HEAD COACH PETER BERMEL

The Memphis State soccer team and Peter Bermel, 44, begin their third season together a? a varsity sport and head coach, after Bermel started ^^ soccer at MSU as a club sport in 1977. A native of Arnhem, the Netherlands, Bermel came to the United States in 1964. As one of 13 children in his family, Bermel started playing soccer at the age of eight, and would play international soccer against the likes of Germany and England. After initially living in Dallas upon his arrival in the U.S., he moved to Memphis in 1966. In 1970, he became involved in Memphis' youth soccer league, where he served as both a referree and coach until this year. He is also a past president of the Adult Amateur League in Memphis. An active sportsman, Peter has also been active in Formula Ford auto racing, judo, cycling, and sailing. Bermel and his wife, Clare, have three children, Erich, age 14, Jeffrey age 14, and Andrew, age 3.

ASSISTANT COACH NEIL CLAY Neil Clay, 26, was also a late, but welcome addition to the team and will serve as the first assistant coach to Peter Bermel. A native of Hingham, Massachusetts, attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he served as team captain and picked up both all-conference and all-state honors. He has also served as an assistant coach at High Point College in High Point, North Carolina. He and his wife, Lisa, have no children.

After sitting out a year after transferring from Mississippi State, Paulo Aur is expected to take , up for his older brother in one of the midfielder '•-> ."> spots . . . a very good technician, he has improved his strength and endurance over the summer . . . prepped at MUS, where he was a team captain from 1979-80 and led his team to the state crown each year . . . in the youth league, he played for the Mustangs (1978) and the Kickers (1979 & 1981) . . . #17 JOHNCOOKE 5-10 140 Freshman A late arrival, John Cooke came over from Ballina, Country Mayo, Ireland, where he's been in competitive soccer since the age of 10 ... before leaving his homeland, he played for a club team in Ballina as a midfielder . . . highlight of his career was winning the Quigley Cup as he scored four goals in one play-off game . . . BORN May 8, 1962.


1984 MEMPHIS S #11 LARRY CRESON 6-0 180 Sophomore Should once again be the Tiger's biggest offensive threat after leading MSU in scoring with nine goals and four assists to be the only Tiger over 20 points . . . scored two goals apiece'against both Tennessee and Ole Miss . . . a very strong forward, his major attribute is that he kicks so well with his left foot . . . MVP during his senior year at MUS, where he tallied 21 goals in his prep career, including 13 with 19 assists his final year . . . BORN October 5, 1964. #7 PHOUNGDANG 5-5 130 Senior As one of the original Tigers in 1982, this quick forward may have worked the hardest during the off-season and is expected to end his career with I his best season ever . . . despite being hampered j. with a sprained ankle much of last year, he tallied eight points on two goals and four assists . . . has three goals and eight assists in his two years at MSU . . . was team captain at Central High School, where he led team in scoring with six goals . . . BORN May 25, 1963 in Viet Nam. #13 RON FERRARA 5-5 145 Freshman Ron Ferrara came to Memphis State from Bartlett High School, where he served as a team captain while playing as a midfielder . . . should also see some action as a defender at MSU . . . was also a member of the River City Wolves which won the state championships in 1981 and 1982 . . . best performance included four goals and three assists in one game before arriving at MSU . . . BORN July 29,1966. #14 PAT FISCHER 6-4 180 Sophomore Pat should once again be one of the Tigers' top midfielders after leading MSU with eight assists and two goals . . . both goals were against Rhodes College in two different meets, while he also had two assists in MSU's shutout over Ole Miss . . . picked up all-conference and all-state honors before coming to MSU . . . played for both Germantown High School and the Warriors of the Memphis Classic League . . . BORN April 14,1965. #1 ERIK GILLEY 6-1 175 Sophomore Nicknamed "E.J." . . . had a very respectable year his rookie season, allowing a 1.5 goal against average and securing five shutouts . . . was named all-tournament at the Metro Invitational . . . also had a chance to pick up an assist againstjU.T. Martin . . . before MSU, played for both Germantown High School and the T-Birds and Warriors of the Memphis Classic League . . . earned a 0.75 goal against average for the T-Birds in 1980-81, which won the state championship . . . was an all-state selection . . . BORN August 7,1965.


\TE SOCCER TE 12 SCOTT HAUSS 5-6 150 Sophomore Scott Hauss may have been the biggest surprise on the team last year moving from defender to midfielder, where he accounted for two goals, with one each against Rhodes College, and Virginia Tech . . . prep athletic experience was in football at Briarcrest, where he kicked 50 PAT's and six field goals including a game winner vs. Harding in overtime . . . missed just two PAT's in his prep career . . . BORN September 4, 1965.

