cusp of national recognition. After rain washed out the invitational’s opening game, the Tigers matched up with host and 16/17th-ranked Stanford. Memphis pulled its second upset of a top25 squad in 2011, knocking off the Cardinal behind an impressive complete-game, six strikeout performance from ace Carly Hummel. Jessica Phillips drove in both runs for the Tigers. After getting shutout against reining Summit League Champions North Dakota State, 2-0, the Tigers rebounded with an 8-3 drubbing of UC Davis. Outfielder Ashleigh King drove in three of the Tiger runs, with Hummel going the distance again for the victory. In the finale, Memphis erased a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning, tying the game up after Alyssa Palmieri singled and the ball was thrown away, allowing Morgan Mosby to score from second. The Tigers got two runs in the eighth off a Heather Mott to single to score Alex Marshall, with Mott coming around for what would be the deciding run on a Phillips sacrifice fly. Hummel would pick up her third win in as many days, this time coming on in relief and pitching two innings for her season’s eighth victory. With a 12-3 record and two upsets of top-25 foes (Ohio State, Stanford) during the season’s opening two weeks, Memphis earned two votes in the USA Today/NFCA Top-25 poll for the week of Mar. 1, the first time in school history Memphis has received votes in a nationallyrecognized poll. Making History By beating Stanford in Palo Alto, the Tigers carved their own slice of Conference USA history. Never before had a C-USA school beaten

a Pac-10 squad, at home, in the regular season, before the Tigers 2-1 win against the Cardinal. The only other time a C-USA team had beaten a Pac-10 team at home was when Houston defeated Washington in the 2008 NCAA Regional, sweeping the Huskies out of the NCAA Tournament with two wins.

against Mississippi State and No. 22 Texas A&M at the Bulldog Classic. Memphis is 6-1 in first time meetings this season with wins over Ohio State, Kentucky, Georgia State, Stanford, UC Davis and Colorado. The Tigers are 46-49 all-time in first-time meetings and 27-24 when a first-time meeting is played at a neutral site.

Tigers Go 4-0 at Panther Invitational The Tiger softball team traveled to the Peach State for just the second time in program history and returned to the Bluff City with four wins on the weekend. Memphis opened play in the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State. Carly Hummel tossed her second shutout of the season with a two-hit, eight strikeout dazzling performance against the Mountaineers. Heather Mott tripled and Maddie McKinley drove her in on an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning. In game two, Memphis posted three runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past the host Georgia State 3-2. Janelle Valle picked up the win and Hummel earned her first career save. Alyssa Palmieri drove in two with a two-RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Hummel returned as the starter in game three of the weekend and turned in another shutout performance in a pitcher’s duel against Lipscomb. Heather Mott provided the heroics with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth against 2010 NFCA All-American pitcher Whittney Kihnl of Lipscomb. Janelle Valle started the championship game of the tournament against Appalachian State and turned in a complete-game shutout and earned her second victory of the season. Maddie McKinley picked up her second game-winning RBI of the weekend and the Tigers posted a second-consecutive and third 1-0 shutout on the weekend.

Caution: Rough Road Ahead! Memphis faced a tough test to begin the season with the FIU Combat Classic, but the schedule didn’t get any easier from there. The Tigers play 21 of their first 23 games away from Tiger Softball Complex. In the first 23 games, Memphis will face 10 teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2010, including four of the first five games.

Nice To Meet You This season, the Tigers face 10 opponents for the first time in program history. Nine of Memphis’ first 14 opponents are against teams the Tiger Softball program has never played. This weekend, Memphis will get its first opportunity

UniversityofMemphis

Close Calls Already, the 2011 season has been a series of close games. Memphis has already played nine games decided by one run, going 7-2 in those contests; seven one-run victories leads Conference USA this season. Last season, Memphis was involved in 16 games decided by a run (31.4 percent) and 36 by three runs or less (70.6 percent). The Tigers were 7-9 in one-run games last year and 15-21 in games decided by three runs or less. SWAC Attack In a season where they will see plenty of schools for the first time, Memphis has a familiar (and successful) feel for the Southwestern Athletic Conference. All-time against the SWAC, Memphis is 26-0 entering the weekend after sweeping a double header with Alabama A&M, Wednesday. The Tigers will get another opportunity to hone their record against the SWAC when they play Mississippi Valley State in game two, Saturday; the Tigers are 3-0 all-time against the Delta Devils, whom they will see again on March 16 for a doubleheader in Memphis. The Tigers will also host a doubleheader agaisnt Alabama State, another SWAC school, on April 6.

