LAST OUTING (Sept. 30, 2011)
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A strong defensive presence helped the Memphis volleyball team improve to 2-1 in Conference USA play and 13-3 overall with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) win over Marshall on Sunday.
VOLLEYBALL INFO Series record: Marshall, 8-4 Last Meeting: Sept. 25, 2011 Result: Memphis W, 3-0 Head Coach: Mitch Jacobs Assistant Coaches: Kimberly Martinez Overall Record (Years): 361-220 (18) Record at School (Years): 179-119 (9) 2011 Overall Record: 8-19 2011 Conference Record: 7-10
The Tigers held Marshall to .227 hitting thanks in part to five team blocks and 40 digs. Junior Vesna Jelic posted a team-high 10 digs while junior Marija Jovanovic and freshman Aleksandra Petronijevic each tallied nine. Junior Altrese Hawkins paced the Tiger offense with 14 kills. Senior Cameron Yoho led the Thundering Herd with a double-double of 11 digs and 10 kills. Memphis got off to a strong start in set one with the first three points going to the home team. Hawkins had two early kills to help the Tigers jump out to a 7-3 lead. However, Marshall scored five of the next seven points after finding its offensive rhythm and was finally able to tie the score at 11-11. But the Tiger defense came up big with a powerful block from Lauren Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar to prevent the Herd from taking the lead. The two teams stayed tight from there with Memphis maintaining a slight advantage but feeling constant pressure from the Herd. That pressure finally paid off for Marshall as it took the lead 19-18 after three straight kills. But the advantage was short-lived as Altrese Hawkins took over the set and powered home four kills in the final seven points to give Memphis the 25-22 win. Hawkins finished the frame with seven kills on .455 hitting.

Set two began the same way as set one, with an early Memphis lead and a powerful attack led by Hawkins. But Marshall quickly got into sync and scored three straight points to go up 5-4. After falling behind, 9-6, the Tigers began making their move, putting together a 5-1 run featuring two aces to regain the lead at 11-10. The Herd tied the score once and had several other opportunities to even the tally, but Memphis stayed strong and took the set, 25-21.

With the Tigers sensing victory and Marshall trying to stay in the match, set three was tight from the opening serve. The Herd used a 3-0 spurt to go in front 9-6 only to see Memphis respond with a 7-1 run to build a 13-10 lead. The advantage quickly became 18-12 as the Tigers stayed on the attack, eventually scoring the 25-21 victory.

Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a teambest hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29. 800-win Milestone The University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers are currently 29th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list.

Hawkins and Jovanovic Power Memphis Past Tulane in Four Sets
Southern Miss Rallies to Defeat Memphis 3-1
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Altrese Hawkins and Marija Jovanovic combined for 40 kills and led a Memphis attack that hit .338 en route to a 3-1 (26-24;19-25;25-19;2521) victory over Tulane Friday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The first set proved to be a battle as neither team would lead by more than three points. Tulane took its largest lead of the set at 12-9 after a kill by Izabela Grot, but Memphis responded with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 13. The teams would trade points until two-straight attack errors gave Memphis a 21-18 advantage. Tulane fought back to tie the set at 24, but a kill by Molnar coupled with a Green Wave attack error sealed the set for Memphis, 26-24. The U of M tallied 17 kills to Tulane’s 13 in the second set, was plagued by errors throughout, ultimately dropping a 25-19 decision. Memphis jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but a service error by A. Hawkins swung the momentum the Green Wave’s way and the teams were back at 7 all. The teams took turns with the lead before an attack error by A. Hawkins gave Tulane a 17-15 lead. Tulane closed the set on an 8-4 run to win it 25-19. Tulane and Memphis battled back and forth early in the third set and found themselves tied at nine after an attack error by Vesna Jelic. Memphis went on a run to take a 17-13 advantage after a kill by Hawkins. The Green Wave got as close as 18-15 after a kill by Cori Martone, but Memphis finished the set on a 7-4 run to win 25-19. The Tigers appeared poised to run away with the fourth set after a Tulane attack error gave Memphis an 8-4 advantage, but the Green Wave battled back and took the lead 10-9 on a kill by Lilly Wolfe. Memphis found its footing, however, and regained the lead at 13-12 after a kill by A. Hawkins. The Green Wave tied the set at 18-18 and 19-19, but Memphis took the lead for good at 20-19 on a kill by Lauren Hawkins. A kill by A. Hawkins sealed the set for Memphis, 25-21 and the match, 3-1. Tulane was led by Martone (19) and Anna Wruck (13), who each posted doubledigit kills. Wolfe turned in 44 assists in the loss, while Nikki Osuna led the defensive effort with 11 digs. Memphis improves to 2-0 against Tulane this season.

Southern Miss sprinted out to an 8-3 lead in the second set behind four errors by the Tigers. Trailing 15-9, Memphis rallied to cut the deficit to 19-17 and 20-18, but the Golden Eagles finished the set on a 4-1 run to close it out 25-19. The Tigers came out strong out of the locker room in the third set and jumped out to an early 11-6 lead, which forced Southern Miss to call a timeout. Trailing 14-11, the Golden Eagles realed off a 7-1 that gave them an 18-15 lead and forced Memphis to call a timeout. Memphis responded with a point out of the timeout when a kill by Katie Meyer cut the Southern Miss lead to 18-16, but the Golden Eagles were able to finish out the set 25-21.
