'95 TIGERS RETURN VETERAN SQUAD

A potent scoring attack and a solid defensive backfield highlight the 1995 University of Memphis soccer squad as the Tigers prepare to begin play in the new Conference USA. The Tigers return their top three scorers from the 1994 season, including leading scorer Fergal Forde and 1993 leading scorer Bernard Licari. Head Coach Chris Bartels will also have a veteran defensive line to help ease the pressure on three young goaltenders the Tigers will use in 1995 in an attempt to replace three-year starter Brooks Monaghan who graduated last season.

Licari, the Tigers' top goal scorer from two seasons ago, returns to the Memphis lineup for his junior season and will begin the 1995 season 100 percent healthy, something that could not be said last season. Licari sat out the beginning of last season recovering from an off-season back injury. While Licari is a handful for opback posing defenders, mix in the duo of Scott Grant and Carter Fairley and the Tigers have a scoring punch that will not let up. Grant finished last season as the Tigers' second leading scorer from his forward position. Grant tallied 22 points as he registered nine goals and assisted on four more. Grant also led the Tigers in shot attempts as he fired 58 shots on goal. Grant started the '94 season slowly, but a late season surge brought him to the forefront of the Tiger offense, a trend that Grant hopes will continue into the 1995 season. Memphis will also have its version of the 12th man, as Fairley returns for his senior season. Fairley, who scored five goals on just nine shots last season, provided the Tigers with excellent scoring punch off the bench. Fairley produced 11 points in a reserve role last season. Second-year player Rolando Aguillon will also see time on the Tigers' frontline this season. Aguillon saw limited playing time last season, but a good offseason and a year of experience under his belt should allow him to become a prominent member of the Tiger offensive attack.

The Tigers are not hurting for talent at the midfield position, as they return six members of last year's squad including leading scorer Fergal Forde. Forde emerged as a legitimate scoring threat last season, as he led the Tigers with 12 goals and tied fellow midfielder Tommy Smith for the team lead with eight assists. Forde's 32 points last season is the fifth highest point total in Tiger history. Smith, a senior from Memphis, returns to his midfield position, where he likes

Offense should be plentiful this season for the Tigers, especially from the forward position. The U of M returns five players from last years squad to its front line, including a healthy Bernard Licari. 4

Robert Pepper and Justin Rose will anchor an experienced Tiger defense

to put pressure on opposing defenses. Smith is coming off a 1994 season in which he scored 16 points. Smith tallied four goals and a career-high eight assists. Joining Smith and Forde at the midfield positions will be a wealth of experience. The Tigers will have to replace Russell Church and Clint Browne, who were key ingredients to the Tigers success the last three seasons, but are still very deep in the middle. Veteran Phillip McDonnell will be counted on heavily to make up for the loss of Browne and Church. McDonnell, along with Smith, is probably the most experienced Tiger on this year's squad. Senior Greg Gallina should also see playing time at the midfield position, adding plenty of depth to that position. Ramon Aguillon, the brother of teammate Rolando, returns for his sophomore season at Memphis and should be a real force with one year of Divison I play under his belt. Aguillon saw extended playing time last year as a freshman. The strong legged player from Monterey, Mexico, added a scoring dimension to the Tiger offense because of his powerful free kicks. Kurt Clemence also returns for his sophomore season after an impressive freshman year with the Tigers in 1994. Clemence, who stands just 5-2, plays much bigger for the Tigers, as his aggres-

Head coach Chris Bartels also has a strong defensive unit returning, and will count on the defenders' strong play as the Tigers will be without All-Conference goaltender Brooks Monaghan, who graduated last season. Leading the defensive unit for the Tigers is senior Justin Rose. Rose, who has started his first three seasons at the U of M, will begin the season healthy after missing much of last season with an injured ankle. Rose missed seven games last season because of the injury. Joining Rose in the defensive backfield will be sophomores Jason Dunn and Chris Morris. As freshmen last season, the two high school teammates proved that they were a force to be reckoned with. Dunn started all 21 games last season for the Tigers, the only defender to start and play in all 21 games. Morris, who is the brother of former Tiger standout Rick Morris, proved last year that tough agressive play runs in the family. Reminiscent of his brother, Morris' aggressive style of play created problems for opposing players. Junior Robert Pepper will return to theTiger backfield after battling injuries for most of the 1994 season. Pepper saw action in nine games last season, starting eight of those matches. Johnny Neff also returns for his third season with the Tigers, and adds depth to a talented Tiger defense.

