz, Jr., will also provide depth in the back four.
Rory O’Connor will be counted on to provide leadership for a young 2010 squad. 2010 Memphis Men’s Soccer Experience
16
Junior Cody McCoy returns to the midfield after starting 26 games in 2009.
Leading the returnees at the midfield position will be junior Cody McCoy, a defensive midfielder who has started 26 games in two years in the center of the park for the Tigers. Also returning will be Memphis soccer’s “Mr. Versatile”, Andreas Guentner. The sophomore from Regensburg, Germany, quickly proved his utility in 2009 by being a force in the back four and the center of the park. Guentner, a All-C-USA third team selection, as well as a C-USA All-Freshman pick, had two goals and one assist last season.
Hugo Mondragon
Hugo Mondragon also returns to the fray. The outside midfielder missed the start of the season after suffering an injury in the preseason, but quickly got involved when he returned, finishing with two goals in seven starts. In addition to being attacking forces at forward, Parker Duncan and Austin Gross also possess the ability to contribute as midfielders. Adding to the arsenal at midfield in 2010 will be freshmen Liam Collins, a native of Skibbereen, Ireland, and Jamal Keene, an Atlanta, Ga., product. Eric Trujillo, known as “Rudy” to his teammates, will also provide depth at midfield as a senior who has been with the team for four seasons after making the team via walk-on tryout in 2006. Newcomers Gordy Gurson, Dennis Kennetz, Jr., and redshirt freshman Adam Thornton will also provide depth at midfielder.

In 2010, the competition for the starter in goal will center around sophomore Jordan Leedle and incoming freshman Martin Hunter. Leedle, a native of Franklin, Tenn., has been in the Tiger program for the last two years but has found himself behind Michael Goodlett, who played his final game as a U of M footballer in the fall of 2009. Leedle assumed the starting netminder job during the spring and proved to be a steady force in goal for the Tigers. Hunter, a transplant from Newcastle upon Tyne, England, has played for the Sunderland AFC U18 squad prior to arriving in Memphis. Leedle and Hunter replace Goodlett, who ended is career with the third-best career goals against average in the program’s history. Goodlett finished his final campaign with Memphis in 2009 with a 1.27 goals against average in 16 starts. He racked up 59 saves and had six clean sheets in 2009.

“Richie Grant is a great ambassador for the sport of soccer and representative for the University of Memphis. His energy, enthusiasm, love of his players and passion are unmatched.” RICHARD BROAD COMMENTATOR, CBS COLLEGE SPORTS NETWORK
Heading in to 2010, Richie Grant stands poised to make U of M soccer history. In 2009, Grant broke the 100-win plateau in a 1-0 victory over Florida International, inching closer to becoming Memphis’ leader in wins among head coaches. Chris Bartels (198898) currently holds the mark with 110 wins over his 11 seasons at the helm of the Tiger program; at the beginning of 2010, Grant stands eight victories away from tying Bartels at the top of the list. Also in 2009, Grant saw two more Tigers earn all-conference honors, with Rick Alleman (second team) and Andreas Guentner (third team) becoming the 21st and 22nd U of M players to earn all-conference honors during Grant’s tenure. Off the pitch, the 2009 squad earned a 3.3 team grade point average, the highest of Grant’s tenure. Grant has been named C-USA Coach of the Year twice in his career, one of only two coaches to receive the honor twice. Grant led his 2004 team to a conference title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993.

Parker Duncan scored the equalizer on an assist from Ryan Ruble in the 86th minute to force a 1-1 draw against Bradley.
The Tigers opened the 2009 season on Sept. 5 in a late-night battle with the Bradley Braves in the Fox Soccer Channel “NSCAA Men’s Soccer Game of the Week”. Down 1-0 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Memphis sophomore forward Parker Duncan provided the U of M with late-game heroics after he used a back-heel tap in of a shot by Ryan Ruble to even the game at 1-1 and send the game to overtime. The game would ultimately go to two overtime periods before it ended in a 1-1 tie. The comback victory would kick start a solid start for Memphis in the opening month of the season. The youthful Tigers would end the month of September with a 4-1-2 mark heading into their Conference USA slate.

