On September 3, 2009, ribbon cutting ceremonies took place for the newly opened $1.5 million Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, located next to the Tiger Softball Complex on the University of Memphis' Park Avenue Campus. The facility provides both the Tiger and Lady Tiger golf teams with state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor areas. The center includes a 400-yard driving range, complete with two teeing areas, two putting greens, and a chipping green. Inside, both teams have locker rooms with individual player lockers as well as study, kitchen and lounge areas. Both areas also have indoor hitting bays to be used during inclement weather.

Coach Robbins
N
ow in his eighth season as head coach of the University of Memphis men’s golf team, Grant Robbins continues to build Tiger golf into a nationally-ranked program. Prior to being named head coach of the Tigers, Robbins proved his expertise at the University of North CarolinaWilmington, where he built the Seahawk golf program into a national powerhouse.
University of Memphis
During the 2004-05 campaign, Robbins led the Tigers to three tournament victories, which is the most first-place finishes in a single year in school history. Under Robbins, four Memphis golfers earned medalist honors, the team finished in the top two in five of the 10 events and Fortin-Simard was named All-Conference USA. In the 2003-04 season, Robbins led Memphis to four top five finishes in its 10 tournaments, including a first-place finish (out of 15 teams) at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Fla. He also led Memphis to third, fourth and fifth place finishes in three separate tournaments, and the Tigers won a dual match against Mississippi State on the Bulldogs’ home course. Memphis individuals had seven top five finishes in 11 tournaments, and both David Jeans and Alan Weant were named All-Conference USA. Robbins spent four seasons at the helm of the UNC-Wilmington program before coming to Memphis. His teams won 11 tournament titles in his time on the Atlantic coast, including four events during the 2002-03 season, his final campaign with the Seahawks. The Seahawks placed in the top three in 28 events under Robbins as he led UNCW to its first-ever NCAA Tournament bid in 2003. Robbins was named the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in just his second year at UNCW. During his time at Wilmington, he coached one CAA Player of the Year, two CAA Rookies of the Year and 13 All-CAA players. Seven different golfers were individual medalists in 10 tournaments during Robbins’ four-year tenure. Before taking the post at UNCW, Robbins coached for two years as an assistant at Penn State University. While there, he helped the Nittany Lions advance to a pair of NCAA East Regionals in 1998 and 1999. Robbins assisted in all facets of the Penn State program and served as the recruiting coordinator. He was also the tournament director of the Rutherford Intercollegiate and was an instructor for the Penn State Golf Camps. Robbins gained valuable experience playing on three different professional golf tours following his graduation from Memphis. Robbins put in time on the North Florida PGA Winter Tour (1994-95), the Tommy Armour Professional Golf Tour (1994-95) and the Tour America Mid-South Professional Golf Tour (1995). A Memphis native, Robbins was a four-year letterman on the Tiger golf team from 1990-94, and also served as a team captain his junior and senior seasons. He was an All-Great Midwest Conference team selection three times and was also a recipient of the Jake Fondren Golf Scholarship. During his senior season at the 1994 Vanderbilt/Music City Intercollegiate, Robbins tied for what was then the second-lowest single round in school history when he shot a 6-under-par 66, two strokes shy of the school record. Robbins earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1994 from the University of Memphis and returned to the U of M after his playing career where he earned his master’s degree in sports management in 1997. Robbins entered the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) in August of 2007 and is now a PGA Class A Professional. He is currently an instructor at the Jerry Haas Golf Camp at Wake Forest University, and has also served as an instructor at the Duke University Golf School, the Pine Needles Youth Golfari in Southern Pines, North Carolina, the Penn State Nittany Lion Golf Camp and the Fighting Scot Golf Camp in Wooster, Ohio. Robbins and his wife, Brooke, currently reside in Cordova, Tenn. The couple has one child, Bryce Andrew, born on Jan. 21, 2010.

