SCOUTING MEMPHIS 2 Memphis began the 2011 season as winners of four-straight C-USA Tournament Championships. How many teams have accomplished such a feat? In NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer just 13 programs have claimed four or more consecutive conference championships. Memphis and Boston University of the American East Conference carry the nation’s longest active championship streak. 2 The Lady Tigers returned nine starters and 15 letterwinners from the 2010 squad. Led by CUSA Defensive Player of the Year Lizzy Simonin, the Memphis defense appears to be the strength of the club as the team readies for the 2011 season. 2 Nearly half of the roster this season is represented by newcomers with 15 players in their first season of collegiate soccer. Eight freshmen have seen playing thus far, accounting for roughly 60 percent of the scoring.

2 After starting the season 2-0 for the thirdstraight season, the University of Memphis women’s soccer team looks to improve as the Lady Tigers depart on a three-game road swing. 2 The U of M begins the first of three road trips on the schedule that have three or more games consecutively on the road. 2 Memphis meets both Alabama and Samford for the second-straight season during non-conference play. 2 After helping the Lady Tigers to a 2-0 start to the regular season, senior defender Lizzy Simonin was tabbed the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week and joined the Soccer America Team of the Week. 2 The selection is the 13th time a U of M student-athlete has earned defensive player of the week honors. Simonin ties goalkeeper Isabel Birones with the most defensive player of the week selections in program history.

SCOUTING SAMFORD 2 Samford sports a 1-1 record on the season prior to a Friday matchup at UAB. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 2-0 victory at Belmont before falling short at home against Alabama on Aug. 21. 2 Samford returns eight starters and 13 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished 136-3 overall. 2 Three different players have provided the three goals for the Bulldogs thus far. In net, Alyssa Whitehead has 12 saves on the young season and has allowed just two goals in the two games.
INSIDE THE SERIES 2 Samford and Memphis meet for the fifth time and the second-straight season. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 3-1 after claiming the first three games in the series. Memphis is 0-2 at Samford having been outscored 3-1 in those two matches.
MEMPHIS IN ROAD OPENERS 2 The U of M has posted a record of 7-9 all-time in the road opener of a season. The Lady Tigers dropped their first seven road openers in school history, but have won five-straight dating back to the 2006 season.
LADY TIGERS START 2-0 2 Memphis opened the season with a 3-1 victory over LSU at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. Christabel Oduro, Kelley Gravlin and Kaitlyn Atkins provided the scoring for the U of M and Elise-Kuhar Pitters made three saves to seal the win. 2 Freshmen would again key a victory in the second match of the season as the Lady Tigers topped UALR 3-1 on Sunday. Melissa Smith, Kylie Davis and Taylor Isenhower provided the goals and three freshmen added assists in the match. 2 Memphis starts the season 2-0 for the thirdstraight season and eighth time in program history. The Lady Tigers have started a season 3-0 just one time in program history (2010).

Memphis is unbeaten in the last four meetings with a 3-0-1 mark with the lone tie coming in the 2008 meeting. AUGUST RUSH 2 As the summer winds to a close, the U of M may be sad to see the calendar flip past August. In 16 seasons, Memphis is 16-5-1 all-time in the month of August and is unbeaten in the last 14 matches in the month of August dating back to the 2003 season. 2 Since their last loss in the month of August (8/31/03-Ole Miss), Memphis has outscored its opponents 54-5. 2 The August 19 season opener was the earliest in the 16 year history of the program. Last year, Memphis set the earliest with the season opener on August 20.

2 The sign of a good team is its play on the road and the Lady Tigers have had some great success playing away from the Bluff City. In the last four seasons, Memphis is 24-6-3 in road games. The Lady Tigers are 9-3-0 in non-conference road games since the 2007 season.
2 Of the 31 players on the 2011 roster, 15 have yet to play in a collegiate game. With the exception of Kelley Gravlin, a redshirt-freshman, 14 newcomers join the Lady Tigers for the 2011 campaign. eight freshmen saw minutes in the first two matches of the season with Gravlin, Kaitlyn Atkins, Natalia Gomez-Junco, Olivia Borkenstein and Carly Cassady earning a starting nod in both matches.
DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2 Since the 2007 season, the Lady Tiger defense has helped the U of M to a 62-4-5 record when opponents score one or fewer goals. In that same span, Memphis has 44 shutouts.
THREE...IS THE MAGIC NUMBER 2 When scoring three or more goals in a match, the U of M carries a 79-6-1 record all-time. Under Head Coach Brooks Monaghan, Memphis is 58-3-1. In the past four seasons in which Memphis has four-straight championships, the record when scoring three or more goals is 24-0-1.

PROGRAM REACHES 150 WINS 2 Now in his 12th season as head coach, Brooks Monaghan as helped the U of M Women’s Soccer program reach the 150 win plateau. The Lady Tigers had one 10-plus win season in the first nine seasons as a program, but Memphis has won 11-plus games in each of the past seven seasons. PRESEASON AWARDS 2 Senior defender Lizzy Simonin was selected the Conference USA Preseason Defensive Player of the Year by the leagues 12 head coaches. Simonin is the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year after moving from forward to defender last season. 2 Simonin was tabbed as one of 30 candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Simonin is the second Lady Tiger in the last two seasons to earn the honor. 2 Simonin was ranked 73rd in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Preseason Top 100 Upperclassmen. The top 100 upperclassmen list will be updated throughout the season. 2 The NSCAA Top-25 Preseason Poll was released Aug. 9 and the Lady Tigers received votes. It is the second-straight season the U of M has opened the season in the polls whether ranked or receiving votes.

UP NEXT 2 Memphis closes the three-game road trip at Western Kentucky on Sept. 4. Following that match, the Lady Tigers return to Mike Rose Soccer Complex to face rival Ole Miss on Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
IN THE POLLS 2 Memphis entered the top-25 rankings this week as the NSCAA ranks the Lady Tigers 25th in the country. The U of M began the season receiving votes and enters the top-25 after a 2-0 start to the season. The Lady Tigers are ranked 30th in CollegeSoccer360’s composite rankings and 36th in the TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 64.
ONE FOR THE THUMB 2 Redshirt-seniors Elise Kuhar-Pitters and Melissa Smith have the unique opportunity to win a fifth championship this season. The pair has endured various injuries throughout their respective career and is headed into the 2011 season as winners of four-straight titles.
CANADA...EH? 2 If you take a look at the Lady Tigers roster you will see seven players from various provinces of Canada. Various Canadians have played a major role in Memphis claiming four-straight C-USA Championships. Of the seven Canadians on the current roster, five of the seven have a combined 14 championship rings. Alex Craig and Kylie Davis are the newest members of Lady Tiger Soccer from Canada.