Eight players earned a goal or assist in a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Drake in 2009.
Memphis raced to a 4-1 lead using their offensive firepower against the No. 23 Drake Bulldogs at the 2009 UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in Birmingham on Sept. 13. Drake would use two late goals to close the deficit to 4-3, but the Tigers ultimately got the victory over their ranked foes from Des Moines, Iowa. In the game the U of M’s goals and assists came from eight different players, seven of which were either freshmen or sophomores. The upset of Drake proved to be the sixth upset over a ranked opponent during the Richie Grant era of Memphis men’s soccer (1999-10). In 2008, Memphis upset No. 15 SMU to pick up their first victory in the program’s history over their Conference USA rival.

Senior Rick Alleman was named to the AllC-USA Second Team in 2009.
Tiger senior defender Rick Alleman wrapped up his four-year career with the Tigers earning an All-CUSA second team nod after his performance as a central defender and team captain for Memphis during the 2009 season. Freshmen J.J. Greer, a local product from Cordova, Tenn., and Andreas Guentner, a transplant from Regensburg, Germany, also garnered honors from Conference USA. Greer, a forward for the Tigers, was selected to the All-Freshman team after netting one goal and dishing out five assists. Guentner, a versatile player that appeared in a variety of roles in the Tiger defense and in the midfield as a freshman, earned placement on the All-C-USA third team and on the All-Freshman team. The footballer known as “Kaiser” had two goals and one assist in his first year for the Blue and Gray.

The 2004 men’s soccer team that brought the program its first Conference USA title was an especially talented, likable team. Four Tigers from that team (Dayton O’Brien, Andy Metcalf, Michael Coburn and Daniel Dobson) would go on to professional careers after their time at the U of M was over. After a loss to then 10th-ranked South Florida, the Tigers would not suffer another loss until the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to the Buckeyes of Ohio State. That string included three wins over ranked foes, including a 3-2, come-from-behind victory against UAB in the conference championship game. The Tigers earned most of the conference awards that season, with Richie Grant picking up his second C-USA Coach of the Year honor. O’Brien was named Offensive Player of the Year, while keeper Sebastian Vecchio earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. In all, seven Tigers (O’Brien, Vecchio, Metcalf, Dobson, Justin Dyer, Gary Connolly and John Reilly) were named to one of three all-conference squads. Adam Montgomery was also named to the all-freshman team.

Former Memphis head coach Chris Bartels (1988-98) owns the school record for career victories with 110.
The rich history of Tiger soccer is littered with exceptional athletes who have left their imprint in the annals of Memphis lore. Sean Fraser (1998-01) finished his career as the all-time leader in points scored with 109. Rogerio Lima, who finished second all-time in assists, is now a soccer coach in the Memphis area. Former keeper Brooks Monaghan (1992-94) still holds the school record for shutouts with 24; he continues to serve the university as the women’s head soccer coach. Another former keeper, Sebastian Vecchio (200304) has the best career goals against average of 1.02, highlighted by his school-best 0.69 season in 2004. Memphis had the privilege of stellar coaching even before Richie Grant took the helm in 1999. His predecessor, Chris Bartels (1988-98) still owns the school record for career victories with 110.

Memphis upset No. 15 SMU 2-1 at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in 2008. The game was televised live on CBS College Sports.
The Tigers have played the role of spoiler twice in the last two seasons after picking up upset victories over No. 15 SMU in a double overtime thriller in 2008 and a victory over No. 23 Drake at the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic in 2009. Richie Grant’s squads have defeated six ranked opponents in his 11 years at the helm. Grant’s 2004 squad defeated archrival UAB twice: a regular season upset of the then-No. 17 Blazers 2-0 and a Conference USA Championship-clinching 3-2 win that sent the Tigers on to the NCAA Tournament. In 2010, the Tigers will have more opportunities to be the foil of a ranked foe, with Tulsa returning seven starters from a team that finished last season ranked seventh in the country. Missouri State, Charlotte and C-USA foe Kentucky also spent time in the top-25 last season.

R.C. Johnson has worked 37 years in athletic administration. He was named the Director of Athletics at the University of Memphis on December 29, 1995.
R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last seven years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Championship title in 200708. In addition, for the last 12 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 28, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 14 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed consecutive league championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