#3 KENNY HECKMAN 5-8 130 Junior Always hustling, Kenny Heckman started 16 games for the Tigers last year on defense and had 12 shots on goal . . . originally a native of Deer Park, N.Y., his family moved to Collierville, where he attended high school and also starred in baseball as a second baseman . . . BORN May 1,1964.

#4 JIMMY HOLLAND 6-1 165 Freshman A candidate to be one of the Tigers' top defenders in 1984, Jimmy was a team captain as well as an all-city and all-state selection at Germantown High School, which won the state crown last iV , year . . . also played in the Memphis Classic League for the Wolves, which won both the city and state championship . . . also lettered for two years in cross country at Germantown . . . strong academically, final high school GPA was 4.0 . . . BORN February 4, 1966.

#2 DAVID JACKSON 5-9 150 Junior Should once again be the Tigers' top sweeper in 1984 . . . was named to the all-tournament team at last year's Metro Invitational . . . was originally a mid-fielder as a freshman, scoring four goals with three assists in 1982 . . . will serve as a backup goalie to Gilley . . . prepped at Harding Academy, where he set a school record for assists and was an all-state selection . . . also played for the Wolves in the Memphis Classic League . . . BORN June 23, 1964.

#9 PAT JOHNSON 5-8 160 Senior

One of two seniors on the team and one of five members, who were on the first MSU team . . . tallied three goals and two assists last year, giving him a career total of four goals and four assists in two years . . . goals last year were against TCU, Rhodes and U.T. Martin . . . moved from sweeper to forward last year . . . runs 40 in 4.6 ... BORN April 16, 1962.

Appeared in all but one game last year as a defender and started 14 contests . . . earned an 1 assist versus Tennessee last year . . . prepped at White Station High School, where he was his ,% ; team's MVP and captain and picked up all-city and all-state honors . . . had six goals and 10 assists as a senior and scored a hat trick against Auburndale . . . BORN November 7,1964.

#6 MICHAEL MUELLER 5-10 155 Junior Moved last year from defender to midfielder, where he scored two goals, one each against TCU and South Alabama. . . career stats for two years include five goals and one assist for 11 points . . . originally from Houston, Texas, where he attended Dulles High School . . . also played for the River City Wolves, which won the state championship in 1983 . . . BORN August 18, 1964.

10 DAVIDTAPPAN 5-7 145 Freshman Could be immediate offensive threat for MSU . . . originally from Germantown High, his family moved to Mandeville, La., where he played one year of varsity soccer . . . as a midfielder and forward, he tallied 19 goals and 10 assists, including four goals and three assists in one game . . . named first-team All-St. Tammany . . . also played for the Wolves, winning three state championships . . . BORN May 12, 1966.

#15 MICKEY WILLIAMS 5-9 165 Sophomore Mickey Williams will join the Tigers this year after transferring from the University of Evansville . . . earned a letter as defender at UE in 1982 and was red-shirted a year ago . . . should give the other 4 •* defenders a run for their money . . . prepped at Sheffield, which did not have soccer . . . BORN November 2, 1963.


1984 MEMPHIS STATE SOCCER OUTLOOK The Memphis State soccer team may finally be getting out of the infancy stage. After reaching intercollegiate status, the Tigers crawled to a 7-11-2 record in 1982, then reached the walking stage in 1983 with a 10-8-2 mark. In 1984, the Tigers will definitely be running toward greater goals. Coach Peter Bermel will welcome back 10 lettermen from last year's team, which won six of their final nine matches and earned five shutouts on the same year. The most noticable returnees include sophomore forward LARRY CRESON, who ignored his rookie status and led the Tigers in scoring with 22 points on nine goals and four assists, sophomore goalie ERIK GILLEY, whose goal against average was 1.5 per game, and sophomore midfielder PAT FISCHER, who led the Tigers with eight assists and two goals. Other returning letterwinners include seniors PAT JOHNSON and PHOUNG DANG, juniors KENNY HECKMAN, DAVID JACKSON and MIKE MUELLER, and sophomores SCOTT HAUSS, and MIKE KAUKER. Coach Bermel will also have six newcomers, all which will have a good shot at not only some playing time, but could also start. One such rookie is sophomore PAULO AUR, the brother of DIDIER AUR, who was MSU's top midfielder a year ago. PAULO, who sat out last year after transfering from Mississippi State, could also be a top playmaker for the Tiger in 1984. Another sophomore transfer is MICKEY WILLIAMS, who played at the University of Evansville two seasons ago. The four freshmen, include DAVID TAPPAN, JIMMY HOLLAND, RONNIE FERRARA, and JOHN COOKE. All were products of Memphis' youth soccer league. The Tigers will once again have 10 home games on their schedule, including three tough matches with Alabama Huntsville, Wake Forest and South Alabama. On the road, Memphis State will meet such toughies as national power Alabama A&M, Georgia State, South Florida, and Northeast Louisiana.
