UAB

NOTES The Blazers open C-USA play after having a similar preseason to the Tigers. UAB owns an 11-2 record with its only blemishes coming in five-set losses to Illinois State and Stephen F. Austin. The Blazers have won six-straight games, including victories over McNeese State, Drake and Creighton last weekend. Sam Serley and Ally Slaughter lead the Blazers in kills with 115 and 114, respective, while Heather Thomas has anchored the defense with a team-best 246 digs.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Nov. 27, 2010) MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis libero Christine Bach picked up a match-high 23 digs, Altrese Hawkins landed a match-best 19 kills and Marija Jovanovic added a double-double of 12 kills and 12 digs, but in the end UAB won a defensive struggle, 3-1, in the 2010 season finale for both teams on Saturday night at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Memphis wraps up its season 16-16, 7-13 in C-USA play. The Tigers posted a ninegame improvement in the win column from a year ago and claim their ninth finish of .500 or better in 10 seasons. In a contest in which neither side could get much going offensively, it was the UAB defense that made the difference, holding Memphis to a .013 clip for the match and making 18 total blocks. The Tiger gave a solid effort on the defensive side of the net as well with nine blocks, while holding the Blazers to a .061 attack percentage. Jovanovic led Memphis with eight block assists, while freshman Jovana Barisic chipped in with five total blocks. The Tigers won the back row battle as well, finishing with a 69-60 advantage in digs. Memphis landed 12 more kills that UAB for the match. Hawkins landed 13 kills in the final two sets. However, the Tigers could never find a rhythm as they were held under .200 in all four sets. The Tigers served up eight aces, but did not help their cause with 14 serving errors. UAB finished the night with 10 aces. Saturday’s contest marks the end of four Tigers careers. The program says farewell to Bach, Katlin Inglish, Becky Shaffer and Emily Underwood.

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Altrese Hawkins hit .529 with 21 kills and Memphis withstood determined effort by East Carolina to come away with a 3-1 victory Sunday afternoon at ECU’s Minges Coliseum. The Tigers, who hit a robust .336 for the match, improve to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference USA play with their second-straight league victory. ECU falls to 1-15 on the year and 0-4 in C-USA action. With the match tied a 1-1, Memphis fell behind 7-3 early in the third. Looking for its first league win of the year, ECU used a kill and a Memphis attacking error to extend its lead to 15-9. With the Pirates threatening to take a 2-1 lead, the Tigers began chipping away and cut the deficit to two points after Jovanovic connected for a kill. ECU converted on the side-out opportunity to take a 20-17. The Tigers then seized momentum of the contest with a pivotal run. Powered by two kills from Jovanovic, block assists from Jovanovic and Katie Meyer and a kill by Hawkins, the U of M scored five-straight points to take a 22-20 lead. The Pirates came back with score, but Hawkins and Jovanovic struck for two more kills to help Memphis to the 25-22 come-from-behind victory. Memphis hit a stout .382 with 19 kills in the third. Riding the momentum of a morale-boosting set-three win, Memphis cruised to a 25-13 matchclinching decision in the fourth and final frame. The Tigers scored the first six points of the period and used kills by Cassidy Hawkins, Jelic, Molnar and Hawkins to extend the lead to 174. Memphis, who hit .500 on 15 kills and just one error, never looked back. The Tiger defense held ECU to -.042 hitting with just five kills. Memphis opened the contest with a solid team effort, hitting .292 on 12 kills in the opening set. After falling behind 4-1 early-on, the Tigers got three service aces from Marija Jovanovic as part of an 8-0 run to storm ahead 9-4. Assisted blocks by Jovanovic and Meyer, combined with kills from Hawkins and Jovanovic to fuel a five-point push as Memphis took a 16-8 advantage late in the set. A rare kill by defensive specialist Becky Shaffer gave the U of M its largest lead at 21-11. The Pirates, who hit .174 on eight kills in the first set, made a push late in the game, but the Memphis lead was too much in a 25-18 win. ECU again got out quickly in the second set, scoring on four of the first five serves. Memphis closed the gap to one point, but the Pirates responded with a 4-0 run to stretch the Tiger’s deficit to five points at 8-3. The U of M stayed within striking distance until ECU got consecutive kills from Jackie Varnum and Hannah Allgood to go ahead 22-17. An ECU kill, followed by a ball-handling error by Memphis helped ECU to a 25-21 decision, sending both teams into the intermission tied at 1-1.

Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29. 800-win Milestone The University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. at Howard Saturday, Sept. 17 Memphis, 3-0 Memphis Defeats Howard to Win Spartan Spiketacular GREENSBORO, N.C. - Altrese Hawkins downed 10 kills, including the 1000th of her career, and was named the tournament’s MVP as Memphis defeated Howard 3-0 (25-19;25-16;27-25) to capture its third tournament crown of the preseason at the Spartan Spiketacular. Memphis started the first set slow, allowing Howard to hang around and tie the match at seven. Two kills from Lauren Hawkins and an ace from Vesna Jelic gave Memphis a 10-7 lead. Howard would get as close as 11-10, but the Tigers regained control and went up 18-13. Memphis went up 23-18 before a solo block and a kill from Marija Jovanovic put the set away, 25-19. Jovanovic and L. Hawkins led the Tigers with three kills each in the first set, and Jelic added two kills and four digs. A. Hawkins also recorded the 1,000th kill of her career during the set. The Tigers took the second set behind a very balanced attack, as four players (A. Hawkins, L. Hawkins, Jelic and Jovanovic) each registered three kills. The Bison kept the set close, tying it at eight after a service error by Jovanovic, but the Tigers went on a 4-0 run powered by kills from Maja Kostic and A. Hawkins to take a 12-8 advantage. The 4-0 run turned into an 8-1 run to give the Tigers a 16-9 advantage, but Howard fought back to narrow the deficit to 20-16. The Tigers then scored fivestraight points, including two kills from L. Hawkins, to put the set away, 25-16. The third set proved to be a tough one for the Tigers, as Howard kept scrapping its way back into the set. Memphis used a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to take a 12-8 lead powered by kills from A. Hawkins and L. Hawkins. The Tigers were ahead 19-15 and appeared to be in control of the set before Howard went on a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the set at 21-20. The Bison scored another point to increase their lead to 22-20, but an attack error and a serve error allowed Memphis to regain the lead 24-23. Howard rallied to score two straight points and get a set point at 25-24, but the Tigers staved off elimination and scored three-straight points to clinch the set, 27-25, the match, 3-0 and the tournament championship.
