Tulsa GENERAL INFO Location: Tulsa, Okla. 2011 NOTES After dropping a 3-1 decision to SMU on Oct. 5, Tulsa has rattled of six consecutive wins to improve to 19-5 overall and a league-best 10-1 in C-USA play. The Golden Hurricane is led by Tyler Henderson, who was voted as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year. Henderson has totaled a conference-best 411 kills (4.89 k/s) this season while playing in every set for Tulsa. LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Oct. 16, 2011) MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women’s volleyball ran into a buzz saw Sunday as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane swept the Tigers, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11, to record their eighth C-USA victory. Memphis (15-7, 4-5 C-USA) was led by 11 kills from Altrese Hawkins and 12 digs from Alexsandra Petronijevic. “Tulsa is a very good team, and there is a reason they are first in the league,” Head coach April Jauregui said. “They play a low error game.” Tulsa established an early 8-4 lead in set one after three straight Tiger attack errors. Memphis fought back with a 4-1 spurt to cut the deficit to just one point at 13-12 but was thwarted in the comeback attempt by a kill from Tulsa’s Tyler Henderson. However, the Tigers stayed close and got another chance at 16-18 when a Tulsa service error followed by an attack error allowed Memphis to knot the score. The two teams then traded 3-0 spurts to set up a showdown at 21-21. Tulsa ultimately won the four-point battle with back-to-back blocks to take the set 25-22.

In the second set, it was Memphis who took an early lead at 5-3 but saw the advantage quickly evaporate on the strength of a 5-0 Tulsa run. Lauren Hawkins finally got a score for the Tigers with a kill down the line, but the Golden Hurricane forged ahead to go up 15-8. After trading scores, Memphis responded with a 6-0 streak of its own to get within one point, but a timely Tulsa block left the Tigers still trailing. From there, the Golden Hurricane sprinted to a 25-19 win. “We had our chances in the first two sets and kept it close, but our unforced errors cost us,” Jauregui said. “We need to cross the hurdle of thinking we can be good to believing that we are. We will be ready to play Rice on Friday.” The Tigers once again started fast in set three only to see Tulsa roar back with nine straight points to go up 11-4. Hawkins finally broke through with a kill to get Memphis back on the board, but the damage had already been done as the Golden Hurricane rode the momentum to a 25-11 victory.

LAST OUTING - Oct. 14, 2011

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers went down to the wire before pulling out a five-set victory over SMU Friday night, defeating the Mustangs 25-18, 16-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-13.

VOLLEYBALL INFO Series record: Tied, 4-4 Last Meeting: Oct. 14, 2011 Result: Memphis W, 3-2 Head Coach: Lisa Seifert Assistant Coaches: Cristine Dixon, Sean Kiracofe Overall Record (Years): 243-233 (16) Record at School (Years): same 2011 Overall Record: 9-14 2011 Conference Record: 5-6

The Tigers started strong in set one, jumping out to an 8-4 lead on strong play from Altrese Hawkins and Lauren Hawkins. SMU quickly recovered and had a chance to tie at 10-9 but were stymied by a block from the Hawkins duo. Altrese Hawkins continued to dominate offensively, hammering home kills all over the court to keep the Tigers in front. Trailing 19-13, the Mustangs called timeout and regrouped to reel off four straight points, forcing Memphis to talk things over. The Tigers cleaned up out of the break, scoring six of the final seven points of the set to record a 25-18 win. Altrese Hawkins finished with seven kills on .500 hitting in the frame. Despite two early kills from Altrese Hawkins in set two, SMU managed to pull out a 7-4 lead. The two teams traded points from there as neither team was able to fully claim momentum. The Mustangs were finally able to string together three straight points to build a commanding 17-11 advantage and rode the wave in, taking the set 25-16. SMU hit an impressive .478 in the set while holding the Tigers to just .094.

Set three was tight early on until an 11-2 Mustang run established a 15-7 SMU lead. The Tigers called timeout in an attempt to right the ship but were too mistake-prone to make any dent in the deficit. Memphis did manage to cut the lead to five at one point but would come no closer as the Mustangs posted a 25-15 victory. SMU put up six blocks in the third set while holding Memphis to -.276 hitting.