If there is one position that Bartels will have to concern himself with this season it will be in goal. Gone from last season is All-Great Midwest Conference performer Monaghan. After three solid years in goal, the Tigers will have to go with a freshman as their last line of defense. David Dipiazza, Tim Pogue and Clay Campbell will compete for the starting position. DiPiazza and Pogue were members of last year's squad, but neither saw any action, as both were redshirted. Campbell comes to theTigers as a true freshman from talent rich Germantown (Tenn.) High School. To make things easier for the young goaltenders, Bartels has kept Monaghan on as a student coach. His experience and familiarity with theTiger defenders should prove beneficial in the long run.

head coach The five-year plan took six, but The University of Memphis head soccer coach Chris Bartels' plan was to build a winning program for The U of M and to lead the Tigers to national prominence in the collegiate soccer world. Under Bartels guidance, The U of M has averaged just over 10 wins a season and has had just one losing year. Bartels' 1 9 9 2 s q u a d posted a 14-3-2 record. The 14 w i n s equalled the most ever by a Tiger soccer team, and the .789 winning percentage was the best ever for a U of M club. His teams have produced 11 GMC All-Conference selections, including two GMC tournament MVPs and four All-South selections. But Bartels most impressive accomplishments may be for academics. Bartels not only strives for excellence on the field, but in the classroom as well. His teams have consistently been recognized by both the University and the GMC

1995 University of Memphis Soccer as his 1990 recruiting class, his second, led the way in earning a tie with St. Louis University as the regular season co-champions of the Great Midwest Conference. His third recruiting class helped lead the Tigers to their first NCAA appearence. Unsatisfied with the NCAA tournament snub in 1992, despite a 14-3-2 record, Bartels and the Tigers rallied in the 1993 GMC tournament to defeat nationallyranked SLU for the GMC title and the conference's first automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Bartels has continually improved the Tigers' schedule in an effort to gain national respect for The U of M. This year's schedule is once again challenging, and with the Tigers now competing in Conference USA, the Tigers conference schedule only enhances the quality of competition. The Tigers' 18-match slate includes 10-time national champion and C-USA member Saint Louis University on the road, non-conference matches with annual powerhouses Evansville and South Alabama, while opening the season out West, with games against Portland and Washington. This year's schedule includes eight home games at Echles Field where the Tigers have built an impressive 47-12-5 (.717) record during Bartels' tenure. Overall, the Tigers are 87-30-10 (.672) at home

off. Permanent seating was increased to 1,000 and the Tigers averaged just under 800 fans per game. The season-high was an overflow crowd of 1,290 against Saint Louis. A New Jersey native, Bartels attended River Dell High School in Oradell, N.J., before signing a soccer scholarship with Bowling Green State University. During hisjunioryearatBGSU, Bartels worked in public relations for the New York Cosmos. After graduating in 1973 with a degree in journalism and public relations, Bartels stayed at BGSU as an assistant coach until he became a player-coach for the Athletes in Action soccer team. In 1980, Bartels returned to BGSU as an assistant coach and physical education instructor while earning a masters degree in physical education. Bartels, who has worked as general manager or coach for three professional soccer teams, arrived in Memphis in 1982 as an assistant coach and Player Personnel Director for the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. Later, he served as the head coach and General Manager of the Kalamazoo Kangaroos in the American Indoor Soccer Association. From 1986 to 1987 Bartels was General Manager of the Memphis Storm.

iMen's Soccer Head Coach for their academic achievements. The Tigers placed nine members on the GMC All-Academic team in 1993 and 11 in 1992. In 1992 and 1993, The U of M recognized Bartels' Tigers as the team with the highest grade-point average. During that time, the soccer squad also had the highest graduation rate among The U of M athletic programs. Bartels eye for talent paid off in 1992,

in 12 years. Last season Memphis finished 9-1-1 at Echles Field Since Bartels arrived at The U of M in 1988, he has seen major improvements in the program and the soccer facilities. Bartels has worked with The U of M Athletic Department, Tiger Clubs, and the Friends of Soccer Club to make major improvements to Echles Field, home of the Tigers. In 1992, all of the hard work paid

Bartels will lead his 1995 squad into the newly formed Conference USA which features several of the top soccer teams in the country

1995 University of Memphis Soccer

Toni Carbognani begins his third year as assistant soccer coach for The University of Memphis after enjoying a 17-year professional soccer career. Carbognani brings to the Tigers knowledge about the game of soccer that can't be bought. His abilities as a player and a coach have taken him around the world and back to Memphis. Carbognani made Memphis his permanent home in 1981 when he was with the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League. It was there when he first met Tiger head coach Chris Bartels. Bartels was the assistant coach of the Americans when Carbognani was acquired from the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League. Carbognani began his soccer career at age nine with the Huracan club in Buenos Aires and stayed with them until he was 20 years old when he signed his first professional contract with Independiente, a second division team in Argentina. After three years, he was traded to SanTelmo, another second division team. In his second year with SanTelmo, his team won the championship and moved to the first division where he stayed for another year until he was traded to Barcelona, Ecuador. After three years in Barcelona, Carbognani signed with the Cosmos in 1979. While in New York, he played with some of the greatest names in soccer. Pele was gone, but Franle Beckenbauer was there. Beckenbauer, a German, is the only man to ever play on and coach World Cup champions. Carlos Alberto, a former Brazillian World Cup team captain was also Carbognani's Cosmos teammate. Carbognani played on several teams in the MISL and the