The Tigers will get another opportunity to knock off a stellar foe at the Bulldog Classic, when they face No. 22 Texas A&M (12-5) in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader Hummel Among C-USA Leaders Carly Hummel is proving that her snub during pre-season all-conference voting was an oversight, starting the season off with a stellar 8-0 record. Hummel is among the top pitcher’s in the conference in innings pitched (53.2; second), wins (eight; tied for second), ERA (0.91; third), strike outs (53, fifth), opposing batting average (.155, fifth) and home runs allowed (one; fifth) and owns one of Conference USA’s four nohitters this season. She is also one of two pitchers (Houston’s Donna Bourgeois) two have two wins over top-25 opponents this season. Better Late Than Never The Tiger offense has produced 12 sixth-inning runs in 15 games and those 12 runs have come in handy. Memphis tied DePaul with a tworun sixth and rallied with four runs in the sixth against FIU to tie, but dropped both games. At the Panther Invitational, Memphis used the sixth inning to earn three victories. Memphis used one-run sixth innings to post victories over Appalachian State and Lipscomb. A three-run sixth helped the Tigers top Georgia State after trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. Against Stanford, Jessica Phillips’ sixth-inning home run proved to be the difference in the Tigers upset of the 16th-ranked Cardinal.

Three Is The Magic Number When Carly Hummel steps in the pitching circle as a starter, all she needs is three runs of support. With 29 starts in her career, Hummel is 15-2 when the Tiger offense puts three or more runs on the board. Her only losses in which the Tigers scored three or more runs came against Tulsa on March 27 and 28 of 2010. Quick Start Memphis has scored 23 first-inning runs this season. The Tigers topped North Florida 3-0 to open the season and all three runs came in the first inning. After scoring one run in the first against Ohio State, the U of M scored two runs off a Maddie McKinley two-run shot to take an early lead against Kentucky. Memphis scored

Mott Adds To Triple Record Senior shortstop Heather Mott added a triple to her school record for career triples with a threebagger against Alabama A&M on Feb. 23. Mott hit a lead-off triple in the sixth inning to help Memphis to a 1-0 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. The triple was the ninth in her career and Mott holds the record over Leila Dolfo who had five career triples.

Coach Thees Garners Win No. 300 When Memphis took the field on Feb. 11 against North Florida, head coach Windy Thees was seeking her 300th career victory. Carly Hummel threw a no hitter to help Thees earn her 300th career victory. Thees is in her 11th season as a skipper with a 311-232 record. In just six seasons at the program she built from scratch, Thees has compiled a record of 146-140.

Shifting Gears After no stolen bases in the first two games, the Tigers shifted gears over the next 11 games, swiping 18 bags. Maddie McKinley leads the Tigers in stolen bases, with seven steals in eight attempts; she became the first Tiger to steal home since Lelani Bernardino against Mississippi Valley State, Mar. 30, 2010. Her seven steals are tied for third in Conference USA in 2011.

Hummel Tosses No Hitter Sophomore pitcher Carly Hummel tossed the sixth no hitter in program history on Feb. 11 at the FIU Combat Classic. After throwing four one-hitters in her freshman campaign, Hummel started her sophomore season with her first career no hitter. Hummel didn’t allow a hit through nine and two thirds innings pitched this season.

MEMPHIS SOFTBA LL 2011-12 SIGNEES Jordan Richwood • San Mateo, Calif. • P Richwood earned three varsity letters at Hillsdale High School and led the Knights to their first Peninsula Athletic League Bay Championship in 18 years. Richwood posted a microscopic 0.55 ERA and allowed only 29 hits in 168 innings pitched for head coach Randall Matheny. Of the 504 batters she retired, Richwood recorded 457 strikeouts, which came 13 shy of breaking the all-time single-season California record. She tossed her ninth career perfect game in 2010 and added her 10th and 11th career no-hitters. Richwood is an all-county and all-state selection and plays for the Sorcerer Softball Academy. Kassy Dunn • Simi Valley, Calif. • OF/2B Kassy Dunn lettered four seasons as a utility with Grace Brethren High School coached by Norma Skinner. During her 2010 season, she batted .631 with a .958 fielding percentage, 8 HRs, 28 RBI and a 1.154 slugging percentage. Pitching the bulk of innings for the Lancers, Dunn posted a 0.82 ERA and 151 strikeouts. She threw two no-hitters in the playoffs last season leading Grace Brethren to the state semifinals, the best finish in school history. Dunn is a two-time all-CIF (California Interscholastic Federation) and all-area player who was named all-state in 2010. Memphis Sweeps C-USA Weekly Awards The U of M swept the C-USA weekly awards in week one of the season as pitcher Carly Hummel earned C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors and first baseman Jessica Phillips picked up C-USA Hitter of the Week accolades. Hummel tossed a no-hitter in the season-opener and finished week one with a 3-0 record, a 1.24 ERA and allowed just 12 hits. Phillips homered twice and drove in five in the first week of action and posted a .462 batting average in the opening week of action. With Hummel and Phillips earning the weekly awards, the U of M softball program records its first sweep of the weekly awards in program history. Phillips is the second player to earn the weekly hitting award in program history. Veteran-Laden Tigers Head Coach Windy Thees has built a 2011 roster than features 11 of 22 players that are juniors or seniors. With that experience comes 742 combined starts entering the 2011 season between the 16 returning letterwinners. In the circle the Tigers feature two seniors, but only 67 career starts between Janelle Valle (39), Carly Hummel (24) and Lauren Carly (4).

