Heading Into the Match-Up With SMU:

On a night that the three seniors, Parker Duncan, Cody McCoy and Thomas Shannon, were honored for their playing career at Memphis, the Tigers took down tenthranked UCF, 3-2. Sophomore Mark Sherrod stole the show by scoring two goals and setting the single-season record for most goals. The Tigers struck first when Duncan headed a pass to Sherrod, who struck from 30-yards out to the left post. J.J. Greer tallied his first goal of the year in the 25th minute, giving Memphis a 2-0 lead. Liam Collins sent a free kick into the box, which Sherrod headed in front of the net to the waiting Greer. The assist for Collins was his 11th of the season, the third most assists in a season by a Tiger. UCF nabbed a goal in the first half, but Memphis held the 2-1 lead at the break. Sherrod struck again in the second half after taking a pass from Lewis Ellis and slotting a left-footed shot by the keeper. The two goal performance gives Sherrod 19 goals on the season, surpassing the single-season mark for most goals scored that was previously held by Sean Frasor. The Tigers surrendered a late goal, but won, 3-2.

Player Spotlight

Mark Sherrod Sophomore Forward In the Tigers’ 3-2 win over No. 10 UCF on Saturday night, Mark Sherrod became the record holder for most goals scored in a season. The striker scored two goals in the match, a bullet from 30-yards out and a left-footed shot past the keeper. Sherrod has 19 goals on the season, surpassing Sean Frasor’s 18 in 2001. Sherrod is also leading the nation and conference in total goals. The pair of goals and assist on J.J. Greer’s goal meant that Sherrod had a say in all five Memphis goals on the week. It also put him one point shy of Frasor’s record for points scored in a season.
