SERIES HISTORY -- NINTH MEETING This is the 9th meeting between Memphis and Austin Peay. Memphis leads the overall series, 7-1, but it was Austin Peay who won the last meeting, picking up a 74-49 win over the Tigers in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on 2005-06 in the opening game of the Tigers’ Thanksgiving tournament despite a 26 point, 13-rebound effort from Paris Leonard, then in her freshman year. Memphis is 3-1 all-time against the Lady Govs in games played in Memphis. This is the first meeting with the Lady Govs for a Melissa McFerrin-coached Tiger team. HEARN ON 20-POINT STREAK Junior guard Ariel Hearn has scored 20 or more points in each of the last three games. That marks the first time in Hearn’s career that she has had three straight 20-plus point games and is the first time a Tiger has scored three in a row since Brittany Carter did it in the 2009-10 season. Carter scored 28 points in a loss to ECU in the conference tournament, then scored 22 in a WBI First round win over UMKC and 25 in a WBI Second round win over Wichita State. Hearn’s 22 points against UALR marked her 20th career game with 20 or more points. LOOKING TO SNAP A STREAK Both Austin Peay and Memphis come in to Tuesday night’s game looking to put a losing streak to rest. Austin Peay is carrying a three-game streak in to the game, while Memphis has lost four straight. The Tigers have suffered four losses to teams all ranked in the upper third of the college RPI rankings. Tiger Opponents and Current RPI (According to RealTimeRPI.com) Missouri State (262) Samford (176) Illinois (105) Minnesota (134) Southern Illinois (51) UALR (63) Memphis’ highest-RPI team in the non-conference slate is still to come: Central Michigan has an RPI of 35 and visits the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, Saturday. MORE COACHING TIES This schedule has featured a number of ties to head coach Melissa McFerrin. McFerrin coached at both Minnesota and Central Michigan and has a connection to SIU coach Cindy Stein through both of their tenures at Missouri. The Tuesday night game against Austin Peay features another coaching tie, but this one for associate coach David Midlick. Midlick served as an assistant coach on Carrie Daniels’ staff from 2010-2012, leaving Clarksville to become the head coach at Delta State, where he guided DSU to two NCAA tournament berths. VALUING THE BASKETBALL Memphis committed a season-high 23 turnovers in the loss to UALR, the nation’s No. 7 ranked defense, on Saturday. That marked the third time in six games Memphis has had 20 or more turnovers, and the ones against UALR were especially costly because a number of them came on the Tigers’ offensive end of the floor. Of the 23 Memphis turnovers, UALR grabbed just six steals, meaning the rest were just lost possessions for Memphis. The Tigers will have to be particularly aware of taking care of the ball on Tuesday night. Lady Govs’ guard Tiasha Gray ranks third in the country in the latest NCAA stats with 4.5 steals a game. FUQUA-BEY PASSES 500 POINT MARK With her 11 points in the UALR loss, Asianna Fuqua-Bey pushed past the career 500 point mark. She now needs 58 rebounds to pass the 500 career mark in that category as well, which would make her jus the 25th player in school history to have 500 ca-
reer points and 500 career rebounds. Fuqua-Bey’s 11 points against UALR was a seasonhigh and was her second straight double-digit scoring outing. DOUBLE-DOUBLE NUMBER TWO FOR WRIGHT Junior post Brianna Wright posted her second career double-double in the loss to UALR Saturday. Wright finished with 14 points and 16 rebounds. That marked the second double-double for Wright this season and the fourth for the Tigers this year. In addition to being the Tigers’ leading scorer in three of the first five games, she has scored double-digits in all five games (a career-first) and posted her first career double-double in the loss at Southern Illinois, Wednesday. Rowser finished with 13 points (on 5-for-17 shooting) and added a team-high 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds was a career-best for Rowser. CAREER SCORING NIGHTS FOR MILLER AND CREIGHTON A pair of Memphis freshmen scored career bests in the loss at Southern Illinois on Wednesday. Damonique Miller, a Little Rock native, scored five points on 2-for-3 shooting, knocking down her first collegiate three-pointer in the process. Cheyenne Creighton played a bulk of the minutes in the post in the second half against Southern Illinois, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes. Creighton was 3-for-3 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. Four of her six rebounds were off the offensive glass. CAREER NIGHT FOR HEARN Junior guard Ariel Hearn scored a career-best 28 points in the loss to Minnesota. Hearn tied a school record by knocking down seven three-point field goals in that game. She now shares that record with former Tigers Alex Winchell (Feb. 20, 2011) and LaTonya Johnson (Jan. 17, 1997). With the seven makes from three-point range on Sunday, Hearn now has 108 career three-point field goals made. She needs 23 more to move up to a tie for 8th on the all-time career list at Memphis. The 28-point effort give Hearn 1,058 career points. That moved her past Terri Galloway (1,046 points) and to 21st in career scoring at Memphis. She needs 13 more points to tie Devin Necaise (1,071) for 20th all-time in scoring. DOUBLE DIGIT REBOUNDS FOR PAIR OF TIGERS Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright each grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss to Minnesota. Fuqua-Bey had 10 offensive rebounds in the game on Sunday, becoming just the ninth player in school history to grab 10 offensive rebounds in a game. She is the first Tiger since Jasmine Lee to grab double-digit offensive rebounds in a game. McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT
Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey
Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

FINDING POINTS OFF THE BENCH Memphis is trying to blend six newcomers in with six returnees. The Tigers’ starting lineup is pretty set, as Memphis as used the same starting five in all four games. But finding some points off the bench is a challenge in the early going. Taylor Williams scored 16 points in the seasonopener, but hasn’t hit double-digit scoring since and the Tiger bench has been out-scored in three of the first four games this year, including a 7-3 deficit in bench scoring in the loss to Minnesota. ROWSER NAMED TO AMERICAN HONOR ROLL Redshirt sophomore guard Mooriah Rowser was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after leading Memphis in scoring last week in a pair of wins. Rowser is averaging 19.5 ppg and is shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range in the early going. HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT IN CAREER OPENER Junior forward Brianna Wright posted a doubledouble in her first career game at Memphis. Playing 34 minutes, she finished with 11 points and 16 rebounds and was 5-for-6 from the field. Wright also added three assists and two steals in the seasonopening win. That marked the second straight season Memphis has had a player post a double-double in the opener. Last year, Pa’Sonna Hope posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds in the overtime win over East Tennessee State. ROWSER GOES FOR 20 Redshirt sophomore guard Mooriah Rowser had a strong start to her season against Missouri State. Rowser led Memphis with 21 points, her fourth career 20-plus point game. This marks the second time in three seasons Rowser has started the season with a 20-plus point performance. In her true freshman season, she scored 24 points against Grambling State in her first college game, but two games later, suffered a knee injury that cost her the rest of that season. She posted a pair of 20-plus point performances last year (21 against Texas A&M and 20 at Louisville). WILLIAMS ADDS SCORING PUNCH FROM BENCH; SETS CAREER HIGH IN FIRST GAME Sophomore guard Taylor Williams scored a careerbest 16 points off the bench in the Friday win over

The Bears had cut what had been a 10-point Memphis lead to just three at 63-60 when Williams drained a corner three and converted the and-one with under four minutes to play, starting a 16-1 Memphis run that put the game away. Memphis needed the points off the bench, as the Tiger bench was actually out-scored by Missouri State, 33-24. TIGERS PICKED SIXTH Memphis was picked to finish sixth in the 11-team American Athletic Conference preseason coaches’ poll. Defending national champion UConn was picked to win the league, followed by USF, a team that went to the WNIT semifinals last year. League newcomers East Carolina were picked to finish third with Temple and Tulane tied for fourth in the coaches’ poll ahead of Memphis. Ariel Hearn was named pre-season first team allconference by the league coaches. FUQUA-BEY EARNS PRESEASON HONOR Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey and teammate Ariel Hearn were each named to the CollegeSportsMadness.com’s American Athletic Conference preseason teams. Hearn was a second team honoree and Fuqua-Bey was a fourth team honoree on the online outlet’s list. NO SENIOR DISCOUNTS For a second straight season, Memphis is putting a young team on the floor. But unlike last year when the team had an assortment of transfers and junior college grads making up a senior class, this year’s roster does not have a single senior on it. SIX NEW FACES With no seniors on the roster, Memphis will add six new faces to the blue and gray this year, including junior college transfer Brianna Wright, who led Chipola JC to the Juco Championship semifinals last year. Alisha Celestine, Cheyenne Creighton, Brea Elmore, Amber Holmes and Damonique Miller make up a fiveplayer freshman class for Memphis. WILDER-COCHRAN SETS FRESHMAN ASSIST RECORD Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran broke Ariel Hearn’s freshman assist record last season. Wilder-Cochran finished the season with 125 total assists and ranked third in The American with 4.0 assists per game. The 125 assists in a single season is impressive, and to put that in perspective, Wilder-Cochran was just 20 assists shy of breaking in to the single season top 10 at Memphis in single season assists. SPEAKING OF TRIPLE DIGIT ASSISTS Last year marked the first time a Melissa McFerrincoached Memphis team has had two players with 100 or more assists (Wilder-Cochran with 125, Hearn with 109).