Robbins, a 1994 graduate of Memphis where he was a three-time all-conference selection, returned to his alma mater as head coach in June of 2003. Robbins replaced his former coach Jim Cook, who unexpectedly passed away in November of 2002. Robbins, the 2008 Conference USA Coach of the Year, has guided the Tigers to eight tournament titles and 31 top-five finishes and has had eight different players win a total of 13 tournaments in his seven-plus years at the helm. Robbins also led the Tigers to their first postseason berth in more than 20 years when they qualified for the NCAA East Regional last year. In fall 2010, Robbins returned four of five players from his 2010 C-USA Championship lineup, and the Tigers’ experience paid off. Memphis climbed to No. 76 in the Golfweek College Rankings behind five top-10 finishes. Memphis won its first tournament since 2008 when it posted rounds of 274-284-284 to win the Mason Rudolph Championship. Jack Belote led the Tigers with rounds of 66-69-70 en route to claiming medalist honors for the first time in his career. Memphis had a team scoring average of 289, the lowest since the 2007-08 season. After losing three seniors off the 2007-08 squad that earned an NCAA Regional berth, Robbins led a talented, but inexperienced squad to five top-10’s and two top5’s in 2008-09. Seniors Brad Benjamin and Jordan Payne anchored the squad, each making the Conference USA All-Tournament team. The Tigers posted a low finish of second at the Memphis Intercollegiate, where they fell just short of Ohio State in the rain-shortened event. Memphis struggled early in the spring before coming on strong at the Conference USA Championship. Led by ninth and 11th place finishes by Brad Benjamin and Jordan Payne, the Tigers finished fourth in the event and posted their lowest tournament team total of the season. In 2007-08, Robbins was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year after leading the Tigers to seven top-five finishes, including one victory at the Charleston Southern University Spring Kick-Off. The Tigers, who finished in the top 10 in all but two events, played their best golf toward the end of the season posting wins over nationally-ranked Florida State, Clemson, Wake Forest and Texas Tech and earned a bid to the NCAA East Regional. It was the first postseason appearance by Memphis in more than 20 years. Former Tiger Ian Rochester was named All-Conference USA after turning in four top-five finishes, including medalist honors at the CSU Spring Kick-Off. Robbie Greenwell was also named to the All- Conference USA team after a strong season that included a win at the Linger Longer Invitational. Robbins led the University of Memphis to a third-place finish in the Conference USA Tournament. During the 2006-07 season, Robbins directed the Tigers to seven top-10 finishes, and three top-five showings. Kyle Peterman earned medalist honors in the Mason Rudolph Invitational. Ian Rochester finished sixth at the Conference USA tournament to help the Tigers to a seventh place finish. Rochester also closed out the season on a strong note by finishing second at the Linger Longer Invitational. In 2005-06, Robbins and the Tigers turned in five top-five finishes, including three top-three finishes and a title at the 2005 Memphis Intercollegiate. Memphis cracked the top 10 in 12 events, and former Tiger Keven Fortin-Simard earned medalist honors three times and was named the Conference USA Player of the Year. Robbins also led the U of M to a fourth place showing at the Conference USA Tournament, where Brad Benjamin finished third to help Memphis to the school’s best conference finish since 1999.

