RICE

2011 NOTES

The Owls bring a 11-9 overall record and 6-3 C-USA mark into this weekend after splitting a pair of C-USA games last weekend. Rice fell 3-1 to UCF at Tudor Fieldhouse before rallying for a 3-0 victory on Sunday over UTEP. Nancy Cole has led the offense with 221 kills on the season, while Laurie McNamara has downed 188 of her own. Megan Murphy leads the squad with 823 assists on the season, while Megan White has anchored the defense with 335 digs.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Nov. 5, 2010) HOUSTON - Vesna Jelic and Hajnalka Molnar picked up their team-leading sixth double-doubles of the year and Altrese Hawkins added a match-best 20 kills to power a strong all-around performance for Memphis, as the Tigers outlasted Rice, 3-2, in C-USA action Friday night at Tudor Fieldhouse. Jelic connected for 11 kills and picked up a career-high 20 digs for Memphis, which battled to its third-straight five-set contest and its second consecutive 3-2 victory. Jelic, Conference USA’s leader in service aces, added four aces. Molnar set 44 assists to go with 16 digs. Hawkins put together her third-straight 20-kill outing. The Memphis attack did not stop with the trio of Hawkins, Jelic and Molnar. Sophomore Marija Jovanovic downed 17 kills and hit a robust .341 for the Tiger offense, while libero Christine Bach and defensive specialist Becky Shaffer combined for 29 digs for the U of M defense. The Tigers defense was stingy, holding the Owls to a .172 clip. With the contest deadlocked at 2-2, Memphis jumped out to a 4-1 lead on the strength of an ace by Jelic and a pair of kills by Hawkins. Rice battled back to knot the set at 6-6. With the score tied at 8-all, the Tigers went on a five-point run to put the match away. Hawkins fueled the run with three kills, while Jelic added another ace. With a 14-9 lead in hand, Rice staged a small rally to close the gap to 14-11. However the Tigers lead was enough and Hawkins connected for her 20th kill of the night to end the match. The two clubs alternated sets, with Memphis winning the opener and taking a 2-1 lead after a convincing 25-12 victory in the third. Rice came back to tie the match with a dominant performance in game four. Memphis could not find the rythm to finish the match off and hit just -.086 in the set.

Overall, Houston sits at 7-2 in C-USA play and 14-5 overall. Lucy Charul (225) and Katie Norris (216) lead the Cougars in kills, while Caitlin Ogletree (794) leads the team in assists. LAST OUTING

HOUSTON - The University of Memphis volleyball team’s quest for a third-straight C-USA victory fell short today, as the Tigers were handed a straight-set loss by Houston, Sunday afternoon at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center. Memphis falls to 15-11 on the year and 6-8 in C-USA action, while the Cougars improve to 17-10, 11-4 in league play. Memphis struggled from the outset, falling behind early in the opener. Houston used a six-point run to take a commanding 13-6 lead and the Tigers never threatened. The Cougars used three Memphis errors and added a service ace as part of a 4-0 rally later in the set to make it 17-9. Set two was more of the same for the Tigers. With the score tied a 2-all, UH rattled off the next four points on three kills and a Memphis ball-handling error. Trailing 10-6, Memphis staged its own rally. A kill by Cassidy Hawkins ignited the surge and the Tigers scored on eight of the next 12 serves to pull even at 14-14. Houston answered by scoring the next three points to a 17-14 game. Memphis managed to keep the set close and Altrese Hawkins’ kill made it a two-point game, mistakes cost the Tigers in the final stretch of the set as Houston closed out the set with the last five points. Down 2-0, Memphis came out and played its most competitive set in the third. The Tigers used an ace by Jelic and a kill by Altrese Hawkins for an early 3-1 lead. In a set the featured 20 ties, Houston responded with the next three scores to make it 4-3. Two strikes by Jelic helped the Tiger regain the lead, but UH again came back to tied the set a 7-7. From there the two club’s fought through five ties before Hajnalka Molnar and Marija Jovanovic knocked down kills on consecutive serves to give Memphis a 14-12 cushion. But again the lead was short-lived as Houston battled to knot the contest at 14-all. After eight ties, Jelic again connected for a kill to give Memphis the set-point advantage, 24-23. The Tigers faltered over the final moments of the set, giving up three-straight points to end the match.