The Tigers came out with a vengeance in set four, scoring the first six points before the Mustangs could even sniff the scoreboard. A combination of timely hitting from Altrese Hawkins and SMU attack errors contributed to the lead. The Mustangs slowly climbed back into the set, coming within three points, but were continually held at bay. With strong offensive play, Memphis eventually took the must-win set, 25-17, to force a decisive fifth game. The Tigers took it home in the fifth set, 15-12.

Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to ink her name in the Memphis record books. Her newest accomplishment was downing 30 kills in a single match in a 3-2 win over SMU, becoming just the sixth Tiger in Memphis history to do so. Fab 50 With a 3-2 victory over SMU, Memphis head coach April Jauregui picked her 54th win at the helm of the program. She now ranks sixth on the all-time coaching wins list. Acing the Competition Memphis leads C-USA with 154 aces (1.81 sa/s) with four players ranking in the top seven in the conference in aces. Memphis was led by tournament MVP Altrese Hawkins, who downed 39 kills and held a .381 hitting percentage during the three games. 2010 in Review Coach Jauregui and the Tigers welcomed in nine newcomers from across the globe in 2010 and had a successful campaign while getting everyone adjusted to the Memphis way of doing things. The Tigers posted a 16-16 record, including a 9-3 non-conference mark and won both the Memphis Tiger Invitational and Belmont Invitational preseason tournaments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postseason awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors. Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a teambest hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29. 800-win Milestone The University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 28thon the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list. This is Your Captain Speaking Altrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. Hawkins was named a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Preseason Team in addition to being tabbed a First Team performer by COBRA Magazine. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hitting percentage in 2010. Fresh Faces The Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season. Juniors Rule With no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

Each team came out fighting in the first set and kept it close for the first few points, but three-straight errors by the Tigers allowed the Owls to take a 10-6 advantage. Two more errors by Memphis and kill by Laurie McNamara pushed the Rice lead to 17-10, forcing Memphis to call a timeout. Back-to-back blocks capped a 4-0 run by Memphis that made it 21-16 and forced Rice to call a timeout, but the Owls responded out of the break and closed out the set 25-19.

After the Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, Memphis’ Marija Jovanovic kept the Tigers in the hunt with two back-to-back kills to bring the Tigers within 8-6. The two squads were never separated by more than four points in the set until a ball handling error by Molnar, an ace by Houston’s Krysta Deangelis and a kill by Chandace Tryon gave Houston a 20-14 advantage. The Tigers were forced to call a timeout, but the Cougars continued their push were able to close out the first set, 25-18.

Rice sprinted out to a 6-2 lead in the second set behind two kills by Nancy Cole and two service aces by McNamara. A service error by Vesna Jelic coupled with a solo block by Jillian Humphrey extended the Owls’ lead to 10-5, forcing the Tigers to take a timeout. Rice came out of the timeout on a 7-1 run to take a commanding 17-10 lead and never looked back as the Owls closed the set, 25-17.

The start of the second set was tight before the U of M pulled out 9-5 lead following three straight kills and a ball handling error by Houston. Memphis quickly widened the gap to 19-10 with an offensive charge led by Altrese Hawkins, who finished the set with seven kills.

Cole and McNamara combined for four of Rice’s first five points in the third set as the Owls jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and forced Memphis to take a timeout. A kill by Altrese Hawkins and an ace from Maja Kostic out of the timeout cut the Rice lead to 5-3, but the Owls responded with an 8-2 run to make it 13-5 and force the Tigers to call another timeout. The Tigers were unable to find their footing in the set, as the Owls finished the set out 25-14 and the match, 3-0.

The back-and-forth battle continued to open the critical third set with four lead changes between the teams. The Tigers found themselves up 12-11, but would be plagued by errors in the remainder of the set, including five service errors, ultimately falling 25-15. The game concluded in the fourth set with a powerful run by the Cougars, as Katie Norris and Stephanie Nwachukwu each had four kills in the set.