History 1948-50
• The University of Memphis golf program began in 1948 under head coach Enoch Mitchell. Members of the first Tiger golf team included football star Jack Scott, Bill Permenter, Charles Stewart, William Giehler, Gordon Gilbert, Don Cheek and Jack Russell. The team captured the Tennessee state championship in 1948. • In 1949-50 the golf team completed the regular season with a 7-1 record in match play. They defended such teams as Ole Miss and Tulane en route to their outstanding season. Bob Crenshaw and Dick Holley were added to the team and Bill Permenter won the Tennessee state individual title, and Bill Cheek captured the Memphis city championship.
1951-60
•L arry Smith became the head golf coach at
the University of Memphis in 1950-51 and immediately added Hillman Robbins, the state of Tennessee junior champion, to the Tiger roster. Robbins earned the No. 1 spot on the team as a freshman and went on to win the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference crown and the Southern Intercollegiate. • Ron Wenzler was signed for 1951-52 and joined Wray Williams, Jimmy Wade, Mike Flanagan, Bobby Mitchell, Rodney Scarbrough and Robbins to give the Tigers another championship team. Robbins, playing in the No. 1 position, won the Colonial Invitational, the Memphis City championship and the Southern Intercollegiate.
The team finished with an 8-1-1 record under the direction of Coach Smith. • In 1953-54, the Tigers continued to pile up victories in match play. Hillman Robbins won the Colonial Invitational for the third consecutive year. He also laid claim to the Tennessee state championship, the Southeastern PGA, and the Tennessee Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Joining Robbins on this outstanding squad was a freshman named Mason Rudolph. • The 1954-55 team ranks near the top as one of the finest in Tiger history. Robbins and Rudolph powered the team to numerous match wins along with teammates Bill Garner, Ed Crenshaw and Phil and Sam Zerilla. Robbins won the Houston Open, the Southern Intercollegiate, the Tennessee Open and, the Colonial Invitational for the fourth time, and finished the season winning the NCAA Golf Championship. He became the Tigers’ first national champion. In addition, Robbins was named as an alternate for the Walker Cup Team in 1954. He would later win the U.S. National Amateur championship. The team finished the year with a 9-2 record. • Gene Dixon, the state amateur champion, was signed in 1955-56 along with the Nashville junior champion, Lou Graham. Graham and Mason Rudolph would go on to have successful careers on the PGA Tour. • Roy Moore, Sr. and Dub Fondren took over as coaches for the Tiger golf team in 1956-57. With Graham, Arthur Leon, Phil Zerilla, Ed Crenshaw
and Ed Brantley, the linksters posted a 5-1 record and Brantley won the Tennessee Open. • The 1957-58 team was ranked fifth in the nation.
1961-70
• The 1960-61 squad blazed through the season and finished with a record of 8-1-1 in match play. The team was led by captain John Schlee, who went on to fame on the PGA Tour, as well as Ken Lindsey, Larry Campbell, Buddy McEwen, Tommy Horton and Benjy Hill. • The 1963-64 team featured freshman Mike Malarkey, who went on to become the head golf coach for the University of Tennessee Volunteers. • Ted Butler and Greg Powers joined the Tiger golf team in 1965-66 and led the team to some of its finest moments. Playing with Malarkey, Mike Nixon and Russ Glover, the team would win numerous tournament titles and gain the squad’s first NCAA team bid. Bill Brogden became the head coach in 1967. Brogden was a strong recruiter and would continue to bring talented players to Memphis. Mike Nixon, Billy Buchanan and Steve Busch were but a few of the outstanding Tiger players in the late 1960’s.
1971-80
• Jim Cook was named head coach in 1971 and set about keeping the tradition alive. His 1973 team captured the title of the Mid-America Intercollegiate in St. Louis, Missouri, Cook’s first collegiate victory. • The 1976 Tiger golf team won the Metro Conference Tournament. Paul Haire, Kirk Bailey, Tim Rush, South Smith and Putter Robbins, the son of the late Hillman Robbins, were all named to the All-Conference team.

