1989 Tiger Soccer Outlook The Transition has been made, and the Memphis State Tiger soccer team is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead in 1989. Head coach Chris Bartels took hold of the MSU soccer reigns last season. And, despite the loss of his top players (Morton Akerfors and Trevor Buckland), due to injuries, Bartels' troops were able to complete the 1988 season with a 8-7-3 record. "The 1988 season was a learning experience for everybody involved with the MSU soccer program," explained Bartels. "I had to get to know the players and they had to learn what I expected from them." According to Bartels 1989 should be a "staircase" season for his Tiger troop. "With the personnel we have coming back, and with the excellent player that we have signed, we should have a lot more depth," Bartels said. Back to lead the Tigers through a heavily-armed schedule are seniors Buckland and Eddie Knight as well as junior standout Akerfors. "Trevor is a true All-America candidate," said Bartels. "There is not a better sweeper in the country." Despite missing the final six games of the '88 season, Buckland scored six goals and passed out four assists. He ranked third on the Tiger statistical charts with 16 points. Akerfors, Memphis State's third all-time leading scorer (28), will take command of the Tigers' frontline attack. A two-year starter, Akerfors scored 11 goals prior to incurring an ankle injury during the Georgia State game that sidelined him for the remainder of the 1988 season. Knight is the Tiger's only veteran defender due to the loss of Jeff Konieczny and Scott Turner. An intimidating force in the backfield, Knight will be accompanied by sophomore Johnny Norris who saw action in 16 games in 1988. Although the Tigers may need reinforcements up front and in the backfield, they are heavily equipped in the midfield. Back from last year's squad are sophomores Pat Abbott, Jim Hink, Greg Locks and Rob Winfrey. All four players saw plenty of action as freshmen. Protecting the home net will be returning starter Troy Norwood, a 5-10 sophomore who started 15 games as a freshman. He made 70 saves on 91 shots, giving up 21 goals for a 1.29 goals per game average. Norwood's backup will be junior Todd Scarpace who played in six games last season. Bartels has recruited from afar, and was able to sign some international players that should add flair to the Tiger program. Gareth O'Sullivan, is from Ballina, Ireland, and Volker Schumann is a native of West Germany. Missouri is a heavily recruited state and Bartels was able to lure John Arrandale (Grandview), Russ Gaither (Belton) and Frank Pileggi (Kansas City) to Tigertown. Bartels has added a crop of Tennessee products: Memphis - Chris Fletcher, Rick Morris, Chris Long, and Jeff Rogers; Franklin - Todd Mitchell; Chattanooga - Bruce Martin; Cleveland - Gerald Crawford; and Columbia - Carl Embry. "If we can stay healthy, and if our newcomers make the transition easily, our next step up the ladder of success should be smooth," Bartels said. But with every step there are obstacles which this year include 21 collegiate opponents. Southern Ulinois-Edwardsville was ranked in the Midwest Region, while Illinois State received a national ranking for part of the 1988 season, and Evansville was ranked in the top five nationally. The MSU Tigers will host the 1989 Metro Conference Tournament, Nov. 4-5.

