TIGER HEAD COACH CHRIS BARTELS Sixth year at Memphis State MSU/Career Record: 49-39-9 Graduate of Bowling Green State Born: 7-19-51, Teaneck, NJ Wife: Victoria Children: Teddy, 5; Ross, 3 Tiger head coach Chris Bartels is making waves in the Great Midwest Conference and beyond. Behind Bartels'leadership, the 1992 squad posted a .789 winning percentage, the all-time season best at MSU. As the 1993 season approaches, Bartels hopes to build on his past accomplishments and is looking forward to the new season as the 1992 defending co-champions of the Great Midwest Conference. In an effort to gain national notoriety, Bartels has improved the strength of the schedule every year and this year is no exception. This year's 20-game schedule includes nine games at home and 11 on the road. In one stretch, the Tigers play nine of 10 games on the road, including matches at St. Louis and Coastal Carolina, of which both advanced to the second round of the 1992 NCAA tournament. The home schedule includes matches with the '92 Atlantic 10 champions, West Virginia; '92 Sun Belt Tournament champions South Alabama; and long-time MSU rival, Louisville. Since Bartels arrived at MSU in 1988, he has seen major improvements in the program and the soccer facilities. Bartels has worked with the MSU Athletic Department, Tiger Clubs and the Friends of Soccer Club to make major improvements to Echles Reid, home of the Tigers. In 1992, all of the hard work paid off. Permanent seating was increased to 1,000 and the Tigers averaged just under 800 fans per game. The season high was an overflow crowd of 1,290 against

St. Louis. Bartels strives for excellence in the classroom as well as on the field by recruiting student-athletes. His program was recognized for its academic excellence in 1992 and 1993. With 11 members of the Tiger Academic 3.0 club, Bartels squad matched football for the most members from a single program at MSU.

A New Jersey native, Bartels attended River Dell High School in Oradell, N.J., before signing with Bowling Green State University on a soccer scholarship. During his junior year at BGSU, Bartels worked in public relations for the New York Cosmos. After graduating in 1973 with a degree in journalism and public relations, Bartels stayed at BGSU as an assistant coach until he became a playercoach for the Athletes in Action soccer team. In 1980, Bartels returned to BGSU as an assistant coach and physical education instructor while earning a master's degree in physical education. Bartels, who has worked as General Manager or coach for three professional soccer teams, arrived in Memphis in 1982 as an assistant coach and Player Personnel Director for the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Later, he served as the head coach and General Manager of the Kalamazoo Kangaroos in the American Indoor Soccer Association. From 1986 to 1987 Bartels was General Manager of the Memphis Storm.

ASSISTANT COACH TONY CARBOGNANI Second year at Memphis State Born: 11-5-53, Buenos Aires, Argentina Wife: Trisha Children: Dominic TonyCarbognani arrived at Memphis State after a 17-year professional career with 10 teams. Carbognani signed his first contract withtheArgentinianteamlndependiente in 1973 and played a year before moving to Santelmo where his team won the second division championship. In 1979 Carbognani joined the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League until he was traded to the Memphis Rogues. He spent three years with the Memphis Americans. The Memphis Storm of the National Professional Soccer League acquired his rights in 1987 where he played until 1990. He became a player-coach in 1990. Carbognani closed his professional career in 1991 with the Chicago Power.

1993 SEASON PREVIEW Coming off the best season in Memphis State University history, Tiger head coach Chris Bartels not only faces a major rebuilding year but he must also contend with the added pressure of being a "marked" team facirtg his most difficult schedule ever. Bartels must replace three defenders and find an offensive star to replace MSU's second all-time leading scorer, Gareth p'Sullivan. While Bartels lost many of his veterans, he thinks the 1993 team will be one of his more skillful and talented teams, although it figures to be one of his least experienced squads. Gone from the 1992 Great Midwest Conference regular season co-champions are Scott Spencer, Frank Pileggi and Rick Morris, who anchored the Tiger defense for the last three years. In 1992, the Tigers gave up only 16 goals, an MSU record, while scoring 38. Without the great defensive effort of the Tigers, goalkeeperBrooks Monaghan would have had a tough time attaining a goals'-against-average of 0.80, one of the lowest in the nation. The only position Bartels doesn't have to worry about is goalkeeper. An All-America candidate, Monaghan was the fifth-ranked goalie in the nation at one point a year ago. He finished the year as the top-ranked goalie in the South region and inthetop-10 nationally. Backing up Monaghan is Jake Meyer, a sophomore from Vancouver, Wash. Meyer was a member of the Olympic Development squad in Washington and a four-year all-state selection. Brent Jordan, a seniorfrom St. Louis, Mo., is the lone returning starter on the defense. "Brent has the experience and the skills necessary to become an excellent defender," Bartels said. "We'll just have to build the defense around him." Forthe first time in several years the Tiger defense poses a question mark for