After wrapping up a brilliant three-year career at the University of Memphis, Brooks Monaghan joins the Tigers coaching staff as a student assistant coach. Monaghan will be a vital part of coach Chris Bartels staff as he will help groom the Tigers' goalkeepers for the upcoming season. Monaghan left some large shoes to be filled, but with his knowledge of the game still a part of the Tiger program, filing those shoes will not be quite as difficult. Monaghan was a three-year starter for the Tigers after transferring from the University of Evansville after his freshman season. Monaghan, who was a prep standout for Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, returned to his hometown, and was an immediate impact on the U of M program. Monaghan led the Tigers to their best season ever in 1992, as his stingy goaltending led Memphis to a school best 14-3-2 record, and co-champions of the Great Midwest Conference. During the 1992 season, of the 14 wins the Tigers posted 11 of those were shutouts by Monaghan. In fact, his 11 shutouts in 1992 were the most ever in a season, by a Tiger goalkeeper. Monaghan finished the 1992 season with a goals against average of 0.80. Monaghan success didn't end there. In 1993, after a disappointing regular season, Monaghan turned it into high gear during the Great Midwest Conference Tournament, and led the Tigers to the GMC crown, and the team's first ever berth in the NCAA tournament. Monaghan success on the soccer field began during his prep playing days at Christian Brothers High School. Christian Brothers won two Tennessee State Championships during his career

season review

Russell Church earned all-conference honors with his strong play in 1994

he University of Memphis soccer team started the 1994 campaign with high hopes of building on Its previous success in the Great Midwest Conference and of earning its first regular season title outright. But as the injuries mounted, the Tigers' hopes and dreams faded away, as did its chance of winning an outright GMC regular season title. Tiger Head Coach Chris Bartels was disappointed in the Tigers 11-8-2 (2-4 in the GMC) record, but feels his squad played well late in the season. "Realistically, coming into the season I thought we would win the regular season title. So in that sense 1 was a little disappointed," Bartels said. "However, I was not disappointed in the level of play or in the level of effort the guys gave throughout the season." Despite losing just two starters from last year's squad, Bartels knew those shoes would be tough to fill. "Having lost only two players was good, but in losing Thomas Ohlmeier, we lost a gamer. He could change the entire game with just one touch," Bartels said. "Not only did we miss his dominating ability, we missed his leadership and maturity on the field." But at the same time Bartels knew that with the talent he had returning, the Tigers would be able to fill the void. And, with a few talented newcomers, Bartels thought his team would be in position to make some noise within the conference. Bartels and his staff made the necessary adjustments and looked bright early in the season. Memphis began the season with a solid backfield. Jason Dunn, from Houston High in Germantown, Tenn., began the season as Bartels'

1995 University of Memphis Soccer

only starting freshman, but with injuries to Justin Rose, Robert Pepper, Johnny Neff and the defection of Brian Reddin, Bartels had to dig deep into his stock of freshmen. "We started off the season with starting just one freshman in the back, but by the middle of the year, we were starting four freshmen in the back," said Bartels. "We gave up some bad goals but these guys developed and matured and the defense sorted itself out late in the season." Freshmen Jason Dunn, Chris Morris and Kurt Clemence lived up to the challenge and all saw significant playing time. The injuries have healed and Bartels1 biggest problem now may be "who gets the time." Offensively, the Tigers had one of their most successful seasons ever. With Fergal Forde's 10 goals leading the way, the Tigers amassed 52 goals, second most ever for a Tiger soccer team. As evidence of its scoring prowess, 11 different Tigers scored last season. In years past, all that opponents had to do was shut down one or two players to be successful against the Tigers. This season, they had much more to worry about. "If you key on (Bernard) Licari this year, you're probably going to get burnt by one of the other guys," Bartels said. Licari, the Tigers' leading scorer of a year ago, spent the offseason in a cast from his neck to his waist while a stress fracture in his vertebrae healed. Licari, who played sparingly in the Tigers first several matches, started in the Tigers' first GMC match against DePaul. The junior from Florianna, Malta, scored eight goals and added three assists on the season. Scott Grant, a junior from Benoni, South Africa, led the Tigers with 53 shots and was second among the Tigers with 20 points. Grant scored eight goals on the year, including a pair of game-winners. Only Russell Church had more game-winners. But one of Bartels biggest surprises may have been Church. Like Grant, a native of Benoni, South Africa, Church began the season on fire. He scored two game-winners in the first two matches. The senior co-captain was poised to lead the Tigers not only with his on-field leadership, but with his scoring ability as well.