The Head Coach Chris Bartels (Bowling Green State, 1973) Chris Bartels, the former general manager of the Memphis Storm professional soccer team, was named head soccer coach at Memphis State on April 13,1988. Bartels replaced Peter Bermel, who left MSU after six years at the helm of the Tiger soccer program. Bartels, 38, served as the general manager of the Storm from June of 1986 until April 1987, when he left to enter a private family business. Prior to joining the Storm he had worked as the head coach and general manager of the Kalamazoo Kangaroos of the American Indoor Soccer League. "We are very pleased and fortunate to have a person with the caliber of Chris Bartels join our staff, said Tiger athletic director Charles Cavagnaro. "He is well known in Memphis soccer circles and has been involved with soccer at all levels in our area. We are committed to the soccer team at Memphis State and I know Chris will continue to move the program in an upward manner". A native of Oradell, New Jersey, Bartels attended River Dell High School before signing to play soccer with Bowling Green State University in 1969. In 1973, he received his BS degree in Journalism and Public Relations from BGSU. During the summer of his junior year in college, Bartels worked for the New York Cosmos in their public relations department. Following graduation from Bowling Green State, he was hired as the assistant soccer coach for the Falcons and remained in that capacity from June 1973 until June 1977, when he left to become player/coach for Athletes in Action. While working as assistant coach at Bowling Green, Bartels received his master's degree in physical education. In August of 1980, he returned to Bowling Green State as an instructor in the physical education department and regained his position as assistant soccer coach. He remained for two years before joining the professional ranks as assistant coach and Player Personnel Director for the Memphis Americans of the MISL. The 14-year veteran coach holds an "A" license from YEAR BY YEAR LOOK the United States Soccer Federation and has served as a member of the Southern Region Olympic Development Staff. Bartels and his wife, Victoria have one son, Theodore, 19 months, and are expecting another in March. 1988 Year In Review The 1988 Memphis State soccer team was rich with good, young talent-laden players. "The season was a mild success," first year head coach Chris Bartels said. Bart els joined the team after being the general manager of the Memphis Storm professional soccer team. As the season got underway, the team knew it was extremely youthful. Only one player, David Tappen, had played for three full years. The first game of the 1988 season was against former national power, Alabama A&M. The Tiger,s playing at home, prevailed with an impressive 4-1 win. Sophomore standout, Morten Akerfors led the team in scoring with two goals. The Tigers' opening game exuberance was short lived as they set out on the road for five games. During that five game road trip, the team won only one game and tied one during a stretch in which they only scored a total of nine goals. The road trip ended with loses to North Carolina-Charlotte, Missouri-St. Louis and Marquette. The team's goal-scoring doldrums ended when they returned to Memphis to play city rival Rhodes College. Akerfors and senior Donal McDonagh each had three goals in the Tiger's 9-0 victory. Freshman goalkeeper Troy Norwood earned his first collegiate shutout. The Tigers' winning ways continued as the team went undefeated in their next five matches. McDonagh became the school's all-time leading scorer in just 48 games scoring 30 goals, and the Tigers still had 10 games left in the 1988 season. "It was a great feeling for me to have reached the record," McDonagh said. He explained that everyone basically knew he was going to achieve the record, but they didn't know when. Back on the winning track, the Tigers arrived in Atlanta, Ga., to face Georgia State bearing a 6-3-2 record. However, all good things must come to an end. Despite the fact the Tigers tied the Panthers, co-captain Trevor Buckland and scoring sensation Akerfors both went down with season ending injuries. Buckland broke his left arm and Akerfors severely twisted his ankle. With the loss of Ackerfors and Buckland the Tigers were able to win only two of their final six regular season games. "They (Buckland and Akerfors) were keys to our season," Bartels said. "When they were lost, we seemed to lose our consistency." Without those two top players the team had extreme difficulty scoring goals. Opponents began double-teaming the Tigers other top scorers, McDonagh and Carl Spilker. The Tigers scored only four goals in their final five games and were held scoreless in three of those five games. McDonagh finished his three year career with 89 points. His 35-point performance in his last season fell only two points shy of the schools record for most points in a season. Senior David Tappan had participated in 78 games while at MSU. This mark ranked him second with John Cooke (1984-87) for most games played in a career. Looking at the Tigers from a different perspective, one saw that their 8-7-3 record did not indicate the intensity the players had throughout the season.

Memphis State University

The roots of Memphis State University date back to September 15, 1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee Normal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seeds for the normal school's creation were shown three years earlier, in 1909, when the Tennessee General Assembly passed the General Education law calling for the establishment and maintenance of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the state. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which in 1925 became the West Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1941, the College's curriculum in liberal arts was expanded, and the name was changed to Memphis State College, and an institution serving three to four thousand students. The undergraduate program was re-organized into three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1, 1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university and has since expanded its degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000. When classes first met at West Tennessee Normal School in the autumn of 1912, athletics were an important part of activities offered to students. Since that time, working hand-in-hand, Memphis State University and the athletic department have made great progress in growth and development. Tiger football began in 1912. Tiger basketball was started in 1920 and in just 35 years was playing in the finals of the NIT in New York. Both the Tiger football and basketball teams have enjoyed more than 40-winning seasons since becoming a part of the Memphis State campus life. Following World War II, MSU reactivated the football, basketball and baseball programs and added track, cross country, golf, tennis, soccer and volleyball. All have flourished and have reached the Division I-A status. The goals of the University and the athletic department are one in the same: to continue the growth and development of student-athletes that is the tradition of Memphis State University.

