UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS HOUSTON This is the 29th meeting between Memphis and Houston. The Tigers lead the overall series 15-13 and have won three of the last four meetings with the Cougars, including an 84-49 win over the Cougars in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse back in January. Hofheinz Pavilion has been a tough place for Memphis to pick up wins. The Tigers are 6-7 all-time in the building, but managed to get a 55-45 win there last season, their first there since 2002-03, snapping a sixgame losing stream in the building. IN OUR LAST MEETING Ariel Hearn scored 21 points, adding seven assists, three steals and four rebounds in the win over Houston earlier this year, while Mooriah Rowser added 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals. Memphis dominated the glass in the last meeting, 49-25, with 13 of their 49 rebounds coming off the offensive glass. The Tigers owned a 34-14 points in the paint advantage and out-scored the Cougars 25-0 on fast break opportunities. HEARN 16TH ALL-TIME AT MEMPHIS With her 13 points against UConn on Saturday, junior guard Ariel hearn moved to 16th on the Memphis career scoring chart and comes in to Wednesday’s game at Houston with 1,370 points. That pushed the Memphis native past another Bluff City native, Paris Leonard (2005-09). Hearn needs 57 more points to tie Shannon Hamp’s (1999-2003) career scoring mark of 1,427 points, which is currently 15th in Memphis history. If Hearn can move to the Tiger top 15 in scoring (70 points away), she will become just the third player in the Tigers’ top 15 to play under Melissa McFerrin at Memphis. Nicole Dickson (10th with 1,656 points) and Brittany Carter (14th with 1,437 points) are the two Tigers currently in the top 15 who have played for McFerrin in her first seven years at Memphis. Hearn already ranks seventh in school history with 148 career three-point field goals made. She needs four more triples to move up to sixth in that category at Memphis. Her 52 triples already this year is just one away from the single season top 10. She just missed a single season school record last year, knocking down 69 threes (record is 70). MEMPHIS IN THREE-GAME SKID Memphis is looking to snap a three-game losing streak coming in to Wednesday’s contest at Houston. In the three-game slide are losses to three of the top four teams in the conference standings (UConn, USF and Temple). Memphis has not lost three straight games since suffering a four-game setback that included losses at Illinois, against Minnesota, at Southern Illinois and against UALR. Of those four teams, both Illinois and Southern Illinois have suffered injuries that have dropped their overall RPI, but both Minnesota and UALR are projected as NCAA tournament teams. The Tigers need to quickly right the ship, as four of their last six games are against teams currently above them in the league standings and two of those being road games (at Tulane and at Connecticut). WILDER-COCHRAN MISSES UCONN GAME Sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran has had a tough season. The returning point guard suffered an injury in the first practice of the fall and missed a lot of preseason work, then suffered a hand injury in the loss at USF on New Year’s Eve and missed the next three games. In the loss at Temple last Wednesday, she was

tracking down her own missed field goal and collided with an Owl on the rebound attempt and suffered another injury. She is day-to-day for Memphis. CHANGE OF ROLE FOR HEARN In the early part of the conference schedule, the Tigers utilized Ariel Hearn mostly at the two-guard spot. The hand injury suffered by Breigha Wilder-Cochran in the first game with USF changed that. Memphis started freshman Amber Holmes in the next game (a win vs. East Carolina), but in the three games that Wilder-Cochran missed, Hearn ran the point for the Tigers. Even with Wilder-Cochran back in the lineup, Hearn has spent a lot of time at the point. In the last seven games, she has handed out six or more assists in three games and is averaging 34.8 minutes a game in that same stretch. FINDING SECOND AND THIRD AND FOURTH SCORERS In 14 of Memphis’ 23 games, the Tigers’ leading scorer has been Ariel Hearn. Finding consistent scorers to help pull defensive attention away from her has been the Tigers’ challenge as of late. In the loss at Temple, Hearn was the Tigers’ only double-digit scorer. Two other Tigers finished with nine points in the game, and both are good candidates to help offset the scoring load. Brianna Wright finished with nine points on 4-for-8 shooting and is averaging 8.5 points per game in the last four games (where the Tigers are 2-2). Mooriah Rowser also added nine points off the bench, including her first three since the Dec. 31st game at USF, and is averaging 9.8 points per game in the last four contests. Her 16 points in the win at Cincinnati was the conference slate for Memphis and her consistency at the free-throw line has helped, as she is 8-for-8 over the last 3 games. Memphis is 2-4 when just one player scores double-digits and is 2-0 when four players score in doubles. LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ 12 losses, six have been by single digits, including a four-point loss to visiting USF to start this current three-game slide. Those six Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 27 points. Memphis is 5-7 in single-digit games this season. BEYOND THE ARC In the Tigers’ first two games of the season, five different players (Hearn, Rowser, Williams, Creighton and Wilder-Cochran) landed a three-point field goal. So imagine the Tiger coaching staff’s surprise when at game #22 on the season, just two players had doubledigit three-point field goals made (Hearn with 51 and Elmore with 10). Six seems to be Memphis’ magic number from beyond the arc. In games where Memphis has hit six triples as a squad, they are 5-2. The two losses in there? Minnesota and USF, both projected NCAA tournament teams in the latest ESPN Bracketology. HEARN GOES FOR 30 IN LOSS Ariel Hearn posted her first career 30-point game in the 57-53 loss to USF. That 30 points was the best single scoring game total for a player in the American Athletic Conference since league play began and was the first time a Memphis player has hit the 30-plus point mark since Nicole Dickson scored 34 in a win over Wright State back in January of 2013. Hearn’s 30-point effort earned her a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly honor roll for a third time this season. WRIGHT CLEANING UP ON THE BOARDS