• In the fall of 1990, with Cook recovering from heart surgery, the Tiger team won the Dixie Intercollegiate and the Hillman Robbins Memorial Tournament in Memphis. • The 1992 squad won the first Great Midwest Conference championship and the Tigers’ Troy Witham captured the medalist honors. Jim Cook was named the Great Midwest Conference Coach of the Year. • The 1995 team competed in the Great Midwest Conference for the final season. It was announced during the winter that the Tigers were joining the newly-formed Conference USA. The new league would consist of members from the Great Midwest Conference, the old Metro Conference and the Southwest Conference. Memphis was now aligned with Cincinnati, Marquette, Saint Louis, UAB and DePaul from the GMC, Louisville, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Charlotte and USF from the Metro Conference and Houston from the Southwest Conference. In the final year of the GMC, the Tigers finished second in the conference championship which was hosted by the Tigers at Farmington Country Club. • The 1996 team competed for the first time in Conference USA, which featured such outstanding golf teams as Houston and USF. • The youthful 1997 team was comprised of two freshmen, one sophomore and two seniors yet still managed five top 10 finishes including a fourth-place finish in the Conference USA Championship. Sophomore Blair Scurlock was named to the All-Conference USA Team for his play. • The 1998 Tiger golf team had six top 10 tournament finishes, including a tie for fifth in the Persimmon Ridge Intercollegiate in Louisville, Kentucky. Blair Scurlock was named to the AllC-USA team. • The 1999 Tiger golf team placed two individuals on the honors team. Blair Scurlock was named to the All-C-USA Tournament team and junior Colin Wright received All-Conference honors.
University of Memphis
2001-Present
• The 2000 Tiger golf team tied for sixth in the Conference USA Championship and Tiger freshman David Jeans tied for 13th with a score of 223. Michael Prieur tied for 14th in the Southern Hills Invitational in Tulsa. • The 2002 fall golf season was perhaps the U of M’s best in many years, but tragedy struck late in the fall. After winning the DePaul Blue Demon
Invitational and placing fourth in two events and fifth in two others, Tiger golf coach Jim Cook died of a heart attack just 36 hours after returning from the South Alabama Fall Beach Classic. Cook had coached the Tiger golf team for 31 and a half years. He was replaced by U of M administrator Bob Winn for the spring of 2003. • Former Tiger golfer Grant Robbins was hired as the new head golf coach and began his duties in the fall of 2003. Robbins, a three-time All-Great Midwest conference selection at Memphis, had served as the head golf coach at UNC-Wilmington for four years and had built the Seahawk program into a national contender. • In the beginning of just his second year as head coach, Robbins led the Tigers to three tournament wins during the fall of 2004, as Memphis rallied from behind in all three wins. It is the first time in school history that the Tigers won as many as three tournaments in a season. In all three wins, Memphis also had the individual medalist, as three different Tigers won individual titles in the three wins. • Keven Fortin-Simard won his second individual title in 2005, medalling at the Memphis Intercollegiate. The Tigers won the event for the second-straight year and earned championship honors for the fourth time in two years. FortinSimard went on to have a successful campaign in the spring of 2006, picking up two more wins and three more top-10 finishes. Brad Benjamin
finished third at the Conference USA Tournament and helped Memphis to a fourth place finish, the best conference finish by a Tiger golf squad since 1999. • The Tigers welcomed five freshmen and two transfers to campus in 2006-07 and 10 golfers saw action in the Memphis lineup. Ian Rochester started off his junior campaign right with three top-20 finishes in the fall season. Brad Benjamin and Lewis Clarke made one top-10 appearance each and Kyle Peterman picked up co-medalist honors at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, his first collegiate tournament. In the spring Ian Rochester recorded two secondplace finishes and a sixth-place finish at the conference tournament. Brad Benjamin earned medalist honors at the Palisades Collegiate Classic. • The Tigers got off to a hot start in 2007-2008 finishing in the Top-10 in each of their four fall events. Seniors Ian Rochester and Robbie Greenwell picked up two top-10 finishes apiece and sophomore Brandon Bunn tied for fifth at the Memphis Intercollegiate. The Tigers ended the year with their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1988, earning an at-large bid in the NCAA East Regional after finishing third in the C-USA Championship. Head coach Grant Robbins was named the 2008 C-USA Coach of the Year. • The U of M welcomed five newcomers in 200809, after losing three seniors off the previous year’s NCAA tournament team. Freshman Jack Belote made an immediate impact, finishing in the top-20 in his first-ever collegiate tournament and earning C-USA golfer of the week honors. Senior Jordan Payne also had his best fall as a Tiger, posting two top-10 finishes, including a tie for fifth at the Memphis Intercollegiate. The Tigers finished in the top-10 in three of their four tournaments, including a second place finish at the Memphis Intercollegiate. After a rough start in the spring, the Tigers responded in the FAU Spring Break Championship. Jordan Payne fired a three-day total of 212 to lead Memphis to a seventh-place finish. The Tigers would also post one more top-10 finish at the River Landing Intercollegiate before heading to the C-USA Men’s Golf Championship. In the conference tournament, Brad Benjamin led the Tigers, finishing tied for ninth with scores of 72-69-73 and leading Memphis to a fourth-place team finish. • Memphis welcomed four newcomers in the fall of 2009, including transfer Jonathan Fly. A native of Memphis, Fly transferred back home after spending two seasons at Auburn. He led the Tigers this fall, posting two top-10 finishes. Redshirt freshman Carlson Cox also made a big impact in the fall, holding the lowest scoring average on the team at 73.2 The Tigers posted a low team finish of second at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate with scores of 277-285-284. Fly continued his strong play in the fall, leading Memphis to three top-five team finishes, including a second place showing in the 24-team UK Bluegrass Invitational. Fly turned in scores of 70-69-68 to capture runner-up honors. Memphis also had a strong showing in the C-USA post-season awards with three players receiving accolades. Fly was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year and freshmen Carlson Cox and Lexus Keoninh were both named to the CUSA All-Freshman team.