4

Bartels. "We haven't had to worry too much about defense the last couple of years," Bartels said. "Last year all we really had to worry about was scoring goals, but this year we have a two-pronged attack of worries. We have to worry about both defense and scoring goals." During the spring, Bartels experimented with several combinations in an effort to shore up his defense. However, he is most concerned about the last line of defense, the sweeper position. That's the big question mark, who will play sweeper," Bartels said, "because you've got to have a strong sweeper that reads the game well and communicates well with the people in front of him." Thomas Olhmeier saw time at the sweeper position during the spring and Bartels was pleasantly surprised. Ohlmeier, a midfielder in '92, was the Tigers' second leading scorer and led the team in assists with six. He also tied for the team lead in game-winning goals with three. Another defensive possibility is Clint Browne, who played the sweeper position last summer for a local semi-pro team in Memphis and did quite well, according to Bartels. "Realistically, I neverconsidered Clint at sweeper," said Bartels. "After seeing his play last summer, he is a definite option for us." Bartels expects to have a little more depth at the defender position, though it will be inexperienced. Justin Rose, Goran Larsson, Brian Reddin, Johnny Neff and Robert Pepper are all expected to compete for playing time with Jordan. Rose, a sophomore from White Station High School in Memphis, came on late in the season last year and played well. Rose saw playing time in eight matches and made his first collegiate start against nationally-ranked St. Louis. Senior Goran Larsson should provide some experience for Bartels, while

1993 SEASON PREVIEW freshmen Brian Redden of Christian BrothersHighSchool in Memphis, Johnny Neff of Bartlett and Robert Pepper of Birmingham, England should round out the defense. At the midfield position, Bartels has all sorts of possibilities. With the return of co-captain Russell Church and Ohlmeier, filling the midfield positions will be one of Bartels easier tasks this year. Church, a junior from South Africa, was the Tigers' fourth leading scorer last year, and Bartels is counting on him to provide leadership to the younger players. "Anything can happen at midfield," Bartels said. "I think we've got enough depth to survive the season." Also returning at midfield are sophomores Philip McDonnell, Tommy Smith, Greg Gallina and Damon Davis. All four played together on three consecutive Tennessee State championship teams at CBHS in Memphis. McDonnell started 13 of the Tigers' 19 matches and while he did not score a goal, he showed great poise on and off the ball. Smith played in 16 matches last year and had a goal and an assist. Davis started just two matches last year, but played in 12 and dished out two assists. Bartels is counting on these three to provide consistency to the midfield "If they can avoid the sophomore slump, they should provide us with some great play in the middle,"said Bartels. "They've played together so long in so many big games, I look for them to have a great year." Bartels also looks fpr newcomers Robert Pepper, Fergal Ford and Neff to see playing time in the middle. Pepper and Ford are from England and Ireland, respectively. "They all have the tools to play at this level," Bartels said. "We just have to wait and see how well they adjust to the new style of play they will be facing." One of the biggest questions of the 1993 season is how fast can the Tigers

gel, both defensively, and up front. The Tigers don't have a returning starter at forward, but they do have senior David Morris of Memphis and junior Bernard Licari, of Floriana, Malta. "I think David will be the first to tell you 1992 was an off year for him," Bartels said. "But this is his senior year, and I think he can have a great year in '93." Norris played in 18 matches last year and tallied nine points. Despite taking only eight shots on goal last year, he scored three goals, including a gamewinner against Vanderbilt. Licari is expected by Bartels to see significant playing time. "Bernard got to work out with us last year but didn't get to play, and he's ready to get started," Bartels said. "He's a great talent, and the problem we'll have is finding someone that can match up with him." Licari was the top scorer for the Maltese National team, and he scored a goal against Ireland in the 1992 Olympics. While Bartels expects Norris and Licari to see most of the action, he figures on another championship player from CBHS to vie for playing time. Sophomore Carter Fairley, the 1991 Tennessee Player-of-the-Year, could see action in 1993. Though he did not see much playing time last year, Fairly played well when he did. Fairley saw action in just fourmatcheswhilecoming off reconstructive knee surgery. Hetookjustthree shots but scored a goal against Centenary. Tommy Smith, a sophomore from CBHS in Memphis, could play forward if the need arises. According to Bartels, he has the speed to soften up defenses. Nicknamed "the Jackhammer", he holds the MSU record for the quickfeet machine in the Tiger weightroom.