Church ended the season with three gamewinning goals, tops among the Tigers. He had six goals and four assists overall. Midfielder Tommy Smith also had a productive year for Memphis. He scored just four goals but logged a team-leading eight assists. Carter Fairley was up to his old tricks, giving Bartels instant offense. After scoring three game-winners as a sophomore, Fairley, the junior from West Memphis, Ark., came off the bench to spark the Tigers with five goals on just nine shots. Ramon Aguillon also provided some spark. The freshman from Monterey, Mexico, scored two long distance goals off free kicks. He netted three goals for the season. While the offense was thriving, the defense had its problems. Despite registering six shutouts, the Tigers had to battle not only opposing teams, but injuries and defections as well. Brooks Monaghan and the Tigers gave up 30 goals, but in the last six matches Memphis gave up only seven goals en route to registering four shutouts.

After a slow start Clint Browne and the Tigers finished the season on a high note

TIM McCAGE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Tim McCage Memorial Scholarship is awarded to the University of Memphis' outstanding signee from the West Tennessee area. The scholarship is endowed by the McCage family and the Memphis soccer community and is named after Timothy Ireland McCage, a 1990 U of M signee who lost his life in an accident after his freshman season. While playing at The U of M, McCage competed in one match where he scored a goal and added an assist. In McCage's four-year Craigmont High School career, he scored 59 goals and assisted on 40 others in leading his teams to a 1990 Memphis City Championship and Tennessee State championships in 1986, '87 and '89. In his senior year he had outstanding matches against White Station and Raleigh-Egypt as he scored three and four goals, respectively. McCage also led his team to wins in the Germantown Invitational Tournament in Germantown, Tenn., and Lafayette Octoberfest Tournament in Lafayette , La. Individual honors garnered by McCage included being named the first recipient of the Peter Cardosi Sportsmanship Award in the Germantown (Tenn.) Invitational. He was Craigmont's leading scorer, MVP and varsity captain three consecutive years. In addition to soccer, McCage lettered as a field goal kicker for two years and he recorded 23 extra points and nine field goals. Tim McCage Memorial Scholarship Recipients

the university More than 80 years ago, The University of Memphis began as a small state teacher's college. Today, U of M is a major center for learning and research. The University of Memphis' roots date back to 1912, when radio was young, motion pictures were silent and William Howard Taft was in the White House. Named West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution's main purpose was to train and educate secondary-school teachers. Answering the need for a comprehensive school in the Mid-South, WTSNS expanded its curriculum. In 1941, the school's name changed to Memphis State College and in 1957, the college received university status and became Memphis State University. On July 1,1994, the name was changed to The University of Memphis. U of M now has more than 20,000 students and a physical plant comprising of 1,160 acres on seven different sites. The main campus now lies in the center of a sprawling metropolis and combines the convenience of a large city with the atmosphere of a residential neighborhood. South Campus, which was once a veteran's hospital, is home to the Billy J. Murphy Sports Complex and student family housing. The 62,380-seat Liberty Bowl serves as the home of Tiger football.

The University of Memphis Tiger athletic family has many places to call home for intercollegiate athletics. Echles Field is the home of the University of Memphis soccer team. The 900-seat facility is located adjacent to the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building and received a $20,000 facelift in the summer of 1992. The renovations include a new electronic Scoreboard, concrete slabs for bleachers, and the purchase of additional seats. In 1970, the University of Memphis Athletic Department officially opened the Kennedy Sportsplex, a 140-acre complex located just south of the main campus. The complex serves as the home of the Tiger football, baseball, soccer and track teams, and offers workout facilities for all U of M sports. Since that time, however, the facility has taken on a new name and is now called the

Billy J. Murphy Complex. The complex was renamed in honor of former Memphis head football coach and athletic director Billy J. Murphy. The main building at Murphy Complex features a newly renovated 50-yard indoor practice field with an artificial surface. This field is used for workouts when the weather prohibits outdoor practices and is also used by the baseball team for winter workouts. Also housed in the main building is a modern, well-equipped training room, the football equipment room, the football locker room, sauna and steam rooms, and film and meeting rooms, as well as locker rooms for the baseball and track teams. Located behind the main building are four outdoor football fields used for fall and spring practices. The new Billy J. Murphy Weight Training facility opened in January of 1993 and is now