MSU Administration THE PRESIDENT Dr. Thomas G. Carpenter Dr. Thomas Carpenter, who played football at Georgia Tech before graduating from Memphis State, has been president of his alma mater for nine years. He has previously been president for 11 years at the University of North Florida at Jacksonville. Dr. Carpenter, 63, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Memphis State in 1949. He went on to receive his master's degree in economics from Baylor University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1963. Dr. Carpenter has 31 years professional experience, serving four institutions of higher education in the state of Florida (University of Florida, 1957-64; Florida Atlantic, 1964-65; West Florida, 1965-69, and North Florida, 1969-80). Dr. Carpenter is married to the former Oneida Pruette of Memphis, also a Memphis State graduate. They have two children.

THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Charles Cavagnaro Charles Cavagnaro, a former sports editor and metropolitan editor of the Memphis CommercialAppeal, took over the duties of Memphis State's athletic director on November 1,1982. A lifelong Memphian, the 48-year-old Cavagnaro attended elementary and high school in Memphis, and received a bachelor of science degree in journalism in 1966 from Memphis State University. He began working for The CommercialAppeal at the age of 19, when he was a freshman at Memphis State. Cavagnaro worked as a sports reporter for 10 years at The Commercial Appeal, covering all manner of sports stories and dealing with personalities, players and coaches and during this time was assigned to cover Memphis State football and basketball. He served on the Look Magazine All-America Selection Committee, and was a member of the American Legion World Series in baseball operation. After 10 years at the Commercial Appeal, Cavagnaro became general manager of a professional basketball team, the Memphis Pros of the ABA, in 1970 and at the time was the youngest G.M. (30) in professional basketball. Cavagnaro's wife, Pat, is a real estate sales person and a member of the Million Dollar Sales Club. The Spring Sports Coordinator BOBBY KJLPATRICK Bobby Kilpatrick is beginning his third year as the coordinator of all men's non-revenue sports at Memphis State. Kilpatrick will also enter his 19th season as the head baseball coach this spring. Kilpatrick is known as one of the finest baseball coaches in the country, compiling a record of 567-266-2 over 18 years. He is ranked in the top 20 coaches in winning percentage among those with 200 or more victories. He took over the head coaching position in 1972 replacing Al Brown. The Tigers immediately went from 11-29 to 19-14 in 1983, and Memphis State has never had a losing record since. His greatest team was in 1978, where his team finished 40-9, led the NCAA in hitting (.357), won the Metro Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA regionals. Some of the players he coached at MSU include Dave Anderson of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Charlie Lea, a former Ail-Star player in the Montreal Expos organization, and Tim Corder, a young star in the Boston Red Sox organization. Kilpatrick is a graduate of Central High School in where he was an All-City selection for three years. In 1958, he led his team to the Tennessee state championship and was named to the All-State team. Following high school, Kilpatrick signed a grant-in-aid with the University of Mississippi and played there for four years. He graduated from Ole Miss in 1962 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Bobby played in the Pale Hose system for four years before entering the coaching ranks. Kilpatrick, 48, and his wife, Georgia, have two children, Kirk and Jennifer.

The City of Memphis

Memphis on the Mississippi is named for the Egyptian city of the same name on the Nile. The name means "Place of good abode." Andrew "Old Hickory1 Jackson, one of the founders and later the seventh President of the United States, is generally credited with naming Memphis when it was established in 1819. Known as the "Cotton Capital of the World" and "The Hardwood Capital of the Nation" Memphis, is now the 14th largest city in the U.S., has a rich heritage having lived under five flags: Spain, 1541; France 1682; Great Britian, 1763; United States, 1784, and the Confederacy, 1861-62. Today's Memphis presents a full spectrum of sports, visual and performing arts, and special events for its 997,705 citizens. Located in the heart of Mid-America, Memphis is accessible from all parts of the country. Memphis International Airport is served by ten major air carriers offering over 300 flights daily. In addition, 12 excellent U.S. highways and Amtrak also serve the city. A sports complex at the Mid-South Fairgrounds includes the home of Memphis State's football team, the 63,244-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, and also the site of one of the top post-season football classics in America, the Liberty Bowl. The complex is also the site of the $4.7 million Mid-South Coliseum, an 11,200-seat arena which is the home of MSU's nationally known basketball team. Memphis has become a national mecca for golfers, with nine public and 12 private courses throughout the city.