Junior forward Brianna Wright led Memphis with 11 rebounds in the loss to USF. That 11-point effort was her eighth double-digit rebounding game this season and gives her 193 rebounds to date. Her 9.0 rebound per game average leads the team and of her 198 rebounds, 84 of them have come off the offensive glass (42.4 percent). FUQUA-BEY JUST SHY OF DOUBLE-DOUBLE Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey just missed her second double-double of the season in the win at Cincinnati, finishing with 15 points and nine rebounds on 7-for-9 shooting from the field. She also tied for the team lead for Memphis with three assists and two steals in 28 minutes of play. In the last two games, the junior has answered the coaching staff’s challenge to look to score more. In the two wins, she was 9-for-12 from the field (75.0 percent) and averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds in the two wins while playing under 30 minutes in each game. MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087. TURNING O-BOARDS TO POINTS Memphis has been one of the better offensive rebounding teams in the American this season, but has not seen that translate to second chance points of late. Heading in to the Temple game, the Tigers are fourth in the American with 14.4 offensive rebounds per game in league play. In the last six games, Memphis has been outscored in second chance points six straight times. For the season, they are giving up eight points a game more than they have scored on second chance points. Against USF, the Tigers gave USF 15 second-chance points and scored just five of their own off seven offensive rebounds. USF finished with 16 offensive rebounds, 11 in the second half.

ROAD WARRIORS Memphis was 2-2 on the road in the month of January, winning at UCF and Cincinnati. The Tigers will play four conference road games again in February.

NO SENIOR DISCOUNTS Memphis does not have a senior on its roster, so it has fallen to the junior trio of Ariel Hearn, Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Mooriah Rowser to serve as the Tigers’ upperclassmen. BUILDING OFF TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Memphis has a 20-win season and a post-season bid as a team goal this year. And the Tigers’ have been well-tested to date, having already faced eight teams in the top 100 in the latest NCAA RPI Report. In all, Memphis will play 11 games this season against teams currently ranked in the top 100. RPI.......................................................... Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis’ 43-year women’s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT With the Tigers’ guards struggling to score, Memphis looked to its posts for some offensive help in the first Temple game. Junior forward Brianna Wright stepped up with a season-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her fifth doubledigit rebounding night. In addition to Brianna Wright’s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. Double Digit Offensive Rebounds in a Game 12 - Diana Gray vs. McNeese State, Dec. 2, 1989 12 - Glynetha Davis vs. Virginia Tech, Jan. 11, 1989 11 - Jasmine Lee vs. Chattanooga, Mar. 15, 2012 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. DePaul, Feb. 19, 1995 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. UT Martin, Dec. 1, 1993 10 - Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. Minnesota, Nov. 23, 2014 10 - Jasmine Lee vs. East Carolina, Jan. 15, 2012 10 - Paris Leonard vs. Austin Peay, Nov. 25, 2005 10 - Connie Hibbler vs. Florida State, Jan. 26, 1987 HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