1992 SEASON REVIEW

The crucial ingredients were all there: experience, talent, motivation and desire. Memphis State coach Chris Bartels needed only to blend them properly for a winning concoction, and he came up with a recipe for success. "With a very talented core of players returning and a good mixture of transfers and freshmen coming in, the only question would be "would the chemistry be right?" Bartels said. Bartels expected a good year for his team despite coming off a disappointing 1991 season. MSU started '91 with an impressive 7-2-2 record, only to lose it's last seven games andfinish at 7-9-2. In 1992,the Tigers delivered on their promise and set several school records in the process. MSU's 14 wins last year equalled the Tiger's record settingl 986 season, the most in a season. Their 14-3-2 record represents the highest winning percentage (.789) ever at MSU. By giving up only 16goals last year, the Tigers shattered the goals-allowed record of 22 set in 1986, and with 11 shutouts, they beat the 1986 record by three. The Tigers were ateam of streaks in '92, ayear in whichtheyhadanine-game unbeaten streak, the longest in MSU history. Their five-game unbeaten streak on the road was also the longest ever for a Tiger squad, and the five consecutive home wins equalled the 1986 record. They had two three-game shutout streaks, where they outscored their opponents, 11-0. Bartels winning combination included 11 returning players and "the best" recruiting class he said he's had. Seven of MSU's 18 new players saw action in 14 or more of the Tigers' 17 games. Transfers Brooks Monaghan, Thomas Ohlmeier and Russell Church and freshman Philip McDonnell started nearly all of the Tigers games and not only blended in well with the returning starters but became a large part of the Tigers' success last year. But the season belonged to the goalkeeper, Monaghan, whotransferedfromthe University of Evansville to record all of MSU's 11 shutouts. Monaghan was a top-10 goalkeeper nationally and rated as the top goalie

in the South region. He gave up only 16 goals in 1992 and had a goals against average of 0.80. At one point during the '92 season, he was ranked fifth in the country with a GAA of 0.50. Monaghan will likely eclipse the sixyear-old career shutout record of 14 set by E.J. Gilley in 1983-1987. "Monaghan was an A-1 keeper," Bartels said. "He played with an awful lot of confidence and he controled his area better than anyone I've ever seen. He doesn't accept mediocre performances from either himself or his teammates, and he's pretty vocal about that." Of course, Monaghan's teammates weren't in the habit of turning in mediocre performances. Ohlmeier, a junior from Oldenburg, Germany, led the Tigers in assists and advanced his game throughout the year to sco re sixgoals in the latter part of theseason. "Thomas added maturity and experience totheteam, and afterheadjustedto the college game he scored some good goals for us," Bartels said. "He had three game-winners late in the season when we really needed them, and you can't beat that." Ohlmeier was second in team scoring fortheTigers behind seniorGarethO'Sullivan. O'Sullivan scored 12 goals last year to lead the Tigers In scoring forthe third consecutive season even though hedrewthe most defensive pressure in nearly every game. Since O'Sullivan's arrival at MS U, he started 57 out of 59 games. "Gareth was a bit unlucky In 1992 in that he has scored but 12 goals," Bartels said. "But Gareth was dangerous and every team knew that he was dangerous." Junior Alan Redd, who moved from the defender slot to forward last year, did a tremendous job in relieving O'Sullivan from some of thepressurethathefaced during the 1991 year when the Tigers played with only one true forward. With four goals last year, Redd was thethird leading goalscorerforthe Tigers. "There's another guy (Redd), who, with a little bit of luck and a little more concentration, could have scored some more goals," Bartels said. "But he did a good job for us,"

1992 SEASON REVIEW The play at midfield also took much of the pressure off O'SuIlivan. With Ohlmeler leading the way, fivedifferentTiger midfielders accounted for 16 of the 38 goals scored last year. Church, a sophomore transfer from 1991 NAIA champion Boca Raton, scored two goals and dished out three assists in 1992. Patrice Lhommeau, a midfielder from les Sables D'olonne, France, started the year hot but injured his ankle and missed most of the season. Lhommeau came back to start the last game of the regular season and was ready for action in the conference tournament where, he scored the Tigers' only goal against St. Louis in the GMW Championship game. Midfielders Clint Browne, a junior from Birmingham, England, and David Morris of Memphis scored two and three goals respectively. Brent Jordan, a junior from St. Louis, provided the Tigers with great midfield play while passing out two assists. "With that kind of balance it makes it tough to pick on one man," Bartels said. "But Gareth was always going to be the marked man." The Tigers' defense, which was led by three seniors, was remarkable as well. Frank Pileggi, Rick Morris and team leader Scott Spencer allowed only one team, St. Louis, more than 20 shots in a match. The Tigers limited 10 of their opponents to 10 shots or less and 15 opponents to 15 shots or less. "The defense was phenomenal," Bartels said. "Those three guys played together so longthattheyknew each other's every move. They played their hearts out on every ball." The talent of the reserves was a deciding factor in several of MSU's victories. The 1992 sqaud had a great deal of depth, and the freshmen saw more playing time than Bartels had anticipated. "I thought they would get a little playing time here or there, but because of the injuries, to Patrice in particular, and a red card here orthere, they had to be thrown into the fire," Bartels said. "But when they got in there, there was no letdown at all, sometimes there was a surge." McDonnell, a freshman from Christian

