THE COACHES DIANE HALE, HEAD COACH Diane Hale, 26, begins her third year as Memphis State's head volleyball coach this autumn, after coaching for two years (1976-77) at Iowa State, and one year (1975) at Tennessee, while completing her master's degree in physical education. A native of Knoxville, Tenn., Diane received her bachelor's degree in physical education in May of 1975 at Tennessee, where she played four years of intercollegiate volleyball, and competed at the AIAW nationals her freshman and junior seasons. Volleyball keeps Diane busy during the off-season as she is a member of the coaching staff at the United States Volleyball Association Olympic Development Camp during the summer in Lamoni, la. She also serves as chairperson for the AAU Region 3 Junior Olympic Volleyball program. Through this, she has started an AAU-USVBA junior development program for the mid-south youth. Because of her affiliation with the USVBA, Diane was responsible for bringing to Memphis State an international women's volleyball match between the United States and Japan during the fall of 1979 in the MSU Field House. 1980 VOLLEYBALL OUTLOOK "To say that we have a realistic chance at making it to the nationals is putting it mildly. This is the best team ever fielded atMSU." Normally the preceding statements might be considered the usual preseason propaganda, but for MSU Volleyball coach Diane Hale, who returns all but one starterfrom last year's AIAW regional qualifying team, her comment has some legitimacy to it. Leading tha charges for the Lady Tigers once again this fall is senior hitter Sandy Monce, who was selected last spring to try out for the United States Olympic team in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the site of the National Sports Festival where Monce competed as a member of the southern regional team in 1978. A former high jumper, her jumping abilities, which are improved every year from summer beach volleyball in Florida, should make her a dominating force in the middle. Taking some of the workload off Monce in the middle is 6-1 freshman Holly Buford, who together with Monce should give the Lady Tigers an excellent 1 -2 defensive combo at the net for blocking purposes. Returning to provide power on the outside are seniors Celeste Homan and Lowette Swinton, while Linda Conner, an all-around athlete and junior transfer from Ole Miss is expected to move right into the starting line-up. Homan is a very aggressive and intense player, while Swinton is a strong hitter and is perhaps the best serve receiver on the team. Other returning hitters, who will give Hale the best team depth she has ever had are seniors Barb Whitaker and Margi McNeely and sophomores Debbi Hammond and Cindy Stoots. The biggest question mark for the Lady Tigers this year is who will fill the setter's position. Senior Becky Harden has occupied the starting spot forthe past three years, but without competing in any offseason USVBA ball, will be pressed from freshman Amy Watson, who was selected to compete in an USVBA Elite Development Camp in Michigan over the summer. In addition to Watson and Buford, this year's freshman class is the best ever brought into the MSU volleyball program. The other most notable newcomers are Memphian Carol Hooker, who despite being only 5-8 has an excellent verticle jump for plenty of offensive potential, and Floridians Teri Clark, a setter, and hitter Kim Fraser, who were selected to face each other in the Florida Athletig Coaches Association All-Star game last summer. Lookfor Clark to also make a run forthe number one setter's position. In preparation for post-season success, the Lady Tigers will face a difficult schedule, which include several more meetings with the best region 2 schools. In addition to rival Ole Miss, the Lady Tigers home schedule is highlighted by the first-time Metro Conference tournament, the 17th annual Memphis State Invitational and an exhibition match with the United States National team.