Breslin Perry • Austell, Ga. • OF Perry lettered three years as a starter for head coach Mark Collins. During her career, she has played outfield and shortstop and holds the single-season school records with 18 stolen bases in 2010. Perry holds a .659 career batting average for the Eagles and has scored 54 runs in her career, both school records. Named the region’s player of the year, Perry has also earned all-state (2010) and all-county honors (2007) in her high school career. Perry traveled with the Georgia Knockouts in 2010 and the Georgia Elite in 2008. Sara Pearson • West Chester, Ohio • P/SS Pearson earned four varsity letters at Lakota East High School for head coach Steve Castner. Pearson led the Thunderhawks to the final four of the Ohio State Tournament in 2010 with 139.1 innings pitched and 222 strikeouts while posting a 0.60 earned run average. She also led the Thunderhawks at the plate, hitting .354 (34 hits out of 96 at bats) and was first on the team in triples, home runs and runs batted in. Pearson earned all-district and all-state honors in 2010 and is a three-time first team all-league selection. As a sophomore, Pearson earned Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC) player of the year honors and was also named Butler County pitcher of the year in 2009. M I SSI SSI PPI STATE BU LLDOG S MSU NOTES • Mississippi State is still trying to recover from its 0-4 start. After righting the ship and winning six of their next seven, the Bulldogs have since lost five games in a row to find themselves at the bottom of the SEC West. • The Bulldogs feature only four seniors and a pitching staff that is solely underclassmen. Coach Jay Miller’s squad is young but supremely talented. • Everything the Bulldogs do offensively is predicated on senior Courtney Nesbit, who leads Mississippi State in average (.353), home runs (5), triples (3) and RBI (15). She has already equaled her number of career home runs and is hitting almost 100 points higher than her career .260 average.

2011 MEMPHIS SOFTBALL

Head Coach • 6th Year 148-140, 311-232

Hired with the daunting task of starting a softball program from scratch, University of Memphis head coach Windy Thees has stepped up to the challenge. In just five seasons, Thees has built the Tigers into a program that has continued to show it can compete with any team in the country. Now entering her sixth season in 2011, Memphis looks to continue its growth with a squad that returns eight starters, three pitchers and 16 letterwinners. Six newcomers join Tiger Softball for Coach Thees’ sixth season. In the short six-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees has compiled a 148-140 (.514) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The Tigers finished seventh in C-USA in 2010 with a 25-26 overall record and 8-15 mark in league play. Coach Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to seven single-season pitching records in 2010, including ERA (1.97), opponent batting average (.192), most strikeouts per game (6.62), fewest hits allowed (241), fewest home runs allowed (18), fewest runs allowed (130) and fewest earned runs allowed (98). Carly Hummel highlighted the individual pitching performances with five games of 10 or more strikeouts, including four of the top five strikeout performances in program history. Hummel struck out a school record 15 batters against Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State, respectively. Hummel tossed the third-best strikeout performance against Saint Louis and the fifth-ranked came against Wichita State. Memphis pitchers tossed six one-hitters in 2010. Hummel threw four one-hitters and combined for another. Lauren Carley threw one and combined for a one-hitter with Hummel. The 2010 season also saw the Tigers advance to the C-USA Tournament semifinals for the first time in program history after a 5-1 victory over Tulsa in the opening round. In her five seasons at Memphis, Thees’ players have earned eight All-Conference awards, seven all-conference freshman team selections and two NFCA All-South Region selections. This past year, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned Second Team All-Conference USA selection and Carly Hummel was named to the all-conference freshman team. Thees’ players have also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. In addition, under Thees’ tenure the Tigers have earned four CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and four C-USA All-Academic team selections. The softball program has twice produced the U of M’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball letterwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholarships.