Climbing the Ladder Altrese Hawkins became the 21st person in Memphis Volleyball history to down 1,000 kills in her career. She picked up her 1000th in the first set against Howard and is now 15th all-time in the Memphis record book with 1,143 career kills. Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to ink her name in the Memphis record books. Her newest accomplishment was downing 30 kills in a single match, becoming just the sixth Tiger in Memphis history to do so. Fab 50 With a 3-2 victory over SMU, Memphis head coach April Jauregui picked her 54th win at the helm of the program. She now ranks sixth on the all-time coaching wins list. Spiketacular Dominance The Tigers won nine of 10 sets and three-straight games to claim their third preseason championship at the Spartan Spiketacular. Memphis was led by tournament MVP Altrese Hawkins, who downed 39 kills and held a .381 hitting percentage during the three games. to being named tournament MVP. She continued her preseason dominance with another all-tournament performance at the Spartan Spiketacular. Jovanovic totaled 34 kills and 24 digs while leading Memphis to three-straight victories and another tournament title. • Petronijevic posted 75 total digs during the Memphis Invitational, including a career-high 29 in the championship match against Georgia State. The 29 digs in a single match ties Christine Bach and Christen Clayton for ninth all-time. Petronijevic was also named to the all-tournament team. • Molnar was named C-USA’s Setter of the Week after a solid performance throughout the Memphis Invitational. The redshirt junior recorded 199 total assists, including 61 in the championship match against Georgia State to lead the Tigers to fourstraight victories. Molnar picked up more accolades at the Saluki Invitational, as the setter was named to the all-tournament team after leading Memphis to threestraight 3-0 victories over Green Bay, Murray State and Southern Illinois. Molnar earned her third C-USA Setter of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 3 after posting back-to-back double-doubles against Southern Miss and Tulane. • Kostic posted nine kills and 35 digs while seeing time in 13 sets throughout the Memphis Invitational. She also recorded eight service aces. 2010 in Review Coach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-conference mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational preseason tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postseason awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors. Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a teambest hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29. 800-win Milestone The University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 28thon the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list. This is Your Captain Speaking Altrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. Hawkins was named a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Preseason Team in addition to being tabbed a First Team performer by COBRA Magazine. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hitting percentage in 2010. Fresh Faces The Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season. Juniors Rule With no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

Hawkins Powers Tigers to Five-Set Win Over SMU

Memphis Falls in Straight Sets to Tulsa

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers went down to the wire before pulling out a five-set victory over SMU Friday night, defeating the Mustangs 25-18, 16-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-13. The Tigers started strong in set one, jumping out to an 8-4 lead on strong play from Altrese Hawkins and Lauren Hawkins. SMU quickly recovered and had a chance to tie at 10-9 but were stymied by a block from the Hawkins duo. Altrese Hawkins continued to dominate offensively, hammering home kills all over the court to keep the Tigers in front. Trailing 19-13, the Mustangs called timeout and regrouped to reel off four straight points, forcing Memphis to talk things over. The Tigers cleaned up out of the break, scoring six of the final seven points of the set to record a 25-18 win. Altrese Hawkins finished with seven kills on .500 hitting in the frame. Despite two early kills from Altrese Hawkins in set two, SMU managed to pull out a 7-4 lead. The Mustangs were finally able to string together three straight points to build a commanding 17-11 advantage and rode the wave in, taking the set 25-16. SMU hit an impressive .478 in the set while holding the Tigers to just .094. Set three was tight early on until an 11-2 Mustang run established a 15-7 SMU lead. The Tigers called timeout in an attempt to right the ship but were too mistake-prone to make any dent in the deficit. Memphis did manage to cut the lead to five at one point but would come no closer as the Mustangs posted a 25-15 victory. SMU put up six blocks in the third set while holding Memphis to -.276 hitting. The Tigers came out with a vengeance in set four, scoring the first six points before the Mustangs could even sniff the scoreboard. A combination of timely hitting from Altrese Hawkins and SMU attack errors contributed to the lead. The Mustangs slowly climbed back into the set, coming within three points, but were continually held at bay. With strong offensive play, Memphis eventually took the must-win set, 25-17, to force a decisive fifth game.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women’s volleyball ran into a buzz saw Sunday as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane swept the Tigers, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11, to record their eighth C-USA victory. Memphis (15-7, 4-5 C-USA) was led by 11 kills from Altrese Hawkins and 12 digs from Alexsandra Petronijevic. Tulsa established an early 8-4 lead in set one after three straight Tiger attack errors. Memphis fought back with a 4-1 spurt to cut the deficit to just one point at 13-12 but was thwarted in the comeback attempt by a kill from Tulsa’s Tyler Henderson. However, the Tigers stayed close and got another chance at 16-18 when a Tulsa service error followed by an attack error allowed Memphis to knot the score. The two teams then traded 3-0 spurts to set up a showdown at 21-21. Tulsa ultimately won the four-point battle with back-to-back blocks to take the set 25-22. In the second set, it was Memphis who took an early lead at 5-3 but saw the advantage quickly evaporate on the strength of a 5-0 Tulsa run. Lauren Hawkins finally got a score for the Tigers with a kill down the line, but the Golden Hurricane forged ahead to go up 15-8. After trading scores, Memphis responded with a 6-0 streak of its own to get within one point, but a timely Tulsa block left the Tigers still trailing. From there, the Golden Hurricane sprinted to a 25-19 win. The Tigers once again started fast in set three only to see Tulsa roar back with nine straight points to go up 11-4. Hawkins finally broke through with a kill to get Memphis back on the board, but the damage had already been done as the Golden Hurricane rode the momentum to a 25-11 victory.

Jelic got the Tigers going in the shortened fifth set with a kill down the line, allowing Memphis to play with the lead until a block from SMU knotted the score at 4-4. A back-and-forth scoring battle ensued until three straight Mustang points gave them an 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides. SMU scored again out of the break on a crosscourt kill and added another point to make it 10-6. Memphis struck back and earned a chance to tie at 13-12 after a kill from Altrese Hawkins. Jovanovic converted the opportunity with a kill of her own and moments later, an SMU attack error gave the Tigers match point at 14-13, capping a 6-1 run. Jovanovic once again came up big and went off the block to post the final point of the night and give Memphis a huge win.