the MarKeys, Booker T. and the MGs, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave and Isaac Hayes. The Stax Museum reopened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum Theater which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways intersecting the city. Memphis is also home of FedEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis International Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial passenger flights originate from Memphis International each day.

Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and downto-earth feel of a small town. Downtown Memphis recently realized a building boom valued at $2.3 billion which transformed the heart of the city. One of the most visible projects was the construction of AutoZone Park, the downtown ballpark which is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The city’s newest downtown project is FedExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot outdoor plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restaurants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Memphis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the entertainment center of Memphis and visitors and locals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekendlong event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May International Festival which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smithsonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the FedExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul music” through such artists as

University of Memphis For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its inception as a normal school dedicated to the education of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologicallysavvy graduates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mission while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universities; they come here to study subjects that are offered nowhere else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recognized and respected throughout the academic and scientific communities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most historic and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto yearbook was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925 the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931 the students created a campus newspaper, The Tiger Rag; and in 1935 the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became president - the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950 graduate studies were initiated, and in 1954 the school switched from a quarter to

a semester system. In 1957 the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959 the university admitted its first African American students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Center and a 12-story library. In 1983 MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by another name change and another building boom. In 1994 MSU became the University of Memphis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was completed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctoral-extensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s largest city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, The University of Memphis has 24 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five stateapproved Centers of Excellence.

R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tiger athletics into national prominence. Over the last 14 years, the dynamic administrator has built Tiger Athletics into a nationally-recognized program that has been to five bowl games in the last eight years and played for the Men’s Basketball National Championship title in 2007-08. In addition, for the last 11 straight years, donations to the department have continued to rise, and on June 30, 2010, a record-setting $7.3 million was announced by the Tiger Scholarship Fund. Also in the last seven years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 15 total C-USA championships in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regular-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and four C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009), while the women’s soccer program claimed four consecutive league championships from 2007-10. Johnson is currently spearheading his second major capital campaign which benefits nearly every area of the Tiger Athletic Department. Included in the $12.9 million project is a new addition to the Athletic Office Building, a weight room and turf practice field for Tiger Football, a redesign of the Tiger baseball stadium that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the completed golf practice facility, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basketball practice facility, a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms and the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame to honor Tiger athletes. Johnson’s first capital campaign was previously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign included a new 8,000-square-foot football and basketball office complex addition, a new basketball

practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete renovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambassador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tiger Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promotions and sponsorships, as well as the official athletic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M entered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Tiger athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set a school record with 51 percent of its student-athletes achieving a 3.0 or higher during the spring 2010 semester. For the most recent academic year, which includes fall 2009 and spring 2010, 339 studentathletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA and eight had a 4.0 for the year and 33 others had a 4.0 either in the fall or spring. For the spring 2010 semester, the athletic department as a whole posted its highest GPA ever with a 2.94 and 23 studentathletes garnered a 4.0 GPA. In May 2010, 48 athletes earned their degrees, marking the largest group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic academic services department began keeping record.
Before taking over Tiger Athletics, Johnson was responsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nationally-visible programs in men’s basketball and football. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate athletic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons after serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three children: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.