18

Brothers High School in Memphis, was a key element in thechampionshipdrive.Heplayed in all 17 matches and started in 13. "McDonnell is pretty cool on the ball," said Bartels. "He always made good decisions." Twootherfreshmenwhosawsignificant amounts of playing time were Tommy Smith of CBHSandGeraldTumerof Harding Academy in Memphis. While Smith did not start a single match, he played in 16 matches and scored a goal in the final match of the regular season.Turner started the final two matches and played In 16 of the Tigers' 19 games. When Bartels needed speed he turned to Smith and Turner for tenacity on defense. Justin Rose, a freshman from White Station High School In Memphis, played In seven matches and with only five minutes of match experience against Alabama-Birmingham, Rose made his first collegiate start against eth-ranked St. Louis University in place of Brent Jordan who had to sit the game out with a red card. "Justin may be the back of the future," Bartels said. "He had a great game against Centenary and a good game against St. Louis." Bartels likes Rose's work ethic, saying he works hard for every ball and will get down and do the dirty work for you. Damon Davis, another freshman from CBHS, saw action in 10 games and while playing out of his usual forward position scored a goal and added two assists. Two more freshmen, both from CBHS, scored goals for the Tigers. Despite playing in only two matches, Greg Gallina scored his first goal as a Tiger just 30 seconds afterentering a match for the first time. Carter Fairley, who played in four matches, had a goal and an assist to tie Smith forthe honor of the highest scoring freshman In the talented class of 1995.

MEMPHIS STATE UNIVERSITY Tho roots of Memphis State University date back to September 15,1912, with the establishment and opening of the West Tennessee StateNormal School, which provided for the training of primary and secondary education teachers. However, the seed for the normaJ school's creation were sown three years earlier, in 1909,when the Tennessee General Assembly passed a general education law calling for the establishment and maintenance of three normal schools, one located in each of the three grand divisions of the state. The eastern edge of Memphis became the site for the West Tennessee State Normal School, which in 1925 became the West Tennessee State Teachers College. In 1941, the college's curriculum in liberal arts was expanded and the name was changed to Memphis State College, an institution serving approximately 4,000 students. The undergraduate program was reorganized into three schools and a graduate school was added in 1951. On July 1, 1957, Memphis State achieved its status as a university and has since expanded its degree programs to serve a student population of over 20,000 individuals. Memphis State's campus is situated in a quiet residential section of Memphis. The campus is unique in that all buildings are constructed in matching form and one does not expect a university in a metropolitan area of more than a million citizens to have such a large and beautiful campus with a park-like atmosphere. South campus, which was a Veterans Hospital for many years, was donated to the university. The Murphy Athletic Cantor and married student housing are located on south campus. The primary purpose of Memphis State University is to advance learning. The University is dedicated first to the traditional ideals of learning by focusing its attention and efforts upon the creation, transmission and application of knowledge. Secondly, it is com-

28

mitted to goals that are utilitarian in preparing students to serve in a variety of professions and occupations and in providing services to society for improving the quality of life and environment Through instruction, research and public service the University offers a diversity of learning opportunities for the pursuit of knowledge and truth in an atmosphere of free Inquiry and open discussion. A community of learning, the university exists to nurture students in achieving intellectual competence, maturity and development

SPRING SPORTS

32

Bob Kilpatrick Spring Sports Coordinator Bob Kilpatrick is beginning his eighth season as the Spring Sports Coordinator, overseeing the men's and women's tennis and track teams as well as the men and women's golf teams, along with the newly added rifle team. The soccer and baseball program are also overseen by Kilpatrick. This season marks the second time in 23 years that Bob Kilpatrick will not be standing in the third base coaching box at Nat Buring Stadium as the head coach of the Memphis State baseball program. Kilpatrick stepped down as head baseball coach this past season after suffering from a rare lung disease. Kilpatrick passed the reigns on to assistant coach Jeff Hopkins, but Kilpatrick is still heavily involved in the goings on of the baseball program as well as the other eight sports associated with the spring sports department. Kilpatrick came to Memphis State in 1972 when he replaced Al Brown as head baseball coach. Kilpatrick guided the Tiger baseball program to one of the most successful programs in the country during his tenure at Memphis State. In just his first season at the helm he turned a 11-29 team just a year before into a 19-14 squad. In 1978 Kilpatrick saw his team lead the nation in batting

with a .357 team mark. That same year Kilpatrick led the Tigers to the Metro Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, just missing the College World Series.
